AD 830—north-east Sweden

Sayrid Avildottar stood in the ice-cold pond, fish spear raised, her eyes on a particularly large sea trout.

She and trout were old adversaries. Fishing helped to hone her eye and her hand when she was at home as well as providing food for the table. And out here in the pond, no one ever complained that she was far too tall, too clumsy or too unwomanly. Not that anyone did much these days. She'd proved her worth with five seasons of profitable sea voyages.

It was amazing how quickly people fell silent when you had gold in your purse, a reputation as a canny trader and a sword by your side that you knew how to use.

The jaarl would surely relent and allow her to lead a felag further east where fortunes truly could be made, instead of always trading with Birka and having to pay tribute to the various sea kings who prowled the sea lanes. And after that, she would never need to go on a voyage again. She would be able to stay at home and make sure her lands were safe. It would give her half-brother, Regin, time to become the capable warrior that she knew he could be and give her half-sister time to choose the warrior she married, instead of being forced into an unwise alliance with a man who had little respect for her.

She simply had to work out a way to make the jaarl see it was in his best interest.

The trout spun round and started back towards her, making its final bid for freedom. Sayrid balanced on her toes, waiting for that precise heartbeat when her spear would be most effective.

'Sayrid! Sayrid!' Her half-brother's voice resounded about the pond at the very instant she was about to thrust the spear.

The spear fell harmlessly into the pond and the fish flashed away.

'This had better be good, Regin,' Sayrid called back, retrieving the spear and vowing that next time the old trout would not get away so lightly. 'You've cost me a fish supper.'

'Blodvin has sent an urgent message about the marriage.'

'What can be important about that?' Sayrid peered into the water, trying to spot the trout again. 'The bride price was sworn last jul-tide. It was more than it should have been, but dewy eyes, honeyed curls and a sizeable portion of land come at a price.'

Svear custom dictated that before any marriage could take place, the groom paid a bride price to his intended's family to show that he was capable of supporting her and any children in the appropriate manner. In return her family paid a dowry which he could use during his lifetime, but which reverted to the woman and her children at his death or after a divorce. The amount exchanged usually cancelled each other out.

'Sayrid. Is that all you can think about—how much gold my marriage will cost this family? It is my future happiness at stake here.'

Sayrid rested her elbow on top of the spear. Gods save her from her family. Ever since her younger brother, Regin, had fallen for Blodvin, he'd changed and become more apt than normal to stare off into space.

'I'll forgive you supper, but stop panicking. Come the next Storting you'll be married. Even Ingvar Floki-son the Bloodaxe would not dare cross our family, not after the bride price has been agreed. That's all I'm saying…' She detected a slight movement in the water. 'Now if you don't mind, I have a bone to pick with this trout.'

'Sayrid, look at me instead of dismissing me. Please.'

Sayrid turned around and winced at Regin's tragic expression. Thankfully their father was no longer there to mock.

'Regin, what is wrong?' she asked in a far gentler tone. There was little point in rehearsing her old arguments against a match with Blodvin. Regin had made up his mind and his stubborn streak rivalled her own. It was why they had been able to face their father down years ago when he had tried to use his fists on their sister, Auda, when she could barely walk. 'What new demand has Bloodaxe made? Whatever it is, I'll deliver it. You know me and my ways. I always hate being disturbed when I'm fishing.'

'She is marrying someone else.'

Sayrid froze. 'Who? Who thinks they can cross this family without retribution?'

'Hrolf Eymundsson. Her father doesn't dare refuse him as he is a sea king with half a dozen ships under his command.' Regin clutched his hair with both his hands. 'I can't lose her, Sayrid.'

'What?' Sayrid stood up straighter. 'Whose idea of a joke is this? Hrolf Eymundsson isn't here. The jaarl would have informed me. He would have requested my help in defending our village.'

'Hrolf and our jaarl exchanged peace rings at Birka. They are allied against Lavrans and his Viken raiders.'

'I heard about that.' Sayrid scowled. If she had been there, she'd have counselled against it. Once a marauding sea king, always one. But she had been in Ribe with the Danes, seeing whether that market was any better than Birka, and the jaarl had followed his instincts. She had to hope that Hrolf the Sea-Rider would honour his pledges and deal with the threat from Lavrans. However, she suspected given time he'd prove the same as every other sea king she'd encountered—an oaf with an overinflated opinion of his self-worth and an insatiable desire for gold, leading to demands for more tribute. The jaarl had been less than pleased when she had voiced her opinion on the subject.

'Hrolf arrived for a visit to cement the alliance two weeks ago.' Her brother gave her a sharp look. 'I thought you saw the jaarl when you returned.'

'We spoke of other things.' Sayrid concentrated on keeping her face blank. There was no need for Regin to know how badly the interview had gone and how she'd stormed out. 'What does this alliance have to do with Blodvin?'

'Eymundsson spotted Blodvin as soon as he stepped foot on our shores and made an offer that day. Her father wants the better match.'

'Better match indeed! The dirty scoundrel! We have already paid part of the bride price!' Sayrid gave vent to her anger and frustration at being kept in the dark about the sea king's visit and threw the spear with all her might. It stuck deep in the mud, quivering. 'No one cheats Ironfist's children.'

'Because of you, not me.' Her brother plucked the spear out of the mud and held it out to her. 'I'm the one she is supposed to marry. I'm not even head of the household. You hold that title by being a shield maiden.'

'An agreement is an agreement.' Sayrid crossed her arms and silently willed her brother not to cry any more. 'Blodvin chose you above all her other suitors.'

'Hrolf Eymundsson is another proposition altogether. You know his reputation as well as I. He came from nothing in a few years to commanding ships and a horde of Byzantium gold.'

'Fortune's wheel can turn sour just as quickly,' she said. 'Maybe his time has passed and yours is about to begin.'

Regin hung his head. 'You know what I'm like in personal combat.'

'That is all in your mind. Because of what happened when you were ten.' Sayrid climbed out of the pond. 'There is very little to wonder why your opponent won. He was a full-blooded warrior and you a mere boy. Far should never have forced you.'

Her father had a lot to answer for. He had been too quick with his fists and tongue, taking particular pleasure in tormenting her younger brother. He had only stopped when she had stood up to him, waving a sword in his face and threatening to use it. He'd retaliated by beating her until her back was bloody, but he had left Regin alone.

It wasn't his fists she had feared, but his cruel tongue. The worst was when he had proclaimed that any man could have her and all his property as her dowry without paying the customary bride price if they could defeat her in combat.

What a start to her career as a shield maiden it had been! Fighting off a fat drunken imbecile while everyone laughed. The jeers had turned to respectful silence when she met the next contestant, a respected but elderly warrior and disarmed him as well, followed by a young warrior. After that, the challenges had dried up.

'But Far said—'

'Far said a lot of stupid things,' Sayrid couldn't help but reply. 'Now he is dead from drinking far too much ale. He can't hurt you again. Ever.'

'But…but…' Her brother swallowed nervously.

'Our family prospers. Didn't Jaarl Kettil say how pleased he is with the amount of gold we brought back from our latest trading voyage?' Sayrid attempted a bright smile. 'You contributed to it.'

Regin shrugged. 'I'm still not a great warrior like Far wanted. Kettil will eventually demand a seasoned warrior, one who can lead felags and hold this land, not just a shield maiden.'

'You've other talents,' Sayrid said before Regin listed his perceived failings as a warrior or Kettil's stubborn refusal to allow her to lead a felag to the East. 'You acquitted yourself well in Tensberg. You saved the lodestone from being washed overboard on that wave.'

He gave a sad smile. 'That was pure luck and we'd never have been near those rocks if I'd paid attention.'

'You're skilled at languages.'

Regin's nostrils flared slightly, reminding Sayrid of a high-strung horse who was about to refuse to get on board ship. 'Hrolf will challenge with the sword, not with verses of poetry.'

Sayrid stared at her brother. Where had his backbone gone? If he loved Blodvin as he claimed, he should be willing to fight for her. 'Panicking never solves anything. You're seventeen now, not an untried lad attending his first assembly. Every man has a weakness. Study him, find it and exploit it if you want the woman.'

'Blodvin thinks she might be pregnant.'

Sayrid froze. 'Yours?'

Regin went pink about his ears and he gave a slow nod. 'Three months ago at the summer festival. It was the only time, I swear it, but she was so sweet in my arms.'

'Blodvin's father is a snake and not to be trusted, which is why you should have exercised restraint,' she said between gritted teeth before Regin could give her the intimate details. 'Wait, I said. Wait until you were safely married because of the possibilities of complications. Did I have to spell out what those complications were?'

'Blodvin expects me to face down Hrolf and claim her and the babe.' A nervous tic began in Regin's right eye as it always did when he contemplated fighting.

'Or I'm not the warrior she thought I was. She wants me to do it when they marry.'

'Marching into a wedding and snatching the bride will cause a major feud, assuming you even get out alive. I forbid it.' Sayrid concentrated on breathing. That woman would get her brother killed or, worse, start a feud which lasted generations. 'Why wait until I was fishing to tell me?'

Regin hung his head. His blond curls fell forward, hiding his face. Unlike Sayrid, who took after their tall, strong father, Regin took after his mother and was far shorter. Their father used to say he'd been doubly cursed—his eldest daughter was taller than most men and his only son prettier than most women.

'The message arrived this morning.' The sunlight streamed on Regin, giving him a halo of golden curls. 'Blodvin makes me feel like I have the strength of ten men.'

'Blodvin can send the child here when it is time. I would never turn one of your children away.' She held out her hands and willed her brother to take them. She knew her words were harsh, but the last thing she wanted was for her brother to be declared outlaw or worse over a flighty woman. 'In time, you will see that this was the best course. The Norns will have a different woman in mind for you.'

Regin turned his head away. 'There won't be other women for me. I love Blodvin with all my heart.'

'So speak all lovers until they meet the next woman.' She waited for Regin's sheepish smile.

His eyes burnt with a bright flame. 'It's only because you've never been in love that you make jokes.'

'Me in love? Gods forbid. I have a household to run and hungry mouths to feed.' Love was something that happened to women who didn't tower over all the men and who knew how to dance prettily and pour the drink with the right amount of simpering deference. Her father's scorn for once had held a ring of truth.

'Some day, Sayrid, you will know what it is like to have your heart ripped out.'

'I'm a shield maiden. First and foremost. I won't marry unless the man can defeat me in combat. The jaarl agreed to my pledge.' Sayrid made a practice throw of her fishing spear. She'd turned her father's cruel jest around and had made it a virtue. 'Don't distract me with discussions about my future. What do you intend to do, if you won't challenge Hrolf for the fair Blodvin's hand? Sail east?'

The pleading expression on Regin's face became truly heartbreaking. 'This is also an insult to the family. Bloodaxe will say he broke the agreement because.'

'Because I am unnatural and lead this house with my sword arm. Should I be sticking to my spinning and weaving, and wringing my hands when we lose everything to some arrogant sea king who sails into the harbour demanding tribute?' Sayrid finished before Regin had a chance to say the words. 'Because I am talented at the arts of war instead of those of love?'

'Going Viking isn't what women do.' Regin coughed. 'You have to admit my mother had a point.'

White-hot anger flashed through Sayrid. She had rejoiced the day her stepmother had remarried and moved more than a week's march to the south, taking her poisonous tongue with her. 'Funny how that excuse springs so readily to people's lips. They like to forget the trade and wealth our ships bring.'

Regin drew a line with his foot. 'Her father disapproves of you, but I don't. That is not what I was going to say. He will claim it is because I delayed the marriage and he worried about the agreed price being paid. If we had done as he wanted, I would have married at jul.'

'His wool sacks were light and I won't pay good gold for less than the full measure. A man who will cheat on such things, will cheat on his daughter's dowry.' Sayrid put her hands on Regin's shoulders and looked down at his watering eyes. 'We delayed the marriage because Bloodaxe had difficulties with the dowry and Blodvin wanted to have her dress properly embroidered. Not because of anything we did wrong. The jaarl knows the truth.' She paused. 'It is something to unsettle you so that we will accept a lower dowry.'

Regin slammed his fists together. 'I will marry Blodvin with or without your help…or die trying.'

Sayrid pretended to fiddle with the fishing spear. 'After I've forbidden it?'

Her brother's face took on his stubborn look. 'I'll go anyway.'

'I won't rescue you.'

His face fell. 'Maybe this time I won't need rescuing.'

A brief laugh escaped her throat. 'Regin! Think!'

'I love her, Say. I can't stand aside and let her be married to someone like Hrolf Eymundsson.'

Sayrid mentally said goodbye to a quiet few weeks fishing and planning how to be put in charge of a felag. 'If it means that much to you, then we will see if Blodvin needs rescuing. But if the lady wishes to be married to Hrolf Eymundsson, we leave her there and walk away. Agreed?'

Instantly, her brother's face became wreathed in smiles. 'I knew you'd do it. I told Auda you'd help.'

'And, Regin, this is the last time.'

About the Author
Liz Flaherty spends non-writing time sewing, quilting, and thinking she should clear a path through the fabric stash that furnishes her office. She also loves to travel and spend time with the grandkids (the Magnificent Seven) and their parents. She and Duane, her husband of a really long time, live in the old farmhouse in Indiana they moved to in 1977. They've talked about moving, but really, 30-some years of stuff? It's not happening! She'd love to hear from you at lizkflaherty@gmail.com.

Another great Heartwarming story!
By lilacqueen75
"Children are not to be blamed for the faults of their parents." -- Aesop. Jack and his half brother, Tucker, had a loser father, one who made a terrible mistake, causing an accident that affected not only their lives, but the lives of close friends and the entire small lakeside community. Thirteen years later, Jack still can't get over it and after years of running from his heritage, he's back. It was hard for me to understand how a smart, "jack-of-all-trades" kind of guy, couldn't move on and realize that he is not his dad and that no one blames him.

Arlie has a dead-beat mom and is much closer to her stepmom. Afraid that her genes will cause her to be like her biological mother, she's in no rush to have a family. When Jack left, she was crushed and can't believe that some things are so different after so many years, while other things remain unchanged, such as her feelings for him.

These characters both have secrets, deeply rooted issues involving their parents, and fears that make it very difficult to move forward in life. I enjoyed the process of growth and watching the transformations. Dreams are meant to be reached for and not just thought about. Of course, my favorite moments were the interactions between the two and I loved watching them rediscover one another. I love good, strong, family relationships and this story has those in abundance. Conflicts and love set the pace for this fine contemporary romance. I always know I'm going to get a great story with a Harlequin Heartwarming and this one is no exception.

Content: mild romance (kissing, talk of teen pregnancy, mention of past indiscretions); mild language (taking the Lord's name in vain a few times); mild violence (mention of drunk driving, deaths). Clean.

*I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review*

Best book yet!
By Terri Hall
I stayed up late, then got up early to finish this book.
Arlie and Jack both had an awful parent each, but their love for each other and Arlie's stepmother made a big difference in their lives - until tragedy struck. Lives were changed drastically. The unnecessary guilt that Jack carried drove him away, separating him from friends and family, and especially the girl he loved.
Another death brings him back, heartaches begin to heal.
Both Arlie and Jack have their secrets, sorrows, and fears that hold them apart, but finally, love conquers all.
Liz's ability to create deep characters and secondary characters is amazing. You can't help but feel like they exist in real life.
Authors take the time to make their main characters seem life like and even the evil ones, (like Arlie's mom). Liz even had me rooting for Chris and he's not even a secondary character.
All in all, a great book. Well done my friend, well done.
Terri

Another page-turner from Liz Flaherty
By Kristina Knight
Liz Flaherty is on my auto-buy list, and this book is another reason why. After a tragedy befalls Jack and Arlie on prom night, Jack leaves town, but Arlie stays behind. The book picks up twenty-some years later; they've both lived, but in their own ways neither of them have moved on past that night. Jack is deliciously yummy as the hero of the book; he's confident in who he is, but he is also still vulnerable to Arlie. Arlie has had to be strong for so many years she isn't sure how to be anything else...and yet she's also vulnerable (in all the right ways) to Jack.

As always, Liz has developed the characters in the book wonderfully so that you're rooting for them on every page, and even the town becomes something of a character. I can see the main street and the lake, the houses are crystal clear in my mind, and the people are the kind you know you would meet on a sunny, summer afternoon in Indiana. I loved this book, and I can't wait for the next one.

The first three books of the Long Tall Texans series.
By spitspat
Although I enjoy reading DP's books, I get tired of the repetition. Sometimes I think if you have read one of her books then you have read them all. The heroines are usually naive virgins who don't know how to dress and put up with too much from the heros. The heros usually behave badly until they quit fighting their feelings for the heroine. And all the jewelry stores only sell emerald solitairs. Reguardless of all this the stories are usually good. Some are better than others. But I do wish the women had careers, backbones, and didn't need a makeover. Justin was my favorite in this book because Shelby didn't need a makeover or seem so naive.

First And Best
By C. Bates
This was the first book by Diana Palmer that I read. And it was where I fell in love with the Long Tall Texan's. I loved the tension between the characters. And would have to say that Calhoun's story would have to be my favorite with Justin coming behind closely in second. This book was great a definite keeper!

one of three
By amy
I love diana palmer's stories because of the formula they follow of a strong male hero and a naive lead woman. The fact that these stories takes place in texas and I live here was an added bonus as well.
That aside.... after i read "long tall texas 2" I couldn't wait to snap up the third edition in this series. the Termayne brothers really drew me in. I thought that Harden's story would be the one to make the book worth wild but strangely Evan's story was what truly drew me in.
This book is really three books combined into one. The first is about Harden Tremayne. He has a hard, jaded outlook on life and women. A trip to Chicago leads to a chance meeting with a woman who ultimately changes his life. This story though while good lacked depth. It seemed to wrap up to nice and neat and definitely to quickly.
Evan Tremayne is the second story told. He had fears of intimacy with innocents, i.e. our virgin heroine, because of his great size and strength. This is the longest story and in my opinion the best. Well rounded and seeming to end the story well without dragging on or cutting it abruptly off. This story is steamy and has a bit of humor in it. The characters seem the most well matched and the story the most believable.
The third story is about Donovan. A man who hates rich women after his father was involved in a scandal with a rich socialite. His meeting with a rich debutant sparks a romance that seems at time ill placed. Their chemistry is there but the love scenes between them seem almost akward and both begin and end annoyingly abruptly.
I would reccommend this book for Evan's story alone and it's a definite fun read. Both Harden and Donovan's stories are entertaining so give it a go.

exciting fast-paced investigative tale
By A Customer
Chicago collectible picker Jane Wheel is very concerned with her brother Michael whom she fears is working with dishonest eBay dealer Honest Joe. Her evidence is counterfeit baseball cards she found in her sibling's house when she visited him in California.

She also knows that customers taken to the cleaners by dishonest Honest Joe have been ready to beat the snot out of Michael. Worse Michael looks like Honest Joe's twin that is on his internet store site. Jane asks her detective partner, Bruce Oh to investigate. His inquiry leads her to Jim Speller of Herscher, Illinois; however Jim apparently is living with Jane's second cousin Ada, who is hosting a "Scary Night" haunted house festival with "real" thieving ghosts.

The latest Jane Wheel mystery (see HOLLYWOOD STUFF) is an exciting fast-paced investigative tale with several fabulous twists as readers anticipate the next spin. Jane is at her best as she tries to identify who Honest Joe the internet thief is and what the connection to her brother is; she rules out separated at birth theory. Fans will relish her efforts to protect Michael from irate surfers by uncovering the truth. SCARY STUFF is an enthralling amateur sleuth mystery.

Great Book

I have read the other books in this series and was waiting for this one to come out. It was worth the wait. Now I have to wait for the next one - and I sure hope there is one! Keeps you guessing!

If you like collectibles and characters, you need to meet Jane Wheel
By Cathy G. Cole
Antique picker Jane Wheel loves old stuff that was never meant to be in a collection-- old aprons and tea towels, orphaned Bakelite buttons, other families' photos... the list is endless--and she's good at it, reselling her estate sale finds to other collectors and adding to the treasure-filled rooms of her own home. These days, she's really a P.P.I., a Picker Private Investigator, because she is also an associate to a private detective. Bakelite buttons and secrets: Jane Wheel is good at finding them both.

Making a rare visit to her brother and his family, Jane was intrigued when Michael told her about the three times he was accused by strangers of cheating them on eBay only to realize they'd gotten the wrong man once they'd taken a good look at his face. Jane agrees to look into it for her brother and returns home to Illinois.

When she's back in Illinois, one of her parents' friends is attacked, and suddenly Jane has two cases, both of which seem a little too close to her loved ones.

Jane grew up in Kankakee, Illinois, and then moved to Chicago where she became a high-rolling advertising executive, got married and had a child. When she decided to put her power suits into storage and start picking, she found herself having much more contact with her childhood best friend and her parents. But even though she spends most of her time in a much more rural setting, she's a bit too much of a city girl:

"Country driving always made her nervous. All of these look-alike county roads, numbered or lettered, and no one around to answer any questions about directions. No landmarks, unless you consider the livestock, and one couldn't very well turn at the two cows or go straight past the trotting horse. Jane much preferred the anonymity of a city street to the isolation of the country road."

I've been a fan of Sharon Fiffer and this series since I read the first book, Killer Stuff. Having to wait three years for Scary Stuff was entirely too long, so when I finally managed to track down a copy, there was no way I could let it sit on a shelf.

It doesn't disappoint. There are enough treasures and picking in this book to make me start salivating and wanting to start collecting again. The two cases involving mistaken identity and the attack on a family friend are meaty and kept me guessing. More than anything else, I loved spending time with the characters again. Jane is such a blend of strength and insecurity, and Fiffer isn't afraid to shake up her private life.

Fiffer is also one of the very few writers who can have an extremely annoying character in every single book in the series and not make me want to rip out my hair. Jane's mother, Nellie, is about as exasperating as they come, but the more backstory Fiffer gives her, the more understandable she is. Now, by book six, Nellie has become a force of nature, and sometimes I can even chuckle and shake my head at her behavior, as in this scene:

"When Jane had asked the typical childhood questions of her mother-- How did you meet Dad? What was it like when you went to school? Et cetera-- Nellie had refused to participate. Her answers ranged from "I don't remember" to "What's the difference? Who cares?" Michael always said their mother missed her calling. She should have been with the CIA."

Involving plots, an interesting career, characters with depth whose paths are sometimes surprising and rocky, a sense of humor... all reasons for you to pick up a Jane Wheel mystery when you're in the mood for picking with bite.

She couldn't breathe. Vanessa had feared this moment for years, envisioned it repeatedly over the past few months, watched it play out time after time in her nightmares. And yet, for all its familiarity, nothing could match the terror she felt now that it was actually happening.

It was worse than she'd imagined it.

The black Land Rover pulled into the middle of the driveway.

The middle! Why block the entire double-lane driveway? Why today?

Because they didn't want anyone to get out alive, that was why.

"Mommy, Mommy!" Emma tugged at Vanessa's shirt. "My apple juice!"

Vanessa sucked in enough air to speak. "Yes, Emma. I have your apple juice right here. You can drink it in the car. We're going to do the quiet drill again. Remember the quiet drill?"

To Vanessa's relief, her four-year-old's eyes lit up. "The quiet drill. Yes! But Sammy is napping."

"I know, sweetheart." Vanessa handed her daughter the sippy cup ofjuice. "It will be okay. Can you get your jacket on? And tell Abby. Remember to whisper. Everything will be okay." Vanessa spoke the last words as much for her own reassurance as for Emma's. She gave her daughter an encouraging smile, then glanced back out the basement-level window in time to see an all-too-familiar pair of black shoes looking not too out of place in the quiet suburban cul-de-sac.

And boots. Two pairs. No, three.

Virgil had extra guns with him today.

Of course he did. He'd told Jeff on his last visit there wouldn't be another warning. His money or his life…and the lives of Vanessa and the children.

As always, Jeff had made the deal without consulting her. Vanessa had no intention of letting him bargain with their lives. She'd been preparing ever since, hiding emergency supplies in the garage, ready to go. Drilling the children on a swift and silent evacuation. She was ready—as prepared as anyone ever could be.

But why did Virgil have to park in the middle of the driveway?

The doorbell echoed through the house, and Vanessa flew into action. She might not have much time. Sure, Virgil liked to talk. She hoped he'd try to threaten Jeff a little longer in hopes of squeezing the money out of him, but there was every chance the mobster—gangster, whatever he was, Vanessa had never really wanted to know—might drag the kids out first in an effort to make his argument more compelling.

Sammy was still asleep, just as Emma said. Vanessa scooped up the ten-month-old and set him as gently as possible into his waiting car seat.

This was the part of her escape plan that troubled her most, one of the biggest reasons she'd never been brave enough—or desperate enough—to attempt to escape with the kids before. Abby and Emma could be depended upon to flee in silence. But if Sam cried, he would give away their position, and she couldn't stop him.

His rosebud lips opened in protest as Vanessa tucked one arm through the five-point harness. Prepared, Vanessa slipped a pacifier into his open mouth and prayed.

Please, Lord. If ever I needed Your help, it's today.

Sammy made a grumpy face, but his eyes stayed closed and he started sucking.

Gently, Vanessa pulled his other arm through its strap, buckled him in and hoisted up the car seat, all but running to the stairs that led to the garage.

As she rose toward the second floor, she could hear Virgil arguing with Jeff in the living room upstairs, their voices muffled but angry. They were in the house.

She had to hurry, and reached for the forbidden keys. Jeff almost never allowed her to drive, not unless he was with her, his gun at his side to make sure she didn't try to get away from him. That the keys were on a peg by the garage at all was a recent concession, made only after Virgil's latest threat.

That Jeff had agreed meant he, too, understood Virgil wasn't messing around. Jeff had kept her tied up for the first year after he'd kidnapped her, only allowing her a tiny bit of freedom in the locked basement after Abby was born. Even now, he'd strictly told her she wasn't to try to leave the basement without him.

But still the keys were there. The door that led to the garage was unlocked. On some level, whether consciously or not, Jeff had allowed her a means of running for her life—even if it meant escaping from him, something he'd long told her she could never do.

Vanessa grabbed the fat ring of keys as she slipped through the door to the garage.

Abby and Emma looked at her from inside the Sequoia with anxious eyes as Vanessa carried Sammy into the garage. "Did you get the bags?" she asked her seven-year-old as she settled the infant car seat into place.

"Yes," Abby whispered, true to the plan.

A quick glance in the third-row seat confirmed everything was in place.

Everything but the enormous vehicle blocking the driveway.

Vanessa climbed into the driver's seat. "Everybody buckled?" she asked, latching her own seat belt. "Yes, Mommy."

Now what? The next step of the drill was to back out of the driveway as quickly as possible, to get away before Virgil or his men could get off a shot. But with the house on one side of the driveway and the steep, terraced side of the landscaped hill on the immediate other side, there was no way out of the garage except the driveway, and Virgil had blocked it. The Land Rover was worse than a solid wall behind them.

A solid wall.

Vanessa looked at the wall in front of her. Plywood sheathing, two-by-fours spaced widely apart. And on the other side, vinyl siding.

How hard could it be?

She didn't have time to find out. She didn't have options. There was certain death in every other direction. Jeff had forced her to witness enough of Virgil's "disciplinary measures" to know his warnings weren't empty threats.

Maybe she should have tried to get away before, even years before, but Jeff had always made certain that wasn't possible. Even once Abby was born and Vanessa wasn't bound with ropes or chains, it became too difficult to escape with a baby in tow. Jeff kept them locked in the basement whenever he wasn't home to guard over her. For the past seven years, her priority had been giving her children a normal childhood—or as close to normal as she could provide under Jeff's armed supervision.

Jeff's threats echoed through her thoughts even now. Jeff knew too much about her family. He'd threatened to torture and kill her grandfather and sister, to take her children from her, malign her as a bad mother, claiming she'd lied to him about her real age and identity No, Vanessa hadn't dared try to escape, not as long as Jeff was alive to come after her or give information for Virgil to track down everyone she held dear.

But this time, Virgil's threat was bigger than Jeff's. Virgil had promised the last time that if he had to come back, he wouldn't let any of them live, not even Jeff—which meant Jeff couldn't come after her or tell Virgil anything that might help him find her.

In some ways the criminal was freeing her.

If only his vehicle wasn't barring the way. It was far, far too late to call the police, even if Vanessa had any hope they'd let her keep her children. No, Jeff had made clear what she'd lose if she tried to get the law on her side. Her word against his, and that of his associates.

There was only one way out of the garage Dear Lord, please let this work.

"Okay, girls, tuck your heads like I told you." Vanessa had originally planned for the girls to lay their heads on their laps, covered by their arms, to protect them from possible gunfire as she backed down the driveway past the living-room picture window. But a tucked-head position might be just as protective going the other direction.

She had a good ten feet of empty storage space in front of her, maybe more. Normally she would never start a vehicle inside a closed garage, but they wouldn't be in there for more than a few seconds.

She turned the key, threw the SUV into gear and stomped on the gas, throwing one arm up over her face and pinching her eyes shut, holding tight to the steering wheel with her other hand. The vehicle leaped forward, slamming into the wall, pushing through it with the sound of splintering wood and cracking boards.

"Mommy! You drove through the wall!"

"I know, Emma. It's okay." Vanessa steered around the girls' playhouse. The Sequoia lurched across the sandbox, flattening the tall privacy fence that had long held them prisoner, clipping the neighbor's back bushes en route to the street.

The big tires lumbered down the curb. Vanessa cruised down the familiar boulevard, four blocks, five, and came to a stop at the traffic light. She checked for oncoming traffic. Finding the way clear, she turned right onto the busy street, checked her rearview mirror for any sign of the Land Rover and breathed the tiniest sigh of relief.

No sign of them. Yet.

But Virgil and his men could come after them any moment.

The front of the vehicle was probably scratched and dented, but the windshield hadn't even cracked. The girls were wide-eyed but silent. Sammy was whimpering. Still, most important, they were alive.

Alert!

Abducted children in danger!

Eric stopped flipping through the channels on the cabin's relic of a television as the screen flashed pictures of two little girls and a baby. A boy. Samuel.

The reporter rattled off the details in a matter-of-fact voice. "The Nelson children are believed to be with their mother. Their father's body was found this evening. Authorities at this time are assuming he was shot by his wife, who took the children following a domestic dispute."

"So what's the forecast?" Debbi, Eric's younger sister, bounded into the room behind him, then stopped short.

"Oh, no."

"They are believed to be traveling in a brown Toyota Sequoia, which may have frontend damage. Authorities believe the woman drove through the back wall of the garage as she left."

The scene on the screen switched from the children's faces to a picture of an SUV superimposed over footage of splintered two-by-fours and the busted-out back wall of a garage.

The reporter turned to a man standing in front of a black Land Rover. "This is Chicago businessman Virgil Greenwood, who discovered the body of Jeffrey Nelson at Mr. Nelson's Barrington home this evening. Mr. Greenwood, can you tell us what happened?"

Virgil Greenwood, a middle-aged man in a business suit, nodded soberly. "Mr. Nelson and I were supposed to have a business dinner together today. I had made arrangements to pick him up, but when I arrived, no one answered the door. I could see the living room through the window and thought I saw Mr. Nelson there, but when I looked closer, I could see he'd been shot. The front door was unlocked. I let myself in. Of course, my first thought was for his family. I knew he had a wife and kids. So I called out, 'Hello, is anyone home?' something like that—and then I heard the crash."

"That's when Mrs. Nelson drove through the garage?" the reporter confirmed.

"Yes, yes, the sound came from that direction. I ran to see, but the vehicle was already gone. But you can see the ruts."

"Let's get another look at those ruts," the reporter requested, and the screen image shifted again.

"Eric?" Debbi touched his arm. "You don't have to watch this."

"I know." Eric's fingers twitched over the buttons on the remote, but he couldn't bring himself to switch the channel. "They said the kids might be in danger. I have to hear what they think happened."

"It's okay. The forecast can wait. I can look outside. It was warm today, but the evening will be cooler. Typical October in Illinois." Debbi spoke softly, almost as though she was afraid to disturb him.

She'd been that way eight years ago, too, when Vanessa first disappeared, and every time an unexpected memory or a missing-child report would trigger flashbacks. Being here at the cabin where he and Vanessa had spent so much time together both as kids and teens, the memories were closer to the surface, more real and harder to suppress.

Virgil's voice continued as the camera panned in for a close-up of the tire tracks that cut jagged lines through an otherwise picturesque backyard. "What kind of crazy person would drive through the garage wall? And with the kids in the car? At least, I hope she had her kids with her. Who knows what she might have done with them if she did this to Jeff?"

The reporter, instead of shushing the man's musings, encouraged them. "You mentioned you might know what could have prompted her to act, isn't that right, Mr. Greenwood?"

"Oh, Jeff said he thought his wife was having an affair. I suppose she decided to leave him. Maybe they fought about it, I don't know. It's just crazy, isn't it? They need to find those kids before she does anything to them. It's getting dark out."

"And here is a picture of the mother, Madison Nelson, who is believed to have abducted her own children after shooting their father dead." A woman's face appeared on the screen—blond curly hair, tired eyes, a wan smile.

"What kind of crazy woman does a thing like that?" Debbi muttered behind him.

But Eric was too distracted by the image to attempt to answer her question. "She almost looks like Vanessa."

"Vanessa had brown hair, not blond," Debbi corrected quickly. "And she's too young to have a seven-year-old."

"She was seventeen when she disappeared eight years ago."

"She was declared legally dead."

"Doesn't mean she is dead."

"Vanessa wouldn't shoot her husband and leave him for another guy."

"That is true. What kind of woman would do a thing like that?" Eric gripped the remote, finally winning the battle to change channels as the reporter intoned about the importance of viewers reporting any sign of the vehicle, the children or their mother—and speculations about the man she may have run away to join. "And what kind of guy would get involved with such a crazy person?"

Sammy was asleep when Vanessa placed his car seat in the concrete manger of the life-size nativity scene in front of her sister's house. She felt a pang of doubt. Was she right to leave the baby with her sister? It was going to be difficult enough to run with the girls. Sammy needed frequent feedings and diaper changes. The girls, at least, could stay quiet when they needed to.

He'd be safer with Alyssa. Wouldn't he? Vanessa looked at the concrete sculptures of Mary and Joseph, poised protectively over the manger. Mary's expression of love and concern seemed to say she'd look over the child.

Vanessa knew she didn't dare linger, no matter how much she wished she could see her sister. If Alyssa saw her, she'd have to take the time to explain, and that would endanger them all. Virgil's men might catch up to her at any time, and Sammy would only be safe if the men who were after her didn't know where she'd left him.

Awesome!
By Glenda Parker
These two books are dealing with an important issue that we are now dealing with in the United States, human trafficking. A horrible problem that should make parents turn to God to protect our children from these monsters. Don't let your children leave without praying for their protection. Rachelle does a great job on this subject, you need to read this story.

The first story, One Silent Night is about Vanessa Jackson and her mysterious disappearance eight years ago. Vanessa was kidnapped and held hostage by a human trafficking ring. Now after eight years and three children her husband is killed and Vanessa is running for her life. She heads to the only safe place she knows a cabin in the woods owned by her grandfather. Upon her arrival she learns that the cabin has been sold and Eric, her childhood friend owns it.

Eric Tomlin is shocked to see the face of the girl he loved on the news. They said she had killed her husband and abducted her children. He doesn't know what to believe when she walks in his front door. He agrees to help her find who is out to kill her.
They have to turn to God to find a way out of this mess.

Danger in the Manger, don't you love that name? This story is about Vanessa's twin sister, Alyssa Jackson. Alyssa never understood why her sister would just disappear but she never gave up hope she was still alive although she was forced to declare her sister dead to deal with her grandfathers estate. Alyssa hears a car pull up but has learned that she sells more statues when she lets people look around her yard, but when she leaves her workshop no one is there. She is shocked to find a baby lying in the manger of her nativity. The T-shirt on the baby says if they do a DNA test on the baby they would find Alyssa to be the mother. The police officer that was with her when she read the shirt didn't believe the baby could be hers. She didn't know the first thing about babies.

Chris Jensen is investigating a drug ring and he's sure Alyssa is involved. Drugs had been found in some of her concrete statuary. He made a hourly driveby of her property so was close when she found the baby. It was obviously Vanessa's child and Chris felt bad about not being able to find the girl eight years ago. Chris stays and helps Alyssa care for the baby but after he leaves she takes the sleeping baby out to the workshop so she can finish the concrete she was unable to pour. Alyssa finishes her work but the baby begins to fuss so she rocks him and falls asleep.

Alyssa wakes to find a couple of men stuffing something in her still wet lamb molds. She calls Chris for help and the two of them investigate who was smuggling drugs in her work. They find her sister and return the baby to his mom but find themselves in serious trouble. Are the human traffickers the ones who are the drug smugglers or have they got more than one group out to kill them? A great journey that draws the two together but before they can have a life together they have to put an end to this evil. You may purchase this book at the address below.

Great Read
By Jessica Cassinat
I loved this book. Love Inspired Suspense has always been a fun read for me. I like trying to guess who done it? But I really like that Love Inspired books are clean, so no sex or dirty language. I really liked how Rachelle managed to tell two different stories, but centered around two identical sisters. It was great fun! Enjoy and well worth the money.

Twin Threat Christmas: One Silent Night/Danger in the Manger
By Readers Corner
Twin sisters, Vanessa and Alyssa, were separated eight years ago when Vanessa was kidnapped. Twin Threat Christmas is two stories in one. The first is told from Vanessa's perspective and the second is from Alyssa's perspective. All in one chaotic day. Sorry, but not my favorite from Ms. McCalla.

one of the best ever!!!
By Ruth Ann Smith
"Shadow of Turning", another great Love Inspired Romance Suspense from Valerie Hansen!! Sometimes folks with the strongest faith seem to be the ones who have the hardest hurdles in life. This was the life of Chancy. With Nate, the storm chaser, being weak in faith and Chancy being so strong, trusting, naive and always eager to help people, put them both in danger of being killed by someone wanting some antique pictures that Chancy had. The way Valerie weaves the lives of an antique dealer and a storm chasing Cessna 310 pilot together, is just awesome! Such a strong, brilliant, and exciting story with a wonderful and inspiring ending. I highly recommend this novel as well as anything written by Valerie Hansen. You will never be disappointed in her work. Congratulations to Valerie, for actually becoming a certified "Severe Weather Storm Spotter" with her husband's support and encouragement. May God continue His Blessings on you, Valerie.

Sweet

Serenity Series
Book 3

This was a very easy but exciting, read. The book starts out a bit slow with a couple of characters that just can't seem to get along. I must admit that I sided with Chancy in the issue of Nate's grandparents. I didn't like the way he was trying to tell them what to do and he seemed to be degrading them in the way he was pushing them from their home. I was pleased when Chancy came, determined to talk them out of their decision!

And though I could see the "storm" from a mile away, I thought it was still interesting. The twist near the end of the story was an added bonus!

On the romance: both weren't really looking for it, but then that's when it usually happens. I liked the ending though. The suspense was much better than the romance in this one!

One of my favorite Diana Palmer books.
By A Customer
Diana Palmer has written only a few times for the special edition line, but THE AUSTRALIAN is one of my all-time favorite romance novels. This book takes place both in Hawaii, where the heroine goes to college, and in Australia. Ms. Palmer gives us just the right amount of Australian history and culture to be interesting without dragging the book down. It is hard for me to pinpoint why I enjoy this book so much because there are many reasons. I love the hero. He is strong, honorable, and, most importantly, in love. I say this because sometimes I find the heroes love unconvincing. And, although the heroine is young, her pain at their initial parting is acute and believable. The hero's financial problems keep the two apart and also give the heroine a chance to grow while away at college. I think I'm a sucker for love that lasts over years even when the couple isn't together. This makes the happy ending all the sweeter to me.

When I first started reading it I thought it was pretty good, but then I just wanted to give John Sterling a good swift kick in the butt... and Priscilla Johnson too for putting up with him. The biggest problem with DP books: the men always seem to treat the women terribly and the women take it... when they should get a little pride and self-respect and deck him or leave him. I guess there wouldn't be a story if there wasn't angst, but four or five years of it? All because a stupid man couldn't admit he was bankrupt? He treats her badly and then SHE feels guilty?!
It was totally unbelieveable that neither one of them met or got involved with anyone else in all that time. And why do all the women remain virgins just waiting for the man of their dreams (who's been around the block more than a few times) to notice them? Somewhere along the line wouldn't she be the slightest bit attracted to another man? Preferably one who treated her better...
If you like Diana Palmer books read it, but they're all beginning to sound alike to me. That said, I love Diana Palmer books and have read every one I've gotten my hands on... but that doesn't mean I don't have complaints about them. Just once I'd like to read one that didn't have a domineering, prideful, chauvinistic pig rescuing(?) a simple-minded, long-suffering, virginal idiot.

THE AUSTRALIAN...

For two years Priscilla Johnson watched John Sterling manage his cattle station, and at the tender age of eighteen she innocently surrendered her young heart to him. He was big, brash, brazen and Australian. Everyone called it infatuation, Priss knew it was love.

But Priscilla had to move on with her life. Four years at college in Hawaii provided the time and distance to transform a naive girl into a desirable, mature woman.

Returning to Australia as a certified teacher, she was ready to put John to the test. And ready or not, he was about to learn a lesson he would never forget.
