LEADER OF THE PACK.

Ben Tannen was the undisputed leader of his group of best friends, nicknamed "The Deck." He was the Ace, of course. Heidi Malone was the Joker, and the only female among them. All four men were half in love with her—Ben maybe more than half ....

Still, there had always been a certain tension between the Golden Boy and Heidifromthewrongsideofthetracks. And when he'd offered her money for college tuition, she'd lashed out with her pride—and a bicycle chain.

Fifteen years later, Heidi still owed Ben an apology... and he still held an IOU. He planned to collect and prove to her that they'd make much better lovers than fighters.

Very Highly Recommended!!!
By A Customer
"A scintillating novel that again proves opposites attract. Like magnets hero and heroine come together in a conflagration that threatens to set the pages of FOUR MEN AND A LADY on fire, blazing with passion and fueled with larger then life characters. A delight to read a story that features relationships based on friendship between four men and a woman. Especially when told in high school day's flashbacks that relate the insecurities, challenges, and doubts of teenagers caught in the vortex of the quantum leap from adolescents to adulthood. Written with empathy and wit, it is obvious that Alison Kent draws on life experiences and relates them in a manner that endears and edifies. Attend the reunion -- be a fly on the wall -- you don't want to miss one minute of the fun and action."

Don't miss one of the best books of 1999!
By A Customer
Alison Kent has created five unique, real people you will swear you knew in high school. She gets it all right; from the skillfully done flashbacks, and the completely natural and humorous dialogue between friends, to the emotionally charged passion between Ben and Heidi. FOUR MEN AND A LADY is a romantic masterpiece and a trip down memory lane that will have you laughing and shedding a few tears. Don't miss one of the best books of 1999!!

Good Read...
By Sunflower0904
I read this book in one day. It had all the necessary bits to make it good. A decent story, believable characters, and a nice setting that all flowed nicely. A good, suspenseful romance for the beach or for those rainy afternoons on your couch.

By Curmudgeon
This book did not grab me the way most of hers have. Then I read on one page the heroine had no family since her mother had died several years before.. And three pages later her father was dead but her mother lived in Taos???

Awesome book -- liked revisiting Conard County!!
By Roxanna Smith
I have read books about the previous generation of characters in Conard County. It was great to revisit them - although the focus was on the "Next Generation", there was some about the "original" characters to be interesting. This book was well-written & hard to put down. Very enjoyable & will look forward to reading additional books with Conard County characters.

A fun ghost story
By Amazon Customer
Once I got past the kid on the cover (who totally does not fit the description of the hero, why do publishers insist on doing this?!) I really enjoyed this book. I'm not normally a fan of paranormal so I had a few moments of doubt when I realized the heroine is a ghost, lol, but it's really well done. Jared inherits a house and moves in only to learn it's inhabited by Rachel, who was murdered by her husband a hundred years ago and is trapped in the house by a curse.

Two thirds five star!
By Jean DeVilbiss
This is the season of good will... but ouch. The first two stories in this book are fine - well written, entertaining etc. The third story is NOT.
I have rarely read a story so full of contradictions and cliches. Are there no such thing as EDITORS anymore? The first two stories can not carry the third. Well, I can say parts were definitely entertaining, as in I laughed so much, I cried. (e.g. "He could no longer remember the color of Jocelyn's caramel eyes" DUH how about caramel???) Sorry to be so unjolly but that third one is a real stinker.

Pleasant Stories by Three Writers
By JJares
CHRISTMAS in RED WILLOW (Cheryl St. John) In order to save her grandfather's old church from destruction, Chloe Hanley had 5 weeks to organize church members and find a master craftsman to oversee the interior and exterior work.

Although one brother was leading the charge to have the church torn down and replaced with a hotel, Chloe eventually approached another brother to help her. Knowing that Owen Reardon would have trouble within his family for taking an opposing side from his brother, Chloe told him that she would understand if he chose not to get involved.

I'd just finished a book by Cheryl St. John that was lively and very entertaining; this really was a let-down. However, it is probably unfair to compare a novel with the limitations of a short story.

THE SHERIFF'S HOUSEKEEPER BRIDE (Jenna Kernan) Trying to avoid a difficulty on the railroad (no money for a ticket), Eliza Flannery slipped into the persona of the person a man was waiting for at the station. Unfortunately, Eliza had no idea what the role was or that she'd just blundered into the town sheriff (and former Texas Ranger).

This story was cleverly done (especially all the ways Eliza avoided showing she had no idea how to cook). I enjoyed it.

WEARING the RANCHER'S RING (Charlene Sands) Life on farms and ranches must have been very lonely. This author does a good job of explaining how lonely people could become -- the toil was endless. A stranger (Cooper Garnett) is shot and near death when her ranch hands bring him to widow Rachel Bodine's house. Fortunately for Cooper, Rachel was the daughter of a physician and she was able to save his life.

There was something I didn't like about this story. Cooper lost exactly what marrying Rachel would bring back to him. It was just a bit too coincidental for my taste. You may feel differently.
3.5 stars for the book

Just OK

In, Christmas in Red Willow: Chloe Hanley is given only 6 weeks to find the money and the labor to renovate her grandfather’s historic church or the property will be torn down to build a hotel by order of Richard Reardon and the town council. She turns to Owen Reardon, Richards brother and carpenter, for help. Together with a small group of volunteers, they are determined to finish the project in time for “Christmas in Red Willow.

In :The Sheriff’s Housekeeping Bride, Eliza Flannery is on the run from the law for a theft from her last employer that she didn't commit, when she decides to pose as Mrs. Guntherson, the new housekeeper Trent Foerster advertised for! Little does Chloe know, Trent is Butte’s sheriff. Trent is both frustrated and drawn to this beautiful woman, then the real Mrs. Guntherson arrives on the scene and sparks fly.

In: Wearing the Rancher’s Ring, Struggling widow Rachel Bodine nurses a wounded man found on her land. The attraction is strong, but she and Cooper have issues from his past that could keep them apart.

All are just OK reads, nothing GR8!

At first it seemed that the sound of the siren wasn't even penetrating the driver's mind.

Either that, or the Lexus intended to race him all the way across the lower portion of the state to the city of Naples, Jesse Crane thought irritably.

It was natural to speed out here—it felt like one of the world's longest, strangest drives, with mile after mile of grass and muck and canal, interspersed by a gas station or tackle shop here or there, the airboat rides, and the Miccosukee camps.

But after you passed the casino, heading west, traces of civilization became few and far between. Despite that, the road was a treacherous one. Impatient drivers trying to pass had caused many a traffic fatality.

He overlooked it when someone seemed competent and was going a rational number of miles over the limit.

But this Lexus…

At last the driver seemed to become aware that he was trailing, the siren blazing. The Lexus pulled over on the embankment.

As Jesse pulled his cruiser off on the shoulder, he saw a blond head dipping—the occupant was obviously searching for the registration. Or a gun? There were plenty of toughs who made it out to this section of the world, because there was enough godforsaken space out here for all manner of things to go on. He trod carefully. He was a man who always trod carefully.

As he approached the car, the window came down and a blond head appeared. He was startled, faltering for a fraction of a second.

The woman was stunning. Not just attractive. Stunning. She had the kind of golden beauty that was almost spellbinding. Blond hair that caught the daylight. Delicate features. Huge eyes that reflected a multitude of colors: green, brown, rimmed with gray. Sweeping lashes. Full lips, colored in shell-pink gloss. Perfect for her light complexion and hair.

"Was I speeding?" She sounded as if he were merely a distraction in her important life.

Yeah, the kind of beauty that was almost spellbinding. But there was also something about her that was irritating as hell!

The soft sound of a splash drew his attention. Her head jerked around, and she shuddered as they both looked toward the canal. A small alligator had left its sunning spot on the high mud and slipped into the water.

Then she turned back to him and gave him her full attention. She studied him for a moment. "Is this…a joke?"

"No, ma'am. No joke," he said curtly. "License and registration, please."

"Was I speeding?" she asked again, and her seriousness was well done, especially after her earlier remark.

"Speeding? Oh, yeah," he said. "License and registration, please."

"Surely I wasn't going that fast," she said. She was staring at him, not distracted anymore, and frowning. "Are you really a cop?" she demanded suddenly.

"Yes."

She twisted around. "That's not a Metro-Dade car."

"No, I'm not Metro-Dade."

"Then—"

"Miccosukee. Indian police," he said curtly.

"Indian police?" she said, and looked back to him. His temper rose. He felt as if he might as well have said play police, or pretend police.

"This is my jurisdiction," he said curtly. "One more time. License and registration."

She gritted her teeth, staring at him, antagonism replacing the curiosity in her eyes. Then, every movement irate, she dug into the glove compartment. "Registration," she snapped, handing him the document.

"And license," he said politely.

"Yes, of course. I need to get it."

"Do you know how fast you were going?"

"Um…not that far over the speed limit, surely?"

"Way over," he told her. "See that sign? It says fifty-five. You were topping that by thirty miles an hour."

"I'm sorry," she said. "It didn't feel like I was going that fast."

She dug in her handbag, which was tightly packed and jumbled, in contrast to the businesslike appearance of the pale blue jacket she wore over a tailored shirt. He began writing the ticket. She produced her license. He kept writing. Her fingers, long, elegant, curled tightly around the steering wheel. "I don't know what's waiting for you in Naples, Miss Fortier, but it's not worth dying for. And if you're not worried about killing yourself, try to remember that you could kill someone else. Slow down on this road."

"I still don't believe I was going that fast," she murmured.

"Trust me, you were," he assured her curtly. He didn't know why she was getting beneath his skin to such a degree. She was passing through. Lots of people tried to speed their way through, east to west, west to east, completely careless of their surroundings, immune to the fact that the populations of Seminoles and Mic-cosukees in the area might be small, but they existed.

And their lives were as important as any others.

"Fine, then," she murmured, as if barely aware of him, just anxious to be on her way.

"Hey!" He demanded her attention.

She blinked, staring at him. She definitely seemed distracted. And yet, when she stared at him, it was with a strange interest. As if she wanted to listen but somehow couldn't.

"Slow down," he repeated softly and firmly.

She nodded curtly and reached out, accepting her license and registration back, along with the ticket he had written.

Then she shook her head slightly, trying to control her temper. "Thanks," she muttered.

"I'm a real cop, and it's a real ticket, Ms. Fortier."

"Yes, thank you. I'll pay it, with real money," she said sweetly.

He forced a grim smile in return. Spoiled little rich girl, heading from the playgrounds of Miami Beach to the playgrounds of the western coast of the state.

He tipped his hat, grateful that she couldn't know what he was thinking. His sunglasses were darkly tinted, well able to hide his thoughts. "Good day, Miss Fortier."

He turned to leave. "Jerk!" he heard her mutter. He stiffened, straightened, turned back. "Pardon? Did you say something?" he asked politely. She forced a smile. "I said good day to you, too, Officer."

"That's what I thought you said," he told her, turning to go. "Bitch," he murmured beneath his breath.

Or, at least, he thought he'd murmured beneath his breath.

"What did you say?" she demanded sharply.

He turned back. "I said we should both have a lovely day. One big old wonderful, lovely day. Take care, Ms. Fortier."

He proceeded back to his car.

The Lexus slid back onto the road.

He followed it for a good twenty miles. And she knew it. She drove the speed limit.

Not a mile under.

Not a mile over.

The dash phone buzzed softly. He hit the answer button. "Hey, Chief. What's up? Some good ol' boy beating up on his wife again?" He spoke evenly, hoping that was all it was. Too often, out here, it was something else. Something that seldom had to do with his people, his work. The Everglades was a beautiful place for those who loved nature, but pure temptation for those who chose to commit certain crimes.

Over the distance, Emmy sighed. "Nope, just a call from Lars. He wants you to have lunch with him at the new fish place just east of the casino next Friday."

"Tell him sure," Jesse said. "See you soon. Time for me to call it a day."

Clayton Harrison's place was just up ahead. The driveway wasn't easily discernible from the trail, but Jesse knew right where it was. He took a sharp left, turned around and headed back.

He was certain that, as he did so, the Lexus once again picked up speed.

Lorena Fortier set down her pen, sighed, stood and stretched. She left her desk and walked to the door that led out to the hallway in the staff quarters of Harry's Alligator Farm and Museum. She hesitated, looked both ways, then walked down the shadowy hallway. Dim night-lights showed the signs on the various doors she passed.

Her second full day on the job. And her second day of living a deception. She thought about Naples and Marco Island. If only one of those lovely beach communities had been her destination.

She felt herself bristling again as she remembered being stopped the day before by the Miccosukee officer. She had been speeding, and she should have slowed down. It was just that her mind had been racing, and her foot had apparently gone along with it.

And the man who had stopped her.

She felt an odd little tremor shoot through her. He'd just been so startling, and then even a little frightening. For the good or bad, she couldn't remember anyone who had made such an impression on her in a long time. His appearance had been so striking, not at all what she expected from a police officer.

She had apparently made an impression on him, as well. Rich bitch, no care for anything local…

She gave herself a shake. Forget it! Move on. Concentrate on the matter at hand!

Large letters on the third door down read Dr. Michael Preston, Research.

She hesitated, then tried the knob. The door, as she had expected, was locked. She slipped her hand into the pocket of her lab coat, curling her fingers around the small lock pick she carried. She was about to work the door open when she heard voices coming from the far end of the hallway.

"So how are the tours going, Michael?" It was her new boss, Harry Rogers, speaking. He was a huge man, with a smile as wide as his belly.

Dr. Michael Preston replied with forced enthusiasm.

"Great!"

"I know that you're a researcher, Michael, but part of my dream here is to educate people about reptiles."

"I don't mind the tours. I think I'm pretty good at conveying what we're doing."

Okay, so what did she do now? Lorena wondered. She was new at this whole secret-investigation thing. Should she run back down the hall and into her own office? Or should she bluff it out, walk on down the hall to meet the two of them and ask some kind of lame question?

Running would be insane. They might see her. She would have to bluff.

"Harry, Dr. Preston!" she called, smiling and starting toward them.

"You're the boss, but she calls you 'Harry,' while I'm 'Dr. Preston,'" Michael said to Harry with a groan.

"She knows she can trust me," Harry said, grinning. "She's the new girl on the block—she can't tell yet if you're a dangerously handsome devil, or simply an innocent charmer, a true bookworm."

Lorena laughed softly. "Which is it, Dr. Preston? Are you a devil in disguise? Or a man who is totally trustworthy?" she asked. He was a striking man, not bookish in appearance in the least, considering his reputation as a dedicated researcher, completely passionate about his work. The man was actually the epitome of "tall, dark and handsome," with a wicked grin that could easily seduce a woman into trusting him.

She didn't like the sound of her own laugh, or her question. She tended to be forthright; she wasn't a flirt or a tease, and acting like a coquette felt ridiculous.

But, as she was learning, Dr. Preston was aware of his looks, and more than willing to make use of his natural charm.

He turned it on her now, smiling in her direction, even though he directed his questions to their boss. "What about the lovely Ms. Fortier? Our mystery woman, a glorious golden-haired beauty suddenly landing in this small oasis in the middle of a swamp. Can she be totally trustworthy?" he asked Harry. "Or has she come to seduce our secrets out of us?"

"Well, whatever secrets I have aren't too fascinating, son," Harry said apologetically.

"And I'm afraid my mystery life is rather dull, as well," Lorena said sweetly.

"Were you looking for me?" Harry asked.

"Um…yes. You told me that you had a small gym for the employees. I thought I would take a look at it. If you could just direct me."

"The gym is just past the holding pens. Be careful in the dark. The pens are walled, but you don't want to go getting curious, try to bend over the walls and fall in, you know. My gators are well fed, but they're wild animals, after all. And even though I've got security out there, the guards patrol, and with gators, help can never come fast enough."

"I know to be careful, Harry. Thanks." She flashed them both a smile and turned away, feeling frustrated. Did Preston sleep in his lab?

She returned to her room and changed into bike shorts and a tank top. When she left her room again, she could still hear Harry and Michael talking. They were in Preston's lab.

Maybe the gym wasn't such a bad idea, after all.

She left the staff area and started across the huge compound. There were hundreds of gators here, in various stages of growth. Then there was the special pen with Old Elijah. He was huge, a good fifteen feet. He was never part of any show; he was just there for visitors to look at. Next to him were Pat and Darien, both of them adolescents, five feet in length, the gators that were wrestled for the amusement of the crowds.

Jack Pine, a tall, well-muscled Seminole, was standing by the pens with Hugh Humphrey, a wiry blond handler from Australia. Hugh had experience with Outback crocs, and Harry valued having him. When she walked over, the two men were talking quietly with a tall, white-haired man and a veritable giant.

The white-haired man said goodbye, starting away before Lorena got close enough to be introduced to him.

The big man followed. He seemed to grunt, kind of like the alligators, but she assumed that was his way of saying goodbye.

"Ms. Fortier!" Hugh called to her, seeing her as he turned away from the pair who were leaving.

"Hi there!" she called back as she crossed over to the western arc of the building complex. "Who was that?" she asked.

"Who was who?" Hugh asked.

"The men who just left. Do they work here?"

"No, no. They do work for Harry now and then, but they're totally independent. The old guy is Dr. Thiessen, a local vet, and the Neanderthal is the doc's assistant, John Smith. I should have had Doc stay to meet you, but I didn't see you, and he's always busy. He just checks in with us now and then. Doc Thiessen is a hero among the local kids—he's the only guy out there who can really treat a sick turtle or a ball python. You'll meet him soon enough, I wager. He's something. Also knows cattle, gators—and dogs and cats."

"Ah," she murmured. "The big guy is kind of…big."

"Creepy, is that what you mean?" Hugh asked with a laugh.

"No, just…big."

"And dumb. But he's a good worker. Thiessen needs someone like that. He works with some big animals."

"That's certainly understandable. You guys work with some big animals, too," she reminded them.

Hugh offered a grin. "But we're fit and muscled—perfect specimens of manhood. You're supposed to notice that."

She laughed. "You're both in great shape."

"Thanks," Jack Pine offered. "You're welcome to go on about us if you want, but…how are you enjoying the work so far?"

"So far, things have been quite easy. I know you need a nurse on staff, but I haven't even had to deal with a skinned knee yet."

"But you like the place all right?" Hugh asked.

"Yes, just fine."

"A lot of women would find it incredibly weird," Jack told her, inclining his head in a way that made her feel special. Like Preston, he was an intriguing man. Unlike Preston, there didn't seem to be anything cerebral about the attraction. His hair was dark and slick, his eyes nearly as black as his hair; he was bronzed and built—just as he had said. She had liked him instantly—but warily, as well.

He had proudly shown her when they'd met that he'd lost the pinkie finger on his left hand to a gator when he'd learned to wrestle the big reptiles as a boy growing up at Big Cypress Reservation. He seemed to be fearless.

"I like animals," she said.

"These guys are hardly cute and cuddly," Hugh remarked. As if they'd heard him, a number of the alligators set up a racket. They made the strangest noise, as if they were pigs grunting. The cacophony was eerie. She shivered, then thought about the animal's deadly jaws.

She thought about her reasons for being here. Whether she liked the guys who worked here or not, she had to remember to be wary.

She shivered again, suddenly uneasy about being with either man around the prehistoric predators.

Come to think of it, she thought, she didn't want to be here at all, not at all.

But she had to be. It was that simple. She had to be.

"You both seem to like gators a lot," she said.

"You're wrong."

Ryan Colton's booming, resonant voice filled every available nook and cranny within the small, albeit state-of-the-art, Tulsa PD forensic lab.

"No, I'm not."

Susie Howard, the lab's chief forensic expert, refused to be intimidated and stood her ground, even though a part of her could understand why the homicide detective before her had balked. After all, she'd just told him that the person who had broken into and apparently vandalized one of the ranch's stables—and was possibly responsible for the numerous vandalisms that had occurred prior to this latest one—was his sister, Greta.

But like it or not, Susie thought, evidence was evidence.

Doing her best to sound professional and remain removed—no easy feat in this case—Susie stated the obvious. "You asked me to put a rush on the DNA evidence, so I did. The sample from the Lucky C's crime scene went to the head of the line and that's your answer," she told him, tapping the name that had been generated by her trusty machine after the test had been completed. Greta Colton's prints and DNA were in the system because of the nature of her work.

Frowning, Susie withdrew her well-manicured finger. "I can't help it if you don't like the answer, but that's it. The machine doesn't lie—even if you think that I do," she concluded, her hazel eyes narrowing as she tossed her head. A blond tendril came loose from the tightly wound bun she wore at the back of her neck as she looked up at the six-foot-two detective.

Ryan struggled to keep his temper in check. It had grown very frayed lately. Yelling wasn't going to get him anywhere, he knew that. Especially not with Susie.

But she just couldn't be right.

She couldn't be.

His words were carefully measured as he spoke. "I didn't say you were lying, but there's always the possibility that there's a margin of error."

Which was what he was pinning all his hopes on now. He knew Greta, had watched her grow up. There was no reason he could come up with for why she would do something like this.

"Run the test again," Ryan instructed, his voice leaving no room for argument. "I don't want to tell you your job—"

"Then don't!" Susie retorted.

Ryan continued on the subject as if she hadn't said a single word. "But there was enough blood on that broken window to take several swabs. Run a second sample. And a third if you need to," he added before the forensic expert could protest.

"How many do you want me to run before you accept the results?" Susie challenged.

"Just run the test again," Ryan ordered, doing his best to remain removed from the discussion.

Fat chance of that. The woman who had just told him that the blood belonged to his sister, Greta, was the same woman he had once been seriously involved with. The same woman, after their relationship had become serious, he had deliberately cut off all ties with.

He'd been a Marine back then, home on leave, when their paths had first crossed. They had hit it off instantly—hot and heavy, and very, very serious. He spent every moment he could with her, and she with him. Neither of their families knew about their relationship because they never made time for anyone else. It was as if somehow, subconsciously, they both understood that they were on a timetable. When he received word that he was being deployed overseas again, Susie had naturally been upset, but she'd promised to wait for him no matter how long it took.

That had been the problem. The burden of having someone waiting for him, loving him and praying for his safe return, was just too much for him to carry into battle. The weight of that responsibility threatened to sap away his edge, to blur his focus, and survival depended heavily on focus.

Besides, if he didn't make it back, he knew how that could affect the rest of Susie's life—how it could destroy the rest of her life. He couldn't do anything about the way his family reacted to news like that, but he could do something about Susie.

There was far too much guilt attached to their relationship for him, so he chose the simple way out. He broke things off between them—doing so in a letter rather than in person.

In effect, he had chosen the coward's way out. He never found out how she felt about the breakup because Susie never wrote back. Eventually, he convinced himself that that was for the best and that this was the way things were meant to be. He was meant to be alone.

With that in mind, he struggled to move on, to move forward. After his honorable discharge, he wound up becoming a police detective. In the beginning, it all boiled down to a matter of putting one foot in front of the other. And somehow, while he wasn't looking, six years managed to pass by.

He'd assumed he would never see Susie again. It got a little easier dealing with that with each year that went by.

The sight of Susie walking down the hall at the Tulsa police department one morning four years ago had completely knocked the air right out of him. But after a few seconds, he'd recovered and managed to push on.

For the past four years, they had politely but determinedly ignored one another, pretending not to be aware of the other person's existence whenever they found themselves in the same general vicinity. His cases were such that he found he didn't need any help from the forensic department.

But now, with the vandalism at the Lucky C amped up to a dangerous degree, Ryan resigned himself to the fact that he needed her help. Needed her training and her lab to help him solve this all-too-personal case he had taken on before things went from bad to fatal.

And now the attractive blonde who still sometimes turned up in his dreams had given him an answer that had all but left him numb and speechless. Was this her way of getting even with him for breaking up with her?

No, whatever else he might feel about Susie Howard, he knew that she had a great deal of integrity.

He was allowing his imagination to run away with him, something that didn't happen very often. He would be the first to admit that the situation had made him desperate.

He forced himself to remember that Susie wasn't the kind of person who would let her feelings get in the way of her work—and she certainly wasn't the type to frame an innocent person, no matter how much she might want to because she was in effect jilted by that person's older brother.

That wasn't the way Susie operated. Her sense of honor was something that he'd found admirable about her all those years ago.

Since he knew that Susie wasn't responsible for the results that were damning his sister, that left Ryan clinging to the only possible excuse he had left—that somehow, the periodically calibrated forensic equipment had malfunctioned.

Susie looked as if she was going to continue staunchly refusing to rerun the test. He had to get her to reverse that position.

"Do it for me," he requested, his voice as devoid of emotion as he could possibly render it. "Run the test again."

"Oh, well, if it's for you, sure, I'll run it again." There was more than a touch of sarcasm in Susie's voice. "And if it wasn't for you, I'd still run the test again, just because there seems to be some sort of doubt involved here," she went on to add icily. "I can see why finding out that your sister vandalized the family stables might be upsetting to you, so yes, I'll run the test again," she informed him coldly. "Now, if you don't mind getting out of my lab, I'll get started on that second test."

She turned her back on him, pretending that he was already gone.

She knew he wasn't because she could see his distorted reflection on the surface of her mass spectrometer. The machine was facing her. Her parting words to Ryan were "I'll have someone call you with the results once they're in."

When Ryan's reflection continued to remain exactly where it was, she asked in as disinterested a voice as she could summon, "Is there anything else?"

This had to be said. He knew that. If the air wasn't cleared between them, then she might be sorely tempted not to do her best job. He felt confident she wouldn't manufacture evidence, but he wasn't so sure that she'd bring her A game to the case.

"Yes," he said after a long moment, addressing the words to the back of Susie's head since she wasn't turning around again, "there's something else. I want to apologize for treating you so badly when I broke it off between us. But I did it for you, for your own good."

She almost swung around then, almost fired at him with both barrels, calling him an idiot and a fool—and a liar. Calling him an egotist for using that pathetic excuse when the real reason he had pulled his emotional vanishing act on her was because he'd obviously been afraid of commitment.

Any first-year psychology student would have been able to tell him that.

But she didn't swing around, didn't give Ryan a tongue-lashing and didn't tell him exactly what she thought. What would be the point? He had his lie, which he was holding on to for dear life, and she had moved on.

Or told herself she had.

So she remained facing her workbench, acting as if Ryan hadn't said a single word to her about their past or its abrupt ending.

"I'll have someone call you the minute the second results are in," she repeated.

This time, she saw his reflection retreat and then disappear.

Heard the door to the lab close again.

Only then did she turn around on her stool. "You jerk," Susie murmured, staring at the closed door. Her voice grew louder, more heated with every word she uttered. "You big, self-centered, blind, stupid, stupid jerk."

"Two degrees, six years in college and that's the best you can come up with?" Harold Gould marveled as the tall, thin lab assistant stepped out from the computer tech area where he had been working.

His white lab coat hung like a bland curtain about his all but emaciated frame, giving the impression that it would begin flapping wildly about that same frame at the first sign of a breeze.

Startled, Susie's eyes met those of her junior assistant, who was also a lab intern. The brown eyes continued looking back at her, the assistant never flinching.

"I didn't know anyone else was here," Susie told the intern.

"Obviously. When I saw him walk in I was going to clear my throat in case something private was going to be said. But Colton started talking right away and it sounded kind of personal from the get-go." The look he gave her was sympathetic. "I didn't want to embarrass you."

"You just wanted to eavesdrop, hoping to score some juicy gossip," Susie countered.

She knew how the man operated. Harold Gould knew more about what was going on in the precinct after being here for a little more than three months than some of the twenty-year veterans did. It wasn't only lab procedures that he absorbed faster than a sponge.

The painfully thin shoulders rose and fell quickly, indicating that Harold had no intention of even attempting to contest her take on the situation. They both knew he enjoyed being a font of information, both technical and private.

"Yeah, well, there's that, too," he agreed, and then he tried to set her mind at ease. "Don't worry, I don't have any time to talk to anyone so this isn't going into the rumor mill. And besides, I might be had for a song when it comes to certain things, but don't ever doubt my loyalty."

She liked Harold and was fairly certain that his heart was in the right place. But she'd paid the price for blind faith before and that had made her leery. Harold could just be offering her pretty words to distract her, Susie thought. "If it does hit the rumor mill, I'll know who to come after."

A small, amused smile played across all but nonexistent lips. "Should I be shaking in my shoes now—or wait until later?" he asked her.

"Later," she told him. "We have work to do now." She glanced again at the closed door. "I'm going to have you run the DNA test on the blood this time."

"Really run the test, or…?" He raised one eyebrow, leaving the rest of the sentence unspoken but definitely understood.

Susie wanted to make one thing perfectly clear even as she cut the intern some slack because he was, after all, still relatively new.

"We don't do 'or' here, Harold. We don't even think about 'or.' Just one tiny instance—or even the hint of that kind of impropriety—and everything we've ever done here is going to be viewed as suspect and called into question. The amount of work that would be generated by something like that would be astronomical. Have I made that clear enough for you?"

She didn't want to come off as sounding belligerent, but there should be no question about how procedures were conducted.

"Just kidding, boss lady," Harold told her, raising his hands as a sign of surrender.

"I know. But it doesn't hurt to reiterate how we do things out loud every so often so that we don't ever lose sight of our function here. Because it only has to happen once and suddenly, we'll get our walking papers and be out on the street."

"Understood," Harold assured her. "But even so, you could stand to improve your vocabulary," he told her. "I could work up a whole host of multiple-syllable expletives you could hurl at yon studly homicide detective the next time your paths cross. You don't want to be caught unarmed, do you? Or worse, tongue-tied?" he concluded, pretending to shiver at the very thought of that happening.

"You miss the salient point. I don't want our paths crossing, period" she said, getting to the heart of the matter.

"For that even to be a remote possibility at this police precinct, one of you is going to have to put in for a transfer. Like, to a different city." Harold's shallow complexion seemed to brighten instantly as he thought over possibilities. "Do I get a vote as to which one of you should go?"

Great series.
By Sparkymom
This book is a part of The Coltons of Oklahoma series. Each book is written by a different author and focuses on one of the Colton siblings. I've read all but one of the series books and have enjoyed them. Throughout the series, Ryan, the police detective, had been front and center helping his siblings. Finally, he gets his own story.

Years ago, Ryan walked away from the woman he loved because he thought it was best for her. He never contacted her again until he found himself working in the same building as her. Susie never got over Ryan's betrayal, but still has a bit of a soft spot for helping him. When a body is found on the Colton ranch and Ryan is forced to bring in his sister for questioning, his siblings turn against him leaving only Susie to have his back. Susie believes the evidence is a set up, and she sets out to help Ryan free his sister and prove it. The only question is whether they will be able to keep working together once secrets from their past threaten their future.

This story answers a few questions from the previous books and opens up a whole new set of problems to be solved in the next book. I absolutely can't wait to read Greta's story. The excerpt at the end of this book was totally hot.

Love this series!
By Books And Spoons
I have enjoyed this series since the beginning, but I have to say, I think it is getting better with each installment, as the plot thickens.
Some very odd events have been happening at the ranch, everyone has been mentioning them, but no one thought twice about them, until actual crimes were committed.
Ryan can't believe what the crime scene investigators are telling him, that the evidence leads them to his sister, Greta. It just doesn't make sense. The suspense is high, the evidence is clear, and as it seems that Greta has no alibi for the time of the crimes, the only thing Ryan can do, is to arrest his own sister.
The investigator working on the case, Susie, is the one Ryan has a history with, an old history, but somehow it seems very fresh even now.
As the secrets of the family are unfolding, the evidence saying one thing, and the heart and mind another, Ryan is in a whirlwind of his life. When you add to that the girl he never forgot, the one he still loves, and the secret from their past relationship coming to light, Ryan don't know anymore what to think or do.
I inhaled this story in one sitting. It just pulled me in and took over. I loved the intensity of the investigation, the tension between the old lovers, and as all the secrets are revealed, it suddenly starts to make more sense, all around.
This series has had a strong allure from the start, and the attack on the mother has been going investigation through the series, that now finally starts to have more insights into it. I can hardly wait for the next installment, to see how it all will come to end!
A series filled with charismatic characters, intense suspense, crimes that baffle the police as well as the family, and the happily ever after kind of romance, that melts your heart

Book 3 in Secret Agent series
By Love 2 Read Novels
Book 3 in the Secret Agent series was Brice Whelan's story. We were introduced to him in book 2. After Brice rescues Selena Carter her father (also a CHAIM member) hires him to protect her from those who attacked her clinic Dia Belo. He takes her to his mansion where he knows the security will be tight.

Selena and Brice have always had a deep attraction to one another and she knows she can trust him but she's afraid to tell him what she's thinking because if she's right it could ruin a long-time friendship and also a good man's reputation. Brice knows Selena is hiding something. Is is to protect someone or is she involved with drug cartel?

Book 3 was not as action packed as the previous two books in the series. None of the characters from the previous two books had active roles which was a little disappointing but all in all is was a good read. Would love to see the series continue with the incorporation of previous characters.
Book 1 is Secret Agent Minister, Book 2 is Heart of the Night both excellent books!

Another great suspense!
By M. Palmer
Secret Agent
Book 3

We meet CHAIM secret agent, Brice Whelan in this book. Brice is Italian and lives in Italy and Georgia. Right now he's there trying to win back the respect of the woman he secretly loves after forcing her to leave a very tense situation in Argentina. Their relationship grows tenser after her car is bombed and her father orders that she will be under 24-hour protection with Brice as her bodyguard. She warms up to her college friend after a while, but then things get really tense.

I pretty much figured out "who" from the beginning, but was very interested in following this to see how it all plays out. I liked the romance and how they had a bit of trouble coming together with his job and her independent spirit. Brice was able to rush to her rescue without coming on too strong. I think this should satisfy most readers.

I like how the author uses words from the language and gives each man his own tongue. Pastor Dev from the first book was just plain American and spoke like it. In the second book, I loved Eli's Cajun use of language, and in this book Brice used some Italian talk. It gives each of them a different spin, though they are all wonderful protectors of their women!

Who Can You Trust?
By Nike N. Chillemi
Although the book is part of an action packed series, it also stands alone. CHAIM agent Brice Whelan has been commissioned to go into northern Argentina and get missionary/nurse Selena Carter out.

Since she can remember Selena's always had deep feelings for Brice and think he returns them. However, she won't tell him all she knows about the terrorist attack on the missionary compound in the jungle where she worked. She's afraid it will put an end to all missionary efforts in the area. For his part, Brice is very attracted to Selena, but wonders if he can trust her. Is she part of a drug cartel?

This is a good romantic read, has everything you'd expect and more of a romance novel...like a great deal of action. The author makes the reader care about the story's two main characters.

This book contains three stories: "Reluctant Father" by Diana Palmer, "Rent-A-Husband" by Annette Broadrick, and "The Wedding Wager" by Elizabeth Bevarly. I bought it primarily for the Diana Palmer story, but I really enjoyed the other two as well. It was a great read.
