Will History Repeat Itself? Hollywood, 1953 Anita Brooks and Price Garfield were all the rage, perfect partners on and off the dance floor-until Price married an ambitious starlet and Anita fled to Broadway. Los Angeles, 2011 Anita's daughter, Gabrielle Brooks Lacroix, is lured to California to dance at the opening of a nostalgia club, Cheek to Cheek. The problem is her partner will be Kit Garfield, whose very name conjures up memories of her mother's heartbreak. Kit, however, has heard another version of the story-his father's. Can Gabby and Kit put aside yesterday's ghosts and follow their own dreams into the glittering future that beckons?

New York, Present Day

Gabrielle Brooks Lacroix reached the half–open doorway in her mother's second–floor apartment just in time to catch the final clinch of the "Dance of Love" scene in White Tie and Tails. As she watched her mother's youthful monochrome image lovingly embrace that of Price Garfield, Anita herself looked on raptly from the peach–colored couch in front of the television.

"Life was meant to be a dance of love…"

Gabby instantly recognized the theme song from the famous nostalgia musical set in the thirties. After teaching three classes in a row, she'd left her first–floor Broadway Bound Dance School to relax in her own apartment upstairs. Even though she was pooped, Gabby couldn't ignore the fact that her mother was viewing her old movies again.

Opening the door wide, she asked loudly, "Feeling nostalgic today?"

Anita started and glanced over her shoulder. "Oh…hello, sweetheart." She immediately clicked the remote control, shutting off both the television and the DVD player. Then she smoothed back her white hair, as if she were trying to wipe away her guilty expression. "I didn't notice you standing there."

"I wasn't. I just heard the music and decided to see what you were up to."

Gabby wouldn't really care about her mother watching the old movies if Anita could do so unemotionally. Maybe, by now, that was possible. It had been quite a while since Anita had dug one of them out.

Her mother looked over Gabby's new lavender leotard and matching wrap skirt. "You look good in that color. You ought to wear it more often." She motioned to the overstuffed chair across from her. "Sit down and tell me how your classes are going."

Not particularly in the mood to discuss her work, Gabby skirted the couch to plop down in the chair. "The classes are fine. What have you been doing this afternoon?" she asked pointedly. Since Anita only coached a few special students herself, the older woman had plenty of time to indulge in past triumphs and troubles.

"Oh, a little of this and that," Anita hedged before changing the subject. "Did Heather get that part she tried out for?"

"Nope."

"Too bad."

Gabby sighed. "None of our students has gotten a job lately."

"Kirk's still dancing in that off–off–Broadway horror musical."

"If you can call doing the limbo as a zombie dancing."

"Ah, well, that's not the worst job in the world," Anita insisted. "Broadway candidates have to pay their dues."

In hopes of getting somewhere, Gabby thought, though many never did, including herself. She'd been fed up with the constant rat race by the time she'd retired last year. At thirty–three she'd been a little long in the tooth for Broadway chorus lines, anyway. She stretched out her legs, glancing down at her tights and kidskin dance slippers, eternal reminders of what might have been.

"If you want to go somewhere, I can get Jane to take my tap class this evening," Gabby offered, thinking she could use some extra time away from the school.

"I don't want to go anywhere. Can't we just sit here and share some small talk?" Anita asked sweetly. "I'm always interested in the business."

Certainly not because of the income, Gabby knew. When her father died of a heart attack two years before, he'd left his wife with enough investments to retire on and still continue to live comfortably in the Greenwich Village building they'd bought years ago.

"The school's in the black and everyone's doing a fine job," Gabby said. Her mother had given over the management of the business to her youngest child when Gabby had agreed to work with her. "I'm satisfied." She glanced at the television, thinking about the topic the older woman had cleverly avoided discussing. "How come you're watching your old movies, anyway? You know how they get to you."

Anita smiled reassuringly at the child she'd always been closest to. "You don't have to worry. I wasn't sitting here mooning over the past."

"Are you sure?"

"Absolutely."

Gabby remained suspicious. At seventy–five her mother was in excellent physical and mental health but still capable of becoming distressed over Brooks/Garfield movies. The first time Gabby had caught her mother viewing her personal copy of White Tie and Tails—with a VCR in pre–DVD days—Anita had been weeping openly. Ten–year–old, em–pathetic Gabby had been very upset and had needed to be comforted and urged to keep the secret from her absent father.

"I just wish you'd quit carrying a torch for that jerk Price Garfield, Mom."

Gabby was still resentful of the man who'd ruined her mother's life in more ways than one. Undoubtedly aware that he'd been second best, that his wife would never love him as much as he loved her, Robert Lacroix had immersed himself in his surgery practice ever since Gabby could remember. He'd been an uninvolved, distant father.

"I know Price for what he is," Anita said, sounding exceptionally calm.

Gabby was surprised. Her mother's faded blue eyes seemed brighter, as if, for once, she was more excited than sad after viewing the old film.

"Besides, Price wasn't dancing alone in those movies. I also enjoy watching myself," Anita went on. "After all, I don't have any film clips from my Broadway musicals." She laughed shortly. "Not that the critics would think that was footage worth saving."

"The Broadway critics were blind." Gabby was certain her mother's career had floundered merely because of bad luck precipitated by the split with Price Garfield. Anita had been the victim of lackluster scripts, forgettable songs and poor timing. "You were always a wonderful performer. You just didn't click with the right material." Something that had also happened to her the few times she'd won small roles, she reflected.

Anita rose to give Gabby a hug. "Have I told you lately you're a beautiful, wonderful daughter?"

"Not for a while."

"Well, you are. And you're a fabulous dancer to boot. Never forget that." Anita patted her daughter on the back before moving away. "A professional needs a healthy ego."

"Thanks, Mom. My ego can always use some strokes."

Gabby almost said she only wished she were still in the professional category, but thought better of it. Having feigned to be happy in retirement, to consider the school a new, invigorating challenge, she would only upset her mother if she admitted otherwise.

"Actually, I had a more practical reason for looking at White Tie and Tails this afternoon," Anita admitted as she headed for the bedroom. "Come on, I want to check on something."

Curious, Gabby followed, her footsteps muffled by the apartment's cream–colored, wall–to–wall carpeting. The peach shades dominating the living room carried through to the bedroom, as well, though the bedspread and the drapes were a pale Pacific aqua. A portrait of her mother—commissioned by her father just after they were married—hung over the bedroom fireplace, reminding Gabby of how much she looked like Anita.

"Here we are." Her mother threw open the lid of a small trunk that had been dragged outside the closet. Leaning over, she riffled through wads of tissue paper to withdraw a slippery satin gown. The smell of mothballs permeated the air. "Remember my costume from the 'Dance of Love' scene?"

"Of course I do."

The dress was her mother's favorite piece of memorabilia, one Gabby hadn't seen in years. Anita had kept her stash of old costumes, props and scripts hidden from her family, but Gabby had managed to find them. Another secret she'd had to keep from her father, she thought sadly as her mother stroked the material. Now yellowed with age, the once–white garment was a beautiful recreation of the thirties bias–cut.

"It's still gorgeous," Gabby murmured, fingering one of the skirt's wide godets. "The Metropolitan Museum's costume department would love to get their hands on this, especially since the Brooks/Garfield movies are considered classics of nostalgia."

"Well, I'm not giving it to them." Anita held the gown at arm's length, lining it up against Gabby as she narrowed her eyes. "Hmm, you're a little taller than I, and you have wider shoulders, but this dress might fit, anyway."

"You want me to try it on?"

"Don't you think that would be fun? We've got the same coloring, same eyes, a similar shade of hair." Anita paused. "At least I used to be a strawberry blonde." She sighed. "Time flies. Come on—let's see what you look like in this."

Unable to figure out why her mother was insisting, Gabby took the dress from her. "I suppose I can try the dress on, if that would make you happy."

"Making you happy is what I'm most concerned about." When Gabby raised her brows, Anita went on, "I don't want to do this just to get even, you understand. I'm hoping you can make a name for yourself."

Gabby didn't understand at all. She frowned. "What on earth are you talking about?"

"How would you like to go to L.A. to perform?"

"Perform in what?" Despite the crazy circumstances, Gabby's heart gave an excited lurch at the very thought of dancing professionally again.

"You've been offered a job appearing at the grand opening of a plush new Hollywood nostalgia club that will showcase re–creations of famous numbers from musicals of the '30s, '40s and '50s."

"By whom? And why would someone have contacted you instead of me?"

Great Double Romance
By Clean Romance Reviews
This was a very enjoyable book. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this story. It was almost a dual romance, following Anita and Price at the same time as Kit and Gabby. I loved the intertwining of the stories. I must say though, I felt the Anita and Price story was stronger with more conflict to deal with. The mirrored conflicts were still fun to see. Personally I sympathized with the men more than the women - but that's me. The side characters were not very evident, aside from Lucille, but with four main characters that didn't feel like a problem. Well written and fun - you definitely want to pick this one up.

Two delightful romps in one book
By A Customer
"Call of the Wild" by Lisa Bingham. When Nellie the gorilla rejected her eleventh suitor in two years, Dr. Wilhelmina Bush, owner of the Maratonga Behavioral Institute and Zoological Park decides a change is needed. She informs researcher Jake Grisholm that she hired radio sex therapist Alana Childe to assist. Alana learns the hard way that her client the "goddaughter" is a gorilla, but even more difficult is that Jake is the one man whose seduction years ago remains implanted in her heart and soul. Likewise that night of ecstasy is Jake's dream moment. With a gorilla and her godmother interceding, how can this couple fail to mate? A gorillas in the midst of a relationship turns this work into a charmingly humorous tale.
"Everything but Anchovies" by Susan Peterson. Between filling in at the restaurant making and delivering pizza and working as a tyro police officer on the Bracket City, New York force, Quinby Parker has no social life. Part of her problem is a lack of time, but a major dilemma is that no one wants to date a cop. However, Sergeant Josh Reed, the most decorated cop on the force, sure looks good to the female rookie, but the supercop has a kid and besides why would he date a klutzy police officer like Quinby unless love sentences both of them to a lifetime together. Two cops and a pizza are the right ingredients for a jocular romantic story.
Once again, the two stories in the Duet line are fun and amusing, as readers will enjoy the latest Duets.

Buy it for the Anchovies
By Carol A. Strickland
Unfortunately, although Bingham shows she can write, the heroine in "Call of the Wild" is one of those romance heroines whose lives come to a halt when they meet A Man and suddenly the entire universe revolves around him with no room for the heroine to shine on her own. (And frankly, this Man doesn't seem worth it.) The setting held great promise with the fascinating premise of gorilla behavior contrasted to the life of a radio relationships advisor, but unfortunately fell flat when that premise was given a simplified, saccharine and sexist coating.
However, Susan Peterson's entry is wonderful, well worth the price of the book and then some. Funny, romantic, heartwarming, and down-to-earth. The only negative thing about it is that it was too short and the father sub-plot was resolved off-camera, the son sub-plot was unresolved (unless the dance with the ex was supposed to signal in some way that it had been resolved), and the unusual foster family was not examined more closely.
That was the main problem. A great read like "Anchovies" cried out for a longer book where we could really dig into the characters of these diverse, fascinating and funny people.

low 4
By M. Cookson
I would've given this book (these books) a three, except for the fact that I did really enjoy the characters. Lisa Bingham's _Call of the Wild_ was really more silly than funny and Nellie, the gorilla, has more romantic dates than Alana, the main female character in the story, but, for the most part it was okay. I have the feeling that people who know more about gorillas than I do would cringe at reading the story, but the tension between Alana and Jake was fun to read. Susan Peterson's _Everything But Anchovies_ was my favorite of the two stories, although even it had its problems. Josh, the handsome supercop, gets partnered with Quinby, a rookie who keeps messing up and who has an incredibly long resume. Quinby was great and I loved Josh, but it felt like Peterson had some problems with Harlequin's page number restrictions. For example, it's mentioned that Josh's ex-wife wants to take their son far away from him, something which bothers Josh a great deal, but this issue is never actually resolved. It felt like the son was only in the story in order to cause a little temporary tension in Josh and maybe to add a cuteness factor.

WOW!
By Elizabeth Berry
I am not one for books with multiple stories in them. Just as the stories seem to get good they are over. Maggies is of course the exception. This book has 3 main characters and a story for each of them and each of them is just as good as any book. Wow! Is putting it mildly. I love the way she brings them all together even though you don't have to read all three to understand any of them. All if them are love stories, but far FAR from the mushy kind. Each person has battles to fight before they can even think of being happily ever after. Must read!

Enjoyable vampire romance series
By Dr W. Richards
Maggie Shayne introduced me to vampire romances: one of her Twilight novellas was in an anthology of darker love stories, and I was intrigued by the idea, never having come across vampires outside horror (which I don't read) before. This collection houses the first three of her Twilight series: Phantasies, Memories and Illusions. Brief reviews of each first.
Twilight Phantasies: This story introduces Eric Marquand, transformed into a vampire just before his date with Madame Guillotine during the French Revolution. He's something of a scientist, and loves working on things to make the life of a vampire easier. He also understands all about the Belladonna anitgen, which the Chosen carry. He has, for years, been linked mentally to Tamara, one of the Chosen, who has been brought up by a DPI operative (DPI being a branch of the FBI set up to hunt down and kill vampires). But Tamara and Eric are irrestibly drawn to each other, despite all the reasons why they shouldn't be together... Can Tamara accept what Eric is? Can she escape the clutches of the DPI to be with him? A gripping and at times heartwrenching story.
In Twilight Memories the story focuses on Roland, Eric's friend, and another vampire, Rhiannon - who is, in fact, the vampire who transformed Roland. Rhiannon has been in love with Roland for centuries, but he never seems to return her interest. He disapproves of her wild, uncontrollable behaviour, which frequently puts her in danger. Rhiannon believes that Roland disapproves of *her*, and her behaviour is mainly aimed at making him notice her. But Roland has sworn never to love again, because of a tragedy in his past. Can Rhiannon get through to him? Can he see the pain his attitude is causing her? Eric and Tamara reappear in this story, along with a familiar DPI agent.
Finally, there is Twilight Illusions, my favourite of the trilogy. Damien, the oldest known vampire, has not made a habit of associating with others of his kind, and as a result he knows nothing of the Chosen. He performs as an illusionist, using his powers to entertain and to select women from whom he can feed - he hypnotises them into believing that they were only dreaming. However, someone is killing off women he's been with... and Shannon is on his trail. What she doesn't realise is that she's one of the Chosen, and Damien is her mentor. Eric Marquand makes a welcome reappearance in this book, helping Damien to come to terms with himself and what he is. Shannon, however, is seriously ill, and before she's even come to terms with her discovery that Damien is a vampire, she has another attack and is close to death. Can Damien save her? And is the price he - and she - would have to pay if he did so worth it?
I enjoyed the trilogy very much, although I have to say that the DPI does get old very fast; it's a major part of the plot in all three stories, and I understand in Shayne's other Twilight books. I'm far more interested in the romances than in seeing the characters have to fend off quasi-FBI agents. That aside, Shayne's writing is good and her plots and characterisation very enjoyable. She's written characters which stayed in my mind for some time after I finished the book, and it's on my 'to read again' shelf.

From the phenomenal Nora Roberts come two endearing stories of the power of love.

"The Name of the Game"

Johanna Patterson didn't give her trust—or her heart—easily. Certainly not to a man who lived in the public eye. So why was Sam Weaver suddenly playing a starring role in her dreams? The irritating man had a way of slipping past all her defenses and coaxing her into his arms. But Johanna had learned her lessons the hard way and was certain she could resist this man's charms…couldn't she?

"Once More with Feeling"

When Brandon Carstairs walked out on her five years ago, Raven Williams had been devastated. Now here he was, offering her the professional opportunity of a lifetime—an offer she couldn't refuse. Despite the undeniable heat between them, Raven vowed that once burned, twice shy. Cool, collected, she was going to be an icy professional. But when the sparks start flying, it's hard not to melt….

"Marge Whittier, this is your chance to win ten thousand dollars. Are you ready?"

Marge Whittier, a forty-eight-year-old schoolteacher and grandmother of two from Kansas City squirmed in her chair. The lights were on, the drum was rolling and the possibility of her being sick was building. "Yes, I'm ready."

"Good luck, Marge. The clock will start with your first pick. Begin."

Marge swallowed a lump of panic, shuddered with excitement and chose number six. Her sixty seconds began to dwindle, and the tension grew as she and her celebrity partner picked their brains for the right answers. They leaped over such questions as who founded psychoanalysis and how many yards in a mile, then came to a screeching halt. What element do all organic compounds contain?

Marge went pale, and her lips quivered. She was an English teacher and a bit of a history and movie buff, but science wasn't her long suit. She looked pleadingly at her partner, who was better known for her wit than for her wisdom. Precious seconds ticked away. As they fumbled, the buzzer sounded. Ten thousand dollars flowed through Marge's sweaty fingers.

The studio audience groaned their disappointment.

"Too bad, Marge." John Jay Johnson, the tall, sleekly polished host, laid a sympathetic hand on her shoulder. His rich, rolling voice expressed just the right combination of disappointment and hope. "You were so close. But with eight correct answers you add another eight hundred dollars to your total. An impressive one." He smiled at the camera. "We'll be back after this break to total up Marge's winnings and to give you the correct answer to the stumper. Stay with us."

The music was cued. John Jay kept his avuncular smile handy. He used the timed ninety-second break to come on to the pretty celebrity panelist.

"Pompous jerk," Johanna muttered. The pity was that she was too aware his smooth looks and slick manner were keeping Trivia Alert up in the ratings. As producer, she'd learned to acceptJohn Jay as part of the set. She checked the second hand of her watch before walking over to the losers. Putting on a smile of her own, she commiserated and congratulated as she eased them along. She needed them in camera range for the finish.

"Coming up on five," she announced, and signaled for applause and music. "And cue."

John Jay, his arm around Marge and his three-thousand-dollar caps gleaming, closed the show.

They were one big happy family as the assistant director shut off his stopwatch. "That's a wrap."

Kiki Wilson, Marge's partner and the current star of a popular situation comedy, chatted a few moments longer with Marge in a way that would have the schoolteacher remembering her warmly for years to come. When Kiki rose, her smile was still firmly in place as she walked the few steps to John Jay.

"If you ever pull something like that again," she said quietly, "you'll need a paramedic."

Knowing she was referring to his quick—and, if he did say so, clever—hand maneuver just before the end of the break, John Jay smiled. "Just part of the service. About that drink, sweetheart…"

"Kiki." In a smooth move that didn't appear nearly as rushed and harassed as it was, Johanna swung over and scooted the actress away. "I want to thank you again for agreeing to do the show. I know how hectic your schedule must be."

Johanna's warm voice and soothing manner brought Kiki's blood pressure down slightly. "I enjoyed it." Kiki pulled out a cigarette and tapped it absently against an enameled case. "It's a cute show, moves fast. And God knows the exposure never hurts."

Though Johanna didn't smoke, she carried a small gold lighter. Pulling it out, she lit Kiki's cigarette. "You were wonderful. I hope you'll consider coming back."

Kiki blew out smoke and regarded Johanna. The lady knew her job, Kiki admitted. Even though she looked like some cuddly little model for shampoo or yogurt. It had been a long day, but the catered dinner break had been first-class, the studio audience generous with their applause. In any case, her agent had told her that Trivia Alert was the up-and-coming game show of the year. Considering that, and the fact that Kiki had a good sense of humor, she smiled.

"I just might. You've got a good crew, with one notable exception."

Johanna didn't have to turn to know where Kiki's narrowed gaze had landed. With John Jay it was either love or disgust, with little middle ground. "I have to apologize for any annoyance."

"Don't bother. There are plenty of jerks in the business." Kiki studied Johanna again. Quite a face, she decided, even with the minimal makeup. "I'm surprised you don't have a few fang marks."

Johanna smiled. "I have very thick skin."

Anyone who knew her would have attested to that. Johanna Patterson might have looked soft and creamy, but she had the energy of an Amazon. For eighteen months she had slaved, hustled and bargained to get and keep Trivia Alert on the air. She wasn't a novice in the entertainment business, and that made her all the more aware that behind the scenes and in the boardrooms it was still a man's world.

That would change eventually, but eventually was too long a wait. Johanna wasn't patient enough to wait for doors to open. When she wanted something badly enough, she gave them a push. For that she was willing to make certain adjustments herself. The business of entertainment was no mystery to her; nor were the deals, the concessions or the compromises. As long as the end product was quality, it didn't matter.

She'd had to swallow pride and sacrifice a principle or two to get her baby off and running. For example, it wasn't her name, but her father's logo that flashed importantly at the end of the show: Carl W Patterson Productions. His was the name the network brass related to, and his was the one they trusted. So she used it—grudgingly—then ran things her way.

Thus far, the uneasy marriage was into its second year and holding its own. Johanna knew the business—and her father— too well to take for granted that it would continue.

So she worked hard, tying up loose ends, hammering out solutions to problems and delegating carefully what couldn't be handled personally. The success or failure of the show wouldn't make or break her, financially or professionally, but she had more than money and reputation tied up with it. She had her hopes and her self-esteem.

The studio audience had been cleared. A few technicians remained on the set, either gossiping or tidying up last-minute business. It was just past eight o'clock, and moving into hour fourteen for Johanna.

"Bill, do you have the dupes?" She accepted the copies of the day's tape from her editor. Five shows were produced and recorded in one full-day session. Five costume changes for the celebrity panelists—Johanna had a policy against referring to them as guest stars. Five wardrobe trips for John Jay, who insisted on a change from underwear out for each show. His natty suits and coordinated ties would be sent back to the Beverly Hills tailor who provided them free in exchange for the plug at the end of each show.

His job was over, but Johanna's was just beginning. The tapes would be reviewed, edited and carefully timed. Johanna would oversee each step. There would be mail to go through, letters from home viewers who hoped to be chosen as contestants, more letters from people who disagreed with certain answers. She'd go head-to-head with her research coordinator to check facts and select new questions for upcoming shows. Though she couldn't personally interview and screen each potential contestant, she would go over her contestant coordinator's selections.

The game-show scandals of the fifties were long over, but no one wanted a repeat of them. Standards and Practices was very strict, their rules and regulations very clear. Johanna made it a habit never to relax her own, and to check each detail herself.

When screened contestants arrived at the studio for a day's taping, they were turned over to staff members who sequestered them from the crew, the audience and their prospective partners. They were entertained and soothed, literally cut off from the show until their turn came to participate.

Questions were locked in a safe. Only Johanna and her personal assistant had the combination.

Then, of course, there were the celebrities to deal with. They would want their favorite flowers and choice of beverage in their dressing rooms. Some would go with the flow and make her life easier, and others would be difficult just to show they were important. She knew—and they knew she knew— that most of them appeared on morning game shows not for the money or the fun but for the exposure. They were plugging series and specials, placating their networks or scrambling to keep their face familiar to the public.

Fortunately, a good percentage of them had fun once the ball was rolling. There were still more, however, who required pampering, cajoling and flattery. She was willing, as long as they helped her keep her show on the air. When a woman had grown up with artistic temperaments and the wheeling and dealing of the entertainment business, very little surprised her.

"Johanna."

Regretfully Johanna put her fantasy of a hot bath and a foot massage on hold. "Yes, Beth?" She slipped the tapes into her oversize tote and waited for her assistant. Bethany Landman was young, sharp and energetic. Just now she seemed to be bubbling over. "Make it good. My feet are killing me."

"It's good." A bouncy dark contrast to Johanna's cool blond looks, Bethany gripped her clipboard and all but danced. "We've got him."

Johanna secured the tote on the shoulder of her slim violet-bluejacket. "Who have we got and what are we going to do with him?"

"Sam Weaver." Beth caught her lower lip between her teeth as she grinned. "And I can think of a lot of things we could do with him."

The fact that Bethany was still innocent enough to be impressed by a hard body and tough good looks made Johanna feel old and cynical. More, it made her feel as though she'd been born that way. Sam Weaver was every woman's dream. Johanna wouldn't have denied him his talent, but she was long past the point where sexy eyes and a cocky grin made her pulse flutter. "Why don't you give me the most plausible?"

"Johanna, you have no romance in your soul."

"No, I don't. Can we do this walking, Beth? I want to see if the sky's still there."

"You read that Sam Weaver's done his first TV spot?"

"A miniseries," Johanna added as they wound down the studio corridor.

"They aren't calling it a miniseries. Promotion calls it a four-hour movie event."

"I love Hollywood."

With a chuckle, Bethany shifted her clipboard. "Anyway, I took a chance and contacted his agent. The movie's on our network."

Johanna pushed open the studio door and breathed in the air. Though it was Burbank air and therefore far from fresh, it was welcome. "I'm beginning to see the master plan."

"The agent was very noncommittal, but…"

Johanna stretched her shoulders, then searched for her keys. "I think I'm going to like this but."'

"I just got a call from upstairs. They want him to do it. We'll have to run the shows the week before the movie and give him time to plug it every day." She paused just long enough to give Johanna a chance to nod. "With that guarantee they'll put on the pressure and we've got him."

"Sam Weaver," Johanna murmured. There was no denying his drawing power. Being tall, lanky and handsome in a rough sort of way didn't hurt, but he had more than that. A bit part in a feature film five, maybe six years before had been a springboard. He'd been top-billed and hot box office ever since. It was more than likely he'd be a pain in the neck to work with, but it might be worth it. She thought of the millions of televisions across the country, and the ratings. It would definitely be worth it.

"Good work, Beth. Let's get it firmed up."

"As good as done." Bethany stood by the spiffy little Mercedes as Johanna climbed in. "Will you fire me if I drool?"

"Absolutely." Johanna flashed a grin as she turned the key. "See you in the morning." She drove the car out of the lot like a bullet. Sam Weaver, she thought as she turned the radio up and let the wind whip her hair. Not a bad catch, she decided. Not bad at all.

Sam felt like a fish with a hook through his mouth, and he didn't enjoy the sensation. He slumped in his agent's overstuffed chair, his long, booted legs stretched out and a pained scowl on the face women loved to love.

"Good Lord, Marv. A game show? Why don't you tell me to dress like a banana and do a commercial?"

Marvin Jablonski chomped a candied almond, his current substitute for cigarettes. He admitted to being forty-three, which made him a decade older than his client. He was trim and dressed with a subtle flair that spoke of wealth and confidence. When his office had consisted of a phone booth and a briefcase, he'd dressed the same. He knew how vital illusions were in this town. Just as he knew it was vital to keep a client happy while you were manipulating him.

"I thought it was too much to expect that you'd be open-minded."

Sam recognized the touch of hurt in Marv's tone—the poor, self-sacrificing agent, just trying to do his job. Marv was far from poor and he'd never been into personal sacrifice. But it worked. With something like a sigh, Sam rose and paced the length of Marv's glitzy Century City office. "I was open-minded when I agreed to do the talk-show circuit."

Sam's easy baritone carried a hint of his native rural Virginia, but his reputation in Los Angeles wasn't that of a country gentleman. As he paced, his long-legged stride made the observer think of a man who knew exactly where he was going.

And so he did, Marv thought. Otherwise, as a selective and very successful theatrical agent he would never have taken the struggling young actor on six years before. Instinct, Marv was wont to say, was every bit as important as the power breakfast. "Promotion's part of the business, Sam."

"Yeah, and I'll do my bit. But a game show? How is guessing what's behind door number three going to boost the ratings for Roses?"

"There aren't any doors on Trivia."

Two encores
By wogan
`Duets' contains two previously published Nora Roberts stories; `The Name of the Game' published in 1988 and `Once more with Feeling' done in 1983. Neither book has been readily available in the past few years unless on the used book market, sometimes at a high price. I would hope readers of these novels know they need to be aware that many times these are previously published works and they need to look the titles up. It says a lot for Nora Roberts' writing skills that I realized; since I seldom remember titles, once I was a few pages into the first story, it seemed familiar, but I didn't mind reading it again.
Both stories deal with the show business community. `The Name of the Game' tells of Johanna Patterson and her reluctant romance with an up and coming star Sam Weaver. Their romance is, as most' fraught with problems that, of course are overcome; but the story is realistic, in a Hollywood way. By the way the answer to the first question in the book is... carbon - read and see.
The second book is about two former singer/composers, Raven Williams and Brandon Carstairs and how they meet and find the love they lost. Again the story is interesting and done in a realistic show business fashion.
Nora Roberts' talent for characters is yet again present in both of these stories, as is her background material - everything rings true; from the hills of Hollywood to the coast of England's Cornwall. It's a book well worth getting to curl up with for a relaxing and quiet read.

Two Novels Beat As One
By Rosa
This is best of Nora Roberts reissues. It has everything to draw you into the story. Each Heroine is struggling whether to take a chance at love. It has drama, suspense and a touch of irony. If you want to perfect novel to sit and really savor. Pick it up.

Perceptions didn't always reveal the truth about a man. What he appeared to be and what he was could be two different things. Surface and depth. The surface reflected the shell of the man, what he looked like, what he said, what he did. Underneath that, a well of secrets lurked. Painful secrets that death exposed. Ruthless and indifferent in life. Human in death. That about summed up Reginald Adair. Few had liked him, but then, no one had really known him, had they?

Carson Adair marveled over how little he knew his father when he thought he had. He spread his hands over the top of the desk. How would his father have felt sitting here? Powerful. Accomplished.

Detached.

Sad.

Human…

Carson would not have associated that word with his dad prior to his murder. But a gnawing curiosity had nestled inside him. If his father hadn't been who he'd thought, who had he been?

He imagined what it must have been like to be the man at the top of a thriving telecommunications corporation, running the competition into the ground, doing whatever it took to keep shareholders happy and revenue flowing. Not caring about anything or anyone else. Maybe he rarely noticed the spectacular view of downtown San Diego. Maybe he rarely enjoyed a lunch or dinner for anything other than a business meeting.

His wife. His kids. He couldn't have had many fond memories about them. Turns out Reginald had been consumed by the kidnapping of his first-born son. Indifference had hidden his grief. No one had known about Jackson Adair until the reading of the will. Carson had seen the reports from his father's secret investigation.

Lost in what it must have been like to be Reginald Adair, he still couldn't say he knew or even liked his father. He definitely couldn't say he loved him. But he was moved by the discovery that the man had real emotions, that he'd carried such a weighty burden all these years—and kept to himself. It explained so much. That his father was capable of love, that he must have loved his firstborn son and his first wife, two things he'd never mentioned to anyone. Carson wondered if Patsy would have been a different woman had she been able to make Reginald love her the way he must have loved his first family. Had his aloofness led to her killing him? It would appear so, since she had fled the country and was the prime suspect in his murder case.

Although his father was dead, Carson was getting to know him for the first time. That dredged up so much conflict in him. Until now, he'd strove to be everything his father wasn't. Do and be whatever earned his father's disapproval. Now he felt a connection to the man. He cared about giving him justice and finding the son who had been taken from him. And in the process, knowing him as he'd never had.

People said he was just like Reginald and that had always annoyed him. Maybe it still did. Back then, he'd wanted to get as far away from his father and his empire as he could. His mother, too, but as a boy, it had been his father's approval he'd craved. To get that, he'd have had to devote his life to his father's dream. AdAir Corp. When he'd grown into a young man, he'd done the opposite. He'd rebelled and joined the Marines. His father had been so angry when he'd informed him. And Carson had been nothing but glad that he was mad.

His gaze fell to a photograph facing him on the desk. It was of Landry and Whit with Reginald. They stood in this office, smiling with warmth Carson would have called fake before learning about Jackson. Something in the background caught his eye. It was a blue ceramic bowl on top of a wood-and-glass display case along the wall next to the door. Carson looked there. The cabinet was there but the ceramic bowl was missing. The picture looked fairly recent.

Where was the bowl, and was there anything significant about it?

"Meeting's started, Mr. Adair."

Whit's secretary stood in the doorway of the office.

Carson stood. "Right. Thanks." He'd lost track of time. "You have the envelope?"

"Yes, sir. I'll wait for your call."

"Thanks." He hoped he wouldn't have to call her.

Taking the papers he'd been studying earlier, he left the office and walked down the bright and wide hallway of AdAir Corp with a limp that embittered him when he dwelled on it too much. Nothing like facing the rest of his life with a constant reminder of what he could no longer have. Mobility. A career in the Marines.

Reaching the conference room where the mediation meeting had been scheduled regarding Patsy's dispute over his father's will, Carson entered. Everyone was already there: his brother, Whit, sister, Landry, Georgia Mason and her stepmother, Ruby, and two attorneys—one Patsy had apparently hired on her own to represent her dispute, and the mediation lawyer. Despite the crowd of people, Carson noticed Georgia right away. Long, luxurious, dark red hair cascaded over her shoulders. The pencil skirt trimmed her curvy waist and her long, slender legs were bare from the knees down. Her dark green eyes glared at him from across the room. Everyone else had taken a seat but her. She was still mad at him. Mad at every Adair in the room. But her beauty struck him just as much as the first time he'd seen her. The sight of her really got his testosterone going.

"Glad you could make it," she said.

"Sorry. I got hung up in Reginald's office." He limped over to her. It wasn't a horrible limp, beastly but only a little.

After nodding to Whit and Landry, he put the papers facedown on the table, then went to Georgia and pulled out a chair for her.

Her eyes traveled down and then rose up his body, curious about his limp and then all fire when she met his eyes.

"Have a seat, Ms. Mason," he said cajolingly.

"After you, Mr. Adair." She didn't reciprocate his tone, hers having a decided edge.

He grinned and saw Ruby smiling at the exchange. At sixty, she was a little thin but attractive with light brown hair and hazel eyes. She looked nothing like Georgia, although Georgia would probably age just as gracefully as Ruby had.

"Mrs. Mason," he said.

"Mr. Adair."

After acknowledging the mediation lawyer, he saved his next greeting for last. It was Patsy's attorney. Before she'd left the country, she'd given him explicit instructions regarding her dispute over Ruby Mason's inheritance and the authority to sign on her behalf. Carson planned to squash her intentions today.

The beady-eyed, short, stocky, balding attorney gave a nod in greeting.

"Shall we begin?" the mediation lawyer said. His name was Schmidt. He was skinny and had all of his blond hair. Georgia had chosen him, and the rest of them had agreed to meet to sign an agreement today, to settle this dispute outside of court.

Carson waited for Georgia to sit down.

When she did, he took the seat beside her, seeing how she sat straighter, ramrod stiff. She didn't like him at first sight, and his desire to charm her went beyond what would be required for a casual acquaintance. Luckily, he had enough of his father in him to maintain a business sense and stay professional.

"We're here today because Patsy Adair doesn't think Ruby Mason should have any share of the inheritance," the mediator started things off.

"I believe I speak for my brother and sister when I say Ruby is entitled to whatever our father decided to give her." Carson took over the meeting.

Schmidt looked at him, not approving but not stopping him.

"He obviously wanted her to have something," Carson continued, "so I propose we make this meeting short and simple and agree that it isn't our right to change his will. Are we all in agreement?"

"I am," Whit said. Dressed in a dark suit, impeccably trimmed and looking the part of Adair's new leader, he sat in a confident pose.

"I am," Landry echoed. She seemed loopy, as if she'd taken something before coming here. Ever since their father's murder and especially the announcement that Patsy was his suspected murderer, she had not been herself. Carson was getting worried about her.

"Speaking on behalf of Patsy," Patsy's attorney said.

"I—"

"You'll sign this agreement or I'll contest her share. I've already spoken with Whit and Landry. They support my decision."

"You can't do that," Patsy's attorney said. "All parties have to be present and sign a mediation agreement. Patsy would never agree to this." He swung his hand toward the document on the table in front of Schmidt.

"Yes, I can contest her share. She is suspected of murder, as you are well aware."

"Being suspect and proven guilty are two different things, Mr. Adair. I won't sign any agreement that gives Ms. Mason any portion of Reginald's will."

"You're authorized to sign on her behalf."

"Yes, I am." He wore a smug look. He had the power.

All right. Carson preferred to keep this civil, but Patsy's attorney gave him no choice. "Might I have a word with you in private?"

Carson stood. He extended his hand to the conference room door.

Patsy's attorney's smug look changed to confusion.

"Anything you have to say should be said in front of everyone," Schmidt said.

"I'm sure you won't want me to say what I have to say in public."

Patsy's attorney's eyes twitched in question. And then concern. A guilty person always knew when their crimes had been discovered.

Whit looked at him with a nod of encouragement, and Landry looked as if she didn't care. She probably just wanted to get out of here.

When the attorney didn't move, Carson said, "I'm more than happy to oblige Mr. Schmidt."

Patsy's attorney stood. "Excuse us a moment."

Carson led him across the hall to a smaller conference room he'd had one of the assistants reserve. On the table was an envelope that contained copies of what Whit's assistant had.

"I hired a private investigator to obtain these photographs. If you don't sign on behalf of Patsy, they go to your wife."

Patsy's attorney looked from the envelope to Carson. Then he snatched up the envelope and slid out the first of several photos. He didn't look at any others. The first one was enough, as Carson suspected it would be.

"What kind of businessman are you?" Patsy's attorney asked.

"I'm not." He'd run as far and fast away from business as he could. He didn't even work for AdAir Corp. And he didn't like feeling as though he was acting just like his father, using blackmail to get what he wanted. His only justification was that he had to right a wrong, Patsy's wrong, and to honor his father's wishes. For that, he'd do anything. This was a quick and sure way to see that Patsy no longer poisoned his family.

"You think you can get away with blackmailing me?"

"I prefer to think of it as blackmailing my mother."

Patsy's attorney scoffed. "Your family is despicable."

"I'll be sure to tell Patsy that if she isn't guilty of murdering my father." Otherwise, he'd have to agree that at least his mother was despicable.

"Your mother has a legitimate reason for disputing Reginald's will."

"Jealousy is not a legitimate reason." Carson took a step closer. Taller than him by six inches or more, he loomed over him. "Sign the agreement or your wife finds out about your double life."

"Don't you care at all about your own mother's wishes?"

He shook his head. "Not in the least."

"This is preposterous!" Patsy's attorney slapped the envelope down onto the table. "I won't stand for it."

"Your choice." Carson pressed the speaker on the phone and called Whit's assistant.

"Yes, Mr. Adair," she said.

"Go ahead and deliver the package."

"Right away, sir."

"Wait!" Patsy's attorney jerked forward toward the phone as though the assistant could see him try to stop her. "That won't be necessary."

"You'll sign?" Carson asked.

"Yes."

"Never mind, Carol. Wait for me to stop by your desk."

"Yes, sir."

Carson ended the call. "If you don't go into that conference room and sign the agreement, I will have those photos couriered to your wife this morning."

"You're as ruthless as your father."

Carson had never blackmailed anyone before, and it didn't come easy to him. "Perhaps you should be more particular about the clients you represent." He stepped toward the door.

"What about these?" Patsy's attorney gestured to the photos.

"They're yours. The originals will go into my personal safe."

Anger flared from the attorney's eyes. He picked up the envelope and took it with him.

Back in the conference room, Schmidt looked suspicious. Whit already knew what this was about.

"I signed the agreement, Carson." Landry stood. "I'm going to go now."

"Okay, I'll talk to you soon."

She left the room while Schmidt, Georgia and Ruby watched Patsy's attorney stuff the envelope into his briefcase.

"We're all ready to sign the agreement."

Georgia looked stunned, gaping at him, no doubt wondering how he'd done it. And why.

Patsy's attorney signed the agreement and stood, picking up his briefcase. With a last glare at Carson, he stormed out of the conference room.

"What did you do?" Georgia asked.

"That's between me and him." He handed Ruby a pen. "It's not important anymore. What's important is that he signed."

She took it and signed the mediation agreement.

"I'll let you know when the transaction takes place," Carson said.

She smiled warmly up at him. "Thank you, Mr. Adair. Your father would be so proud."

He grunted derisively. "You have no idea."

You're as ruthless as your father. He'd done whatever was necessary to repair the damage Patsy had left behind when she'd fled. He wasn't happy about having to use a strong arm to make her attorney do the right thing.

Whit came up behind him with a pat on his back. "Thanks for taking care of this, Carson."

"No problem. Hey." He stopped Whit from leaving. He leaned over and picked up the papers. "Did you know about these?" He showed the pages to Whit, who studied them.

"No."

"There's contact and background information on Reginald's housekeeper and the neighbor. He must have gotten this just before he died."

"And planned to go to North Carolina to talk to them?"

"That would be my guess."

Whit put the papers down and looked at Carson. "Are you going to check it out?"

"Police report said they talked to everyone, but maybe Dad had a reason for talking to them again."

"I'd have to agree with that," Whit said. "Where'd you find these?"

Good second installment in the series.
By S. Frank
In this one Carson, second son of the murdered Reginald Adair, is determined to find the missing half brother they never knew about. To do that, he needs the help of his father's first wife. But her stepdaughter Georgia has spent her whole life hearing about how the wealthy Adairs treated her stepmother and she is determined to protect her from harassment.

I really liked Carson. I felt bad for him, because he was feeling rather lost on several fronts. He has lost his career in the Marines due to an injury and isn't sure what he wants to do now, though his brother Whit has some ideas. That mission was also unsuccessful and resulted in the loss of his best friend. His father's death has made it impossible to heal the breach that had formed between them, and the revelations about his first family make him feel that he never knew his father at all. Taking over the search for his missing brother gives him a sense of purpose he hasn't had since he got out of the Marines. Meeting the lovely Georgia adds a different sort of challenge to his day. I loved the way that he doesn't let her prejudice against the wealthy in general and the Adairs specifically bother him. In fact, he seems to find it pretty amusing and is determined to change her mind. He understands why she feels that way, and also sees that she has spent far more time taking care of her stepmother's needs and ignoring her own. I loved the way that he does everything he can to show her that having money isn't necessarily a bad thing. He also comes to see that there is more than just his family's money that is bothering her, and has the patience to learn what it is. I loved all the things he did for her.

I had a little more trouble warming up to Georgia. I understood her need to protect Ruby because of everything the woman had been through. But her refusal to see anything good in the younger Adairs, even after they showed that they didn't agree with their parents really started to irritate me. She saw Ruby relax around them, and also get interested in one of the neighbor men, and tried hard to discourage her from doing so, fearing that she would just get hurt again. Georgia was attracted to Carson, but her prejudices wouldn't let her think that there was any chance of something between them. She also feared that she was only seeing what Carson wanted her to see. She had had a bad experience with a man that she thought she knew well, only to learn that he had a very dark side. Trusting Carson was something that came very hard for her, though she did eventually see that he was a man of integrity. She seemed to have trouble seeing that being a good man was not mutually exclusive of being wealthy. I got quite frustrated with her judgmental attitude toward the wealthy, especially when she liked being the beneficiary of Carson's attentions. I really wanted to shake her when she took the siblings' shock at her suggestion about their brother's identity the wrong way and ran off in a snit. I thought she was very lucky that Carson cared enough to keep trying.

There was a lot going on during the suspense portion of the book and it really kept my interest. There was the ongoing search for clues about what had happened to the missing baby, mostly leading to dead ends, until the very end. There were also the attacks on Carson and Georgia, and how they led back to the failed mission that ended Carson's career in the Marines. The attacks also brought out Carson's protective side, and I loved seeing the care he took with Georgia's safety. There was an interesting twist to some of the attacks that wasn't a huge surprise, but did add some extra intensity to the action. It had me on the edge of my seat until it was finally resolved. I'm looking forward to the next book and finding out if Georgia's suspicions were correct.

One of the other things I enjoyed about this book was seeing characters from the first Adair series (The Adair Legacy) again. I loved seeing Kate happy with her first love, and that she's just as warm and friendly to Georgia as she was in the first books. I'm looking forward to seeing Derek Winchester, from that series, in the next book, since I really liked him.

I missed this the first time around!
By Valerie Matteson
I only started reading Nora Roberts about 10 years ago and missed many of her romances as I read JD Robb books and some of her longer mystery/adventure novels.

I find these first 3 stories of the Calhoun women to be of old-fashioned romance and a very enjoyable read. Aunt Coco reminds me of my mom. I also like the personalities of the sisters and how they are able to stand up for themselves but appear feminine and maybe even a little helpless. Men do sometimes like to know they are needed, but we women know we have real backbone when we need it! I also enjoy the ongoing hunt for the emeralds and wondering what the slimey thief is going to try to pull next!

I look forward to the next one.

Good summer read
By Book Fan
Nora Roberts is a good writer, but she's at her best when she's writing a series that covers multiple family members. That's the case with this book, and continues with the stories of Suzanna and Megan. Each book is good on it's own, but it's better to read them order because the stories do tie together.

The Calhoun women live in Bar Harbor in The Towers, the family home for over 80 years. The place has seen better days and they are facing the prospect of selling it. The first story is about Catherine and Trent. Trent's family owns a string of first-rate hotels and he wants to buy The Towers. The two, of course, have an attraction and by the end of the book, it is agreed that half will remain the Calhoun family home, half will be renovated into a hotel. Woven into the story is one about Bianca, the girls great-grandmother. It tells her story from her point of view about her loveless marriage and how she falls in love with a painter. The similarities between the two stories are wonderful.

There is also the legend of the Calhoun emeralds, a necklace that Bianca hid from her husband and has never been found. It is agreed they are hidden in the house, and so the mystery of finding them begins.

This is a great old-fashioned romance story. There is humor, love, friendship and mystery. The sisters are a wonderful group of women, Catherine, the mechanic, Amanda, the sensible one, Lilah, the carefree one and Suzanna, the mom. Megan, a sister-in-law by marriage, fits right in with them.

Once you start reading the first entry, Courting Catherine, you won't stop until the conclusion with Megan's Mate. I found them hard to put down. Nora Roberts, once again, proves she's one of the best in romance writing!

The first three
By CB
This is a reissue of the first three stories of the Calhoun Women Series, Courting Catherine, A Man for Amanda, and For the Love of Lilah. I don't agree with the previous review by S.L. Webb, first of all the aunt is extremely loving, I mean, she took in her four neices after their parents died, and she is usually funny, as are Suzanna's children. For the Love of Lilah was the second book I read by Nora Roberts, and if it hadn't been that good, I probably wouldn't of become the Nora-holic I am today. I need to own them all. (The aunt acts the same way the father does in the MacGregor series.)
