Loved it
By S. Frank
Terrific action and suspense, with an excellent romance added in. Nick and Annalise had grown up as neighbors, with Nick being her brother's best friend. She felt as though she'd loved him forever, but Nick doesn't get close to anyone. He left home at eighteen and didn't come back until he found out Gage was missing. He came back to check on her and one thing led to another. Then he left again.

Six months later she comes to River City looking for her brother, who has gone to work for the Paynes. She's worried about him and she needs his help. Her house has been broken into multiple times. Instead, he is gone and she runs into Nick instead. Who immediately notices her baby bump, and rightly guesses who is responsible. He's also worried when he hears about the attacks and break-ins. He's certain that she is in danger because of him and is determined to protect her and the baby.

Annalise isn't all that happy about being close to Nick again. It's bringing back all her feelings for him and she doesn't want to get her heart broken again. It's obvious to her that he doesn't feel the same way or he wouldn't have been able to walk away so easily. But spending this much time with him, she's starting to get the feeling he's not as indifferent as she thought he was. All she has to do is show him what they could have together.

Nick grew up with an addict for a mother and no father. The closest thing to family that he had was Gage and Annalise. Gage was his friend, one who looked up to him and followed him into the Marines. Nick feels responsible for whatever had happened to him on his last deployment. Nick also feels guilty about sleeping with Annalise, because that's against the friend code. He can't deny the desire he feels for her, but he knows that she's looking for love, Not only has he never experienced it, he's not even sure what it feels like.

I ached for both of them because they were so sure that what they wanted was impossible. Annalise had a little more hope, because she knew that Nick was a good man and capable of more than he thinks. She just has no idea how to make him see it. Nick couldn't see that his protectiveness toward her was a big indicator of what his feelings were, but everyone around him could. It wasn't until he nearly lost her that he could admit it even to himself. I loved his big moment in the hospital.

The suspense of the story was really good, From the beginning the attacks seemed to be almost nonstop. Nick was certain that it was one of his enemies that was after him, and who had decided to use Annelise to get to him. But the more they looked at it, the more things didn't seem to add up. I loved the way that it was Nikki Payne, the sibling everyone tried to protect, that played the biggest part in figuring it out. I also loved seeing how all the members of the family were involved, always making sure that no one did anything unsupported. The final confrontation was intense and scary, especially with Annelise in such danger. I loved her part in ending it.

One of the biggest themes of the book was family. Nick discovered upon his mother's death that he was half-brother to the other Paynes. Though they were shocked and angry at first, since then all but Nikki have come to accept him. In this book, the relationship that develops between them actually began to be much more sibling-like. I loved their back and forth, especially when Nikki realized that she gets more respect from him than from her other brothers. I also loved the way that Penny Payne considered Nick to be one of her kids, even though he wasn't. Their connection was amazing. It took a long time for Nick to realize that he really does have a family now. I loved the wedding scene at the end.

Good Book - Recommend it
By The eBook Investigator
Bodyguard's Baby Surprise by Lisa Childs was a good book on this rainy afternoon. It was very engaging.

Annalise has loved Nick her whole life. They grew up next door to each other and Annalise and her brother Gage looked up to him. He was their hero. But it was more than that for her. She loved him deeply and couldn't remember a time when she didn't love him.

Nick was closed off with very tall and thick walls around his heart. His mother was a drug addict and their roles were reversed. He didn't experience love from his mom so therefore he thought he was unlovable. He also believed since he had never seen what love looked like he would be incapable of giving love. He did his best throughout his life to push Annalise away so sure he would be incapable of loving her. But Annalise never gave up on him.

When Nick is back in their hometown he gives into the attraction he has always felt for her and they have a single night together. Now what bothers me is what we find out later in the story. Nick didn't use protection. When she awakes the next morning he is long gone. It hurt her terribly. Three months later she realizes she's pregnant with his child but chooses not to tell him since he so cavalierly left her and not once in six months does he try and reach her or check to see if she was pregnant. When he finally finds out he blames her for not contacting him. That really disturbed me.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it but it isn't one I will reread.

Good but redundant
By Hannah
Intriguing story, but had a lot of redundancies that could've been avoided. I would've liked more character development in the relationship but that could be due to it being book #3. You can say the heroine was sweet and kind and the hero has mommy/daddy issues more ways than one. Typical hot & sexy guy and sweet & innocent girl. Quite a few things were repeated throughout the story that fall on the editor. A bit more head hopping than I expected and confusing scene changes without blatant paragraph breakers. Also, all the family members were confusing right at the start. More hero/heroine interaction and "bad guy" insight would've tied it better. Still, a good story. I finished it the same day I purchased. I'm sure I'll check out the other books in the series.

Megan Bradley inhaled the sweet perfume of a champagne rose in her sister-in-law's garden. "Kate, I love your roses. Jack has outdone himself this time."

Kate smiled. "A belated wedding present but definitely worth the wait."

Megan's brother had planted the rose garden along one side of the newly built home on the family apple farm in Snowgum Creek. After a number of delays, the house had been completed a couple of months ago, but Kate's debilitating morning sickness had postponed their Saturday lunch housewarming until today.

Megan stretched out the muscles in her back, stiff after yesterday's long drive from Sydney. Family and friends gathered on the spacious wooden deck at the back of the sandy brick house overlooking the Snowy Mountains. Only one person was missing—her brother's best friend, Luke Morton. She needed to summon the courage to talk to Luke soon.

She lifted her arms above her head, releasing tension in her shoulders. "As much as I'd love to hide away and chat, we should mingle with your guests."

Kate nodded. "I've been ordered to take it easy. Your mom and Aunt Doris have taken over my kitchen, and Jack is in charge of our new outdoor grill."

Megan straightened the hem of her lilac shirt. "They won't stop fussing over you until the baby arrives." She grinned. "I can't wait to meet my little nephew or niece."

Kate placed her hand on her slightly rounded abdomen. "Hopefully bub won't arrive early. I'd like some time to get settled in the house first."

A black Jeep meandered along a narrow dirt track leading to the house. Megan sucked in a deep breath, her pulse skyrocketing.

Kate lifted a brow. "I told you Luke was coming."

"I know." A busy doctor, Luke Morton had probably been delayed at the Snowgum Creek Medical Clinic. "I need to ask Jack something." She strode toward the back deck, away from Luke, who had parked his Jeep under a gum tree near the front of the house.

Kate followed close on her heels. "You can't run away from him forever."

"I'm not running." She frowned. Who was she kidding? She'd spent eight years trying to forget the events that had transpired the last time she'd seen him. "And I will talk to him today." Assuming he was willing to talk to her.

Megan left Kate chatting with friends and walked over to her brother. Jack stood near the grill on the far side of the deck, a broad smile covering his tanned face. She was glad he'd married her best friend a few years ago, and that he now looked forward to becoming a father later this year.

She breathed in the tantalizing aroma of barbecued beef. "Something smells good." Rib-eye steaks sizzled on the grill.

Jack nodded. "Lunch is nearly ready." He turned over a couple of steaks. "How are you?"

She pasted a bright smile on her face. "I'm fine. A bit tired from the drive yesterday." She'd arrived after dinner, exhausted from her last-minute rush yesterday morning to pack up all her belongings in her Chatswood apartment.

"How long are you visiting with Mom and Dad?"

"I'm not sure." Her family was unaware of her potential job opportunities and the strong possibility she might live in Snowgum Creek for the next twelve months. The longest period she would live in one place since she'd completed her exercise physiology studies in Sydney eight years before.

His lips formed a wry smile. "Luke is heading our way."

Megan spun around and flicked her long dark hair back over her shoulders. Luke's golden-brown eyes met her gaze, his face devoid of emotion as he wove his way through the guests gathering around tables on the deck.

She wiped clammy hands down the sides of her designer-label black fitted pants, holding his gaze and refusing to look away first. Her heart danced to a faster beat as old feelings, long forgotten, washed over her. He was leaner and fitter than she remembered, decked out in a casual shirt and jeans. His face had matured and his honey-brown hair was cropped short. No surprise he was considered the most eligible bachelor in Snowgum Creek.

Jack stepped forward and shook Luke's hand, stealing his attention. "Glad you could make it."

"Sorry I'm late. I had to fit in a couple of extra patients."

"No worries, we're just about to sit down and eat."

Luke turned to Megan, his intense gaze searching her face. "It's been a long time."

"Yep." She nibbled her lower lip, words escaping her. He still had the ability to scatter her thoughts.

Jack cleared his throat. "I'll be back in a few minutes."

Luke nodded. "Do you need me to do anything?"

"Can you watch the grill? We're putting the meat platters on the tables."

"No problem." Luke picked up an empty white ceramic platter.

"Thanks." Jack stepped away from the grill. "I think we're organized and ready to serve lunch."

Her brother headed indoors and an awkward silence followed Jack's departure. Luke filled a couple of platters with juicy steaks and she distributed the platters to nearby tables.

She lingered beside the grill. "Is there anything else I can do?"

"No, I think we're all right." He added a row of steaks to the grill. "You're looking well." Luke's eyes softened, his velvet voice sending her pulse into overdrive.

"Thanks." She twisted a lock of hair around her finger. "I hear you've taken over Dr. Davidson's medical clinic."

"He retired last year, and the clinic provided a great opportunity to move back home from Sunny Ridge."

"That makes sense." His dream eight years ago had been to finish med school and own a medical clinic in Snowgum Creek. A dream she hadn't shared. Her yearning had been to travel and explore the world.

"I'm glad to be back. Snowgum Creek is a thriving town, unlike many small towns in this region."

"Kate said Sunny Ridge is booming, too."

"It has experienced significant growth over the last decade." He checked the remaining steaks on the grill. "Did you know Sunny Ridge is now officially classified as a city?"

"Really?" She inspected her fingernails. They'd need a manicure if she helped Jack and his workers pick the last of the apple crop next week. "I heard your medical clinic is expanding."

"Yes. It keeps me busy. My schedule this morning was jam-packed and I ran overtime."

"Is that normal?"

"Sometimes. It depends on the day." Jack returned and Luke handed over the cooking utensils.

"Thanks." Jack smiled. "You two should sit down and enjoy lunch."

Luke turned toward her, indicating two spare seats at a nearby table. "Would you like to join me?"

"Sure." He held out a chair and she slipped into the wooden seat. How many times had they practiced this ritual during their four-year relationship in college?

Luke sat beside her and together they served their lunch of steak, salad and crusty French bread rolls. Megan made small talk with a couple of Jack's friends who she hadn't seen in years. Her short visits back home over the past eleven years hadn't included catching up with the townsfolk. Luke seemed at ease beside her, chatting with the other guests.

His forearm brushed against her elbow and she tensed, aware of his presence only inches away. She concentrated on her lunch, her traitorous heart liking his close proximity. The moment everyone at their table had finished, she stood and started clearing their plates.

"I'll help." Luke collected a few empty platters and walked with her to the kitchen.

Alone with Luke, she focused on loading the plates and cutlery into the dishwasher.

He leaned back against the kitchen counter, arms crossed over his muscular chest. "Are you here for the weekend or longer?"

"I haven't decided."

"Did you take leave from work?"

She shook her head. "I'm between jobs at the moment.

Please pass on my congratulations to Ben and Amy, by the way."

"I will. They arrived back from their honeymoon a few weeks ago."

"Where did they go?"

"Batemans Bay, one of Ben's favorite fishing spots. They were supposed to be here today but my niece is sick with a cold."

"I hope she gets well soon." She pulled out the top rack, already halffull with cups and glasses. "Um, can we talk?"

"Sure, what about?"

"No, not here. Can we go somewhere where we won't be overheard?"

He raised an eyebrow. "It has taken you long enough to finally decide to talk."

Touché. She lowered her lashes, knowing she had hurt him. At least he was prepared to talk.

"How about a walk in the orchards?" he asked.

Like old times. How often had they snuck away into the orchards? Her cheeks flushed as memories of her final year of high school invaded her thoughts.

She squared her shoulders. "I'll finish cleaning the kitchen first."

"I'll meet you at my Jeep in ten minutes." A smile curved up the corners of his lips. "If we're not discreet, the gossips will have us married off by the end of the afternoon."

"True, they don't need any encouragement."

"See you soon." He left the kitchen, his boots tapping on the wooden floorboards as he headed toward the veranda.

She filled the top rack with cups and bowls from the sink and switched on the dishwasher. Luke seemed okay with her temporary return to Snowgum Creek, but was he prepared to make this a more permanent arrangement? Could she convince him to rent her a consulting room in his medical clinic?

Ten minutes later, Luke let himself out the front door of Jack and Kate's home and headed over to his Jeep. He walked around the vehicle and found Megan slouched against the door, her beautiful dark blue eyes squinting in the early-afternoon sunlight.

His heart constricted, bittersweet memories filling his mind. Jack had warned him that she'd be here today, but he hadn't been prepared for the deluge of feelings that had smashed through him when his gaze had locked with hers. Eight years had passed, and he still wasn't immune to her charms.

"Which way should we walk?" he asked.

She stood straighter, rolling her shoulders. "Toward the pine trees."

He nodded. The obvious solution since that part of the orchard wasn't visible from the house. He fell into step with her, his curiosity building. Why had she sought him out after all these years?

They walked between rows of apple trees, passing wombat burrows on the edge of the path.

He ducked under a low-lying apple branch, heavy with ripe fruit. "Do emus still visit the dam?"

She shrugged. "You'll have to ask Jack."

He remembered hiding with her at the far end of the orchard and watching a pair of emus skirt around the dam, their heads bobbing on their long necks as they walked. Occasionally a platypus would pop its head out of the water. Kangaroos had bounded through the orchards at dawn and dusk. Scare guns had echoed at regular intervals, deterring the cockatoos and other birds from feasting on the apples.

The breeze lifted her glossy hair off her shoulders, a few wisps blowing in front of her face. She looked exactly the same as he'd remembered, with only a couple of fine lines now crinkling at the corners of her eyes when she smiled. Her face was lightly tanned and her body toned, presumably from regular workout sessions at the gym.

"What do you want to talk about?" he asked.

She pressed her lips together. "My work."

Kate had told him about Megan's nomadic lifestyle. Ski instructor at the Snowy Mountains every winter, and short-term exercise physiology contract work in Sydney fitted in around overseas trips. "You must be heading off to the snow soon."

"Actually, I'm not going this year."

He paused, turning to face her. "But you go to the snow every year."

She stared at the ground, kicking a stick with her black leather boot.

He frowned. Something didn't add up. She had been obsessed with skiing for as long as he could remember. He had it on good authority from Kate that she loved her regular ski instructor job at the Snowy Mountains resort village.

"Are you injured?"

Her eyes widened. "Physically I'm fine and my knees are in good shape." She traced her finger over a ripe Granny Smith apple hanging on a low branch. "It's time for a change, that's all."

She wasn't telling him the full story but it wasn't his prerogative to push for information. Eight years ago she had made his place in her life crystal clear.

She drew in a deep breath. "I'm looking to stay in Snow-gum Creek for a while."

He narrowed his eyes. "What does that have to do with me?"

"I've been offered a contract with Sunny Ridge and Snowgum Creek hospitals."

"I'm glad to hear they're planning to expand their services." Many of his elderly patients struggled to travel for two hours to Sunny Ridge to access essential health services that weren't available in Snowgum Creek.

She nodded. "They're very keen to employ me but only for three days a week. One day a week in Sunny Ridge, where the job is based, and two days in Snowgum Creek. I would need a second job to supplement my income."

"Have you heard the health club has been redeveloped?"

"Yes. Kate is very excited about the new facilities."

"The townsfolk spent a couple of years lobbying and fund-raising to build the facility. The hospital has access to the heated pool." It seemed as though everyone in town had a stake in the new fitness center and indoor pool complex.

"Another reason why they are prepared to employ an exercise physiologist who works at both hospitals."

"That makes sense. From what I've seen, the gym facilities would suit rehab patients."

She nodded. "I'm looking to set up my own business, consulting to private patients and personal training at the gym. I need to rent a consulting room a few days a week, and you own the only medical clinic in town with extra space."

His mouth fell open. She wanted to work with him in his clinic. He stood taller, shaking his head. "I do want to lease the space but I'm looking for long-term tenants."

"I'm prepared to sign a twelve-month contract with an option to extend."

"Seriously?" She was prepared to live in one place for a whole year? He had his doubts.

"The hospital contract is for a year minimum."

"What about skiing? And overseas holidays?" Could she sacrifice her jet-setting lifestyle and settle in a small town?

"It can wait." She placed her hands on her hips and lifted her chin. "I'm committed to this new direction for my life."

He tugged his mouth into a firm line. "You know you can't leave your patients and clients without care if you decide to run off overseas or to the ski slopes for a few months. And since I'm going to be one of the doctors referring patients to you, I need to feel confident you'll be around to look after them."

Her wide eyes pleaded for his understanding. "All I can give you is my word. I know why you think I'm unreliable…."

He rubbed his hand through his hair. "This is a business decision." A decision clouded by his personal judgments and past experiences.

"There are currently no exercise physiologists in Snowgum Creek." She sighed. "You know the health club is fully equipped to suit my needs. I promise you, I'm not going to run off in breach of my contracts."

Unlike the way she ran off the night he'd proposed marriage. A week later she was in Whistler, Canada, at a ski resort. He'd been a struggling med student who would have done anything for her, made enormous sacrifices to keep her happy. Instead, he'd learned the hard way that she was more committed to her freedom than to him.

Now their lives had intersected on an unfamiliar path, and she was the one asking him for favors. Despite being drawn to her, he couldn't risk his heart by getting involved again. Working with her, seeing her on a regular basis, would be an added complication.

He couldn't ignore the fact that his patients were on waiting lists for services Megan could provide. Services they might not receive if he declined Megan's request and she chose to leave Snowgum Creek. "Okay, I'll think about it." Against my better judgment.

She smiled, her face vibrant in the afternoon sunlight. "Thank you. I appreciate your help and I won't let you down."

"It's not a done deal yet, and I need to talk to my legal people first." He tipped his head to the side. "Do you really want a one-year contract with an option to negotiate an extension?"

"Yes, please." Her blue eyes gleamed. "I promise you won't regret this."

He swallowed hard. Could he put aside their past history and build a successful working relationship for the benefit of the Snowgum Creek community? Could he afford not to?

Megan Bradley left her hometown of Snowgum Creek eight years ago, right after Luke Morton proposed, and never looked back. She wanted to travel the world and explore. Now she is back in town. But how long will she stay this time?

Luke Morton is a doctor. He has opened a medical clinic in town. Luke was hurt when Megan left town the first time. Should he give her a second chance? Can he handle it if she leaves town again?

This book is about second chances, learning to trust someone, but especially learning to trust God. Megan has grown away from her faith while traveling around the world, out of touch with her friends and family. Once she comes back home and gets her exercise physiology consulting practice started, she realizes what she has missed. Having her friends and family close by and growing close to God again show her always being on the go and never settling down keep her from establishing strong relationships. But when a once in a lifetime opportunity presents itself, can she be happy staying in Snowgum Creek and not miss her old lifestyle? Can she give up Luke to follow her dream job, knowing if she leaves this time, she will lose him for good?

Luke realizes he never stopped loving Megan, but can he trust her not to run off with his heart again? He values doing God’s work, but does Megan feel the same way? Luke has to learn to put past hurts behind him in order to have a chance at a future with Megan.

I loved this book by Narelle Atkins! The Doctor’s Return is a sweet inspirational romance. Even when you’re not sure which way to go, God is there in the details. He is the God of love and of second chances. Put your trust in Him. Luke and Megan are great characters and I love the hometown of Snowgum Creek.

Another awesome story in this series. Fell in love with Luke in the last book and it was great fun to read his story now. Young love gone wrong when he proposed to Megan after they dated for a few years. She wasn't ready to settle down and ran and she's been running since. Now she's back in town and working in close quarters with him. Their friendship is renewed and then the feelings reappear. He can't trust her to not run, and she can't trust herself not to either. But there's a reason she's come back home after all these years. When she's given a new opportunity in her career, they both have to decide what is most important in their lives.

This story takes place in Australia and while I am used to reading many many more books that take place in America, it's fun to have to remind myself that when they are talking about international travel, they just might be talking USA. It's also fun to learn new things about other countries. Got a real kick out of the sheep incident, having tried to drive through flocks of sheep on numerous occasions myself.

One of the best!

The Doctor's Return...another great Heartsong novel by a lovely Christian lady, Narelle Atkins. They say "you can't go home again", BUT, Megan Bradley is a character that desired both power and love with the hearts strong desire to travel as opposed to staying in the same place forever, especially a small place like Snowgum Creek. However, the heart stopping handsome Doctor, Luke Morton, was a home town boy with no desire to travel the globe! Could he convince his long lost love that one COULD go home again?...This awesome story is filled with hope, love of God and family, faith and commitment... It is definitely a page turner, and I felt so privileged to be reading such a brilliant and sweet love story. I am certainly a lover of happy endings and I highly recommend this book to everyone loving a good Christian romance novel. I took the book to the hospital as I had to go for surgery and I read this entire book the first day I felt human again..and enjoyed every word! Thanks Narelle, for another winner!!

He'd chosen it for the atmosphere. Ryan was certain of it the moment she saw the house on the cliff. It was stone gray and solitary. It turned its back on the Pacific. It wasn't a symmetrical structure, but rambling, with sections of varying heights rising up here and there, giving it a wild sort of grace. High at the top of a winding cliff road, with the backdrop of an angry sky, the house was both magnificent and eerie.

Like something out of an old movie, Ryan decided as she shifted into first to take the climb. She had heard Pierce Atkins was eccentric. The house seemed to testify to that.

All it needs, she mused, is a thunderclap, a little fog and the howl of a wolf; just some minor special effects. Amused at the thought, she drew the car to a stop and looked the house over again. You wouldn't see many like it only a hundred and fifty miles north of L.A. You wouldn't, she corrected silently, see many like it anywhere.

The moment she slid from the car, the wind pulled at her, whipping her hair around her face and tugging at her skirt. She was tempted to go to the seawall and take a look at the ocean but hurried up the steps instead. She hadn't come to admire the view.

The knocker was old and heavy. It gave a very impressive thud when she pounded it against the door. Ryan told herself she wasn't the least bit nervous but switched her briefcase from hand to hand as she waited. Her father would be furious if she walked away without Pierce Atkins's signature on the contracts she carried. No, not furious, she amended. Silent. No one could use silence more effectively than Bennett Swan.

I'm not going to walk away empty-handed, she assured herself. I know how to handle temperamental entertainers. I've spent years watching how it's done and—

Her thoughts were cut off as the door opened. Ryan stared. Staring back at her was the largest man she had ever seen. He was at least six foot five, with shoulders that all but filled the doorway. And his face. Ryan decided he was, indisputably, the ugliest human being she had ever seen. His broad face was pale. His nose had obviously been broken and had reknit at an odd angle. His eyes were small, a washed-out brown that matched his thick mat of hair. Atmosphere, Ryan thought again. Atkins must have chosen him for atmosphere.

"Good afternoon," she managed. "Ryan Swan. Mr. Atkins is expecting me."

"Miss Swan." The slow, barrel-deep voice suited him perfectly. When the man stepped back, Ryan found herself fighting a reluctance to enter. Storm clouds, a hulking butler and a brooding house on a cliff. Oh, yes, she decided. Atkins knows how to set the stage.

She walked in. As the door closed behind her, Ryan took a quick glimpse around. "Wait here," the laconic butler instructed and walked, lightly for a big man, down the hall.

"Of course, thank you very much," she muttered to his back.

The walls were white and draped with tapestries. The one nearest her was a faded medieval scene depicting the young Arthur drawing the sword from the stone, with Merlin the Enchanter highlighted in the background. Ryan nodded. It was an exquisite piece of work and suited to a man like Atkins. Turning, she found herself staring at her own reflection in an ornate cheval glass.

It annoyed her to see that her hair was mussed. She represented Swan Productions. Ryan pushed at the stray misty blond wisps. The green of her eyes had darkened with a mixture of anxiety and excitement. Her cheeks were flushed with it. Taking a deep breath, she ordered herself to calm down. She straightened her jacket.

Hearing footsteps, she quickly turned away from the mirror. She didn't want to be caught studying herself or attempting last-minute repairs. It was the butler again, alone. Ryan repressed a surge of annoyance.

"He'll see you downstairs."

"Oh." Ryan opened her mouth to say something else, but he was already retreating. She had to scramble to keep up.

The hall wound to the right. Ryan's heels clicked quickly as she trotted to match the butler's pace. Then he stopped so abruptly, she nearly collided with his back.

"Down there." He had opened a door and was already walking away.

"But…" Ryan scowled after him, then made her way down the dimly lighted steps. Really, this was ridiculous, she thought. A business meeting should be conducted in an office, or at least in a suitable restaurant. Show business, she mused scornfully.

The sound of her own footfalls echoed back at her. There was no sound at all from the room below. Oh, yes, she concluded, Atkins knows how to set the stage. She was beginning to dislike him intensely. Her heart was hammering uncomfortably as she rounded the last curve in the winding staircase.

The lower floor was huge, a sprawling room with crates and trunks and paraphernalia stacked all around. The walls were paneled and the floor was tiled, but no one had bothered with any further decoration. Ryan looked around, frowning, as she walked down the last of the steps.

He watched her. He had the talent for absolute stillness, absolute concentration. It was essential to his craft. He also had the ability to sum up a person quickly. That, too, was part of his profession. She was younger than he had expected, a fragile-looking woman, small in stature, slight in build, with clouds of pale hair and a delicately molded face. A strong chin.

She was annoyed, he noted, and not a little apprehensive. A smile tugged at his mouth. Even after she began to wander around the room, he made no move to go to her. Very businesslike, he thought, with her trim, tailored suit, sensible shoes, expensive briefcase and very feminine hands. Interesting.

"Miss Swan."

Ryan jolted, then swore at herself. Turning in the direction of the voice, she saw only shadows.

"You're very prompt."

He moved then, and Ryan saw that he stood on a small stage. He wore black and blended with the shadows. With an effort, she kept the annoyance from her voice. "Mr. Atkins." Ryan went toward him then, fixing on a trained smile. "You have quite a house."

"Thank you."

He didn't come down to her but stood on the stage. Ryan was forced to look up at him. It surprised her that he was more dramatic in person than on tape. Normally, she had found the reverse to be true. She had seen his performances. Indeed, since her father had taken ill and reluctantly turned Atkins over to her, Ryan had spent two entire evenings watching every available tape on Pierce Atkins.

Dramatic, she decided, noting a raw-boned face with a thick, waving mane of black hair. There was a small scar along his jawline, and his mouth was long and thin. His brows were arched with a slight upsweep at the tips. But it was the eyes under them which held her. She had never seen eyes so dark, so deep. Were they gray? Were they black? Yet it wasn't their color that disconcerted her, it was the absolute concentration in them. She felt her throat go dry and swallowed in defense. She could almost believe he was reading her mind.

He had been called the greatest magician of the decade, some said the greatest of the last half of the century. His illusions and escapes were daring, flashy and unexplainable. It was a common thing to hear of him referred to as a wizard. Staring into his eyes, Ryan began to understand why.

She shook herself free of the trance and started again. She didn't believe in magic. "Mr. Atkins, my father apologizes for not being able to come himself. I hope—"

"He's feeling better."

Confused, she stopped. "Yes. Yes, he is." She found herself staring again.

Pierce smiled as he stepped down to her. "He phoned an hour ago, Miss Swan. Long-distance dialing, no telepathy." Ryan glared before she could stop herself, but his smile only widened. "Did you have a nice drive?"

"Yes, thank you."

"But a long one," he said. "Sit." Pierce gestured to a table, then took a chair behind it. Ryan sat opposite him.

"Mr. Atkins," she began, feeling more at ease now that business was about to begin. "I know my father has discussed Swan Productions' offer with you and your representative at length, but perhaps you'd like to go over the details again." She set her briefcase on the table. "I could clarify any questions you might have."

"Have you worked for Swan Productions long, Miss Swan?"

The question interrupted the flow of her presentation, but Ryan shifted her thoughts. Entertainers often had to be humored. "Five years, Mr. Atkins. I assure you, I'm qualified to answer your questions and negotiate terms if necessary."

Her voice was very smooth, but she was nervous. Pierce saw it in the careful way she folded her hands on the table. "I'm sure you're qualified, Miss Swan," he agreed. "Your father isn't an easy man to please."

Surprise and a trace of apprehension flickered into her eyes. "No," she said calmly, "which is why you can be sure of receiving the best promotion, the best production staff, the best contract available. Three one-hour television specials over three years, guaranteed prime time, with a budget that ensures quality." She paused only for a moment. "An advantageous arrangement for you and for Swan Productions."

"Perhaps."

He was looking at her too closely. Ryan forced herself not to fidget. Gray, she saw. His eyes were gray—as dark as was possible without being black.

"Of course," she continued, "your career has been aimed primarily at live audiences in clubs and theaters. Vegas, Tahoe, the London Palladium and so forth."

"An illusion means nothing on film, Miss Swan. Film can be altered."

"Yes, I realize that. To have any impact, a trick has to be performed live."

"Illusion," Pierce corrected. "I don't do tricks."

Ryan stopped. His eyes were steady on hers. "Illusion," she amended with a nod. "The specials would be broadcasted live, with a studio audience as well. The publicity—"

"You don't believe in magic, do you, Miss Swan?" There was the slightest of smiles on his mouth, the barest trace of amusement in his voice.

"Mr. Atkins, you're a very talented man," she said carefully.

"I admire your work."

"A diplomat," he concluded, leaning back. "And a cynic. I like that."

Ryan didn't feel complimented. He was laughing at her without making the smallest attempt to conceal it. Your job, she reminded herself as her teeth clenched. Do your job. "Mr. Atkins, if we could discuss the terms of the contract—"

"I don't do business with anyone until I know who they are." Ryan let out a quick breath. "My father—"

"I'm not talking to your father," Pierce interrupted smoothly.

"I didn't think to type up a bio," she snapped, then bit her tongue. Damn! She couldn't afford to lose her temper. But Pierce grinned, pleased.

"I don't think that will be necessary." He had her hand in his before she realized what he was doing.

"Nevermore."

The voice from behind had Ryan jolting in her chair.

"That's just Merlin," Pierce said mildly as she twisted her head.

There was a large black myna bird in a cage to her right. Ryan took a deep breath and tried to steady her nerves. The bird was staring at her.

"Very clever," she managed, eyeing the bird with some reservation. "Did you teach him to talk?"

"Mmm."

"Buy you a drink, sweetie?"

Wide-eyed, Ryan gave a muffled laugh as she turned back to Pierce. He merely gave the bird a careless glance. "I haven't taught him manners."

She struggled not to be amused. "Mr. Atkins, if we could—"

"Your father wanted a son." Ryan forgot what she had been about to say and stared at him. "That made it difficult for you." Pierce was looking into her eyes again, her hand held loosely in his. "You're not married, you live alone. You're a realist who considers herself very practical. You find it difficult to control your temper, but you work at it. You're a very cautious woman, Miss Swan, slow to trust, careful in relationships. You're impatient because you have something to prove—to yourself and to your father."

His eyes lost their intense directness when he smiled at her. "A parlor game, Miss Swan, or telepathy?" When Pierce released her hand, Ryan pulled it from the table into her lap. She hadn't cared for his accuracy.

"A little amateur psychology," he said comfortably, enjoying her stunned expression. "A basic knowledge of Bennett Swan and an understanding of body language." He shrugged his shoulders. "No trick, Miss Swan, just educated guesswork. How close was I?"

Ryan gripped her hands together in her lap. Her right palm was still warm from his. "I didn't come here to play games, Mr. Atkins."

"No." He smiled again, charmingly. "You came to close a deal, but I do things in my own time, in my own way. My profession encourages eccentricity, Miss Swan. Humor me."

"I'm doing my best," Ryan returned, then took a deep breath and sat back. "I think it's safe to say that we're both very serious about our professions."

"Agreed."

"Then you understand that it's my job to sign you with Swan, Mr. Atkins." Perhaps a bit of flattery would work, she decided. "We want you because you're the best in your field."

"I'm aware of that," he answered without batting an eye.

"Aware that we want you or that you're the best?" she found herself demanding.

He flashed her a very appealing grin. "Of both."

Ryan took a deep breath and reminded herself that entertainers were often impossible. "Mr. Atkins," she began.

With a flutter of wings, Merlin swooped out of his cage and landed on her shoulder. Ryan gasped and froze.

"Oh, God," she murmured. This was too much, she thought numbly. Entirely too much.

Pierce frowned at the bird as it settled its wings. "Odd, he's never done that with anyone before."

"Aren't I lucky," Ryan muttered, sitting perfectly still. Did birds bite? she wondered. She decided she didn't care to wait to find out. "Do you think you could—ah, persuade him to perch somewhere else?"

A slight gesture of Pierce's hand had Merlin leaving Ryan's shoulder to land on his own.

"Mr. Atkins, please, I realize a man in your profession would have a taste for—atmosphere." Ryan took a breath to steady herself, but it didn't work. "It's very difficult to discuss business in—in a dungeon," she said with a sweep of her arm. "With a crazed raven swooping down on me and…"

Pierce's shout of laughter cut her off. On his shoulder the bird settled his wings and stared, steely-eyed, at Ryan. "Ryan Swan, I'm going to like you. I work in this dungeon," he explained good-naturedly. "It's private and quiet. Illusions take more than skill; they take a great deal of planning and preparation."

"I understand that, Mr. Atkins, but—"

"We'll discuss business more conventionally over dinner," he interrupted.

Ryan rose as he did. She hadn't planned to stay more than an hour or two. It was a good thirty-minute drive down the cliff road to her hotel.

"You'll stay the night," Pierce added, as if he had indeed read her thoughts.

"I appreciate your hospitality, Mr. Atkins," she began, following as he walked back to the stairs, the bird remaining placidly on his shoulder. "But I have a reservation at a hotel in town. Tomorrow—"

"Do you have your bags?" Pierce stopped to take her arm before he mounted the steps.

"Yes, in the car, but—"

"Link will cancel your reservation, Miss Swan. We're in for a storm." He turned his head to glance at her. "I wouldn't like to think of you driving these roads tonight."

As if to accentuate his words, a blast of thunder greeted them as they came to the top of the stairs. Ryan murmured something. She wasn't certain she wanted to think of spending the night in this house.

"Nothing up my sleeve," Merlin announced.

She shot him a dubious look.

Old tales retold
By S. Gould
This anthology brings back three old stories by Ms. Roberts, THIS MAGIC MOMENT, SEARCH FOR LOVE, and THE RIGHT PATH. The writing is as compelling as ever but the stories are a bit dated and not quite as good as Roberts current works. For pure romance they work, but don't look for the edge of your seat suspense and sharp plotting of her more current novels. Perhaps the new title is what bothers me- MYSTERIOUS these stories are not.

Early Nora Roberts novels...
By LizardQueen
...are no match for the ones she's writing now. I picked up this collection because I was desperate for some light reading. I got it, but didn't quite have as much fun as I often do when reading NR. The first and third novels are entertaining, if unamazing. The characters were likeable enough, and the stories flowed well. The setting in the third story (a Greek island) is great. However, I pretty much hated the middle novel. I didn't really like any of the characters, and the romance turned my stomach -- I wanted to shake the "heroine" and tell her to punch the "hero," not kiss him. Oh well. My guess is that these novels (which, by the way, are not all that mysterious) were reprinted simply so the publisher could cash in on readers' love for Nora Roberts. There are NR novels from the '80s that are worth reading -- I liked the two in Irish Hearts, and I'm quite fond of Sacred Sins and Brazen Virtue. Sacred Sins is especially good if you're looking for mystery (Brazen Virtue falls more into the category of suspense). Homeport is another great NR mystery. Don't bother with Mysterious.

Please Nora, write something new!
By A Customer
I would rather go without reading for a long time than pick up one of these warmed-over, dated, irritating books. I know the publishing company is looking to make every cent they can on their star authors but they are turning off future N.R. readers. I can tell you, if this had been the first Nora Roberts book I read, I would never, ever, ever have read another.

Someone wants something he had, and suddely Caroline's life is in danger. Desperate, she flees back home to the one place she feels safe, The Three Sister's Inn, and her grandmother and sisters. But is home the safe haven she expected?
Zachary Burkholter, police chief of Churchville, Pennsylvania, stops Caroline for speeding the minute she hits town. From the way she behaves, he suspects she's hiding something. He plans to keep an eye on her, and not just because of his suspicion. Caroline is one attractive lady.
Marta Perry's Three Sister's Inn series is extremely delightful. I have enjoyed each book, but in my opinion this is her best. Readers who want their romance spiked with a dash of suspense will love this series. If you haven't discovered Marta Perry's stories, give them a try. You'll be glad you did.

The best of the series
By Jorge Frid
The other two books are almost a copycat but this one is entirely different. The other two are love stories, this is a "thrilling" love story. It has some loose ends but nonetheless is a very good reading and you can read this book without reading the other two. But you can't read the second book "A Christmas to Die For" with out reading the first one "Hide in Plain Sight".

Pleasant Surprise
By Christina R.
I was pleasantly surprised by this novel. It was very well written with an engrossing story line that has a lot of twists and turns. If you are looking for a novel that gives an in depth look at living Amish (as I was) this is not the one to buy. However I would recommend buying this one for the other reasons that I gave above. It is more than worth its low price. Also while religion figures into the story it is not presented in a "preachy" manner at all. A thoroughly entertaining read that should be appreciated by everyone.

Present day

The trill of a ringing phone woke Amanda Colton from a deep sleep, but her maternal instincts had her fully awake in seconds. She grabbed the phone before the next ring, praying the noise hadn't woken eight-month-old Cheyenne. Her daughter had been fussy last night at bedtime because of a stuffy nose, and Amanda had worked for two hours to get her to sleep.

She glanced at the alarm clock as she dragged the phone to her ear. 3:23 a.m.

Her gut tightened. Nothing good ever came of a call at three in the morning, and her family had had enough bad news and tragedy in the past several months to last a lifetime.

"Hello?" she said warily.

"Amanda, thank God! I need your help!"

Hearing the fear in her youngest sister's voice, Amanda sat up and shoved her hair from her face. "Gabby? What's wrong?"

"It's Peanut. I think he has colic, and he keeps trying to lie down!"

Dread speared her chest. "Oh, no."

Equine colic could be deadly, especially if the horse tried to roll on the ground, which could cause the intestine to become wrapped around itself.

Amanda tossed back the covers, disturbing the fuzzy orange cat sleeping beside her, and swung her feet to the floor. "Is Trevor there with you?"

Trevor Garth was head of security for the ranch. But more important, in this case, he was Gabriella's fiance.

"Not yet." Gabby's voice cracked, and she sniffed hard, clearly trying not to cry. "He's on his way. He said to call you."

Peanut, Gabby's horse, had been a birthday present when her sister was seven and Peanut was still a foal. Ga-briella and Peanut had grown up together and her softhearted sister loved the horse dearly. Amanda hated the idea of Gabriella losing Peanut.

"Who's going to stay with Avery?" Amanda asked, her mothering instincts again surging to the forefront when she thought of Trevor's infant daughter.

"Mathilda, I think. She— No, Peanut! Stop. Please, stop!"

"Okay, I'm on my way. Until I get there, do not let him lie down."

"I know he's supposed to stay up," Gabby said, her voice tense with frustration and panic, "but you try keeping a fourteen-hundred-pound animal on his feet when he wants to roll on the ground."

"Gabby, it's critical! Do whatever you have to." With one hand Amanda stepped into a pair ofjeans while she held the phone with her other hand. "Are any of the hands there? Do you have any help at all?"

"No. The place was deserted when I got here a little while ago."

Amanda groaned, lamenting the shortage of ranch help, thanks to the National Finals Rodeo competition taking place in Las Vegas that week. She shoved her feet in her boots without bothering with socks. "I'll make some calls, see who's around to help. Meantime, try to get Peanut to walk, even if just up and down the center aisle of the stable."

"Okay. Hurry!"

Amanda keyed off the connection to Gabby and pushed speed dial 4, ringing the land line in Tom Brooks's room. Tom was a retired Marine and former police officer who had been shot in the hip five years ago and forced to take a desk job. Trevor had hired him this summer after it became clear Cheyenne was the target of kidnappers. He answered with a crisp, "Tom Brooks."

Amanda tucked her night shirt into her jeans and grabbed a sweatshirt from a drawer. "Tom, it's Amanda. I'm so sorry to wake you, but there's been an emergency."

She heard the rustle of sheets and squeak of bed springs as Tom flew into action. "What's happened?"

"Gabriella's horse is sick."

"And you need me to guard Cheyenne while you see to the horse."

"Yes, please. I know you're supposed to be off duty, but—"

"No such thing as off-duty. My job is to protect that sweet babe of yours, whatever and whenever. I'll be there in two."

"Thank you, Tom. You're a godsend."

Amanda disconnected and stuck her cell phone in her back jeans pocket as she hurried into the adjoining room where her daughter slept. In the dim glow from the bunny-shaped night-light over the crib, Amanda peeked over the railing at her sleeping child. Her whole world. Her life.

As it always did whenever she looked at her precious baby girl, Amanda's heart swelled until she thought it might burst. How could someone so tiny and fragile stir such a deep, consuming love?

Cheyenne gave a snuffly sigh, and Amanda bit her bottom lip, concerned over the baby's congestion. Levi, Amanda's half-brother and the doctor who was caring full-time for her ill father, had assured her it was nothing but a cold, that Cheyenne would be fine in a couple days. But as a first-time mother, Amanda still fretted over every runny nose and hiccup.

Bending over the crib rail, Amanda rubbed Cheyenne's back and tucked the fuzzy pink blanket around her daughter's feet. Straightening, she whispered, "Oh, chickpea, what would I do without you?"

A soft knock heralded Tom's arrival, then he opened the door and peered into the nursery. "Miss Amanda?"

Amanda waved him in. "I don't know how long I'll be. Maybe all morning. If she wakes up all congested, Levi said to give her a dropperful of this." She handed him the decongestant bottle and backed toward the door. "Thanks again."

Tom nodded gravely. "Yes, ma'am. You go help that sick horse."

Amanda grabbed her veterinary bag from a bench at the foot of her bed and hesitated at the bedroom door. In recent months, it had become all too clear that her daughter was the target of kidnappers intending to extort money from Amanda's wealthy family. Leaving Cheyenne, even for a few minutes, even with a trained guard, always reminded Amanda how vulnerable Cheyenne was, how quickly her baby could be snatched, how devastated she'd be if anything happened to her daughter.

Tom noticed her hesitation and smiled. "Go on, Miss Amanda. I'll protect your little princess as if she were my own."

With a sigh and a smile of gratitude, Amanda ducked into the hall and hustled to the stairs. She took the steps two at a time, grabbed her work gloves and a parka from the back closet, and was practically running by the time she reached the back door. She'd just pulled her cell phone from her back pocket to start waking ranch hands when a tall dark-haired man barreled out of the employees' wing.

"Hey," she called, squinting in the darkness to determine which of the ranch hands he was. But when he raised his head, glancing her way as he strode briskly across the ranch yard, she didn't recognize him, and a tingle of apprehension crawled down her spine. In light of the recent tragedies at the ranch, a stranger wandering the grounds in the predawn hours sounded all kinds of alarms for Amanda. "Hey, stop right there, pal!"

The man stopped, shifting his weight restlessly and sending her an impatient glare as she hurried to catch up to him.

She returned a hostile stare, sizing him up as she approached him. "Who are you and what are you doing here?"

He flicked his black Stetson back from his face and frowned. The blue-white security lights cast harsh shadows across his square jaw and rugged cheeks. "Slade Kent. Word is there's a horse with colic needs tending, so I'm headed to the stable."

Somewhat mollified, Amanda hitched her chin for him to accompany her as she continued toward the stable. "So you're a new hand?"

"Who's asking?" Slade fell in step beside her, his long-legged strides outpacing her so that she was nearly jogging to keep up.

"I'm Amanda." When he sent her a look that said, So? she added, "Amanda Colton. Dead River Ranch belongs to my family. It's my sister's horse that has colic."

He gave a little nod. "I see. Well, ma'am, I promise to take good care of the horse. You can go back to the house and stay warm. I'll be sure someone keeps you posted on how the horse is doing."

His patronizing tone grated her already-stressed nerves, and she barked an ill-humored laugh. "I also happen to be a vet." She held up her medical bag. "I'll be the one treating Peanut."

He gave a dismissive scoff. "Unnecessary. Any ranch hand worth his salt has dealt with colic before. I don't need your help."

Her eyebrows shot up, and she gave him an incredulous look. "Oh, really? Who died and made you king?"

"Not king. Foreman. Which means decisions about the livestock and horses are my call."

She slowed to a stop, stunned by his audacity and his job title. "You're our new foreman? Since when?"

He stopped when she did and faced her. "Since Dylan Frick hired me."

"Dylan?" She cocked her head, suspicious. "Dylan moved out of town." To be precise, he'd entered Witness Security with his fiancée, but Slade didn't need to know that.

Slade gave her an impatient glance. "He made the arrangements before he left. I have an employment contract with his signature I can show you if you need proof. But later. Right now, that horse is my only concern."

He spun on his boot heel and continued up toward the stable.

Clamping her mouth in a line of frustration, Amanda ran to catch up again. "Foreman or not, I'm the one with the veterinary degree, and I'm in charge of medical issues with the animals." She panted for a breath, irritated to be winded from keeping pace with him. A white cloud formed in the frigid December air as she puffed out a deep breath. "That includes colic."

Slade reached the stable first and grabbed the large slide bolt that secured the alley doors. "A degree is no substitute for experience."

When he opened the heavy door, she scooted past him and sent him a smug grin. "Then it's a good thing I have plenty of experience, as well." Spotting Trevor and Gabby in the center alleyway walking Peanut in circles, she hustled toward them. She dug an elastic band out of her coat pocket and finger-combed her hair into a pony-tail. "How long has he been symptomatic?"

Relief eased the worry in Gabby's face when she saw Amanda had arrived. "He was acting edgy when I was in here after dinner, and I couldn't sleep, worrying about him. I got up a little while ago to check on him and found him like this." She waved a hand at the sorrel gelding, who tossed his head, fighting the lead clipped to his halter and kicking at his abdomen with a rear hoof.

"Have you taken all the water and feed out of his stall?"

"Yes," Gabby answered.

Amanda set her medical bag on a bale of hay and retrieved her stethoscope. When she turned around, Slade had taken the lead from Trevor and was stroking Peanut's neck. He leaned close to the horse and made a low soft noise meant to calm Peanut.

Amanda opened her mouth to tell Slade to butt out, but she caught herself and swallowed the words. She needed his cooperation in calming Peanut while she examined him more than she needed to win a battle of wills with the new foreman. She introduced Slade to Trevor and her sister and learned Trevor had already met the new foreman earlier that night.

Peanut pawed the ground restlessly, and Amanda sent Slade a hard look. "Keep him still. I need to listen for gut sounds."

Trevor and Gabby helped Slade calm the horse while she moved the stethoscope from one spot to another on Peanut's abdomen, checking for sounds of intestinal motility. "It's pretty quiet in there, but I do hear some movement, which is good."

"Can you give him something for the pain?" Gabby asked, her eyes full of tears. "I hate to see him suffer."

Amanda moved the stethoscope to listen to Peanut's lungs and heart. "I'll need to sedate him before I insert the naso-gastric tube. That and a dose of Buscopan to suppress the intestinal spasms will help him feel better." She returned to her medical bag and dug out the case where she kept a small selection of drugs for the most common emergencies. She prepared injections of both an appropriate sedative and the anti-spasmodic. Knowing she needed to perform a rectal exam, she gave her sister an errand to keep her busy. "Gabby, can you get me a pair of long gloves? I want to check for impaction." She caught Slade's raised eyebrow as she turned back to her patient and cocked her head. "Unless you want the honor of doing that exam."

He slid a pack of peppermint gum from his pocket and calmly stuck a piece in his mouth while he gave her a level look. "I will if you're too squeamish."

"Oh, brother," she grumbled under her breath. She refused to rise to his baiting. Now was not the time to lock horns with the new foreman.

Nickering testily, Peanut tried to lie down again, and Slade walked the horse forward a few steps, then crooned to him. "Easy, fella."

Gabriella returned with the long examination gloves. Taking them, Amanda sent her sister off on another errand, this time for the mineral oil and naso-gastric tube she'd need once Peanut responded to the sedative.

Feeling Slade's watchful gaze on her, Amanda removed her parka and snapped the long latex glove into place, covering her arm past her elbow.

Stepping to Peanut's hind end, Slade pulled the horse's tail up and held it out of her way.

She cut a side glance to him, prepared to thank him for his helpfulness, but the smug challenge in his eyes stopped her. Did he think she would balk? That the less pleasant aspects of veterinary care would stop her from doing what was best for an animal in need? Amanda gritted her back teeth. A rectal exam was not her favorite way to spend an evening, but she was no shrinking violet. She'd never shied from doing the dirty work involved in either large animal veterinary care or ranching.

She squared her shoulders and flipped her ponytail over her shoulder, silently accepting his challenge. The sooner the new foreman knew who he was dealing with the better.

great series
By paula legate
Books in series, is The Colton Ransom, Colton by blood, the missing Colton, The Colton bride, Tri[le Exposure, Colton Christmas Rescue.

This is a really good book, but you will feel lost if you read this book first. I missed reading a book or two in the series. I felt like I was missing key information, but was still able to enjoy this book.

Amanda made a wonderful heroine, and pulled me right into the story. This story did have a lot of characters, that only added to the story in a good way. Slade, what can I say? I love a hero that has scars, but learns how to let his heart love once again.
The suspense of this story was fantastic. It had twist that left me shocked. Amanda's baby was almost kidnapped a few times. She hired a body guard to protect her. Accidents happened on the ranch, but someone was covering up the truth. Slade was working undercover to find answers. He was a detective, posing as the new ranch foreman. He was dealing with grief of losing his wife, and baby. He didn't want to fall for Amanda or her baby. little baby Cheyenne melted his heart, and he vowed to protect her, and her mom. I love how protective he was. This book had a few emotional moments that choked me up. I didn't shed tears, but it was close. This was a great book. I was glad all the mystery's were solved by the end of the book.

Fantastic wrap up of the series
By S. Frank
Fantastic wrap up of the series. Everyone is on edge as the kidnapping attempts continue. Slade has been sent to work undercover to solve the mystery. He also wants to discover who was behind his father's murder ten years ago. He doesn't want to get involved with Amanda. Meanwhile, Amanda will do everything she can to protect her daughter. Slade's secretiveness worries her until she discovers who he is. Then she has to try to fight her attraction to him to concentrate on helping Slade solve the mystery.

I really liked both Amanda and Slade. As the oldest of the three Colton girls, she is the one everyone looks to while her father is ill. She is also a single mother and a veterinarian which adds more pressure to her. She is very independent and doesn't like to rely on anyone else for something she feels she can do. I loved the first meeting between her and Slade. He acted like she wasn't up to taking care of the sick horse and really treated her like a spoiled brat. I loved seeing her show him just what she could do and how he pretty much had to eat his words. There were definitely a lot of sparks between them from the beginning. Amanda also has trust issues because of her baby's father and she senses that Slade is hiding something. I liked the way they cleared that issue early on and promised to be honest with each other. I loved seeing them work together to solve the mystery. There were some great moments with Amanda making sure that Slade knew that she would be involved in every step. Her appearance at the airport was so much fun to read. Amanda also realized she was falling for Slade and had no idea if he would ever return her feelings because of his own past.

Slade was determined to solve the crimes and the mystery of his father's death. He's certain that the Coltons have been covering up the truth all these years. He initially views Amanda with a great deal of suspicion. When he saves her daughter from an attempted kidnapping he starts to realize that his suspicions were unfounded. I liked the way that he did tell her who he was and why he was there. His attraction to her bothered him because he doesn't want to have feelings for another woman and child. He hasn't recovered from the deaths of his wife and daughter and doesn't want anyone relying on him because he doesn't believe he's deserving of it. Being around the baby brings back his pain and he tries to stay away from her. I loved the way Amanda just stuck him with her and how Slade and Cheyenne ended up playing together. Besides showing Amanda what a nice guy he was underneath the grouchiness, it also started healing Slade's heart. Even though he was resisting it as hard as he could, Slade's feelings for her were just as strong.

As the concluding book in the series, everything got tied up very well. I suspect that pulling it all together while keeping it believable was not an easy task. There were some interesting twists. The Mastermind was who I suspected, but the reasons were a complete surprise. The person who kidnapped Cole was also a surprise, though we never got a reason, which I would have liked. The death of Slade's father was also explained. One of my favorite things was seeing Darla and crew get what was coming to them. I liked the final catch up on the couples, and loved the decisions made about inheritances. I loved this series and hope to see more Colton stories.

I hate giving bad reviews but the main female character was horrible. She was very headstrong and stubborn. She would not listen for her own good. She carried too much baggage from a previous relationship which created a problem for her. She was the typical female in these kinds of books. Headstrong, stubborn, unreasonable and refused to listen for her own good. She made unreasonable demands. When told she could not travel with Slade, she turns up at the airport on her own. Otherwise it had a good story line and a fast read.
