A romantic suspense just the way I like it!
By Dina
This was my 1st book by Nina Bruhns, and it was a very good one. As a romantic suspense, it had the right balance between romance and suspense, with some fast paced thrilling scenes as a bonus, just the way I like it.

While working undercover at a jewelry boutique in Paris, SIS (British Secret Intelligence Service aka MI6) agent Marina Bond - no James Bond jokes, please - overhears a phone conversation about some kind of threat against the Lazlo Group, one of the most elite private investigation agencies in the world. Corbett Lazlo, the head of the Lazlo Group, is a friend of her father and saved her life once, so she feels obligated to return the "favor" and warn him about what she's heard. So she sets up a secret meeting with him in a seedy hotel in the Monmartre district so she can give him the heads-up. But it isn't Lazlo who shows up at her hotel room door...

DeWitt von Kreus is one of Lazlo's agents and was sent to the meeting in his boss' place because the man himself couldn't make it. But Marina has been in the spy business for too long to trust Witt blindly and, out of the blue, invokes the so-called "Denmark protocol", an old-school safety measure that requires Witt to strip naked to prove he's not wired. Obviously, Witt invokes the protocol in return. Uh-oh. Marina isn't shy and has nothing to hide, and neither does Witt. So strip naked they do... and the attraction between them is explosive and unmistakable.

Marina takes a deep breath - after all, she's a professional - and manages to control her libido long enough to give Witt the info she's gathered, all the while intending to leave as soon as possible before she gives in to temptation and jumps his bones. But he has other plans, and when she tries to leave the hotel room, they end up having wild, hot sex against the door. Wow, that was fast! ;) Witt wants to see her again but Marina doesn't do casual sex - what happened in the hotel room was just a fluke - and knows he isn't up to a long-term relationship, so she's ready to dismiss him the moment they step out of the hotel and get back to their separate jobs.

But then someone starts shooting at them, and Witt decides to stick to Marina like glue until they find out what's happening. Who's the shooter after, Witt or Marina? Is the attack related to the threats against the Lazlo Group? Or has it something to do with the undercover operation Marina's working at the moment? While they work together to try and solve these mysteries, the initial attraction between Witt and Marina grows and they soon find themselves falling in love.

This was a very entertaining and edgy read, full of action from beginning to end. Bullets started flying in the 1st Chapter and only stopped in the last. Witt was one very sexy hero, marriage-shy due to a traumatic event that happened when he was only a teenager growing up in South Africa, and he had more than a professional interest in bringing down the Angolan broker who worked for several African terrorist groups, trafficking illegal conflict diamonds in exchange for firearms. Marina didn't have a "tortured" past but she loved her job and, based on her parents' experience, she didn't think it would be possible to have a lasting relationship with anyone and keep her job at the same time. Witt and Marina had some rough spots along the way - he really had to work on his protective instinct and accept the fact that she was a competent agent and could take care of herself - but they were good to and with each other.

As mentioned before, this book had an "instant coupling" scenario. It takes a good writer to make me buy that, and I'm happy to say Ms. Bruhns made it work for me. She built the sexual tension in those 1st pages in a very believable way, so when Witt and Marina acted on their attraction so fast and furious, it was hot instead of icky. Plus, Ms. Bruhns didn't have Witt and Marina thinking they were in love with each other immediately after "the deed", so kudos to her.

The ending was a bit frustrating because not all the mysteries were solved. I should have expected that considering this book is part of a miniseries, but I only found that out after I finished it and was left hanging in the air. Anyway, I'm not holding it against the book, since that's how it was supposed to be. All in all, I really enjoyed reading this book.

Note: Top Secret Bride is the 3rd installment in the multi-author miniseries Mission: Impassioned. I didn't know that beforehand, or I would have tried to find and read the previous books before reading this one. Anyway, I didn't feel lost in the story, so it's fair to say you don't have to read this series in order - except for the last one, I'm guessing. As a rule, I'm not a big fan of multi-author series because the stories can be a bit uneven and I don't necessarily like the writing style of all the authors engaged in the series, but I'll have to find and read the last book, Lazlo's Last Stand (Silhouette Intimate Moments) by Kathleen Creighton, if I want to know who the master villain of the overall story arc is. Oh well, I might as well try and find all the other books in the series since I enjoyed this one so much...

From Booklist
Hot on the trail of a thief, Zheng Hao Han has no time for pretty dancing girls. In this particular case, however, Han is willing to make an exception, since he believes the jade thief he seeks and Wen Li Feng, the lovely sword dancer who has captivated a crowd of villagers, are one and the same. Acting on his professional instincts, Han captures Li Feng only to have her escape. The jade pendant Li Feng owns is the only clue she has to the mother she lost 15 years earlier. Finding out what happened to her mother is the most important thing in the world to Li Feng, and no one, including infamous thief-catcher Han, is going to stop her. The graceful, almost poetic quality of Lin’s writing perfectly complements the Tang Dynasty setting of her latest expertly crafted historical romance, and the book’s potent combination of compelling characters and exotic historical setting make The Sword Dancer an auto-buy for libraries in search of something different for their romance collections. --John Charles

From the Author
Dear Reader,
I've always found it sexy when a hero and heroine can not only match wits, but also match swords.

A common theme in the Chinese adventure stories is the idea of the vigilante hero, a hero guided by honor and chivalry. But how much fun would it be to have the heroine in that role? And the hero would be, of course, the thief-catcher intent on capturing her.

Often people ask me, where do I get my ideas? For this book, the origin was a famous poem by the poet Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty titled, "Observing the Sword Dance of a Disciple of Madam Gongsun." The poem starts with the description of a mesmerizing sword dance, then moves into a nostalgic look at how much has changed in fifty years like "the turn of a page". The sword dance ultimately becomes a symbol of the end of a golden age.

A final historical note: Wudang Mountain which is mentioned in the book is an actual location. In the Tang Dynasty, the mountain was already established as a center of Taoism. A Taoist master, Lu Dong Bin, known as the Sword Immortal, was also a famous figure of the Tang Dynasty. With these elements in mind, I took the liberty of associating my heroine's sword training as well as her Taoist upbringing with Wudang.

I hope you enjoy the adventures of my sword dancer and thief-catcher as they chase their way across the cities and rivers of Tang Dynasty China. There's no better place to fight and fall in love, in my humble opinion.

Historical Romance That Offers Action, Intrigue, and Forbidden Romance all in one
By Sophia Rose
When I get the opportunity to read historical romance with a setting that is not the typical, I am always intrigued. China is a magical place with scope for a good, hearty story. I have read one other book by this author in the same historical time period and it was a wonderful blend of history, adventure and romance so I was eager to give this one a try.

The story begins when a thief-taker, Han, pursues his hunch that the thieves to a shipment of jade are traveling with a performing troupe. He is mesmerized when the beautiful sword dancer does her routine not just with grace, but expertise showing she is familiar with wielding the sword as a weapon. At the end of her performance, a group of impatient bounty hunters rush in to take captive the troupe. The sword dancer runs and he goes with his gut feeling and pursues her. Han is led on a merry chase that takes him through, around, over and under the small village until he catches her when another thief-taker blocks her path. He is awed by the grace and athleticism that allows her to scale walls, balance on roofs and dart through the narrow alleys like her dance. During the pursuit, she surprised him by not letting him fall off a roof when she could have used it as the opportunity to get far away. This begins his suspicion that she is no ordinary thief.

Li Feng can't believe her luck when the best thief-taker in the province captures her and brings her to a holding cell with plans to take her back to the magistrate for the jade theft- a theft that she participated in as an act to weaken the warlord it was destined for and not an act out of greed. She knew it was a mistake to get caught up in that cause when she had her own personal quest going on. With little effort, she escapes the jail and continues her pursuit to find her mother who was taken from her leaving her an orphan. Her only clue is the piece of jade her mother gave her before disappearing with a pack of armed men.

Han has never trailed someone who roused his curiosity as much as Li Feng. She acts like no normal thief or criminal he has seen. She doesn't show a hint that she was guilty of a crime- no trying to get rid of her loot, no greedy behavior, just a trail of visits to jade sellers and craftsman. He captures her again and she escapes him again. Each time, he learns a little more about his fugitive. She is trained in the warrior arts and she pursues her own quest. He used to think justice is justice- black and white, but now he begins to wonder. Li Feng is not without honor even it if is not the same as his own. Bigger things are afoot involving powerful figures in the shadows who orchestrated the event of the theft and signs of corruption that are going on. He doesn't want the small fish; he wants to bring down the whole rotten group and the sword dancer is his only lead.

Li Feng grows accustomed to the tenacious thief-taker finding her and eventually they strike a truce to start working together. She knows eventually she must get away from him because they are fundamentally different, but in the meantime she allows the attraction between them knowing it will tear out a piece of her heart when they part. Toward the end, the trail of clues leads her to unexpected truths that make her choices all the more difficult though duty to family allows for there to only be one real choice in the end. The same can be said for Han because his principles lead him to the point where he must choose justice or Li Feng now that he knows her secrets.

The plot was riveting from the first page. I loved the action sequences of Li Feng's flight to escape and Han's pursuit to capture. The mystery of the past that Li Feng cannot remember, but pieces together as she pursues one clue after another was full of intrigue and then the constant feeling of danger from people in the present worked well against the quiet moments when Li Feng and Han start up a rather unique love affair. Both characters are well aware that the feelings they have can lead to nowhere since their lives and actions have placed them on opposite sides of the law. I think that made their stolen moments of tenderness and togetherness all the more richer. They dance around each other for a while, but finally give in to their mutual passion. These two were so perfect for each other and together so I was vested to find out how the author would pull off a happily ever after for them with one being a criminal and one set to uphold the law. As the book pushed forward, it got even more and more hopeless, but that's what kept me reading.

Backdrop was descriptive and felt authentic. Social norms, clothing, class system, description of the scenes were all well done, but they were baked into the story in such a way that it was just there running along with the plot and not taking it over.

This was such a satisfying read and I recommend it to those who enjoy historical romance with some spice, some taunt action and an exotic setting.

Flying through the air with life!
By Judith Peterson
The Sword Dancer is written with grace and beauty. No other author has the keen ability to make words works of art. I commend Jeannie for her skill and thank her for sharing her skill with the world.

The Sword Dancer is a book that is fun and keeps you interested until the last page. Treat yourself to this book. You deserve it. You truly do.

If you have not read "Butterfly Swords", "The Dragon and the Pearl", and "My Fair Concubine", do yourself a favor and pick up a copy of each today.

As I stated previously, no author writes as if it was an old masterpiece. Jeannie Lin's work are works of art. True art that should be savored and enjoyed and shared.

It's time for you to savor and enjoy.

Batman Versus Catwoman
By FredTownWard
If you've never tried one of Jeannie Lin's Tang Dynasty China historical romances (and if you haven't, boy, are you missing out!), you are in luck because this standalone novel is arguably one of her two most accessible to readers unfamiliar with Chinese culture and history, the other being My Fair Concubine whose basic premise greatly resembles that of My Fair Lady. The premise of The Sword Dancer on the other hand resembles one seen with some frequency in comic books (and their TV and movie adaptations) about costumed vigilantes and the costumed villains they fight: a hero and a villain being attracted to each other despite operating on opposite sides of the law. The most famous of these relationships (and the most long lived, not to mention the most convoluted) is that between Batman and Catwoman, which dates to 1940.

Sword Dancer Li Feng is a good deal more than just that. First of all, she has been raised/trained by a master swordsman and has adopted sword dancing mostly as a disguise and as a way to earn a living while she pursues her real goal. Second, without really thinking it through, she managed to let herself get involved in a revolution and a heist that has attracted the law's unwelcome attention to her. But her real goal is to find out what happened to her mother during a tragedy half remembered as a very small child, why it happened, and just exactly who she really is.

Among professional thief catchers (bounty hunters) Zheng Hao Han is something of an anomaly and not merely because he is very good at it. As the eldest son of a disgraced former magistrate, he once studied the law in order to follow in his father's footsteps, but now he follows a darker path in his quest for justice.

Funny thing is that they are BOTH seeking to uncover truths and right wrongs, but their methods are utterly incompatible...

so it is just too bad that they are so darn attracted to each other. As Thirst for Revenge leads Unrelenting Pursuit a merry chase, accommodations are reached in order to seek the truth together and spend SOME time with one another, but any future together is impossible, right?

Then again this is a Jeannie Lin novel where the impossible CAN happen,...

but only after Ms. Lin has first rendered it as utterly and completely impossible as she can without sabotaging her thread-the-multiple-needles ending.

Note: I entered a contest where we were given the title and the basic premise and asked to guess what the cover illustration would look like. My guess was "the heroine... dancing... with a sword...."

For some odd reason I didn't win.

Note: For full disclosure I received this book from the author in return for agreeing to review it.

Plot problems
By M. Palmer
Without a Trace
Book 3

This story focuses on two new characters. Jodie Gilmore is a young female FBI agent who has been called to help on the investigation of missing person/murders.But the moment she gets there, the FBI is called to investigate two skeletal remains that were found. They are suspected to have died 25 years ago. The story goes deeper than that, but I'll leave it for you to discover the deeper secret.

The romance was interesting. These two had a lot of trouble getting the feelings going, but the romance eventually took off.

The interesting thing in this book is how amazingly flopped it was. At the end of Book 2, Sam and Jocelyn were married. Inf fact at their reception, Sam was called away to investigate the bloody shoe. So no time apparently lapsed between book 2 and book 3. In this book, Sam and Jocelyn are engaged - not married. Not only that, but it seems they discussed moving to New Orleans when in the first book, Sam said he'd live there with Jocelyn. By the next book, they are back to living there...

I'm confused...

These mistakes cost the book a star. I'm not sure who is to blame for the problems, but that did distract me from the book. The suspense in this book was very good, though, so I still gave it four stars. Oh, and as far as the "who done it and why?" I had it figured out pretty quickly, though I thought it was too easy - well, it was true!

interesting, but not all mysteries solved
By Paul Skinner
I picked up this book after my wife read it, and for the most part, was very satisfied with a mystery that wasn't peppered with profanity and unsavory characters. But what this book lacked was an explanation at the end for all the unusual activities that occcured. Perhaps since this is part of a series (albeit from other authors) some mysteries are explained in later books? Anyway, my only other comment is the romantic nature of the book was a bit awkward, with our heroine jumping in a bit fast with her heart in my opinion. So maybe it wasn't totally realistic. But I enjoyed the trip to Louisiana.

I enjoy reading books that are on-going stories
By Amazon Customer
I enjoy reading books that are on-going stories, revisiting with the previous characters. I enjoy Shirley McCoy's writing, she is one of my favorite authors. I can't get over the fact that Sam and Jocelyn were married at the end of book two, and she has them only being engaged in book three. Bugs me! Probably would have given it five star's other wise.

This was a perfect ending to the mysteries of the Blanchard family.
By KayLovesToRead
Where Truth Lies by Lynn Bullock
Love Inspired Suspense #56 ~ June 2007
The Secrets of Stoneley - Book 6 of 6

Under tremendous strain from all the turmoil that has found her family, Miranda Blanchard's panic attacks have worsened. It scares her when she thinks she hears her mother singing, when she knows it's impossible. Her fear is that she's losing her mind like they said her mother had. So she digs deep for the courage to return to the mental health support group sponsored by her Church. Leading the group is the new pastor, Reverend Greg Brown; they'd met the week before at a wedding. Greg wonders about the haunting and lovely Miranda. And as they begin to get to know each other, Miranda leans on Greg and draws on his strength. The tension in Blanchard Manor reaches its peak, with more clues that Miranda's mother is truly alive and with increased threats on the family. And as the mysteries become answered, Greg is left wondering if Miranda will still need him.

This was a perfect ending to the mysteries of the Blanchard family, tying up all the loose ends from the previous books. This one too was a perfect balance of the two plot lines; the series plot of the mystery of Trudy and the growing relationship between Greg and Miranda. I enjoyed watching Miranda find her inner strength through Greg's support. The two complete each other nicely. It's almost a shame to say goodbye to this family; the Blanchards have been a dynamic group. I'm satisfied with the resolution of the ongoing mystery and I'm very pleased with Miranda and Greg's HEA. The epilogue was a lovely way to show how all the romances had turned out.

Great Series
By Rose
I read all of this series. It keeps you on your toes and keeps you guessing on who the woman is that is doing all the murders and damage. You also want to keep reading this book to find out where the mother is. Had an unexpected turn at the end, it was awsome.

Sadly the End of the Series
By JC Ellis
This Stonely Series of stories has provided many hours of entertainment. I've read them out of order for the most part, and that's my only regret. I'm glad that I didn't misplace the final story. The series had me wondering about the villain for a long time. I won't spoil the ending, except to say that it's very satisfying. I will miss the family. The series reminder that God works all things for our good because we love Him and are called according to His purpose - and His perfect timing encourages me to remember that in my own prayers.

London, 1822

Max Arrington, the Duke of Pelham, vows to never again let a handsome face blind him to a man's true intentions. But ten months of celibacy and lonely nights drive him to a decadent brothel, where a beautiful young man arouses his illicit passions as never before.

Tristan Walsh has grown tired of being used for men's pleasure. But his latest client is different: commanding yet generous, Max makes him feel cared for as well as wanted. Yet Tristan knows he'll never have the choice to leave the brothel and submit only to Max.

So when Max invites him to be his guest at his country estate, Tristan eagerly agrees to his terms—days to do as he pleases while Max tends to the dukedom, and nights spent together in wicked play. But when the "business arrangement" begins to deepen into something more, Tristan must face the fact that he has no true place in Max's life—or in Max's guarded heart…

Best romance I've read in a while
By Cbtravers
I love historical romances, but haven't been able to find one I've really enjoyed in a long time. The main characters were believable and flawed but still likable. There was just the right amount of angst for me and although the plot escalated quickly I loved the characters relationship progression and their conflict.

Lackluster Storyline
By ChinaBlue
I have read 10 books by Ava March (including this one) and I found "All In with the Duke" to be amazingly lackluster in terms of story content especially when compared to her previous works. Reading the Kindle version, it was around 47% when I began to wonder when, or if, this story was going to progress further than just a mutual sexual attraction for each other. At this point, the prologue piqued my interest more than the ensuing tale. I had difficulty accepting that either character fell "in love" with the other considering the fact that when they were not in bed, for the most part, they spent little to no time together getting to know each other; indeed, Max, the Duke, spent all day working on estate matters in his study as well as many evening hours there, only joining up with Tristan for a nightly romp in bed. This is a foundation for love?

Their separation seemed fabricated - a reason to provide the necessary angst required in romance books but, unfortunately, it was a little too late and a little too bland, for me to buy into it.

Had this been my first Ava March book, I am rather sure I would not buy another one but, having enjoyed most of her previous books, I will, in all probability, buy her next one - and see where that one goes.

A 2.5 star rating rounded up to 3 stars.

I'm all in with the Duke too!
By Jessantonia
I was very anxious to read this story and pre ordered the minute I found out Ava March had another release soon and I think I've read all her m/m works so when I received it on my kindle tonight, I immediately read it n did not put it down until I finished a few minutes ago! Most of the story I enjoyed. Max and Tristan were so wonderful together and I particularly loved Max protectiveness over Tristan, sigh! I do think Max was a bit too young and acted older than 23 and though it's explained, I still think he should have been older. Anyway the reason I knocked a star is the last 2/3 chapters were a disappointment. I do not like it when the only things keeping the heroes apart is oneself (a pattern seen in a lot of her works unfortunately). Tristan put up too much resistant for too long and not to mention, I'm not a fan of contradictory behavior. Overall though, an enjoyable read. On a side note, I hope Rawlings gets his own story!

One of the best romantic suspense books you can find
By Reviewer Aus
Kaylea Cross is one of the best romantic suspense writers I've ever read. With her detailed military knowledge, strong yet feminine heroines and realistic alpha heroes, I know that when I pick up one of her books I'm not going to put it down until I've finished.

Pararescueman Cameron Munro was in love with helicopter pilot Devon Crawford back when she was dating his best friend. That relationship didn't last, and then the friend was killed in battle. Though Cam and Devon want to be together now, their professional positions mean it's not something they are allowed to do.
Then Devon is shot down and a trap is set for Cam to go and rescue her.

This is military romance as it should be. Characters behave like professionals and act like adults. A romance between Devon and Cam is going to be a serious issue, and their desperation to get around the rules believable. The atmosphere on the base is realistic and almost addictive, with the camaraderie between characters coming to life off the pages.

As amazing as this author is with creating the scene, she is equally as good at writing the romance. You ache for the characters and feel every emotion along with them. Often romantic suspense is too heavy on either the action or the romance, but this book's balance is perfect. The two aspects of the story are seamlessly tied together.

If you're a fan of authors like Suzanne Brockmann and Cindy Gerard, you'll love Deadly Descent.

Is my love for you worth breaking every rule?
By Mary Gramlich
Captain Devon "Spike" Crawford is Blackhawk pilot counted on to do her job and make the right call at the right time. She is steady under pressure and can handle decisions with a clear train of thought. However, when someone she cared about was not recovered on her watch the guilt she bore was weighing her down. What Devon also understood was the very clear, concise rules of non-engagement with those ranked below you.

Time and hard word back in Afghanistan have Devon trying to concentrate on work and not US Air Force Technical Sergeant Cam Munro, her late boyfriend's best friend. Cam is a Paraescueman who performs an elite function on the battlefront and truly is a woman's dream walking around on two legs. Cam wants in her life, every inch of her personal space, and he has expressed sincere feelings for her. Devon, the woman under control, comes completely unhinged when he is around and wonders is it the rule of not fraternizing with rank and file or a fear of commitment. Devon has as much trouble being with him as she is scared of losing his love. They are both in high stress combat positions and Devon does not think she can go through the loss again but being with him in the same room and not putting her hands on him is more control than she can muster.

While Devon and Cam fight the warlords, rebels, and suicide bombers in Afghanistan day in and day out but knowing that they are together at the same airfield causes as many sleepless nights as it does dream filled days. No one could imagine the horror of one man's vengeance against the military that would rock both Devon and Cam to the core and shake up everything they thought they knew about each other and how to function under pressure. It was their destiny to fight their way home, ignore the rules, and not let what people think shape the way they lived any more.

I have been a fan of Kaylea Cross since the first book I read of hers. She is able to take technical, detailed military information and scenarios and write them so that you know the characters, where they are, and what they are doing. That is a gift in a writer because while the military is an efficient machine it is also a complicated one and not readily understood, especially in a book. This story shares the grief of loss as well as the love in recovery, and how we all face down our demons.

Held My Breath Until the End
By Wkonsunshine
3.5 stars. This is an action-packed ride from the get go. It reads like a novella. The scenes are mostly contained and it take place over a very short period of time. It's concentrated. The characters are likeable and the battle scenes are really well written and the romance is hot. Enjoy for yourself!

Alyssa Roth pulled the hood of her sweatshirt up to cover her newly cropped blond hair as she cautiously approached her town house. She couldn't imagine why her twin sister might have come to her place, but she'd searched all Mallory's usual spots over the past few hours, without success. She'd called and left messages at Mallory's condo and on her cell. She was feeling desperate. She had to find her twin and warn her of the danger.

The hour was close to midnight, so there weren't many people out and about, but that didn't stop her from casting a worried glance over her shoulder. She'd taken a bus from a park-and-ride close to the motel and walked the rest of the way. Using her key, she opened the door and quickly crossed the threshold, locking the door behind her.

The interior was dark so if Mallory was there, she must be sleeping. She pulled a small penlight out of her pocket, unwilling to risk the overhead lights that would effectively broadcast her presence to anyone who might be watching.

Holding the light low at her side, she walked through the kitchen into the living room. She caught an unexpected flash of glitter, and relief washed over her as she realized Mallory's hair clip was on the table beside the sofa.

"Mallory," she whispered loudly as she headed down the hall toward her bedroom. "Wake up. You can't stay here! I'm in danger. I'm being followed and believe it or not, a cop actually tried to kill me!"

There was no response, and when she pushed open the door to her bedroom, her burst of hope faded when she saw the bed was empty. She took two steps into the room before she noticed the dark puddle staining the floor. She stared at it, slowly realizing it was blood.

Too much blood.

Dread sucked the oxygen from her lungs and she stumbled backward, hitting the door frame hard in her effort to get away. What had happened here? Every instinct she possessed screamed at her to run, but she forced herself to stay long enough to sweep her light over the room, half-afraid she'd find Mallory's body. She even went as far as to check the closet and under the bed. Nothing. The only item out of place was a bright yellow blouse, lying crumpled in the far corner, darkly stained with blood.

The hair clip and yellow blouse proved Mallory had been here recently. Alyssa swayed. Nausea threatened to erupt from her stomach in a violent heave. As a nurse, she knew there was too much blood to believe Mallory had escaped unscathed. She stared at the yellow blouse, a sinking realization making her knees weak.

The blouse wasn't Mallory's. It was the blouse she'd bought for herself last week. Her blouse. Her town house. Both full of blood.

She sagged against the door for support as her mind whirled with possibilities. The night before, Councilman Schaefer had gripped her hand and whispered that he'd been stabbed by a hired thug working for Hugh Jefferson. Stunned, she'd gone straight to the authorities, but Officer Crane had brushed aside her concern.

She thought his response was odd, but one minute they were preparing Schaefer for surgery, the next he was dead. Later that night, after her shift at the hospital, a dark blue van tried to run her car off the road and she'd caught a glimpse of Officer Crane's ruddy face before she managed to avoid the crash.

Fearing for her life, she hadn't gone home. She'd checked into a run-down motel and spent the next twelve hours changing her appearance so she looked like Mallory, buying tight clothing and a gaudy purse. She went to the DMV for a new ID and obtained a fake tattoo above her collarbone to match her twin's.

Now she realized her efforts were in vain. She couldn't tear her gaze from the yellow blouse, feeling sick as she realized what must have transpired. Mallory probably had another fight with her ex and had come here to find Alyssa for support. Only, Crane or Jefferson must have been watching her town house and killed Mallory by mistake.

Alyssa was the one who knew how Jefferson had killed Schaefer. She was the one Crane had tried to run off the road. She was the one they wanted to silence.

Not Mallory.

Her fault. Her stomach twisted and she shoved a fist in her mouth to silence the scream building in her chest. This was all her fault. Mallory was the only family she had left in the world. And now her twin was gone. Likely dead. Brutally murdered.

Bands of self-reproach tightened around her throat, squeezing tight. Sheer desperation had forced her to break her cardinal rule by borrowing Mallory's identity. But she shouldn't have rested until she found a way to warn Mallory. Now it was too late.

Dear Lord, forgive me. Please forgive me!

A shrill whine of police sirens split the night air. Guilt surrendered to fear. She didn't know who had called the police, possibly a neighbor. Had they heard Mallory's scream? She didn't want to think about how her twin must have struggled, fighting for her life. With an effort, she focused on the present. She had to get out of there. Now. She couldn't trust anyone. Especially not the police.

Run! Run! One last glance over her shoulder at the blood-stained blouse ripped her heart in two. She didn't want to leave. But nothing good would come of staying here. She imagined if Mallory was here, her sister would be shouting at her to run. Don't let them find you, Alyssa. Go! Run!

Tears streamed down her face, blurring her vision. Galvanized by self-preservation, Alyssa clicked off the penlight and ran down the hall, through the open kitchen and living area, pausing only long enough to snatch the glittery hair clip from the table, stuffing it in her purse as she headed to the front door. Her hand clutched the doorknob. She paused, her heart thundering in her chest. The sirens grew louder. Closer. Too close. The back door?

Spinning on her heel, she retraced her steps, crossing the room toward the kitchen door. She stumbled against the table, unable to see. She swiped at her tears, finally finding the door. Sirens continued to echo outside. Did the police know she was here? Was Officer Crane right now trying to find her?

She left the town house, sprinting into the darkness. The windows in her neighbor's houses were dark—no one was up this late. So who'd called the police? Frantic, she stopped between buildings, trying to think. Indecision held her captive. Finally she ran to the right, through the darkness of her neighbor's backyard.

She ran as fast as she dared. Her heart thundered in her ears. Panic swelled, choking her. The need to move quietly battled a savage desperation to put as much distance between her and the bloody town house as possible.

Don't stop. Don't let them find you. Run!

Where should she go? What should she do? Whom should she trust?

Gage. She needed to find Gage. Her ex-fiance hadn't believed her when she'd claimed Hugh Jefferson was dangerous. She didn't know why Jefferson had killed Schaefer, but she was convinced everything was related to the hotly contested condos Gage had been hired to build. After Schaefer's claims, she'd called Gage, warned him to stay away from Hugh Jefferson but he'd waved off her concerns. Surely Gage would believe her now. Besides, whom else could she trust?

No one. Only Gage.

She'd broken off their engagement because of Gage's lackluster faith and his overprotective ways. But right now, she longed for his protection, to feel the strength of his arms around her. To bury her face in the safe haven of his chest.

Her breath scissored from her lungs as she ran through alley after alley, backyard after backyard. Shadows in the normally innocuous Milwaukee suburb loomed ominously. She ducked beneath a low-hanging tree branch, its green leaves rustling in the summer night. The sirens went abruptly and eerily silent. Had they arrived at her town house? Did they discover they'd killed the wrong twin? Identical twins didn't have the same fingerprints, so it wouldn't be long before they discovered the truth. Were they out searching for her now? She was too scared to turn around and look.

Dear Lord, help me! Guide me! Keep me safe!

Her breath burned in her chest, threatening to give out for good. She ran for what seemed like forever, but what was probably only thirty to forty minutes. She was in a neighborhood she didn't recognize, but she was too afraid to slow down. The ground beneath her feet abruptly sloped downward. She missed a step. Her ankle twisted sharply under her weight. Pain knifed up her leg. She gasped and fell hard.

The world somersaulted as she rolled down the steep hill, momentum carrying her faster and faster until she smacked bottom. Her skull met the concrete sidewalk with a hard crack. Fireworks of pain exploded in her head.

A velvet shroud of darkness surrounded her.

"Alyssa? Are you there? Pick up the phone!" Gage Drummond scowled as he paused, then added in a calmer tone, "Alyssa, please, please call me as soon as you get this message." He flipped the phone shut, hating the feeling of helplessness.

Where was she? The hospital had called him to pick up Mallory because they couldn't reach Alyssa. One of Alyssa's coworkers had assumed he and Alyssa were still engaged and instead of correcting her, he'd agreed to come and get Mallory, hoping to get back into Alyssa's good graces.

Unfortunately, his good deed backfired, because he couldn't get in touch with Alyssa, either. He slipped his phone into his pocket and propped one shoulder against the dingy waiting room wall of Trinity Medical Center's emergency department.

Exhaustion weighed his eyelids. He considered borrowing a cup of the E.D.'s special coma coffee reserved for the graveyard shift. Strong enough to bring you out of a coma, or so Alyssa had claimed.

The memory hurt. He dug his thumbs into his eye sockets in an attempt to ease the pain. Bitter failure coated his tongue. He knew it was his fau...

IDENTITY CRISIS is a fascinating tale of mistaken identity, lost memories, and love reunion, all amidst grave danger.

Mallory Roth is in desperate need for her lost memory to return, as well as to find her missing twin sister Alyssa. Alyssa's former fiance Gage Drummond is as eager to find her as Mallory is. IDENTITY CRISIS is a great story where amnesia and reunion are given a new twist and suspense keeps you turning pages until the last one.

Identity Crisis
By M. G. Johnson
Be sure to pick "Identity Crisis" for your reading pleasure. The suspense continues on. Hope you'll enjoy this as much as I did. I have a Kindle and when I see the E-book, 20 seconds and I am reading my book. I don't have to leave my house and when you are in your 70s, sometimes you don't want to go out [heat/cold/bad weather].

Very good!
By M. Palmer
There are three books in this unnamed series:

Identity Crisis
Twin Peril
Undercover Cowboy

This is the first book I read in this series, thank goodness. You need to read the first book - it leaves you hanging in the end on several issues. The second book is where we'll get our answers on the sister.

This book was good. There was plenty of suspense and romantic tension as Gage tries to find out the answers - like is this the woman he loves or her twin sister? The answer is obvious to us, but not totally cleared up until the mid-way point. Then you just hope they work out their differences.

Can't wait to read the second!
