The Whistleblower

No sooner did number-crunching dynamo Ilene O'Hara uncover fraud in her company than she needed protection for herself and the son she'd been hiding from detective Clay Cavanaugh, a man she still loved. When Clay appeared as their protector, she wondered if the truth would destroy their fiery connection - or bind them forever?

Clay had the reputation of being a ruthless law enforcer- and a Casanova. After Ilene, he ensured that love never entered the equation again. But now, years later, she needed his help. As the forbidden attraction between witness and protector raged out of control, Clay could tell she was keeping a secret from him. But would it stop him from taking the ultimate risk?

When the law and passion collide, this family learns the ultimate truth, that love takes no prisoners!

Contemporary crime storyline, but a standard "secret child" romance
By Hope This Helps
Rating 2.5 __Contains sexual content (none graphic).
Stand alone read. 2nd in Cavanaugh Justice series.

EASY READ. Contemporary crime story, likable characters, strong family theme, great secondary cast, and menacing villain(s). HOWEVER, the story just drags in places and the painful past shared by the hero and heroine overwhelms the current romance. They move from unresolved angst to hot, sneaky sex while hiding out in the home of the hero's father. This isn't romantic. It's just awkward. These flaws detract from the storyline.

THE STORY reunites Ilene O'Hara and the love-of-her-life, "commit-na-phobic" Clay Cavanaugh. As the story unfolds, Ilene, brings evidence of corporate fraud to the DA, who requests protection for Ilene and her five-year old son, Alex. However, when Police Detective Clay Cavanaugh shows up, she refuses his protection afraid he will figure out Alex is his son. When a dark figure tapes a threatening message to her dinning room window, she realizes they are in danger and calls Clay for help. He immediately moves both Ilene and her son to his father's house where they can remain hidden from the vicious thug(s) hired to eliminate the only witness, Ilene (bpl).

OVERALL, interesting storyline with strong characters. But, nothing special. CAVANAUGH JUSTICE series currently includes 29 books.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, and E. Palfrey. For good mystery/detective writers you might try J. D. Robb, D. Stabenow, S. Grafton, S. Sala, Gayle Wilson, and Julie Miller.

Excellent book!
By paula legate
This book had twist and turns that I never saw coming. It had nonstop action, and the suspense was perfect. This is one of those book that you just can't put down until the last page.

Jillian has been a Real estate agent for years. For the first time she is buying her first home. The house has set empty for 17 years. The town says it's haunted. I thought with it being October, it was the perfect time to read a book like this. In parts of the story it does have a creepy feel to it.

Jillian hires contractors to start remodeling the house. Shortly after is when the attacks start. It is clear that someone wants to scare Jillian away. She does not believe in ghost. Besides ghost don't vandalize a house with spray paint, or run you off the road.

Jillian is also the wedding planner for her best friend's wedding. Chase is the best man. The sparks are there between them. I love the banter back it forth. It was entertaining. Jillian found kittens when she moved into her home. Chase, and Jillian named them Jake, and Jill if that tells you anything about the Hero, and Heroine. When Jillian became a target, Chase went into protective mode. he had been in the Army, and had been deployed a few times. He went to Cape Cod for his best friend's wedding, and to rest, and wind down from his last deployment. There was no way he was going to let Jillian face this alone. The two work together to uncover the mystery. WOW, what a mystery it turns out to be. Excellent book!

Deadly Obsession
By Elle James
A little girl walks home from school thrilled by the gift her teacher had given her for all of her help. She trips and hits her head and begins to lose consciousness. All of a sudden a blanket is wrapped around her and there is darkness as she is carried. Julie Thompson had been missing for thirty days when she appears back home with no memory of where she was during that time. Fear that Julie will be abducted again and no longer feeling safe, the family moves away.
Flash forward to today. Jillian Taylor is a realtor who moved to Cape Churn after visiting there two years ago. She is also the wedding planner for her friend Molly who is marrying Casanova Velez, and she just bought her first house, a fixer upper. To say that she is busy is an understatement.
Chance McCall has arrived in Cape Churn for a little R & R and to be the best man for his friend Nova Velez. Both men are ex-military and work for Stealth Operations Specialists. Chance also has PTSD which cases him to jump at loud noises and have nightmares. He is working on coping with his PTSD and hopes hanging out at his friend’s wedding will help with the symptoms. To keep himself busy, he offers to help Molly’s friend Jillian move into her new house. Jillian doesn’t like him at their first meeting yet Chance helps her anyway. Chance returns every day to help Jillian.
As Jillian’s is being renovated, strange things begin to happen, vandalism, strange noises, and the feeling that someone is watching her. Daryl Sims is one of the workers helping with the renovations. He has the mental capacity of a five year old and lived with his mother. Daryl also liked to take care of strays much to his mother’s disapproval. Many people want Jillian to give up her new home. She refuses and the strange happenings continue. As the renovations are finished, Jillian moves in but Chance goes with her to keep her safe. Jillian soon begins to have dreams she can’t explain. They begin to investigate what happened to Julia Thompson for thirty days. As they probe deeper, they realize that there is something between them yet are reluctant to delve further. When Mrs. Sims shows up at the house looking for Daryl, Jillian follows her outside to look for him. As they walk through the fog, Jillian soon realizes who she is. Mrs. Sims tries to stop Jillian from exposing her son and the fact that he was the one who had “kidnapped” all those years ago.
I have to say, I really enjoyed this story. It was full of twists and turns to keep the reader guessing throughout. The relationship between Chance and Jillian had a rocky start but soon developed into a love neither saw coming and the chance for a fresh start for both of them. On several occasions I thought I had figured out who was causing Jillian’s problems but Ms James stumped me at every turn. I was surprised by the ending, didn’t see that resolution coming. I so enjoyed this story and I look forward to reading other books in this series. I highly recommend this book.

With a briefcase in one hand and a half-eaten bagel in the other, Rachel raced up the courthouse steps. She hated to be late. Detested it. Knowing she'd drawn Judge Hatchet-Face Snyder for the morning hearing only made her more determined to be inside and at the defense table by 8:59. She had three minutes to spare, and would have had twice that if she hadn't stopped by the office first.

How could she have known that her boss would be lying in wait with another case file?

Two years of working as a public defender, she reminded herself as she hit the doors at a run. That was how she should have known.

She scanned the elevators, gauged the waiting crowd and opted for the stairs. Cursing her heels, she took them two at a time and swallowed the rest of the bagel. There was no use fantasizing about the coffee she craved to wash it down with.

She screeched to a halt at the courtroom doors and took a precious ten seconds to straighten her blue serge jacket and smooth down her tousled, chin-length black hair. A quick check showed her that her earrings were still in place. She looked at her watch and let out a deep breath.

Right on time, Stanislaski, she told herself as she moved sedately through the doors and into the courtroom. Her client, a twenty-three-year-old hooker with a heart of flint, was being escorted in as Rachel took her place. The solicitation charges would probably have earned her no more than a light fine and time served, but stealing the john's wallet had upped the ante.

As Rachel had explained to her bitter client, not all customers were too embarrassed to squawk when they lost two hundred in cash and a gold card.

"All rise!"

Hatchet-Face strode in, black robes flapping around all six-foot-three and two hundred and eighty pounds of him.He had skin the color of a good cappuccino and a face as round and unfriendly as the pumpkins Rachel remembered carving with her siblings every Halloween.

Judge Snyder tolerated no tardiness, no sass and no excuses in his courtroom. Rachel glanced over at the assistant district attorney who would be the opposing counsel. They exchanged looks of sympathy and got to work.

Rachel got the hooker off with ninety days. Her client was hardly brimming with gratitude as the bailiff led her away. She had better luck with an assault case…. After all,Your Honor, my client paid for a hot meal in good faith. When the pizza arrived cold, he pointed out the problem by offering some to the delivery boy. Unfortunately, his enthusiasm had him offering it a bit too heartily, and during the ensuing scuffle said pizza was inadvertently dumped on the delivery boy's head….

"Very amusing, Counselor. Fifty dollars, time served."

Rachel wrangled her way through the morning session. A pick-pocket, a drunk-and-disorderly, two more assaults and a petty larceny. They rounded things off at noon with a shoplifter, a two-time loser. It took all of Rachel's skill and determination to convince the judge to agree to a psychiatric evaluation and counseling.

"Not too shabby." The ADA was only a couple of years older than Rachel's twenty-six, but he considered himself an old hand."I figure we broke even."

She smiled and shut her briefcase."No way, Spelding. I edged you out with the shoplifter."

"Maybe." Spelding, who had been trying to wheedle his way into a date for weeks, walked out beside her. "Could be his psych will come back clean."

"Sure. The guy's seventy-two years old and steals disposable razors and greeting cards with flowers on them. Obviously he's perfectly rational."

"You PDs are such bleeding hearts." But he said it lightly, because he greatly admired Rachel's courtroom style. As well as her legs."Tell you what, I'll buy you lunch, and you can try to convince me why society should turn the other cheek."

"Sorry." She shot him a quick smile and opted for the stairs again.

"I've got a client waiting for me."

"In jail?"

She shrugged. "That's where I find them. Better luck next time, Spelding."

The precinct house was noisy and smelled strongly of stale coffee. Rachel entered with a little shiver. The weatherman had been a little off that day with his promise of Indian summer. A thick, nasty-looking cloud cover was moving in over Manhattan. Rachel was already regretting the fact that she'd grabbed neither coat nor umbrella on her dash out of her apartment that morning.

With any luck, she figured, she'd be back in her office within the hour, and out of the coming rain. She exchanged a few greetings with some of the cops she knew and picked up her visitor's badge at the desk.

"Nicholas LeBeck,"she told the desk sergeant."Attempted burglary."

"Yeah, yeah…" The sergeant flipped through his papers. "Your brother brought him in."

Rachel sighed. Having a brother who was a cop didn't always make life easier. "So I hear. Did he make his phone call?"

"Nope."

"Anyone come looking for him?"

"Nope."

"Great." Rachel shifted her briefcase. "I'd like him brought up."

"You got it. Looks like they've given you another loser, Ray. Take conference room A."

"Thanks." She turned, dodging a swarthy-looking man in handcuffs and the uniformed cop behind him. She managed to snag a cup of coffee, and took it with her into a small room that boasted one barred window, a single long table and four scarred chairs. Taking a seat, she flipped open her briefcase and dug out the paperwork on Nicholas LeBeck.

It seemed her client was nineteen and unemployed and rented a room on the Lower East Side. She let out a little sigh at his list of priors. Nothing cataclysmic, she mused, but certainly enough to show a bent for trouble. The attempted burglary had taken him up a step, and it left her little hope of having him treated as a minor. There had been several thousand dollars' worth of electronic goodies in his sack when Detective Alexi Stanislaski collared him.

She'd be hearing from Alex, no doubt, Rachel thought. There was nothing her brother liked better than to rub her nose in it.

When the door of the conference room opened, she continued to sip her coffee as she took stock of the man being led in by a bored-looking policeman.

Five-ten, she estimated. A hundred and forty. Needed some weight. Dark blond hair, shaggy and nearly shoulder-length. His lips were quirked in what looked like a permanent smirk. It might have been an attractive mouth otherwise. A tiny peridot stud that nearly matched his eyes gleamed in his earlobe. The eyes, too, would have been attractive if not for the bitter anger she read there.

"Thank you, Officer." At her slight nod, the cop uncuffed her client and left them alone."Mr. LeBeck, I'm Rachel Stanislaski, your lawyer."

"Yeah?" He dropped into a chair, then tipped it back. "Last PD I had was short and skinny and had a bald spot. Looks like I got lucky this time."

"On the contrary. You were apprehended crawling out of a broken window of a storeroom of a locked store, with an estimated six thousand dollars' worth of merchandise in your possession."

"The markup on that crap is incredible." It wasn't easy to keep the sneer in place after a miserable night in jail, but Nick had his pride.

"Hey, you got a cigarette on you?"

"No. Mr. LeBeck, I'd like to get your hearing set as soon as possible so that we can arrange for bail. Unless, of course, you prefer to spend your nights in jail."

He shrugged his thin shoulders and tried to look unconcerned. "I'd just as soon not, sweetcakes. I'll leave that to you."

"Fine. And it's Stanislaski," she said mildly. "Ms. Stanislaski. I'm afraid I was only given your file this morning on my way to court, and had time for no more than a brief conversation with the DA assigned to your case. Because of your previous record, and the type of crime involved here, the state had decided to try you as an adult. The arrest was clean, so you won't get a break there."

"Hey, I don't expect breaks."

"People rarely get them." She folded her hands over his file."Let's cut to the chase, Mr. LeBeck. You were caught, and unless you want to weave some fairy tale about seeing the broken window and going in to make a citizen's arrest…"

He had to grin. "Not bad."

"It stinks. You're guilty, and since the arresting officer didn't make any mistakes, and you have an unfortunate list of priors, you're going to pay. How much you pay is going to depend on you."

He continued to rock in his chair, but a fresh line of sweat was sneaking down his spine. A cell. This time they were going to lock him in a cell—not just for a few hours, but for months, maybe years.

"I hear the jails are overcrowded—costs the tax-payers a lot of money. I figure the DA would spring for a deal."

"It was mentioned." Not just bitterness, Rachel realized. Not just anger. She saw fear in his eyes now, as well. He was young and afraid, and she didn't know how much she would be able to help him.

"About fifteen thousand in merchandise was taken out of the store, over and above what was in your possession. You weren't alone in that store, LeBeck. You know it, I know it, the cops know it. And so does the DA.You give them some names, a lead on where that merchandise might be sitting right now, and I can cut you a deal."

His chair banged against the floor."The hell with that. I never said anybody was with me. Nobody can prove it, just like nobody can prove I took more than what I had in my hands when the cop took me."

Rachel leaned forward. It was a subtle move, but one that had Nick's eyes locking on hers. "I'm your lawyer, LeBeck, and the one thing you're not going to do is lie to me.You do, and I'll leave you twisting in the wind, just like your buddies did last night." Her voice was flat, passionless, but he heard the anger simmering beneath. He had to fight to keep from squirming in his chair."You don't want to cut a deal," she continued, "that's your choice. So you'll serve three to five instead of the six months in and two years probation I can get you. Either way, I'll do my job. But don't sit there and insult me by saying you pulled this alone. You're penny-ante, LeBeck." It pleased her to see the anger back in his face. The fear had begun to soften her."Con games and sticky fingers. This is the big leagues. What you tell me stays with me unless you want it different. But you play it straight with me, or I walk."

"You can't walk.You were assigned."

"And I can get reassigned. Then you'll go through this with somebody else." She began to pile papers back in her briefcase."That would be your loss. Because I'm good. I'm real good."

"If you're so good, how come you're working for the PD's office?"

"Let's just say I'm paying off a debt." She snapped her briefcase closed. "So what's it going to be?"

Indecision flickered over his face for just a moment, making him look young and vulnerable, before he shook his head."I'm not going to turn in my friends. No deal."

She let out a short, impatient breath. "You were wearing a Cobra jacket when you were collared."

They'd taken that when they booked him—just as they'd taken his wallet, his belt, and the handful of change in his pocket. "So what?"

"They're going to go looking for your friends, those same friends who are standing back and letting you take the heat all alone. The DA can push this to burglary and hang a twenty-thousand-dollar theft over your head."

"No names," he said again. "No deal."

"Your loyalty's admirable, and misplaced. I'll do what I can to have the charges reduced and have bail set. I don't think it'll be less than fifty thousand. Can you scrape ten percent together?"

Not a chance in hell, he thought, but he shrugged. "I can call in some debts."

"All right, then, I'll get back to you." She rose, then slipped a card out of her pocket. "If you need me before the hearing, or if you change your mind about the deal, give me a call."

She rapped on the door, then swung through when it opened. An arm curled around her waist. She braced instinctively, then let out a little hiss of breath when she looked up and saw her brother grinning at her.

"Rachel, long time no see."

"Yeah, it must be a day and a half."

"Grumpy." His grin widened as he pulled her out of the corridor and into the squad room. "Good sign." His gaze skimmed over her shoulder and locked briefly on LeBeck. "So, they tied you up with that one. Tough break, sweetheart."

She gave him a sisterly elbow in the ribs. "Stop gloating and get me a decent cup of coffee." Resting a hip against the corner of his desk, she rapped her fingertips against her briefcase. Nearby a short, round man was holding a bandanna to his temple and moaning slightly as he gave a statement to another cop. Someone was talking in loud and rapid Spanish. A woman with a bruise on her cheek was weeping and rocking a fat toddler.

The squad room smelled of all of it—the despair, the anger, the boredom. Rachel had always thought that if your senses were very keen you could just barely scent the justice beneath it all. It was very much the same in her offices, a few blocks away.

For a moment, Rachel pictured her sister, Natasha, having breakfast with her family in her pretty kitchen in the big, lovely house in West Virginia. Or opening her colorful toy shop for the day. The image made her smile a bit, just as it did to imagine her brother Mikhail carving something passionate or fanciful out of wood in his sun-washed new studio, perhaps having a hasty cup of coffee with his gorgeous wife before she hurried off to her midtown office.

And here she was, waiting for a cup of what would certainly be very bad coffee in a downtown precinct house filled with the sight and smells and sounds of misery.

Alex handed her the coffee, then eased down on the desk beside her.

"Thanks." She sipped, winced, and watched a couple of hookers strut out of the holding cells. A tall, bleary-eyed man with a night's worth of stubble shifted around them and followed a uniform through the door that led down to the cells. Rachel gave a little sigh.

"What's wrong with us, Alexi?"

He grinned again and slipped an arm around her. "What? Just because we like slogging through the dregs for a living, for little pay and less gratitude? Nothing. Not a thing."

She chuckled and fueled her system with the motor oil disguised as coffee. "At least you just got a promotion. Detective Stanislaski."

"Can't help it if I'm good. You, on the other hand, are spinning your wheels putting criminals back on the streets I'm risking life and limb to keep clean."

She snorted, scowling at him over the brim of the paper cup. "Most of the people I represent aren't doing anything more than trying to survive."

"Sure—by stealing, cheating, and assaulting."

Her temper began to heat. "I went to court this morning to represent an old man who'd copped some disposable razors. A real desperate case, that one. I guess they should have locked him up and thrown away the key."

"So it's okay to steal as long as what you take isn't particularly valuable?"

"He needed help, not a jail sentence."

"Like that creep you got off last month who terrorized two old shopkeepers, wrecked their store and stole the pitiful six hundred in the till?"

She'd hated that one, truly hated it. But the law was clear, and had been made for a reason. "Look, you guys blew that one. The arresting officer didn't read him his rights in his native language or arrange for a translator. My client barely understood a dozen words of English." She shook her head before Alex could jump into one of his more passionate arguments."I don't have time to debate the law with you. I need to ask you about Nicholas LeBeck."

"What about him? You got the report."

"You were the arresting officer."

"Yeah—so? I was on my way home, and I happened to see the broken window and the light inside. When I went to investigate, I saw the perpetrator coming through the window carrying a sackful of electronics. I read him his rights and brought him in."

"What about the others?"

Alex shrugged and finished off the last couple of swallows of Rachel's coffee. "Nobody around but LeBeck."

Two great heroes in one great re-release!
By Paper or Kindle
I've been a fan of the Stanislaski clan since 1990, when the first volume appeared. But those old mass market issues are yellowed and cracking with age and re-readings, so I was thrilled when they were just released in a larger, easier-to-read format.

If you haven't met the Stanislaskis yet, you're in for a treat. The warm, loving clan enfolds all newcomers to its Ukrainian heart, and who can resist? This volume contains the 3rd and 4th installments of the family saga, though they can be read as stand-alones. "Falling for Rachel" has that crisp Public Defender giving her Ukrainian best to Nick LeBeck, a troubled teenager, and his fabulously sexy older step-brother, Zack Muldoon, a former sailor who runs a classy bar on the Lower East Side. Wanting what's best for the boy inevitably leads to what's best for these two stormy lovers. "Convincing Alex" has NYC's sexiest detective up against one of Nora Roberts's most wonderfully quirky heroines, a soap opera writer with a knack for trouble.

Once you meet a Stanislaski, you're going to want to meet them all - and you'll be well rewarded for doing so. These books are among Roberts's best, and since she's written almost 200 by now, that's saying a lot!

Super series for those who love romance and fast paced action mystery.
By Joanna Mcginn
This series is the best of the mystery/romance genre. I can hardly wait for the next one to come along. It would be a great idea that when all the deaths are solved.... and the rookies are scattered into other departments in Arizona but they work together to search and find the elusive murderer who fled Desert Springs and escaped to parts unknown. In each book, you are put right into the excitement... the murders are in the early action and not 'off stage' where someone finds the body.

Well written and accurate. I plan on buying them as they are released.

Soft clawing on the back patio door made Lincoln Ivy put the steaming pan of cheesy chicken casserole down. Turning from the stove, he saw Madeline's paw lift for another series of attention-getting noises. Tap, tap, tap. Toy hamburger in mouth, tail wagging, nose smudging the glass and breath fogging the early-autumn air, her sweet brown eyes zeroed in on him with unabashed excitement. Chuckling, Lincoln walked to the door. She was a beautiful Labrador retriever. Show quality.

"Hey, there, girl," he said in greeting after he opened the door. The dog began squeaking her toy and bounding all around him. She squeaked a tune using her jaws, her eyes playful and looking up at him.

He got in a pat on her head before she trotted over to the pantry and sat, her white tail thumping the floor, whites of her eyes flashing in an upturned plea and cheeks wrinkled around the burger.

"Yeah, you're adorable." He went to her and got a biscuit from the pantry.

Madeline dropped the stuffed burger and chomped for the treat.

"Be nice," he admonished. "Don't be such a pig."

The tip of her tail wiggled faster.

"Nice." He slowly brought the treat closer.

Madeline's eyes blinked as though communicating her deep gratitude as she gently took the biscuit. Then she hungrily crunched away. It was devoured in seconds.

The gate next door was broken, and Madeline could open the latch on his. Over the past couple months, her visits had been sporadic. But this past week they had become an everyday occurrence. She wasn't his dog. She belonged to the mean lady next door.

Well, he used to think she was mean. A few things had changed recently.

He crouched in front of the still-sitting dog. "You know, for having such a troublemaker for an owner, you sure are a good girl."

Madeline gave him one of her white paws and stretched her head to lick him. He moved just in time to avoid a wet kiss on his mouth.

"Thanks, but you're taken. I don't cheat."

He scratched her ears as his doorbell rang. Right on schedule. Remy Lang was here to get her dog. Sighing, he stood and went to the door, Madeline trotting beside him.

He opened the door. A siren of a redhead stood there with a humble face framed by long, wavy hair. Beautiful face. He wasn't sure if it was just him or if everyone couldn't stop staring at her whenever she came into view. She was in light blue jeans and a Stanford University sweatshirt. No makeup, but her striking green eyes didn't need any. "Uh…is Maddie here?"

She shifted from one foot to the other, stuffing her hands in her pockets. Awkward. She'd been a bitch when he'd first met her. He'd gone over to her house after he heard her fighting with a man. The man had hit her. Lincoln had beaten him for it, and she'd been angry… at Lincoln. Ever since then, she'd been uncomfortable in her own skin around him. She never could get away fast enough. But he always sensed her desire to blurt out an excuse for her behavior. And every time something stopped her. Fear.

What was she so afraid of? He found himself wondering more and more.

"Uh," she stammered again, this time leaning to see around him.

Madeline had gone into the kitchen and sat by the pantry again.

He swung the door open wider. "Sorry. Why don't you come in for a while?" Maybe this time he'd get some information out of her.

"Maddie," Remy called, stepping inside.

The dog stayed there, tail thumping, panting happily.

"Her name tag says Madeline." This was the first time he'd heard her call the dog by name. Until now, she'd only referred to Maddie as "my dog," and all she ever said were things like "sorry to have bothered you" to him, or "come on" to her dog. Whenever he tried to talk to her, she always said she "had to get going. Bye." Awkward and embarrassed. Why had she been angry with him for beating up the guy who'd hit her? She was afraid of that man, of course, but Lincoln wanted to know the reason.

"I call her Maddie most of the time." She bent and patted her thigh, a long, lean thigh. "Come on, Maddie."

"Do you want me to fix your gate?" he asked.

"No. Maddie!" she snapped, in a hurry to get away.

The dog's ears slumped, and her eyes drooped. Getting Maddie out of his house worked better when Remy waited on the front porch and he brought the dog to her.

"Come here, girl," Lincoln coaxed.

Maddie's ears perked, and the smile returned to her face as she trotted over to him.

Remy gaped at him with the hint of a smile. "What have you done to my dog?"

Seeing her begin to relax, he patted Maddie. "She's a great dog."

Remy crouched, and Maddie went to her, sitting before her with that tiny wiggle of her tail and going in for a few licks. Remy sank her fingers into the fur of her chest.

"Yeah, she is." The soft smile that shaped her lips captivated Lincoln.

When she looked up from Maddie's love-drunk eyes, she caught him staring at her. As her gaze took in his chest and arms and then returned to his eyes, he burned.

"Ah…" She stood. "I should probably get going."

Lincoln was a little disconcerted over his reaction, as well. A familiar, old pain overtook him for a few seconds before he could control it, hide it away where he always did, safely out of mind.

Remy didn't move for the door. She seemed on the verge of saying something that was hard for her to say. "I've… I've been meaning to…apologize for the way we met."

Finally. He waited for her to go on.

"Wade. That whole.thing."

"Is he your boyfriend?" he asked. "No!" she answered instantly and adamantly. "He's…sort of a friend."

"Sort of?"

She waved her hands and then let them hang at her sides. "I thought he was a friend when I first met him. He turned out to be something else."

Lincoln nodded. "Why did he hit you?"

"It's complicated," she said. "I don't expect you to understand."

How could he when she wasn't telling him anything? Did she have something to hide? Or was she just embarrassed? The man wasn't her boyfriend. "Who is he?"

She waved her hands again, a poor disguise for her inner turmoil. "Nobody. I just wanted to apologize, and also to thank you for what you did. Even though it didn't seem like I was appreciative, I was, okay?"

"Okay." Had fear compelled her to retaliate against Lincoln that day? She may have been afraid of what the man would have done had she not taken his side. "If there's anything I can do to help, just let me know. I'm right next door."

She smiled. "Yeah. I know." She met his gaze awhile longer.

This was a lot different than the first time they'd met. And the most they'd ever spoken.

An uncomfortable silence passed. She glanced down his body, checking him out, and then grew serious.

Maddie nudged Lincoln's hand, and he pet her head.

"Your leg is better," Remy said.

The first time he'd met her he'd been on crutches.

"Yes."

"Did you break it?"

She hadn't taken the time to ask before. She hadn't taken the time to make conversation at all. "No." He hesitated, wondering if he should say. "Actually, I was shot."

She went a little still and then asked, "How? Why?"

He contemplated not telling her. But he wondered if he told her, would she open up to him about the man named Wade? "A friend of mine got into some trouble, and I got in the way." He grinned. "I can't seem to stay away from trouble."

She caught his meaning, that he'd gotten into her trouble. "Must be some trouble."

"At the risk of sounding like I played a role in an action movie, my friend came to me for help, and things fell apart. My sister was here at the time, and an arms dealer tried to kidnap her to use against my friend. I was shot, and my friend saved my sister. The dealer's in prison now." He didn't get into the rest of the story, how Braden McCrae and Arizona had unraveled the mystery, which had included the kidnapping of Braden's sister and stepsister and attempts to steal weapons technology from the company where Braden worked.

"An arms dealer, huh? What are you, some kind of Homeland Security agent?"

"No. I teach martial arts." He left out the other detail that he was also a bail enforcement agent. He didn't know why. It was just a feeling. It was also something he didn't really share with many people.

"I have a tough guy for a neighbor," she teased, but he could tell she liked it. He wasn't a cop, but he wasn't afraid of bad guys. He enjoyed solving the mystery of tracking the fugitives and, even more, the satisfaction of bringing them in.

"And who do I have for a neighbor?" he deliberately asked.

Between them, Maddie sat patiently, her head moving from one to the other as they spoke.

"I just got a job at a microchip corporation. I'm an HR assistant."

A human-resources assistant? He'd recently learned the house next door was a rental. Where had she gotten the money to afford it? This wasn't the most expensive neighborhood in Denver, but it was pushing the milliondollar mark. She may have gotten a deal on hers since it was in need of renovation, but still. How much did an HR assistant make? It couldn't be that much. Plus she had a loaded Audi Q5 Prestige in her garage. Pricey for an HR assistant.

His curiosity grew. "Where did you move from?"

A flicker of reluctance crossed her pretty eyes. "California. Near L.A."

Vague. "What brought you here?"

The reluctance he'd seen was gone now, and in its place was a brick wall. She shrugged. "I don't have any family. It was time for a change. I've always liked it here."

"No family?" Not even a sister or an aunt?

"No." Her head lowered. "My mother raised me, and I never knew my dad. My mother died in a car accident a few years ago."

"I'm sorry to hear that. You must have had a tough time."

"I learned to take care of myself. Mom had life insurance. That helped. I used some of it to go to college."

College? Her eyes flashed to his when she realized her slip. She hadn't meant to tell him that. "I have an English degree. What can you do with that, right?" She half laughed.

Although she quipped, he could see she was lying.

"When did you graduate?" He kept a light tone. People relaxed more when all they were doing was answering harmless questions.

"Six years ago. You?"

"I didn't go to college."

"Just martial arts school, huh?"

"Yes. And I love to read."

A firecracker of a smile burst on her face. "Me, too. Biographies, mostly."

Something in common. "Mysteries for me. Some nonfiction."

"Do you have a family?"

She must know he did. She'd seen his mother stop by. The way she asked said it was important to her. Family.

"I have a huge family," he stated hesitantly. "There are eight of us, and our parents live in California. Most of the time."

"I see a limo drive up every once in a while."

"That's my mom. Dad sometimes comes with her." He watched her process that. His parents had money.

"Ivy." She nodded. "I didn't piece it together until now." She glanced around his house. "You live modestly for someone who has such wealthy and well-known parents."

She was completely guileless as she made the observation. Nothing changed other than the wonder of discovery. She didn't become flirtatious as most women did, thinking they'd struck gold. He could recognize the shift immediately. Flirting went into overdrive. Efforts to impress, to latch on to him became nauseating. But not with this woman.

"What's it like being the son of a famous movie producer?"

"I'm not the one who's famous, so most of the time it's like being part of any other normal family." And he preferred it that way. "The press can get annoying."

"I can't imagine." A moment passed, and they shared a look. "Well. We should get going." She looked down at Maddie, who still sat patiently. "You're never this good with me. What's gotten into you?"

Maddie lifted her paw and rested it on her leg.

Remy laughed and shook her head. "I hope you don't mind her coming over here all the time. I haven't been able to get someone over to fix my gate."

"Like I said, I could fix it for you, except then I wouldn't get visits from Maddie." He pet the dog's head, and she stood to come closer for more attention.

Still smiling, Remy moved toward the door and patted her leg. "Come on, Maddie. Ready for dinner?"

The promise of dinner brought Maddie following her out the door.

His curiosity grew over his new neighbor. She didn't have any visitors and kept to herself. Lincoln was social with all the neighbors. They all loved having him nearby and frequently invited him to barbecues and dinners and holiday parties. Remy had too much to hide. At least it appeared that way.

Remy Lang realized she was still smiling after she went back to her house to feed Maddie. Drat. That wasn't in the plan. She had too much to lose to risk engaging in a relationship with a martial arts instructor. Her neighbor. Her big, strong neighbor who'd come to her rescue. She had to admit, having a man like that next door had made her feel safe. But it was foolish to feel that way. She couldn't share her past-particularly Wade Nelson's role in it-with anyone. Her survival depended on it.

Wade was not what she'd expected. When this all had started, she'd thought she could depend on him to help her, but she could not. Since then, she had taken matters into her own hands. She was close to resolving everything. Soon, she'd have her life back. If Wade didn't ruin it for her first. He'd caught on to what she was doing, and now he was angry. That was why he'd hit her. And Lincoln had seen it. That scared her more than anything. What would Wade do? He knew too much about her. She'd trusted the wrong man. And now Lincoln had gotten involved.

Sitting on her off-white Broyhill sofa, she turned on the big-screen television. Maddie came into the room, licking her mouth and hopping up onto the sofa beside her, smelling like dog food. Remy loved that.

The dog curled up beside her and lifted her head to gaze up at her. Talk about a heartbreaker.

"Oh, yeah, Maddie girl, you're my dog again. Your new boyfriend isn't here, and now I'm all you've got."

Loads of emotion and danger
By A. Richard
The Ivy Avengers miniseries is about a group of siblings with very different personalities and a Hollywood connection. Occasionally one of them becomes caught up in a troubling situation, and this time it is the oldest brother who finds his life turned upside down because of his protective nature. Two people will then have to let go of the past to ever find happiness plus make decisive choices to stay alive. Jennifer Morey gives her couple plenty to prevail over as they question previous decisions and ponder what type of future they want. ARMED AND FAMOUS is emotionally touching plus filled with dicey risks.

After a personal incident intensely affected Lincoln Ivy, he became a bounty hunter. Although he comes from a very wealthy family, he still wants to work and receives great satisfaction when he captures a fugitive. Lincoln also feels the need to defend anyone in jeopardy, and it is very clear his neighbor has some huge problems. Unfortunately, she gives him no explanation for why a man harassed her and avoids him if at all possible. But they keep coming in contact with each other because her dog repeatedly sneaks over to his house and must be retrieved.

Remy Lang has her reasons for not telling her handsome neighbor any of her secrets. She knows her life is in danger and hopes to find a solution without involving anyone else. When she is once again threatened, Lincoln becomes entangled in the situation and there is no easy way for either of them to escape the peril. Remy comes to realize he might be the only one who can keep her safe, but she does not know if all her secrets can ever be revealed to her defender.

Dangerous physical threats and conflicting emotional confrontations can be frequently found in ARMED AND FAMOUS. From where a risk toward Lincoln and Remy would come is often not known, and some of the incidents they must face are frightening because of uncertainties. What has brought this recurring danger into her life is believably depicted, and I was certainly shocked by several of the gradually exposed facts. This couple had to do lots of digging to find the truth of what was actually happening and who was involved.

As these two look for clues, they have many heart-to-heart conversations, where questions are asked but answers are not always forthcoming. Both Lincoln and Remy have suffered a distressing episode in the past, and these events greatly influence their current lives in numerous ways. While they would like to find someone special to love, each of them has much to overcome before they can move forward. Ms. Morey gives them some realistic problems, and finding a solution is not without plenty of ups and downs in their relationship. There is much sexual tension between Lincoln and Remy, causing the mounting desire to be on their minds just as much as the ever-present danger. Maddie is the dog who brings them together so many times at first, and all her amusing antics definitely made me smile. There are still many more brothers and sisters who have a story to tell, and I hope they all get the chance. ARMED AND FAMOUS is packed with lots of danger and one mystery after another.

Disappointing, not worth the read. Needs editing
By Hope This Helps
Rating 1.5 __ Contains graphic sexual content.
Note: Stand alone read. 2nd in the Ivy Avengers series.

SKIP IT! Engaging storyline and a good supporting cast, including a lovable dog. HOWEVER the hero is mediocre, the heroine is secretive and makes stupid choices, the bad guys are common, ruthless thugs, the constant "angst-think" is annoying, and there is a lot of lust, not romance. But, the major problem is the writing is wordy, contrived, fragmented, obvious, and just drags in places, which makes the book painful to stick with.

THE STORY follows HR representative, Sabrina Tierney. Sabrina discovers a gun trafficking ring at the retail gun company where she works and purposefully put herself in the middle, by trying to find evidence to expose the mastermind. In the process, her colleague/friend is killed and she is framed for his murder. She flees under an assumed name and winds up living next door to martial arts instructor and bounty hunter, Lincoln Ivy, who comes to her rescue when several gunmen try to kill her. Then, while evading the police and the killer's henchmen, they begin their own investigation to clear her name (bpl).

OVERALL, not a bad plot, but no mystery and no romance. Just a lot of lust and stupidity.

The IVY AVENGERS includes, Front Page Affair, Armed and Famous, and One Secret Night.

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, R. C. Ryan, or L. Wilde. For good mystery/suspense writers you might try J. D. Robb, D. Stabenow, M. Ferris, S. W. Albert, Gayle Wilson, Julie Miller, Amanda Stevens, or B.J Daniels.

Do not waste your money. Not even worth the two dollars I spent. Could not even get through the first half before I discovered male and female leads were both written as idiots. Absolutely nothing to like about either one of them. Can't tell you if they have a happily ever after because could not stand either one of them. Need to have something to like about the characters but there was absolutely nothing to like about Lincoln and Sabrina. Not worth investing any time on this book!
