She knew it was crazy. That was what she liked best about it. It was crazy, ridiculous, impractical and totally out of character. And she was having the time of her life. From the balcony of her hotel suite Rebecca could see the sweep of the beach, the glorious blue of the Ionian Sea, blushed now with streaks of rose from the setting sun.

Corfu. Even the name sounded mysterious, exciting, glamorous. And she was here, really here. Practical, steady-as-a-rock Rebecca Malone, who had never traveled more than five hundred miles from Philadelphia, was in Greece. Not just in Greece, she thought with a grin, but on the exotic island of Corfu, in one of the most exclusive resorts in Europe.

First-class, she thought as she leaned out to let the sweet breeze ruffle over her face. As long as it lasted, she was going first-class.

Her boss had thought she was suffering from temporary insanity. Edwin McDowell of McDowell, Jableki and Kline was never going to understand why a promising young CPA would resign from her position with one of the top accounting firms in Philadelphia. She'd made a good salary, she'd enjoyed excellent benefits, and she'd even had a small window in her office.

Friends and associates had wondered if she'd suffered a breakdown. After all, it wasn't normal, and it certainly wasn't Rebecca's style to quit a solid, well-paying job without the promise of a better one.

But she'd given her two weeks' notice, cleared out her desk and had cheerfully walked out into the world of the unemployed.

When she'd sold her condo and then in one frantic week, auctioned off every possession she owned—every stick of furniture, every pot and pan and appliance— they'd been certain she'd gone over the edge.

Rebecca had never felt saner.

She owned nothing that didn't fit in a suitcase. She no longer had any tax-deferred investments or retirement plans. She'd cashed in her certificates of deposit, and the home entertainment center she'd thought she couldn't live without was now gracing someone else's home.

It had been more than six weeks since she'd even looked at an adding machine.

For the first—and perhaps the only—time in her life, she was totally free. There were no responsibilities, no pressures, no hurried gulps of cold coffee. She hadn't packed an alarm clock. She no longer owned one. Crazy? No. Rebecca shook her head and laughed into the breeze. For as long as it lasted, she was going to grab life with both hands and see what it had to offer.

Aunt Jeannie's death had been her turning point. It had come so suddenly, so unexpectedly, leaving Rebecca without any family. Aunt Jeannie had worked hard for most of her sixty-five years, always punctual, always responsible. Her position as head librarian had been her whole life. She'd never missed a day, never failed to do her duty. Her bills had been paid on time. Her promises had always been kept.

More than once Rebecca had been told she took after her mother's older sister. She was twenty-four, but she was—had been—as solid and sturdy as her maiden aunt. Two months into retirement, two months after dear Aunt Jeannie began to make plans to travel, to enjoy the rewards she'd worked so hard to earn, she was gone.

After Rebecca's grief had come the anger, then the frustration, then slowly, the realization that she was traveling the same straight road. She worked, she slept, she fixed well-balanced meals that she ate alone. She had a small circle of friends who knew she could be counted on in a crisis. Rebecca would always find the best and most practical answer. Rebecca would never drop her own problems in your lap—because she didn't have any. Rebecca, bless her, was a port in any storm.

She hated it, and she'd begun to hate herself. She had to do something.

And she was doing it.

It wasn't running away as much as it was breaking free. All her life she'd done what was expected of her and tried to make as few waves as possible while doing it. All through school a crushing shyness had kept her more comfortable with her books than with other teenagers. In college a need to succeed and justify her aunt's faith had locked her tightly into her studies.

She had always been good with figures—logical, thorough, patient. It had been easy, perhaps too easy, to pour herself into that one area, because there, and really only there, had she felt confident.

Now she was going to discover Rebecca Malone. In the weeks or months of freedom she had, she wanted to learn everything there was to know about the woman within. Perhaps there wasn't a butterfly inside the cocoon she'd wrapped herself in so comfortably, but whatever she found—whoever she found—Rebecca hoped she would enjoy her, like her, perhaps even respect her.

When the money ran out, she'd get another job and go back to being plain, practical Rebecca. Until that time she was rich, rootless and ready for surprises.

She was also hungry.

Stephen saw her the moment she entered the restaurant. It wasn't that she was particularly striking. Beautiful women passed through the world every day and they usually warranted a glance. But there was something about the way this one walked, as if she were ready for anything, even looking forward to it. He stopped, and because business was slow at this hour he took a second, longer look.

She was tall for a woman, and more angular than slender. Her skin was pale, and that made him think she had only just arrived at the resort or was shy of the sun. The white sundress that left her shoulders and back bare accented the lack of color and gave dramatic contrast to her short cap of raven hair.

She paused, then seemed to take a deep breath. Stephen could almost hear her satisfied sigh. Then she smiled at the headwaiter, and followed him to her table, tossing her head back, so that her hair, which she wore arrow-straight, swung away from her chin.

A nice face, Stephen concluded. Bright, intelligent, eager. Especially the eyes. They were pale, an almost translucent gray. But there was nothing pale in their expression. She smiled at the waiter again, then laughed and looked around the restaurant. She looked as if she'd never been happier in her life.

She saw him. When Rebecca's gaze first skimmed over the man leaning against the bar, her automatic shyness kicked in and had her looking away. Attractive men had stared at her before—though it wasn't exactly a daily event. She'd never been able to handle it with the aplomb—or even cynicism—of most of her contemporaries. To cover her momentary embarrassment, she lifted her menu.

He hadn't meant to linger more than a few moments longer, but the impulse came suddenly. Stephen flicked a hand at the waiter and had him scurrying over, nodding quickly at Stephen's murmured request and hurrying off. When he returned it was to deliver a bottle of champagne to Rebecca's table.

"Compliments of Mr. Nickodemus."

"Oh." Rebecca followed the waiter's gaze over to the man by the bar. "Well, I—" She brought herself up short before she could stammer. A sophisticated woman wouldn't stutter over a gift of champagne, she reminded herself. She'd accept it graciously, with dignity. And maybe—if she wasn't a complete fool—she'd relax enough to flirt with the man who offered it.

Stephen watched the expressions pass across her face. Fascinating, he mused, and realized that the vague boredom he'd been feeling had vanished. When she lifted her head and smiled at him, he had no idea that her heart was pounding. He saw only a casual invitation, and he answered it.

He wasn't just attractive, Rebecca realized as he crossed to her table. He was gorgeous. Eye-popping, mouth-dropping gorgeous. She had an image of Apollo and ancient Greek warriors. Thick blond hair streaked by the sun fell over the collar of his shirt. Smooth, bronzed skin was marred—and somehow enhanced— by a faint scar under his jawline. A strong jaw, she thought. A strong face, with the darkest, deepest blue eyes she'd ever seen.

"Good evening, I'm Stephen Nickodemus." His voice wasn't accented, it was rounded, rich. He might have come from anywhere. Perhaps it was that, more than anything else, that intrigued her.

Lecturing herself on poise and image, she lifted her hand. "Hello. I'm Rebecca, Rebecca Malone." She felt a quick flutter when he brushed his lips over her knuckles. Feeling foolish, she drew her hand away and balled it in her lap. "Thank you for the champagne."

"It seemed to suit your mood." He studied her, wondering why he was getting such a mix of signals. "You are by yourself?"

"Yes." Perhaps it was a mistake to admit it, but if she was going to live life to the fullest she had to take some risks. The restaurant wasn't crowded, but they were hardly alone. Take the plunge, she told herself, and tried another smile. "The least I can do is offer you a glass."

Stephen took the seat across from her, brushing the waiter aside to pour the wine himself. "You are American?"

"It shows."

"No. Actually, I thought you were French until you spoke."

"Did you?" That pleased her. "I've just come from Paris." She had to force herself not to touch her hair. She'd had it cut, with trepidation and delight, in a French salon.

Stephen touched his glass to hers. Her eyes bubbled with life as cheerfully as the wine. "Business?"

"No, just pleasure." What a marvelous word, she thought. Pleasure. "It's a wonderful city."

"Yes. Do you go often?"

Rebecca smiled into her glass. "Not often enough. Do you?"

"From time to time."

She nearly sighed at that. Imagine anyone speaking of going to Paris "from time to time." "I nearly stayed longer, but I'd promised myself Greece."

So she was alone, restless, and on the move. Perhaps that was why she had appealed to him, because he was, too. "Is Corfu your first stop?"

"Yes." She sipped at her drink. A part of her still believed it was all a dream. Greece, champagne, the man. "It's beautiful. Much more beautiful than I imagined it could be."

"It's your first trip, then?" He couldn't have said why that pleased him. "How long do you stay?"

"As long as I like." She grinned, savoring the feeling of freedom. "And you?"

He lifted his glass. "Longer, I think, than I had planned." When the waiter appeared at his side, Stephen handed over the menu, then spoke to him in soft, quick Greek. "If you don't object, I'd like to guide you through your first meal on the island."

The old Rebecca would have been too nervous to sit through a meal with a stranger. The new Rebecca took a second, deeper sip of champagne. "I'd love it. Thank you."

It was easy. Easy to sit, to laugh, to sample new and exotic tastes. She forgot that he was a stranger, forgot that the world she was living in now was only temporary. They didn't speak of anything important—only of Paris, and the weather, and the wine. Still, she was sure it was the most interesting conversation of her life. He looked at her when he spoke to her, looked at her as though he were delighted to spend an hour talking of nothing. The last man she'd had dinner with had wanted her to give him a discount when she did his taxes.

Stephen wasn't asking her for anything more than her company for dinner. When he looked at her it seemed unlikely that he'd care if she knew how to fill out Schedule C.

When he suggested a walk along the beach, she agreed without a qualm. What better way to end an evening than a walk in the moonlight?

"I was looking out at this from my window just before dinner." Rebecca stepped out of her shoes, then dangled them from her fingers as she walked. "I didn't think it could look more beautiful than it did at sunset."

"The sea changes, like a woman, in the light." He paused to touch a flame to the end of a slim cigar. "So men are drawn to her."

"Are you? Drawn to the sea?"

"I've spent my time on her. I fished in these waters as a boy."

She'd learned at dinner that he'd grown up traveling the islands with his father. "It must have been exciting, moving from place to place, seeing new things almost every day."

He shrugged. He'd never been sure whether the restlessness had been born in him or had been a product of his upbringing. "It had its moments."

"I love to travel." Laughing, she tossed her shoes aside, then stepped into the surf. The champagne was making her head swim and the moonlight felt as soft as rain. "I adore it." She laughed again when the spray washed up to dampen her skirts. The Ionian Sea. She was standing in it. "On a night like this I think I'll never go home."

She looked so vibrant, so alive, standing in the surf with her white skirts billowing. "Where's home?"

She glanced over her shoulder. The flirtatious look was totally unplanned and completely devastating. "I haven't decided. I want to swim." On impulse, she dived into the surf.

Stephen's heart stopped when she disappeared. He'd already kicked off his shoes and started forward when she rose up again. For a second time, his heart stopped.

She was laughing, her face lifted to the moonlight. Water cascaded from her hair, from her skin. The drops that clung to her were the only jewels she wore. Beautiful? No, she wasn't beautiful. She was electric.

"It's wonderful. Cool and soft and wonderful."

With a shake of his head, he stepped in far enough to take her hand and pull her toward shore. She was a little mad, perhaps, but engagingly so. "Are you always so impulsive?"

"I'm working on it. Aren't you?" She combed her hand through her dripping hair. "Or do you always send champagne to strange women?"

"Either way I answer that could be trouble. Here." He shrugged out of his jacket and draped it over her shoulders. Unframed, washed clean, her face glowed in the moonlight. There was a graceful kind of strength in it, to the sweep of cheekbone, the slightly pointed chin. Delicate— except for the eyes. One look there showed power, a power that was still. "You're irresistible, Rebecca."

She stared at him, confused all over again, as he gathered the neck of the jacket close around her throat. "I'm wet," she managed.

"And beautiful." With his hands still on the jacket, he brought her toward him. "And fascinating."

That made her laugh again. "I don't think so, but thanks. I'm glad you sent me the champagne and guided me through my first meal." Her nerves began to jangle. His eyes stayed on hers, journeying only once to her mouth, which was still damp from the sea. Their bodies were close, close enough to brush. Rebecca began to shiver, and she knew it had nothing to do with wet clothes and the breeze.

"I should go in… change my dress."

Not so much
By Cheryl Jimerson
It seemed like an early Harliquin novel. Too predictable. Two small stories in one. I thought Nora Roberts books were supposed to be above average.

Being able to change who you are and no one gets hurt from it is awesome. Once again
By Nancy M. Wood
To be able to reinvent yourself and be someone else, but still be you. Totally enjoyable. We all suffer from identity issues and many of us have had this fantasy. Being able to change who you are and no one gets hurt from it is awesome. Once again, Nora Roberts, takes us on a journey we all have dreamt of at least once.

From Publishers Weekly
Following Dead Before Morning, the second Inspector Rafferty/Sergeant Llewellyn mystery successfully brings the English duo together again when a woman is found suffocated in an Essex field. Barbara Longman, tireless worker for ecological causes and a good mother, is not your average murder victim. So, at first, Rafferty links her death to unsolved serial killings in a neighboring district. But then clues begin to point towards one of her family-or at least someone with intimate details about her personal life. Rafferty, nicknamed the British Columbo, and his more educated sidekick Llewellyn closely question the prominent family with which Longman lived. Interspersed with Rafferty's keen musings and tentative deductions about the case is the growing connection between him and his sergeant as Llewellyn begins to get serious about Rafferty's cousin, whom he is dating.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Yorkshire Inspector Joe Rafferty's original hope that Barbara Longman was smothered among the wildflowers in Tiffey Meadow by whoever has already killed two women across the river in Suffolk--somebody he won't have the primary responsibility for catching--is dashed when the Suffolk police get two confessions, but not three, from their suspect, confirming Rafferty's suspicion that his murder is the work of a copycat. Who lured the ecology-minded victim out to the meadow with a phony call warning that neighboring farmer Cyril Thomson was threatening to plow up the wildflowers? Rafferty and his obtrusively well read sergeant, David Llewellyn, can't believe that Barbara's ineffectual husband, Henry Longman, has the gumption for murder. But how about the other, more substantial members of her family circle: Henry's acid-tongued first wife Anne, who saw Barbara as an obstacle to her getting custody of her son Maxie away from Henry? Anne's younger brother Charles Shore, inheritor of the family business, whom Barbara first accused of dumping pollutants into the river and then started an affair with? Charles's well-kept wife, Hilary, a faded actress who'd just told meek Henry that his wife was sleeping with his boss? Competent and colorless, with the emphasis on the he-said/she- said of the suspects' alibis, until the denouement, when the grisly absurdity of the killer's motive gives the book a perverse distinction that sets it quite apart from Dead Before Morning (1993). -- Copyright ©1994, Kirkus Associates, LP. Great British Police Procedural
By Kae
I downloaded the eBook edition of Down Among the Dead Men after reading a post by author, Geraldine Evans on KindleBoards. I like Police Procedural mysteries, and this one was spot on (couldn't help myself, since this is set in England)!

In this second of the Rafferty & Llewellyn crime novels, the team investigates Barbara Longman's murder. Her body is found in a deserted field of wild flowers, and the woman is related to an influential family in the Essex community. Multiple suspects from within the family keep our two detectives taking interviews in Essex and London, and piecing together what could have happened.

Told from Rafferty's point of view (third person), we see the crime investigation and also get Rafferty's take on the family, his partner, and life in general. It's sometimes whimsical, and always presents a great picture of the characters. Rafferty knows he's considered the "Columbo" of his precinct, and he constantly chafes under Llewellyn's garrulous erudition about anything and everything.

I was quite take with the language and writing in this book, such as, "... swallowing statements whole generally caused investigatory indigestion. He chewed over what Henry had said..." Great phrasing throughout, which shows the thoughtful writing of this book. This type of writing doesn't occur with a dashed-off story.

The series originally was published more than a decade ago in hardback editions from Severn House. I hope more of Evans' titles end up on Kindle, and I will look for older editions at my Public Library.

Down Among the Dead Men is a nice change of pace
By Amazon Customer
Down Among the Dead Men is a nice change of pace, with enough English country touches to make for a rich and different atmosphere, and the relationship between the two detectives is both endearing and realistic.

That said, the suspense is slow to build and could have done with more of a threat of future deaths, while I can’t say that I worked out who the murderer was that could be because I skimmed the middle half of the book to get there.

Desperately needs editing
By Suzanne S. Barnhill
I would love to give this book five stars. I really like the characters of Joseph Rafferty and Dafyd Llewellyn and the growing chemistry between them, but as a copy editor I find the poor editing a strong deterrent. Evans writes very well, so it is a shame that she did not spend the relative pittance it would have cost her to have the book reviewed by a professional copy editor, who would have marshaled her randomly sprinkled commas into the places where they belong (NOT between subject and verb!).

Sea Swept
By Kelly
Cameron Quinn is at the top of his game! He is a champion at his first love racing boats, famous, and a different woman every night. His world comes crashing down around him when he is notified his adopted father, Ray, is dying from injuries received in an accident. Cameron arrives in time to say goodbye along with his brothers Phillip and Ethan. It is then they find out that they have another brother named Seth. Since they were all adopted, they all come together to make sure Seth is taken care of.

Anna Spinelli is responsible for Seth as his caseworker. She is a no nonsense take no prisoners type of woman. Anna is straightforward and doesn't play any games. She knew that mixing business with pleasure was a no-no but she couldn't deny her attraction to Cameron.

Cameron decides to move home to provide the stable environment Seth needs. Phillip, Ethan, and Cameron have never raised children before, and they have no idea what to do in many circumstances. Anna is sympathetic to them, and helps them as much as possible. As Cameron and Anna grow closer, they must find a way to balance all the needs of this family.

This is a wonderful start to the new series. Each of the brothers is very different, and it is a struggle for them to learn to be a family unit. There are some very funny antics, and some very touching heartwarming moments. Cameron and Anna are good together, and have great chemistry.

An awesome start!!!
By A Customer
This is the first book in the trilogy about the Quinn brothers. SeaSwept introduces you to the Quinn family and in particular, Cameron Quinn. The male characters are very strong, sensitive men with an incredible sense of family morals.
I thought this was a great story, the plot was detailed and very strong characters! The story revolves around Cameron Quinn and Anna Spinelli. Cameron comes home from Europe after hearing of his foster father's illness. His dad dies and the brothers are left to care for a 10-year old boy. Anna is the boy's social worker assigned to the case. Her and Cameron fall in love over the course of the novel.
This is story of strength and love and of the ties or fathers and sons and brothers. Each brother must come to face their past demons and make their way into the future and join together which will affect the future of their youngest brother, Seth.
It is an awesome read and the setting in an eastern seaboard town.

Swept away by Sea Swept
By apoem
I LOVE Nora Roberts books. I am always thrilled to find a new one or revisit one I have already read. I am triply thrilled when I find a new trilogy. This set of books does not disspoint.
Again, all three of the books in this series can stand alone. However, I find that it is nice to read all three in order because the characters build on each other and develop throughout the series.
Sea Swept is about three men who had been taken in as young boys by a man who became a father to them. These three men are different but held together by love. When they are asked by their father to care for the new boy he had taken in, they do just that.
Seth is determined to live up to his father's expectation. He is a strong character with an iron will. He also is a very caring man who wants to do right by those around him. Anna is a social worker determined to do her job and ensure the young boy has a suitable home. What follows is a wonderful story about two people working together to provide a home for a young boy. It is wonderful when they realize that they are really walking down the same road and romance blossoms.
I enjoyed the humor that Nora Roberts displayed in this book. As this trilogy continues I found that the humor continued. I appreciated the true feeling of comaradarie among the men that Nora Roberts is able to write about.
I enjoyed this book immensily.

Adorable Read!
By Marie Bast
Mail Order Mix-Up by Christine Johnson was the best romance novel I've read in a long time. It was full of plot twists which held my attention to the very end of the book. The story of three women answering the NY newspaper ad for a bride in Singapore, Michigan, was darling and well written. Pearl Lawson had brought along her friend Amanda, who desperately wanted to get married and one of the three, in hopes as childhood friends, they could remain together in the same town where Pearl had already contracted as the Singapore school teacher, which stated she could not marry and be the school teacher. So she was not vying for Garrett Decker's heart. But Singapore was a town of logging mills and a setting by the Michigan sand dunes that added a great historical dimension to the story. The story is fun, lively, and a page-turner to see who would marry and who would not by the end of the story.

It was fun entering a world of long-ago Michigan and into a town that now no longer exists. The women who came to this forlorn place were very courageous and this is an interesting story about them. I loved the personality of the main character Pearl and her feisty but goodhearted nature. I also liked that, even though she wasn't beautiful in the conventional sense she attractive in the conventional way, she wound up with the best looking man in town.

A definite mixed bag, but worth a read
By R. A. Ward
First of all, please ignore the hokey cover of this book. The publishing house tried to have their cake and eat it too -- they wanted the "thrill of abduction" on the cover, thus the woman being carried off -- but they also couldn't make it seem "scary" or realistic so the lady and her pretty-boy abductor are grinning like fools at each other. It just comes off as a bit forced and surreal.
Once you get inside, you will see there are three selections in this book: "Redbird" by Diana Palmer, "The Bluest Eyes in Texas" by Joan Johnston, and "The Bounty" by Rebecca Brandewyne.
I enjoyed "Redbird" the most because the characters and the situation they found themselves in were believable. The author did not gloss over the possible consequences of the kidnapping, and instead worked with it. I also believed that the two would actually want to be together and make their marriage work by the end. Finally, I really liked the hero, a must for me to truly enjoy a romance story. While he could be rash, he is really a big lovable bear, with the nice twist of not being a ladykiller in his behavior. He is a good mix of Alpha and Beta characteristics.
"The Bluest Eyes in Texas" was OK, but it was over-the-top cliched with Ranger Burr Covington being obsessed with the social-economic differences between him and the governor's daughter, Lindsey Major, and especially with her blue eyes. I realize it's the title, but Johnston relied on the "blue eyes" theme to the point of annoyance. Considering the abruptness of the ending and the fact that I didn't believe for one minute Covington would have really proposed that soon, she could have deleted half of the references to "blue eyes" and saved the words for more character development and a better ending.
I liked "Bounty" the least. While it has the hottest sex scenes, I simply did not like Rafer Starr. He is a cliched Alpha-bad boy character. He sees "strong" Hayley Harper and immediately wants to "tame" her down, like some sort of house pet. This story also relied far too heavily on sexual chemistry and simply did not make me believe the characters were compatible for anything more than a roll in the hay by the time the story ended.
I felt that Palmer ("Redbird") did the best with the short format the authors were restricted to, and made the most of the space she had to create a more realistic romance. "The Bluest Eyes in Texas" would have benefited from more space to make the story less one-dimensional and allow for a richer, fuller maturation of the characters' relationship and especially a better ending. "The Bounty" would have not been any better with more space, just longer. Rafer Starr is simply not a likable character. His attitude is, "Sure honey, we can have a partnership. As long as I'm always in charge and you let me take care of you!"

GREAT CATCH UP STORY OF HANK - LONG TALL TEXANS
By M. Hartmann
I do agree - Hank's story should have been longer -- but it was still excellent.
Hank Shoeman, of the Desperado Rock group and song writer, is being spied upon, probably by a sensation seeking reporter in his Colorado retreat.
He is going to protect Amanda Sutton [of Sutton's Way] from the press as she is having a difficult time with her pregnancy.
He grins, as he decides to abduct the reporter. A snow storm is coming down the mountain at the time and after he, a big bear of a man - 6 foot 5, carries Poppy O'Brien into his cabin an avalanch takes out the power - oh boy, no electricity.
Strangely, Poppy does not feal physically threatened by Hank. He does try to convince her to exercise sexual freedom but she refuses. She is waiting for a husband and marriage. [good for her - she is one gutsy lady]
Their pathway to love does have its humorous side - for the truly romantic this is one great story. Of Love, Tolerance, and Acceptance. For one not exactlly handsome man, he got one great lady! Hank's description and dilemma is well worth the read.
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED as are most of D.'s stories - a great addition to the Long, Tall Texans series.

THE BOUNTY - GREAT STORY
By M. Hartmann
The Bounty is a great story about strong characters.
Haley Harper is a stong woman, except when it comes to her hormones. She is after the bounty.
Rafer Starr, of Shooting Starr, Incorporated, is a renowned bounty hunter. Admired even by Haley's dad, a bounty hunter in his own right.
The bounty on Dolan Pike is 25,000 dollars. Haley needs this bounty to keep her one woman organization going. She certainly is not going to brook any interference from Starr.
Except, wouldn't you know, Starr turns the tables on her and abducts her. Therein lies a great short story. Haley is not given much choice except to work with Starr. Of course, the hormones kick in and the attraction escalates.
If she is pushing 40, how many kids does she think she can have?
Both want children but whoa, they sure better hurry up.
Any chance of finding out in a later story??????????
Definitely recommended if you like kick butt action.

5 roguishly delicious stars.
By Samantha Pereira
Honestly, fast-paced historical romances with some suspense thrown in are a weakness of mine. I don't recall ever reading Terri Brisbin but am insanely glad I grabbed this up. The story moved well and the characters were great. Overall, I was kept wanting more and desiring a happy ending between Fia and Niall.

Niall isn't what he seems and is doing what he must in order to redeem his family name and gain back all that he lost. He didn't mean to take Fia but that's what ends up happening and she gets under his skin in the most irritating yet delicious way possible. He eventually gains her trust and steals her heart.

The overall movement of the book is great, not too face and not too slow, yet there's a lot of information and detail. The world spins about you as you read the novel and things constantly shift because you get glimpses of things that change your opinion and thoughts of certain characters. The supporting characters are just as interesting and delightful as Niall and Fia are, as well.

I have been reading Terri Brisbin novels for a couple decades and she never ceases to amaze me. As here she goes again in another magnificent novel readers won't be able to put down! This is the second Brisbin book in a row that made me cry! That says a lot if I am getting that emotional from the story and feel that much of a connection. If you are a lover of Highlanders and Scotland it's a must read for you. You can read this books as a stand alone book too. Just a bit more character connections and more fun to read in series order - in my opinion.

In this book and if following the series you will have met the heroine, Fia Mackintosh as a child and young girl in the first two previous “A Highland Feuding” books. Now she has her own book and what a spectacular book it is!

Fia Mackintosh lady's maid to Arabella who is wife of Chattan federation chief, Brodie Mackintosh. Fia wishes someone would kidnap and sweep her off her feet too. Just like Both Chief Brodie and Rob Mackintosh, did with their wives. Fia finding it so extremely romantic and wishes this would be her future too. Well as they say be careful for what you wish for…..

The hero of this story Niall Corbett, who is the King’s Spy. Also, because of a past misdeed his family has lost their titles, property and homes which he is trying desperately to get back. His family is forced to make choices they normally wouldn't make or accept. Niall hasn't seen his family in years. The King is suspicious of these attack on MacKintosh lands. He suspects it is an outside force trying to start a clan war between clans Mackintosh and Cameron again. Especially since there has been peace for the past six years. So he has Niall spy for him in the disguise of an outlaw. So Niall can find out who is giving the orders behind these attacks. Then and only then would the King give back all that has been taken away from Niall and his family.

Now Niall is running with a gang of outlaws that would do anything for a piece of gold. In addition they are burning crops, killing livestock and recently even murder. Yet trying to make it look as if it were done by the Cameron clan. The ruffians leader Lundie, has not shared a name of the one he takes orders from. The one issuing orders of these attacks, the one name the King seeks!

Niall uses the name Iain Dubh and imitated the ruffians uneducated speech, looking dirty unkept, and wearing the worn dirty clothes they all wear and so on. Now while Brodie and many of his warriors are away - the outlaws are told to attack and pillage the main village close to Brodie's strongholds. Niall spots the most beautiful lass and tries to warn her away before it too late. Then two of the ruffians of the group saw the wee beauty and want to have a wee bit of fun with the lass. Not in an honorable way in the least so Niall has no choice, but one...

In an attempt to save Fia, Niall now known as Iain Dubh makes her his prisoner! He is also ruining her reputation the longer she remains in their captivity. People will assume the worse whether it happens or not. Sadly it's the way of the world at this time period. Yet the more time Fia and Niall spend in others company the more the attraction builds. Also as they get to know each other Fia starts to realise that this ruffian isn't the same man when alone with her, as he his with the other outlaws. Which man is he? The outlaw or the educated gentleman? Plus they are hiding in caves that Fia is very familiar with. Will Fia be able to attempt a successful escape?

Will Brodie and his warriors find her in time? As the longer she remains in their custody the more chances her reputation is in peril, as well as her heart. Will the other outlaws have their wicked way with Fia ot worse? Will Fia find out what this Iain Dubh really is hiding and who he really is? Choices and decisions will need to be made and no matter what is decided will it involve heartbreak and destruction? You will have read this exquisite novel to find out!

Terri Brisbin, The queen of Scottish historical romance does it again! As she pens another fast paced, non-stop action, mesmerizing riveting starcrossed romantic adventure! This book is filled with enchanting landscapes, breathtaking betrayal, and heartwarming passion. Plus feuding clans, secrets, lies, intrigue, mystery, suspense abduction, love and more. Problems seem to multiply and choices to be made, but what shall they be?

Again another exceptional Terri Brisbin novel the I highly recommend. Tugging at heartstrings, tearing up I simply couldn't put down! Absolutely loved it from start to finish! I can't wait for the next A Highland Feuding novel!

I was given this ARC from Harlequin publishers through netgalley for an honest review.

A Light-hearted Historical Romance
By LibStaff2
3.5 Stars
A steady-paced historical romance that focuses more on the wooing than the sizzling scenes (which can be better). This novel is part of a series, but can be read as a stand-alone. The MCs are likeable, and I did enjoy a female MC who believes in dreams and love, but the storytelling does feel rushed at times. One character I was really interested in was Alan, the tracker. I hope he gets to be the male MC in one of the next installments.

Lights were on in her attic—lights that definitely hadn't been gleaming when she left that morning.

A cold early March breeze blew off the ocean, sending dead leaves skittering across the road in front of her headlights and twisting and yanking the boughs of the Sitka spruce around Brambleberry House as Anna Galvez pulled into the driveway, behind an unfamiliar vehicle.

The lights and the vehicle could only mean one thing.

Her new tenant had arrived.

She sighed. She so didn't need this right now. Exhaustion pressed on her shoulders with heavy, punishing hands and she wanted nothing but to slip into a warm bath with a mind-numbing glass of wine.

The day had been beyond ghastly. She could imagine few activities more miserable than spending an entire humiliating day sitting in a Lincoln City courtroom being confronted with the unavoidable evidence of her own stupidity.

And now, despite her battered ego and fragile psyche, she had to go inside and make nice with a stranger who wouldn't even be renting the top floor of Brambleberry House if not for the tangled financial mess that stupidity had caused.

In the backseat, Conan gave one sharp bark, though she didn't know if he was anxious at the unfamiliar vehicle parked in front of them or just needed to answer the call of nature.

Since they had been driving for an hour, she opted for the latter and hurried out into the wet cold to open the sliding door of her minivan. The big shaggy beast she inherited nearly a year earlier, along with the rambling Victorian in front of her, leaped out in one powerful lunge.

Tail wagging, he rushed immediately to sniff around the SUV that dared to enter his territory without his permission. He lifted his leg before she could kick-start her brain and Anna winced.

"Conan, get away from there," she called sternly. He sent her a quizzical look, then gave a disgruntled snort before lowering his leg and heading to one of his favorite trees instead.

She really hoped her new tenant didn't mind dogs.

She hated the idea of a stranger in Sage's apartment. If she had her way, she would keep it empty, even though Sage and her husband and stepdaughter had their own beach house now a half mile down the shore for their frequent visits to Cannon Beach from their San Francisco home.

But after Anna vehemently refused to accept financial help from Sage and Eben, Sage had insisted she at least rent out her apartment to help defray costs.

The two of them were co-owners of the house and Sage's opinion certainly had weight. Besides, Anna was nothing if not practical. The apartment was empty, she had a fierce, unavoidable need for income and she knew many people were willing to pay a premium for furnished beachfront living space.

Army Lieutenant Harry Maxwell among them.

She gazed up at the lights cutting through the twilight from the third-story window. She was going to have to go up there and welcome him to Brambleberry House. No question. It was the right thing to do, even if the long, exhausting day in that courtroom had left her as bedraggled and wrung-out as one of Conan's tennis balls after a good hard game of fetch on the beach.

She might want to do nothing but climb into her bed, yank the covers over her head and weep for her shattered dreams and her own stupidity, but she had to put all that aside for now and do the polite thing.

She grabbed her laptop case from the passenger seat just as her cell phone rang. Anna swallowed a groan when she saw the name and phone number.

She wasn't sure what was worse—making nice with a stranger now living in her home or being forced to carry on a conversation with the bubbly real estate agent who had facilitated the whole deal.

With grim resignation, she opened her phone and connected the call. "Anna Galvez speaking."

"Anna! It's Tracy Harder!"

Even if she hadn't already noted Tracy's information on the caller ID, she would have recognized the other woman's perky enthusiasm in an instant.

"So have you seen him yet?" Tracy asked.

Anna screwed her eyes shut as if she could just make those upstairs lights—and Tracy—disappear. "I just pulled up to the house, Tracy. I've been in Lincoln City all day. I haven't had a chance to even walk into the house yet. So, no, I haven't seen him. I'm planning to go up to say hello in a moment."

"You are the luckiest woman in town right now. I mean it! You have absolutely no idea."

"You're right," she said, unable to keep the dry note out of her voice. "But I'm willing to bet you're about to enlighten me."

Tracy gave a low, sultry laugh. "I know we didn't mention a finder's fee on top of my usual property management commission, but you just might want to kick a bonus over my way after you meet him. The man is gorgeous. Yum, that's all I have to say. Yum!"

Just what she needed. A player who would probably be entertaining a long string of model types at all hours of the day and night. "As long as he pays his rent on time and only needs a two-month lease, I don't care what he looks like."

"That's because you haven't met him yet. How much longer will Julia Blair and her kids be renting the second floor? I might be interested when she moves out—I'd love to be beneath that man."

Anna couldn't help her groan, both at Tracy's not so subtle sexual innuendo and at the idea of the real estate agent's wild boys living in the second-floor apartment.

"Julia and Will aren't getting married until June," she answered. With any luck, Lieutenant Maxwell would be long gone by then, leaving behind only his nice fat rental check.

"When she moves out, let me know. That might be a good time for us to talk about a more long-term solution to Brambleberry House. You can't keep taking in temporary renters to pay for the repairs on it. The place is a black hole that will suck away every penny you have."

Didn't she just know it? Anna let herself in the front door, noting that the paint on the porch was starting to crack and peel.

Replacing the furnace the month before had taken just about her last dime of discretionary income—not that she had much of that, as she tried to shore up her faltering business amid scandal and chicanery. The house needed a new roof, which was going to cost more than buying a brand-new car.

"Now listen," Tracy went on in her ear as Anna opened the door to her apartment to set down her laptop, Conan on her heels. "I told you I've got several fabulous potential buyers on the hook with both the cash and the interest in a great old Victorian on the coast. You need to think about it, Anna. I mean it."

"I guess I didn't realize there was such a market for big black holes these day."

Tracy laughed. "When you have enough money, no hole is too big or too black."

And when you had none, even a pothole could feel like an insurmountable obstacle. Anna swallowed another sigh. "I appreciate the offer and your help finding a tenant for the attic apartment."

"But you're not interested in selling." Tracy's voice was resigned.

"Not right now."

"You're as stubborn as Abigail was. I'm telling you, Anna, you're sitting on a gold mine."

"I know." She sat down in Abigail's favorite armchair. "But for now it's my gold mine. Mine and Sage's."

"All right, but when you change your mind, you know where to find me. And I want you to call me after you meet our Lieutenant Maxwell."

As far as Anna was concerned, the man wasn't our anything. Tracy was welcome to him. "Thanks again for dealing with the details of the rental agreement," she answered. "I'll let you know how things are going in a week or two. 'Bye, Tracy."

She ended the call and set down her phone, then leaned her head back against the floral upholstery. Conan sat beside her and, like the master manipulator he was, nudged one of her hands off the armrest and onto his head.

She scratched him between the ears for a moment, trying to let the peace she usually found at Brambleberry House seep through her. After a few moments—just when her eyelids were drifting closed—Conan slid away from her and moved to the door. He planted his haunches there and watched her expectantly.

"Yeah, I know, already," she grumbled. "I plan to go upstairs and say hello. I don't need you nagging me about it. I just need a minute to work up to it."

Still, she climbed out of the chair. After a check in the mirror above the hall tree, she did a quick repair of her French twist, grabbed Conan's leash off the hook by the door and put it on him, then headed up the stairs to meet her new neighbor.

As she trailed her fingers on the railing worn smooth by a hundred years of Dandridge hands, she reviewed what she knew about the man. Though Tracy had handled the details, Anna knew Lieutenant Maxwell had impeccable references.

He was an army helicopter pilot who had just served two tours of duty in the Middle East. He was currently on medical leave, recovering from injuries sustained in a hard landing in the midst of enemy fire.

He was single, thirty-five years old and willing to pay a great deal of money to rent her attic for only a few months.

When Tracy told her his background, Anna wanted to reduce the rent. She was squeamish about charging full price to an injured war veteran, but he refused to accept any concession.

Fine, she thought now as she paused on the third-floor landing. But she could still be gracious and welcoming to the man and hope that he would find the healing and peace at Brambleberry House that she usually did.

Outside his door, the scent of freesia curled around her and she closed her eyes for a moment, missing Abigail with a fierce ache. Conan didn't let her wallow in it. He gave a sharp bark and started wagging his tail furiously.

With a sigh, Anna knocked on the door. A moment later, it swung open and she forgot all about being kind and welcoming.

Tracy had told the God's-honest truth.

Yum.

Lieutenant Maxwell was tall—perhaps six-two—with hair the color of aged whiskey and chiseled, lean features. He wore a burgundy cotton shirt and faded jeans with a small, fraying hole below the knee.

He had a small scar on the ...
