A Real Gem of a romance

Quintessential romance in a traditional setting. Nice to read again as a respite fro m current writing. Well written and plotted with characters you can appreciate and understand.

A sweetly romantic, easy to read, feel good story
By Donna K.
from the back cover: Their songs and their passion would electrify a waiting world. Raven Williams was a singer who had an overwhelming need to love and be loved, and whose voice of rich dark velvet had catapulted her to fame. Brandon Carstairs was a musician in whom the charming Irish Dreamer warred with a practical British reserve. The music they made together was exciting, disturbing and erotic. Soon it would reach a dangerous crescendo.

From inside the front cover: Singing with Brand was more moving than a kiss, more sexual than a caress. When they finished, their voices hung for a moment in the air. Brand saw her lips tremble before he brought her close to him and took them. Spotlighted before thousands, Raven didn't hear the roar of applause, the cheers, the shouts. cameras flashed like firworks, but she felt wrapped in velvet darkness. She lost all sense of time. His lips might have moved on hers for seconds, hours, or even days....

This book was far superior to other Nora Roberts' older books that I've read, almost reaching the quality of her current releases. Although written in 1983, the story itself and the style of writing wasn't at all dated. I loved the well-written way the romance and attraction was presented, with very subtle erotic undertones, but without being overtly graphic at all. Set against an artistic musical background, much of this story takes place in beautifully described Cornwall England, adding a depth to the story that most romances of this type don't have. And both heroes were very likable people, whose dialogue flowed naturally and for the most part, without silly hostile bickering, another unusual feature of many of these types of romances.

Raven and Brand were a couple five years earlier, but went their separate ways in a hurtful manner after a terrible misunderstanding, yet each had never truly gotten over loving the other. When their brilliant musical minds are thrown together to write the score to a musical, they must face the issues that had separated them in the past, and come to a new understanding, reconciling their love.

I deducted one star because the story came to a natural ending point once the professional project had ended. However, another silly misunderstanding was unnecessarily thrown in to separate the couple once again. To me, it sort of undid all the beauty of the previous 200+ pages.

bad story
By Sam
Not a page-turner to say the least! Dont know that I can even finish it because the story line is drawn out and boring. It wouldve been nice to know ahead of time that this book was a re-release.

Review
"Her stories have fueled the dreams of twenty-five million readers." -- Entertainment Weekly

Excerpt. © Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved.
Spring comes late to New England. Snow lingers in isolated patches. Trees begin their greening hesitantly, tiny closed buds of leaves against naked branches. Early blooms of color burst from the earth's womb. The air is fresh with promise.

B.J. tossed open her window with a flourish and welcomed the early breeze into her room. Saturday, she thought with a grin, and began to braid her long, wheat-colored hair. The Lakeside Inn was half-full, the summer season three weeks away, and if all followed her well-ordered plans, her duties as manager would be light for the duration of the weekend.

Her staff was loyal, though somewhat temperamental. Like a large family, they squabbled, sulked, teased and stuck together like mortar and brick when the need arose. And I, she mused with a rueful grin, am head counselor.

Pulling on faded jeans, B.J. did not pause to consider the incongruity of the title. A small, childlike woman reflected in her glass, curves disguised by casual attire, braids hanging impishly astride a heart shaped, elfin face with huge smoky eyes dominant. Her only large feature, they swamped the tip-tilted nose and cupid's bow mouth and were prone to smolder or sparkle with the fluctuations of her mood. After lacing dilapidated sneakers, she jogged from the room, intending to check on breakfast preparations before stealing an hour for a solitary walk.

The main staircase of the inn was wide and uncarpeted, connecting its four sprawling stories without curve or angle, as straight and sturdy as the building itself. She saw with satisfaction the lobby was both tidy and deserted. The curtains were drawn to welcome the sun, needlepoint pillows plumped, and a vase of fresh wildflowers adorned the high, well-polished registration desk. The clatter of cutlery carried from the dining room as she passed through the downstairs hall, and she heard, with a long suffering sigh, the running argument between her two waitresses.

"If you really like a man with small, pig eyes, you should be very happy."

B.J. watched Dot shrug her thin shoulders with the words as she rolled a place setting in white linen.

"Wally does not have pig eyes," Maggie insisted. "They're very intelligent. You're just jealous," she added with grim relish as she filled the sugar dispensers.

"Jealous! Ha! The day I'm jealous of a squinty-eyed little runt... Oh, hello, B.J."

"Good morning, Dot, Maggie. You rolled two spoons and a knife at that setting, Dot. I think a fork might be a nice touch."

Accompanied by her companion's snickers, Dot unrolled the linen. "Wally's taking me to a double feature at the drive-in tonight." Maggie's smug statement followed B.J. into the kitchen, and she allowed the door to swing shut on the ensuing retort.

Unlike the casual, old fashioned atmosphere of the remainder of the inn, the kitchen sparkled with twentieth century efficiency. Stainless steel glimmered everywhere in the oversized room, the huge stove attesting that the inn's main attraction was its menu. Cupboards and cabinets stood like veteran soldiers, walls and linoleum gleaming with fresh cleaning. B.J. smiled, pleased with the room's perfection and the drifting scent of coffee.

"Morning, Elsie." She received an absent mutter from the round woman working at a long, well-scrubbed counter. "If everything's under control, I'm going out for a couple of hours."

"Betty Jackson won't send any blackberry jelly."

"What? Well, for goodness sake why not?" Annoyed by the complication, B.J. plucked a fresh muffin from a basket and began to devour it. "Mr. Conners always asks for her jelly, and we're down to the last jar."

"She said if you couldn't be bothered to pay a lonely old woman a visit, she couldn't be bothered to part with any jelly."

"Lonely old woman?" B.J.'s exclamation was hampered by a mouthful of muffin. "She runs more news items through that house of hers than the Associated Press. Blast it, Elsie, I really need that jelly. I was too busy last week to go listen to the latest special bulletins."

"The new owner coming Monday got you worried?"

"Who's worried? I'm not worried." Scowling, she confiscated another muffin. "It's simply that as manager of the inn, I want everything to be in order."

"Eddie said you were muttering and slamming around your office after you got the letter saying he was coming."

"I was not...muttering...." Moving to the refrigerator, B.J. poured a glass of juice and spoke to Elsie's wide back. "Taylor Reynolds has a perfect right to inspect his property. It's just, blast it, Elsie, it was all those vague comments about modernizing. Mr. Taylor Reynolds better keep his hands off the Lakeside Inn and play with his other hotels. We don't need to be modernized," she continued, rapidly working herself up into a temper. "We're perfectly fine just the way we are. There's not a thing wrong with us, we don't need anything." She finished by folding her arms across her chest and glaring at the absent Taylor Reynolds.

"Except blackberry jelly," Elsie said mildly. B.J. blinked and brought herself back to the present.

"Oh, all right," she muttered and stalked toward the door. "I'll go get it. But if she tells me one more time that Howard Beall is a fine boy and good husband material, I'll scream. Right there in her living room with the doilies and chintz, I'll scream!"

Leaving this dire threat hanging in the air, B.J. stepped out into the soothing yellow sunlight.

"Blackberry jelly," she mumbled as she hopped on a battered red bike. "New owners with fancy notions...." Lifting her face to the sky, she tossed a pigtail behind her shoulder.

Pedaling down the maple lined drive, quicksilver temper ebbed, her resilient spirits were lifted with the beauty of the day. The valley was stirring with life. Small clusters of fragile violets and red clover dotted the rolling meadows. Lines of fresh laundry waved in the early breeze. The boundary of mountains was topped by a winter's coat, not yet the soft, lush green it would be in a month's time, but patched with stark black trees and the intermittent color of pines. Clouds scudded thin and white across the sky, chased by the teasing wind which whispered of spring and fresh blossoms.

Good humor restored, B.J. arrived in town with pink cheeks and a smile, waving to familiar faces along the route to Betty Jackson's jelly. It was a small town with tidy lawns, picket fences and old, well-kept homes. The dormers and gables were typical of New England. Nestled like a contented cat in the rolling valley, and the brilliant shimmer of Lake Champlain to the west, Lakeside remained serene and untouched by big city bustle. Having been raised on its outskirts had not dulled its magic for B.J.: she felt, as always when entering its limits, a gratitude that somewhere life remained simple.

Parking her bike in front of a small, green-shuttered house, B.J. swung through the gate and prepared to negotiate for her jelly supply.

"Well, B.J., what a surprise." Betty opened the door and patted her gray permanent. "I thought you'd gone back to New York."

"Things have been a bit hectic at the inn," she returned, striving for the proper humility.

"The new owner." Betty nodded with a fortune teller's wisdom and gestured B.J. inside. "I hear he wants to spruce things up."

Resigned that Betty Jackson's communications system was infallible, B.J. settled herself in the small living room.

"You know Tom Myers is adding another room to his house." Brushing off the seat of an overstuffed chair, Betty shifted her ample posterior and sat. "Seems Lois is in the family way again." She clucked her tongue over the Myers' profligacy. "Three babies in four years. But you like little ones, don't you, B.J.?"

"I've always been fond of children, Miss Jackson," B.J. acknowledged, wondering how to turn the conversation toward preserves.

"My nephew, Howard, just loves children."

B.J. braced herself not to scream and met the bland smile, calmly. "We've a couple at the inn now. Children do love to eat." Pleased with the maneuver, she pressed on. "They've simply devoured your jellies. I'm down to my last jar. Nobody has the touch you do with jellies, Miss Jackson; you'd put the big manufacturers out of business if you opened your own line."

"It's all in the timing," Betty preened under the praise, and B.J. tasted the hint of victory.

"I'd just have to close down if you didn't keep me supplied." Gray eyes fluttered ingenuously. "Mr. Conners would be crushed if I had to serve him store-bought goods. He simply raves about your blackberry jelly. "Ambrosia," she added, relishing the word. "He says it's ambrosia."

"Ambrosia." Betty nodded in self-satisfied agreement.

Ten minutes later, B.J. placed a box of a dozen jars of jelly in the basket of her bike and waved a cheerful goodbye.

"I came, I saw, I conquered," she told the sky with audacious pride. "And I did not scream."

"Hey, B.J.!"

She twisted her head at the sound of her name, waving to the group playing sand lot ball as she pedaled to the edge of the field.

"What's the score?" she asked the young boy who ran to her bike.

"Five to four. Junior's team's winning."

She glanced over to where Junior stood, tall and gangly on the pitcher's mound, tossing a ball in his glove and grinning.

"Little squirt," she mumbled with reluctant affection. "Let me pinch hit once." Confiscating the boy's battered cap, she secured it over her pigtails and walked onto the field.

"You gonna play, B.J.?" Suddenly surrounded by young bodies and adolescent faces, B.J. lifted a bat and tested it. "For a minute. I have to get back."

Junior approached, hands on hips, and grinned down from his advantage of three inches. "Wanna bet I strike you out?"

She spared him a brief glance and swung the bat to her shoulder. "I don't want to take your money."

"If I strike you out," he yanked a pigtail with fifteen-year-old aud...

two books in one
By A. Rowley
"By My Side" is two short romance stories in one. Here are descriptions from the jacket back.

FROM THIS DAY- When B.J. Clark, manager of the Lakeside Inn, met the new owner, Taylor Reynolds, she was fully prepared to dislike him. She feared-and with good reason-that he planned to transform her lovely, sleepy old hotel into a resort for jet -setters. But when sparks flew between them, B.J. soon found herself torn between her professional antagonism and her growing attraction to the man she had sworn to despise.

The description fails to mention the evil and absolutely stunning decorator who has set out to get her hands on Taylor Reynolds, and feels threatened by the new girl, B.J. The woman is able to cleverly manipulate every situation tearing the two farther apart while digging her own claws into the man she desires, but not even her deception can stop the attraction building between B.J. and Taylor.

TEMPTATION-Socialite Eden Carlbough didn't expect running a girl's camp to be easy, but she never thought she'd literally be run up an apple tree by the little monsters-nor did she think she'd come crashing down into the capable arms of orchard owner Chase Elliot. Chase knew he'd caught a windfall when he looked at the woman in his arms. He didn't like being cast as the serpent, but how could he resist when she'd just offered him such forbidden fruit?

This description does not explain much of the plot at all, so I will try to elaborate. Eden Carlbough is a socialite, spoiled with loads of money and all the proper manners and training to live up to her role, until one day when her father dies and her world comes crashing to an end. She is left with no money, and her fiancee calls off the wedding in fear of the scandal ruining his reputation. Eden's only hope of saving face is to make a new life for herself on her own without the help of her wealthy Aunt. Her best friend talks Eden into helping start an all girls summer camp. While working harder than she has ever done in her life, Eden meets the neighbor, Chase Elliot of Elliot Apples. The attraction is instant, but still hurt from her past, Eden does not give her heart so quickly. It will take the heart of a menacing child to bring the two together.

These two stories are light romances. Not exactly up to Nora Robert's usual quality. The romance falls a bit short and even though I know that because these were short stories the love between the characters had to build quickly, it just seemed a little to sudden. Especially in "From this Day" It was just a bit unbelievable, but I guess that is why we read fiction. However, I just couldn't rate this book as high as I had originally hoped.

Is it worth buying?

I hate to say it, but if you are interested in reading this book, check it out from the library. It is not worth as much as I spent off the rack.

Easy reading for a quiet day!
By betty l. dravis
I was in a relaxed mood on a rainy day last week; not up to my usual "thriller" fare, so I found an old book of Nora Roberts to read. My daughter had given it to me and I never got around to reading it. By My Side: From This DayTemptation was the perfect, easy read for just such a day and I enjoyed it very much.

In fact "By My Side" contains two books in one: the classic novels From This Day and Temptation (Language of Love). Speaking of a treasure trove, if you enjoy wholesome romance, this is it!

"From This Day" is about an inn manager, B. J. Clark, who is disturbed because she fears the new owner will turn her beloved old hotel into a playground for jet-setters. When the owner, Taylor Reynolds, drops in to check his new property and its future potential, B.J.'s professional antagonism puts a barrier between them from the start. He seems amused by it all, but when sparks fly between them, both are surprised. Readers will be surprised, also, by the twists and turns that keep them apart... Will circumstances destroy the love building between them? Hmmmm...

"Temptation" is another bestseller among Roberts' many. In this story, socialite Eden Carlbough agrees to run a girls' camp, knowing it won't be easy, but accepting the challenge with good grace. She never expects to meet "the love of her life," Chase Elliot, in an apple orchard...and thus the entertainment begins. This is a fun-filled boy-meets-girl-in-unusual-circumstances story told in Roberts's inimitable style. Will love triumph? Hmmmm...

Roberts is a born storyteller, bringing both of these captivating love stories to fruition with her usual dexterity, through exciting twists and turns that kept me wondering until the very satisfying endings. Well, truthfully, I knew they would get together eventually because love always triumphs in romance books...doesn't it?

Roberts's skillful use of words and warm feel for her characters is unsurpassed, so I highly recommend this book.

Pathetically unbelievable
By A Rosenberg
I've read a lot of Nora Roberts and generally enjoy her books, but this one was just stupid. The plots were more in the line of sexual harassment than romance, and they were too jarring and silly for suspension of disbelief to kick in. If I were the "heroine" of a romance novel, and the new owner of the inn I managed showed up out of the blue one day, insulted me for hours, and threatened to turn my cozy, home-like inn into a commercial resort, then when he tried to kiss me later that night, I wouldn't let him get away with it: I'd kick him where the sun don't shine and probably pour maple syrup into the engine of his low-slung white Lamborghini.

If you're looking for Nora romance, stick with the MacGregors or the Quinns or the Irish novels. I couldn't even finish either part of this one, and for me, that's saying something.

Great read
By mo.c.
This is a story set in the late 1800's about a young woman and her grandfather who make up a story about a husband gone off to pan for gold in Alaska to cover up her pregnancy. The problem with this is the grandfather got the name of a real person in Alaska, who eventually receives the letters of the little boy and comes to Colorado to give the boy the father he wants. It was a quite believable story. A glimpse into the lifestyles of this era and a bit of a glimpse into the beer brewing business of this family.

I've been found.

The thought shot through Scout Cramer's head, left her breathless, frantic. She veered the shopping cart toward the store exit, her heart pounding, her body vibrating with fear.

In her periphery, a man moved in. Casual in his dark slacks and sport coat, he looked like any other holiday shopper. She wanted so badly to believe he was.

Please, God. Please. Let me be wrong about who he is.

But she didn't think she was.

She thought she was right. Thought that somehow, after nearly three years, everything she'd tried to do for Amber, everything she'd tried to do for herself and Lucy had come to nothing. If she'd been found out, if he'd learned the truth, it was all for nothing. Every lie. Every broken friendship.

All of it.

For nothing.

"Please, God," she whispered as she unhooked Lucy's belt and lifted her from the cart. At just a little over twentyfour pounds, she was tiny for her age, her little arms wrapping snugly around Scout's neck.

"Mommy needs to find the restroom," Scout murmured, afraid to walk out into the parking lot. He'd follow her there. She was sure of it. After that…

What would he do?

Confront her?

Worse?

The store was filled with holiday shoppers, dozens of people crowding into Walmart's long lines, all of them desperate for Christmas bargains.

Would anyone notice if Scout was attacked?

Would anyone intervene?

Maybe, but she didn't plan to stick around long enough to find out.

She glanced at the man, hoping he didn't notice her sideways look. He was still, hovering at the head of an aisle, pretending to look at cans of asparagus.

She pivoted away, hurrying toward a restroom sign and the corridor beyond it. There had to be an emergency exit. She nearly ran to the end of the hall, stopping at double doors marked Employees Only.

What would happen if she walked in?

Would someone call the police? Set off an alarm?

Would she be arrested? If she was, what would happen to Lucy?

She looked at her little girl, smiling into dark brown eyes that were so much like Amber's it hurt to look in them.

"It's going to be okay," she whispered, and she hoped she was right. She'd made a lot of mistakes in her life. She'd done a lot of things she'd regretted, but she'd never regretted her friendship with Amber. She'd never regretted the promise she'd made to her.

Even if she did sometimes wonder if she'd been right to make it.

She glanced over her shoulder. No sign of the guy in the sport jacket. But her skin crawled, and her hair stood on end.

Something wasn't right, and that scared her more than anything else that had happened in the past couple of years.

She pushed the door open, took a step into what must have been an employee break room. No one there. Thank goodness. Just vending machines, a microwave, a refrigerator. Straight across from where she stood, an external door with a small window offered the hope of escape she'd been looking for.

"Everything okay, ma'am?" The voice was so unexpected, she jumped, whirling to face the speaker, her heart in her throat, her arms tightening around Lucy.

Tall.

That was the first impression she got.

Very tall, because she was eye to chest, staring straight at a black wool coat that hung open to reveal a dark purple dress shirt.

She looked up into ocean-blue eyes and a hard, handsome face, took in the black knit cap that almost covered deep red hair, the auburn stubble, the deep circles beneath the man's eyes. He smiled, and his face changed. Not hard any longer. Approachable. The kind of guy a woman might put her trust in.

If she ever put her trust in anyone.

"I'm fine," she managed to say.

"You're in the employee break room," he pointed out, flashing an easy smile. There was nothing easy about the look in his eyes. She was being studied, assessed, filed away for future reference.

"Yes. Well." She glanced around, trying to think of a good excuse for being in a place she shouldn't be. "I was looking for the restroom."

"You passed it."

"I guess I did." Her cheeks heated, but she refused to look away. He hadn't hauled out handcuffs or threatened to arrest her yet, so he probably wasn't a security guard or police officer. She doubted he was working with the man who'd been following her. She'd have noticed him way before she'd noticed the other guy. That dark red hair and lanky height weren't easy to miss. "I'll just go find it."

She sidled past him, moving back into the hall, Lucy's arms still tight around her neck. She'd do anything for her daughter. Anything. Even run away from everything she knew. Give up a job she loved. Say goodbye to friends and never contact them again.

"Are you in some kind of trouble?" the guy asked, following her down the hall.

Was she?

She didn't know, wasn't made for intrigue and danger. She liked quiet predictability. No drama. No muss. Nothing that was even close to trouble. The one time she'd tried to break free, do something wild and reckless and completely different, she'd caused herself enough heartache to last a lifetime.

No more.

Never again.

Except that she had done it again. Gone out on a limb, done something completely out of character. For different reasons, but the results had been the same. Trouble. It was breathing down her neck. She felt it as surely as she felt Lucy's soft breath on her cheek.

"Ma'am?" The man touched her arm, and she jerked back, surprised and a little alarmed. She'd kept mostly to herself since moving to River Valley, Maryland, spent all her time with Lucy or at work. She didn't let people into their world, into the place she'd carved for them. The safe little house in the safe little neighborhood.

"Are you in trouble?" he asked again, shoving his hands in the pockets of his black slacks and taking a step back.

"No," she mumbled even though she wasn't sure. The guy in the sport jacket seemed to have disappeared, and she was beginning to think she'd let her imagination get the better of her. But if she hadn't…?

Then what?

Could she run again?

Did she need to?

"Sure looks like you are to me."

"I'm fine," she insisted, and he nodded solemnly, his blue eyes never leaving her face.

"I'm glad to hear it, ma'am, but just in case you decide you're not—" he pulled a wallet out of his pocket, took a business card from it "—take this. I can help. If you decide you need it."

She took the card. Plain white with black letters and a small blue heart in one corner. "'Daniel Boone Anderson. Hostage Rescue and Extraction Team,'" she read out loud.

He nodded. "That's right."

"I'm not a hostage." She tried to give the card back, but he shoved his hands in his pockets, still eyeing her solemnly.

"That doesn't mean you don't need rescuing," he responded.

"I—"

"Take care of yourself and that baby." He nodded, one quick tilt of his head, and walked off, long legs eating up the ground so quickly he was out of the corridor and around the corner before she could blink.

She shoved the card in her coat pocket.

She wouldn't use it. Couldn't.

She'd promised Amber that she wouldn't tell anyone the truth about Lucy. She'd promised that no matter what happened, she'd keep it to herself. At the time, she'd expected Amber to be around, to help her navigate the world of subterfuge she'd agreed to. The fact that she wasn't didn't change the promise. Scout had an obligation to her friend. Even if she didn't, she had an obligation to herself and to Lucy. She couldn't cower in a store corridor, praying for rescue. She had to take action, do what needed to be done. Face her fear or call for help. One way or another, she needed to get moving.

"Mama! Go!" Lucy cried, impatient, it seemed, with staying in one spot.

"Okay, sweetie. I hear you." She put her shoulders back and her chin up, marched back to the break room as if she owned the place. Walked through the room as if she had every right to be there. Out the door and into the cold November evening. She'd parked close to the store entrance, and she had to walk around the side of the building to get there. Her heart tripped and jumped, the leaves rustling in the trees that lined the parking lot. A shadow moved in her periphery, and she took off, Lucy bouncing on her hip, giggling wildly as they rounded the side of the building.

* * *

The baby was giggling, but the woman looked scared out of her mind. Not that it was any of Daniel Boone Anderson's business. He should have gone back to hunting for the ingredients for pumpkin bread instead of leaving the store and waiting by the employee entrance. The problem was, he hadn't been too into the holidays during the past few years, and the entire store was decked out with tinsel and Christmas trees and wrapping paper. Every aisle had some reminder of the holiday he least liked to celebrate. The best Christmas had been the one right after Kendal's birth. Two months before Lana had walked out and taken their daughter with her.

Not Lana. He could almost hear his deceased wife's voice. The Prophetess Sari. It has been ordained and it will be so.

That had been her mantra when she'd finally contacted him. Six months after he'd returned from Iraq and found their empty apartment—and the note.

But he tried really hard not to think about that.

Four years was a long time to be missing a piece of your heart.

Which was probably why he spent so much time sticking his nose into other people's business and dealing with other people's problems.

He followed the woman around the side of the building, hanging back as she walked to an old station wagon. Nothing fancy, but she didn't seem like the fancy kind. Her jeans were a little too long, their scuffed cuffs dragging along the pavement as she buckled her daughter into a car seat. A long braid hung to the middle of her back. That had been what he'd noticed first—that long fall of golden-blond hair. Then he'd noticed the darkhaired little girl with her dimples and curls. Probably a couple of years younger than Kendal.

She'd turned five a couple of weeks ago.

He imagined her hair had grown long. It was probably straight as a stick, too.

But that was another direction he couldn't let himself go.

All the begging, all the searching, all the resources that were available, and he still hadn't been able to find Kendal. She'd been lost to someone in the cult. Probably someone who'd left it. Knowing Lana, she'd handed their daughter off without a second thought as to the child's welfare.

Boone never stopped thinking about it.

Even in his sleep, he dreamed about his daughter.

He clenched his fist, leaned his shoulder against a brick pillar that supported a narrow portico. Christmas shoppers moved past, hurrying into the store for whatever deal they thought Friday shopping would bring.

He noticed them, tracking their movements in the part of his brain that had been honed by years working long hours deep in enemy territory, but his focus was on the woman and her child. She opened the driver's door, tossed her purse into the vehicle, glanced around as if she was looking for someone.

Maybe whoever she was running from.

He was sure she was running. He'd seen it in her eyes when she'd lifted her daughter from the grocery cart and run toward the restroom—fear, desperation, all the things he saw in the gazes of the people he was hired to rescue.

The station wagon's headlights went on, and the woman backed out of the space. He'd have been wise to let her go and let the whole matter drop, but he'd never been all that wise when it came to things like this.

As a matter of fact, he often got himself in way deeper than he should be. Mostly because the one thing he wanted to accomplish, he hadn't been able to. He couldn't help himself, but he could help others.

Maybe he really did have an overinflated hero syndrome. That was what his coworker Stella said. She also said it was going to get him killed one day. She might be right about that, too, but he'd rather die trying to help someone than live knowing he hadn't.

He waited, watching as the woman drove to the edge of the parking lot. That should have been it—her driving out, Boone walking back into the store and retrieving the cart full of stuff that he'd left in aisle one.

Lights flashed near the edge of the parking lot. A hundred yards away, another set of headlights went on. A third followed, this one even closer to the exit the woman had used.

His heart jumped, adrenaline pumping through him, thoughts flooding in so quickly, he barely had time to process them before he was sprinting across the parking lot. Jumping into his SUV. All three cars were already exiting, and he had to wait for an elderly woman to make her way across the parking lot in front of him.

He made it to the exit as the last car turned east, its taillights disappearing from view. He followed, turning onto a narrow two-lane road that meandered through hilly farmland. A quiet road, nearly empty. Which wasn't good. His car would be easy enough to spot. Whether or not the guy in front of him realized he was being tailed depended on who was in the car.

They were making quite a line. His car, the one in front and two more just ahead of it. Taillights about a quarter mile ahead that he was sure belonged to the woman's station wagon. He wasn't sure where they were heading, but he pulled out his cell phone. One thing he'd learned a long time ago—only a fool headed into trouble without backup.

He never had a chance to call for it. One minute, he was keeping his distance, watching the procession of cars. The next, the car in front of him braked hard. He had a split second to realize what was happening before his windshield exploded, bits of glass flying into his face and dropping onto the dashboard.

He accelerated, adrenaline surging, every cell, every nerve alert.

The next shot took out a front tire. The SUV swerved, sideswiping a tree and nearly taking out a stop sign. He fought for control, yanking the vehicle back onto the road, the ruined tired thumping, the procession of cars pulling farther ahead.

"Not good!" he muttered, the SUV protesting as he tried to pick up speed again.

Not going to happen. The bumpy road and the flat tire weren't a good combination. He jumped out of the SUV, glad he was carrying. He'd been known to leave his Glock at home. Carrying it around made him feel safe, but it also reminded him of loss and heartache. Of a hundred things that he was better off forgetting.

He snagged his cell phone, dialing Jackson's number, hoping that his friend would pick up. In all the years he'd known the guy, there'd been only a handful of times when he hadn't been available.

But then, that was the way the entire team was. There wasn't a member of HEART who wouldn't be willing to drop anything, travel any distance, risk whatever was necessary to help a comrade.

Jackson answered on the second ring. "Hello?"

"It's Boone."

"Yeah. I saw the number," Jackson said drily. "What's up?"

"I need your help."

"With?"

"I've got a situation."

"What kind of situation?" Jackson's tone changed, his words hard-edged and sharp.

"The kind that involves guns and bullets. A woman. A kid. Three cars that are following her," he responded.

"You call the police yet?"

"Probably would have been a good idea, but I'm not used to having police to rely on." He was used to being deep in a foreign country, working in places where the only people he could count on were his team members.

"Where are you?"

"I didn't see the name of the road. It's the first right north of the Walmart you brought me to a few days ago."

"I'll be there in ten."

"Call the police before you leave. I think we're going to—"

The sound of screeching tires split the quiet, and he shoved the phone back into his pocket, racing toward the sound. He'd covered a hundred yards when light burst to life in the distance.

Fire!

His heart jumped, the new surge of adrenaline giving wings to his feet. He sprinted toward the soft glow and the velvety black of the eastern sky, the sound of sirens splitting the night.

Entertaining But Lacking In A Few Things
By Douglas C. Meeks
The overall story was really good, the main characters were good but by the end of the book there were too many details left untouched or poorly explained.

Boone and Scout made a excellent couple, the backstory on them was the thing that drew them together but it just kinda did not ring true to me as a reader. That means it read exactly like what it was, a made up story fo two people with a too large coincidence to be real meeting randomly.

Make no mistake, I enjoyed the book but at the end I was more like "You are leaving & unsolved or unpunished??? the bottom line is that while I enjoyed the book I felt that the ending was rushed and several things were ended abruptly and we were left with little justice or resolution on a few things. I felt cheated. I know life is not fair but that is why I read books, if I wanted a big dose of "life is not fair" I would read the newspaper or watch the evening news.

4 Stars and I may be generous since a really good editor would never have allowed this book to have the rushed ending that it did and motivations that were unclear at best (trying hard NOT to write any spoilers). This could have been very close to 5 Star with some work instead it is 4 Stars which is almost charity since 3.5 is more like it but I rounded up since I did enjoy the overall story and the two main characters.

Good suspense
By Rhonda
4 STARS

A parents worse nightmare something has happened to your child. Both Boone and Scout have a child missing. Her Christmas Guardian is full of drama, action suspense that will keep you glued to the story.

Scout Cramer and her daughter notice somebody following them. She makes it to her car and cars follow her and take her daughter. Scout is a single mother. She has lived in the same town for three years. Scout has no family except her three year old daughter.

Boone Anderson has had his daughter taken 5 years ago while he was overseas fighting. He can't find his daughter but he helps others reunite with theirs. He notices Scout scared in store and tries to help her. He realizes three cars are following her so he joins in.

Scout will do anything to be with her daughter again. Boone convinces his boss that they can help her at no charge and they step in to help protect Scout even from herself so she can be with her daughter.

This is the second book in the Mission Rescue series. A few of the characters are back to help Scout.

This is a fast read. I wish it was longer story more in depth but it is a good action packed clean story. I hope we get to see more about Boone's past get resolved.

I like Shirlee McCoy's writing style. Will read more stories from her in the future.

I was given this ebook to read by Net Galley and Harlequin. In return I agreed to give honest review of Her Christmas Guardian.

A Mom's worst nightmare
By Bunnyhop
I read almost all of Shirlee's books because I enjoy her characters and her storylines are very realistic! This book is no exception. The suspense is palpable! I had a hard time putting it down. The heroine's name is Scout and I enjoyed that rather unusual name. She is a single mother and suddenly her daughter is kidnapped and Scout is left for dead. Thankfully, the hero, Boone, saw it happen and he comes to the rescue. He just happens to be a member of an elite rescue team. However, the kidnapping is so unusual because Scout has no idea why her daughter was taken and the kidnapper's call to "bring me what I want" in exchange for her daughter is beyond frustrating because Scout has no clue what that is. As I read those words, I thought about what I would do in that circumstance. You are desperate to get your child back but you have no idea how to do it. Boone uses his team to somehow rescue the little girl but it's very realistic, not "Hollywood" stuff so it's believable. I enjoyed the relationship between the two characters and the other secondary characters. I thought it was good to bring in the addition of law enforcement to actually take over the case when it first happened because that is what would happen in "real life" but Boone and his team work along side them.

fine romantic suspense thriller
By A Customer
The Time Raiders send psychic Alexandra Patton back to 60 A.D. so that she can bring back part of the medallion that will enable Earth to join the alliance of other space-traveling planets. Alex loathes the brutal feral behavior of her hosts; as she speaks to the dead who often are victims of atrocities.

Alex pretends to be a soul speaker priestess to the goddess Andraste when she and Queen Boudica's Druidic cousin Caradoc meet and are attracted to one another. As she falls in love, he helps her adjust to ancient times. However, she knows that Boudica will die in the battle for Londinium, but fears Caradoc will too though she does not know for certain.

The third Time Raiders romantic suspense thriller (see The Seeker by Lindsay McKenna and The Slayer by Cindy Dees) is an entertaining tale that hooks readers from the opening dialogue between Alex and the dead but restful Andred and keeps the audience's attention throughout. The spin to the exciting story line is what the time traveler knows about ancient Britannia and does not as Alex fears her beloved will die alongside his famous warrior cousin. This tale and the saga are winners due to a strong casting leading to readers wanting to accompany the heroes on their treks back in time to find the medallion segments and love.

Alright, but mostly the same
By Staci A. Cahill
The book was good but it reminded me too much of Cast's writings for her vampyre series the house of night....Too many things seemed similar to her time raiders book. Like the sapphire blue tattoo's marking the High priestesses and her druids and also the Goddess seemed alot more like her goddess in her novels as well. Also in the area where she has her characters soul shatter just like in the House of Night. As well as having her character refer to herself as getting all "snotty nosed and thats not attractive right now" is exactly the same wat Zoey is reffered to often in the House of Night. I just think that she should have changed it up a little bit instead of using the same material for a completely different book in different type of series.

Interesting time travel romance
By Amazon Customer
While this was not my favorite time travel romance, it's up there. I liked how the main characters were so strong in spirit and their stories intertwined with celtic history and lore. I really enjoyed this book

Pretty boring
By Francis M Gramlich
I tend to love these types of stories, but this one just didn't do it for me. The main characters had no chemistry. Their interactions were dull and repetitive. The situation that brought them together seemed a bit overly contrived. The writing in general was flat and lifeless. I hate to be so brutally honest, but I was pretty disappointed.

Stubborness Meets Love with Humor
By Amazon Customer
"The Marriage Bargain" by Angel Moore is a story with two very stubborn characters who are determined to do what they think is best. Because of these stubbornness each show there are moments of comical misunderstandings.

This is also a story that ties in with "Conveniently Wed" as fear as it is in the same town and the heroines are sisters. I can't wait for the final sisters story to come out for Jasmine sounds like a character in of herself.

I loved one message that sometimes we are the only love of God a person sees so we must always show that love regardless of what the consequences might be. I hope we see more of the secondary character who was touched this way and what happens in that characters life.

A wonderful book that made me laugh and cry. A book I would recommend to all who love historical romance that are clean, uplifting and filed with God's love.

Great series
By Deloris
This was a good book. It was 1 in a series called Perfect, Wyoming. The first book in the series was Special Agent's Perfect Cover by Marie Ferrarella where Micah Graysons character was introduced, however the books story line was not based on his character. . In the book Micah learned of the death of his first love, Johanna Tate while staying in a pristine, upscale hotel room watching the news on tv. Micahs story was followed up in Mercenary's Perfect Mission by Carla Cassidy. However in this book it states that Micah learned of the death of Johanna Tate while watching the news in a coffee shop in Kansas. Two totally versions-- I have to wonder if the the author read the first book in the series before she wrote Micahs story. Maybe I am being too picky but from the moment Micahs character was introduced in that pristine, upscale hotel room I have waited for his story. It is a little irritating when books give conflicting info. If I am going to spend my money and my time on a book I think the authors should be sure the story lines don't conflict. Otherwise terrific book and I enjoyed the entire series. A good read.

Mercenary's Perfect Mission
By Amazon Customer
This is first read by Carla Cassidy and I must say very well done. I was from first page and until the last page. Micah was hero, warrior and a lover all rolled into one. His life started out bad by being from totally dysfunctional family to include his twin brother most of all. He was an honorable man who made sound choices by joining the military's elite force. Olivia who also had a dysfunctional childhood was sweet loving parent when they met the attraction evident. This story had intrigue, romance and mystery. Even at last page you aren't sure how it's going to end. I am not sure if there's another book to show an ending with them together. This leaves me wanting more.

Missing an ending
By Amazon Customer
I enjoyed the Perfect, Wyoming series. I enjoyed the Mercenary's Perfect Mission right up to the end. I felt like I had ordered a tiramisu only to discover that the espresso had been omitted. Still a rich desert but not quite up to what was expected. I went on line and kept looking for the next book, the one that will wind up the story line but so far the closest I could get is the Vengeance, Texas book which deals with Micha and Samuel's sisters and even that one had a hanging out there ending.
I recommend the series, but be prepared for the disappointing non-ending.
