AS A BRIDE, SHE WAS WORTHLESS

Indeed, Catherine de Severin could offer nothing in the way of power and land. A penniless orphan with a shadowed past, she was not a suitable match for a comte destined to control vast holdings. But Geoffrey Dumont cared not, and would defy anyone—even royalty—who kept his fair Cate from him!

A loving marriage denied her, her memory a blur, Catherine de Severin had accepted her cloistered fate. But when Geoffrey Dumont, her soul-friend and truest love, abducted her from the nunnery, afire with reckless plans for a future together, her heart embraced him with a passion too strong to be denied!

Sweet, but feels incomplete without DUMONT BRIDE
By Robin C.
Though the premise is exciting and the two romantic leads likeable, the countess bride feels more like the bridging book in a trilogy than a work in of its own right.

It seems to begin in the middle: When we first set the scene, Geoff and Catherine are already in love. They have agreed to go their separate ways because Catherine is hardly a suitable bride for a count, but when Cate is threatened and circumstances grant Geoff new freedoms, they find themselves signing betrothal documents instead. Suddenly, battle is on the horizon and they must journey to see the king.

What follows is pages upon pages of vague references to a scandal that never becomes completely clear, and a lot of apologetic scenes between Hero and Heroine as they angst over whether or not to seal their union. Catherine has scandal in her history (how much, even she does not know. Though later on she remembers some of it), and Geoff knows he is making the right choice for himself, but fears subjecting Catharine to the backlash of it. Also, a lot of pagetime is devoted to the continuation of the hero's brother and sister-in-law's story, and an intrigue that's only sort of settled by the end.

Brisbin's characters are likeable and honorable, and the scenes between them are tender and sweet. The resolution we do get is very satisfying for the major romantic couple. But, the ongoing references to a treasonous plot that was barely overthrown years ago - one often implied and never explained - felt frustrating and tedious. And because our Hero and Heroine's initial courtship was "offstage," I felt robbed of some of the fun of a good romance.

Overall, this book may be an excellent centerpiece to the story of the Dumonts and their lady loves. But as a standalone novel, there are too many lose ends and too much offstage action to make it a reccommendale single read.

Heroine needs a better champion
By Melissa
The Countess Bride starts off a bit differently ( the leads are already madly in love), but despite this unique opening this story falls rather flat with only a few moments of real emotional intensity and those are usually because one of the leads is upset with the other or they are arguing with other characters in this story.

Catherine lives with Geoff's family. She has no living relatives and is very close to Geoff's sister-in-law. Catherine has not always resided with them though, she use to live in her brother's household. Apparently the brother and his shady antics are in a previous novel which I have not read, but I gathered that he used Catherine as a pawn.

Even though Geoff is devoted to Catherine, Geoff's older brother wants him to marry a wealthy landed woman and Geoff at first is agreeable to this, in fact Catherine is too. For the first third of this story Geoff's older brother calls all the shots for this couple.

Catherine it seems is in danger; there are mysteries in her past. Catherine actually cannot remember blocks of time from her past but Geoff's older brother has an inkling as to why Catherine may have blocked out certain memories. He keeps much of this to himself, not even informing his brother, who dearly loves Catherine

When Geoff discovers Catherine is in danger he becomes her champion yet these two still are not all together comfortable with their relationship namely due to Geoff's older brother. Geoff is concerned about thwarting him and Catherine does not want to be the wedge between them.

When Catherine's past is brought to light both leads must reconcile their feelings about the events which occurred in her life. Geoff responds with distrust and Catherine is less than honest with her feelings although her actions were easier to understand.

This story was slow going. The leads spend some time apart and get caught up in royal intrigue which almost overshadows the book. Furthermore, Geoff just seemed a puppet of his brother for far too long. It takes a major crisis for him to man up and reach for his own destiny.

Solid read, but loses pace
By Woodbuckley
This is the third in Brisbin's 'bride' series set in the reign of Richard the Lionheart.

It carries the story from the first two involving the de Severin and Dumont families. The traumatic events of The Dumont Bride are driving the tale here of Catherine de Sevrerin and Geoffrey Dumont. Catherine is a wounded heroine, having been a victim from then, now supposedly set to be a nun and sheltered by the guardianship of Christian Dumont and his wife Emalie. The pair have been youthful friends, only now, when Geoffrey reaches his majority and must choose a wife, do they realise they are in love. Christian is fiercely opposed to this and not just for the more obvious reasons involving money, lands and power.

Catherine is returned to the convent, but then a call to arms by the King in France, allows Geoffrey to attempt to make her his bride.

Much tension erupts and keeps the pages turning. Unfortunately our hero and heroine begin to go over and over the same ground and arguments for not going ahead into marriage from their bethrothal. It made Geoffrey a prevaricating fool and made little sense.

A pity, the tension, so well built, just crumbled away. The political intrigues would have been enough.

Outside Antelope Flats, Montana

The abandoned barn loomed out of the rain-soaked landscape, the roof partially gone, a gaping black hole where the doors had once been.

Sheriff Cash McCall pulled his patrol car up next to Humphrey's pickup. Through the blurred thumping of the wipers, Cash could see Humphrey Perkins behind the steering wheel, waiting.

Cash cut the engine and listened to the steady drum of the rain on the patrol car roof, not anxious to go inside that barn. Hadn't he known? Hadn't he always known?

Steeling himself, he pulled up the hood on his raincoat and stepped out of the patrol car. Humphrey didn't move, just watched as Cash walked past his pickup toward the barn.

Five minutes ago, Humphrey had called him. "I found something, Cash." The old farmer had sounded scared, as if wishing someone else was making this call, that someone else had found what had been hidden in the barn. "You know the old Trayton homestead on the north side of the lake?"

Everyone knew the place. The land had been tied up in a family estate for years, the dilapidated house boarded up, the barn falling down. There were No Trespassing signs posted all around the property, but Humphrey owned the land to the north and had always cut through the Trayton place to fish. Seemed that hadn't changed.

"I noticed one of the barn doors had fallen off," Humphrey had said on the phone, voice cracking. "I think you'd better come out here and take a look. It looks like there's a car in there."

Cash stepped from the rain into the cold darkness of the barn. The shape under the large faded canvas tarp was obviously a car. He could see one of the tires. It was flat.

He stood, listening to the rain falling through the hole in the roof patter on the tarp. Clearly the car had been there for a long time. Years.

Wind lifted one corner of the canvas and he saw the back bumper, the Montana State University parking sticker and part of the license plate, MT 6-431. The wind dropped the tattered edge of the tarp, but Cash had seen enough of the plate to know it was the one a statewide search hadn't turned up seven years ago.

He'd been praying it wasn't her car. Not the little red sports car she'd been anxiously awaiting to be delivered.

"When I get my car, I'll take you for a ride," she'd said, flirting with him from the first time he'd met her.

How many times over the years since she'd disappeared had he heard those words echo in his head? "I'll take you for a ride."

He closed his eyes, taking in huge gulps of the ranksmelling barn air. Her car had been within five miles of Antelope Flats all these years? Right under their noses?

The search had centered around Bozeman, where she was last seen. Later, even when it had gone statewide, there wasn't enough manpower to search every old barn or building. Especially in the remote southeastern part of the state.

He tried to breathe. She'd been almost within sight of town? So close all these years?

Cash opened his eyes, scrubbed at them with the heel of his hand, each breath a labor. He turned away and saw Humphrey's huge bulk silhouetted in the barn door, the hood of his dark raincoat pulled up, his arms dangling loose at his sides.

"It's her car, isn't it?" Humphrey said from the doorway.

Cash didn't answer, couldn't. Swallowing back the bile that rose in his throat, he walked through the pouring rain to his patrol car for his camera.

He knew he should call for forensics and the state investigators to come down from Billings. He knew he should wait, do nothing, until they arrived. But he had to know if she was inside that car.

Rain pounded the barn roof and fell through the hole overhead, splattering loudly on top of the covered car as he stepped past Humphrey to aim the camera lens at the scene inside. He took photographs of the car from every angle and the inside of the barn before putting the camera back in the patrol car.

On the way to the barn again, he pulled the pair of latex gloves from his pocket and worked them on his shaking fingers. His nostrils filled with the mildewed odor of the barn as he stepped to one side of the car, picked up the edge of the tarp and pulled.

The heavy canvas slid from the car in a whoosh that echoed through the barn and sent a flock of pigeons flapping out of the rafters, startling him.

The expensive red sports car was discolored, the windows filmed over, too dirty to see inside except for about four inches where the driver's-side window had been lowered.

He stared at the car, his pulse thudding in his ears. It had been summer when she disappeared. She would have had the air-conditioning on. She wouldn't have put the window down while she was driving. Not with her allergies.

The rain fell harder, drumming on the barn roof as several pigeons returned, wings fluttering overhead.

He walked around the car to the other side. The left front fender was dented and scraped, the headlight broken. He stepped closer, the cop in him determined to do this by the book. Kneeling, he took out the small plastic bag and, using his pocket knife, flaked off a piece of the blue paint that had stuck in the chrome of the headlight.

Straightening, he closed the plastic bag, put the knife and bag in his pocket and carefully tried the driver's-side door.

The door groaned open and he leaned down to look inside. The key was in the ignition, her sorority symbol key chain dangling from it along with the new house key—the key to the house she'd told everyone they would be living in after they were married.

The front seat was empty. He left the door open and tried the back. The rear seat was also empty. The car would have been brand-new seven years ago. Which would explain why it was so clean inside.

He started to close the door when he saw something in the crack between the two front seats. He leaned in and picked up a beer cap from the brand she always drank. He started to straighten but noticed something else had fallen in the same space. A matchbook.

Cash held the matchbook up in the dim light. It was from the Dew Drop Inn, a bar in Bozeman, where she'd been attending Montana State University. Inside, three of the matches had been used. He closed the cover and put the matchbook into an evidence bag.

Shutting the back door, he stood for a moment knowing where he had to look next, the one place he'd been dreading.

He moved to the open driver's-side door and reached down beside the front seat for the lever that opened the trunk. He had to grip the top of the door for a moment, steadying himself as he saw the large dark stain on the light-colored carpet floor mat under the steering wheel.

The tarp had kept the inside of the car dry over the years, the inside fairly clean, so he knew the stain on the mat wasn't from water. He knew dried blood when he saw it. The stain was large. Too large.

As he pulled the lever, the trunk popped open with a groan. He drew the small flashlight from his coat pocket and walked toward the rear of the car, the longest walk of his life.

The bodies were always in the trunk.

Taking deep breaths, he lifted the lid and pointed the flashlight beam inside. In that instant, he died a thousand deaths before he saw that what was curled inside wasn't a body. Just a quilt rolled up between a suitcase and the spare.

Cash staggered back from the car, the temporary relief making him weak. Was it possible Jasmine had been on her way to Antelope Flats? All these years he hoped she'd run off to some foreign country to live.

Instead she'd been on her way to Antelope Flats seven years ago. But why? His heart began to pound. To see him?

Or at least that's what someone wanted him to believe. Wanted the state police to believe.

He thought of the blood on the floor mat, the car hidden just miles from his office, from the old house he'd bought that Jasmine called her engagement present.

He rubbed a hand over his face, his throat raw. Jasmine wasn't living the good life in Europe, hadn't just changed her mind about everything and run off to start a new life.

He turned and walked back out into the rain, stopping next to Humphrey's pickup. The older man was sitting in the cab. He rolled down the driver's-side window as Cash approached.

"I'm going to call the state investigators," Cash said, rain echoing off the hood of his jacket. "They're going to want to talk to you."

Humphrey nodded and looked past him to the barn.

"Did you find her?"

Cash shook his head and started toward his patrol car, turning to look back at the barn and the dark shadow of Jasmine's car inside. All those years of trying to forget, trying to put that part of his life behind him.

He realized now that all he'd been doing was waiting. Waiting for the other shoe to drop.

That shoe had finally dropped.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Molly Kilpatrick chucked her clothing into her only suitcase. No time to fold anything.

Since the phone call, she'd been flying around the hotel room, grabbing up her belongings as quickly as possible. She had to skip town. It wouldn't be the first time. Or the last.

She fought back tears, trying hard not to think about Lanny. Her father's old friend was probably dead by now. He shouldn't have taken the time to warn her. He should have saved his own skin. She tried not to think about the horrible sounds she'd heard in the background before the phone went dead.

Even if the police had responded to her anonymous call immediately, they would have gotten there too late. She knew she couldn't have saved Lanny. All she could do was try to save herself.

Zipping the suitcase closed, she slid it off the bed and took one last glance around the room. She'd never owned more than she could fit into one suitcase, never stayed long in one place and made a point of never making friends. This, she knew, was why.

She'd been raised on the run, she thought, as she picked up the baseball cap from the bed and snugged it down on her short, curly blond hair.

As she passed the mirror, she checked herself, adjusting the peach-colored T-shirt over her small round breasts, tucking a pocket back into her worn jeans, glancing down at the old leather sandals before slipping on the sunglasses and picking up her purse.

She could become a chameleon when she needed to, blending into any environment. It was a talent, the one talent she'd learned from her father that she actually appreciated. Especially right now.

She didn't bother to check out since she wasn't registered anyway. For someone like her, getting past a hotel-room lock was a walk in the park.

From experience she knew that entire floors of suites were set aside for high rollers and those rooms got little use even when rented for the night. She was always gone shortly after sunrise and even the couple of times she'd been caught, she'd been able to bluff her way out of it.

She thought about picking up her last check at the café where she'd been working. It wouldn't be enough money to make it worth the risk.

Vince and Angel would find out soon enough that she'd taken off. No reason to alert them yet. It was too much to hope that the police had gotten to Lanny's quick enough to catch the two convicted felons in the act.

No, she could only assume that Vince and Angel had not only gotten away but were looking for her at this very moment. If anything, fifteen years in prison would have made them even more dangerous.

On the way through the hotel, she stopped at one of the slot machines. It was foolish. She should be getting out of there as fast as possible. But superstition was something else she'd gotten from her father. And right now she needed to test her luck to make sure it was still with her.

She dropped a quarter into the slot machine and pulled the handle. The cylinder spun, stopping on first one bar, then another and for a moment she thought she might hit the big jackpot, but the third bar blurred past.

A handful of quarters jangled into the metal tray anyway. She scooped them up. Not as lucky as she had hoped but still better than nothing, she thought as she shoved the quarters into her jeans pocket, picked up her suitcase and headed for the exit.

As she moved through the noisy casino, she looked straight ahead but noticed everything, the hectic movement of gamblers pulling one-armed bandits, change girls stopping to hand out rolls of coins, cocktail waitresses weaving through the crowds with trays of drinks.

Goodbye Vegas, she thought as she cleared the doorless opening and stepped from the air-conditioned casino into the hot desert night. She breathed in the scents, knowing she wouldn't be back here, not even sure she would be alive tomorrow. She had no idea where she would go or what she would do but it wasn't as if she hadn't done this for as long as she could remember.

As she headed toward her car parked in the huge lot, a white-haired couple came out of their RV, a homeless man cut through the cars toward the busy street and a handful of teenagers rolled through the glittering Vegas night on skateboards.

There was no one else around. But still she studied her car under the parking lot lights as she neared it. She doubted she had to worry about a car bomb. Vince and Angel preferred the personal touch. Also, they would want her alive. At least temporarily.

She unlocked the trunk of the nondescript tan sedan, put the suitcase in and slammed the lid. As she opened the driver's-side door, she surreptitiously took one quick glance around and climbed in.

Not one car followed her as she wound her way through the lot and exited on a backstreet. She headed down the strip toward Interstate 15, took the first entrance ramp, and saw that she was headed north. It didn't matter where she was headed, she had no idea where she was going to go anyway.

Keeping an eye on her rearview mirror, she left the desert behind. But she knew she wasn't safe, not by any means. Vince and Angel would move heaven and earth to find her.

And they'd kill her when they did.

Captured by a book/author

Purchased my Kindle in March2012. First books ordered were on March22. It was a B. J. Daniels Book. Every book I read of Daniels, I get hooked more and more. "Double Play: Ambushed!/High Caliber Cowboy" was a thrilling suspense- romance. I had to go on and read the rest of the books published during 2011 and 2012. Great reading. Don't miss it as well as "Lassoed", "Rustled", "Stampede" and "Corraled". Already waiting for her newest book. Amazon Kindle books is the place to go for variety and speed. Enjoy.

Intense storyline, likable characters, rushed romance
By Hope This Helps
Rating 3.5 __Contains sexual content (very little is graphic)
Stand alone read. 7th in Cavanaugh Justice series of 29 books.

GOOD READ. Well written, compelling storyline, good descriptive imagery, likable characters, great secondary cast, strong family theme, and the initial sexual relationship is based primarily on the heroine’s loneliness and the hero’s empathy which the author effectively develops into a sweet romance. HOWEVER, the heroine’s involvement is the crime story is a bit unrealistic, the romance is rushed, and throughout the storyline it is implied that the motive of the kidnapper(s) is personal, but then this explanation is abruptly dropped at the end, which detract slightly from the storyline.

THE STORY brings together Detective Dax Cavanaugh, and teacher, Brenda York, when Dax responds to a kidnapping at the exclusive Harwood Academy where Brenda teaches first-grade. Initially suspicious, Dax quickly realizes that Brenda cares deeply about her students, especially neglected six-year-old Annie Tyler, the missing child. Because Brenda is smart, gutsy, and knows Annie better than anyone, Dax allows her to tag along and assist with the case. Gradually Brenda shares her past with Dax, the emotional and physical abuse she suffered as a child, her hasty marriage to get away from her drunken father, and the death of her husband. But she neglects to tell Dax she is carrying her late husbands child, which leaves him feeling betrayed and forces both of them to admit they want a future together (bpl).

OVERALL, a compelling storyline with fallible, complicated characters. CAVANAUGH JUSTICE is a series of 29 books, starting with Racing Against Time (2003).

You may also enjoy the complex characters and storytelling of N. Bruhns, A. Stuart, and E. Palfrey. For good mystery/detective writers you might try J. D. Robb, D. Stabenow, S. Grafton, S. Sala, Gayle Wilson, and Julie Miller.

Hank Night Horse believed in minding his own business except when something better crossed his path. A naked woman was something better.

Technically, Hank was crossing her path. He was about to step out of the trees onto the lakeshore, and she was rising out of the lake onto the far end of the dock, but the breathtaking sight of her made her his business. She was as bold and beautiful as all outdoors, and she was making herself at home. Maybe she hadn't noticed the moonrise, couldn't tell how its white light made her skin gleam like a beacon on the water.

At his side, Phoebe saw her, too, but she knew better than to give their position away without a signal. With all that skin showing, the woman looked edible. Phoebe was trying to decide whether to point or pounce. Hank knew his dog. He couldn't help smiling as the woman turned to reach for a towel hanging over a piling. She was slender but womanly, with a long, sleek back and a sweet little ass. If he moved, if he made the slightest sound, he would kill a perfect moment. It would be a shame to see her…

…stumble, flail, go down on one knee. From graceful to gawky in the blink of an eye, the woman plunged headlong into the lake without a sound issuing from her throat. Hank was stunned.

Phoebe took off like a shot, and their cover was blown.

Fall back, regroup, find new cover.

She had the water, and he had the dog. Excuse my dog. She has no manners. And the woman…

.should have surfaced by now. Maybe the water had her.

Phoebe was paddling to beat hell. Hank skittered sideways down the pine-needle-strewn path until his boots hit the dock, reminding him that whatever he was about to do, the boots had to go.

And then what? He was a man of many talents, but swimming wasn't one of them. If the adoption people had told him Phoebe lived for the water, he would have walked right past her and taken the Chihuahua in the next cage. Instead, he'd saddled himself with a big yellow bitch who thought she was a seal. Or a dolphin. Dolphins could rescue swimmers, couldn't they?

Dive, baby, dive.

Swish! The woman's head broke the water's surface like a popped cork. Phoebe paddled in a circle around her, yapping exuberantly as though she'd scared up some game.

The woman spat a water-filled "Damn!" toward the open lake as Phoebe circled in front of her. "Hey! Where'd you come from?"

"She's with me." The water sprite whirled in Hank's direction. "You okay?"

"Fine. Where did you come from?"

Hank jerked his chin toward his shoulder and the pine woods behind his back. "My dog—Phoebe, get over here—my dog thought I shot you."

The woman laughed. A quick, unexpected burst of pure glee, which Phoebe echoed, adding gruff bass to bright brass.

"Are you coming in, too?"

He hadn't thought it through. Hadn't even realized he was sitting at the end of the dock with one boot half off. "Not if I don't have to. It looked like you fell."

"I did." Eyeing him merrily, she pushed herself closer with one smooth breaststroke. Her pale body glimmered beneath the rippling water. "I have fins for arms and two left feet that want to be part of a tail." She looked over at the dog paddling alongside her. "I'm not dead in the water. Sorry, Phoebe."

"She thought you were flapping your wings. If you really had fins, she wouldn't've bothered."

"But you would have?"

He pulled his boot back on. "The way you went down, I thought you'd had a heart attack or something."

"Klutz attack." She bobbed in place now, her arms stirring the water just beneath the surface. She made not going under look deceptively easy. "The water's fine once you get used to it. Now that I'm back in I wouldn't mind company."

"You've got some." He glanced straight down. Booted feet dangled over dark water. Damn. He felt like he was the one caught with his pants down. Had to get up now. He'd recover his dignity once he had something solid underfoot. Needed something to hang on to, and words were all he had. Keep talking. "That dog won't hunt, but she sure loves to swim."

"And you?"

He scooted toward the piling. "I'm not givin' up the best seat in the house." Until I can grab that post.

"So you're one of those guys who'd rather look than leap."

"I'm one of those guys who'd rather watch than drown."

There was that laugh again, warm and husky, like an instrument played well and often. "And you were going to save me exactly how?"

"By throwin' you a life boot." He smiled, more for his hand striking the post than his wit striking her funny.

"No need to." Her voice echoed in the night. "My feet are touching bottom."

"You serious?"

"If I stood up, the water would only be up to my waist."

"From what I saw, that would make it about two feet deep."

"Come try it out." She dared him with a wicked, deep-throated chuckle. "Bring your depth finder."

What a sight. The strange woman and the dog he fed every damn day were treading in tandem, two against one. Phoebe should have known better.

"I've got a measuring stick." Hank grinned. "But it retracts in the cold."

"Speaking of cold…" She hooked her arm over Phoebe's shoulders. "If you're not going to join us, I'd like to take another stab at getting out."

Post in hand, he stood. "My feet are touching bottom."

"Not mine."

"Yours is wet." He laid his hand on the towel she'd left hanging over the post. "Bring it up here and I'll dry it for you."

"One free look is all you get, cowboy. A second will cost you."

"How much?"

With the pounding of her fist she sent a waterspout into his face. He staggered back as Phoebe bounded onto the lakeshore.

"Damn! You must have ice water in your veins, woman."

"Warm hands, cold heart. Go back where you came from, please." She assumed a witchy pitch. "And your little dog, too."

If he could've, he would've. Back to the little house in the North Dakota hills where he'd grown up, where his brother lived with his wife and kids, and where the only water anybody had to worry about was spring runoff. Even though he liked the Black Hills—what red-blooded Lakota didn't?—he wasn't big on weddings or wild women. But Hank Night Horse was a man who kept his word.

He touched the brim of his hat. "Nice meeting you."

So this was what a real wedding was all about.

Hank scanned the schedule he'd been handed at the Hilltop Lodge reception desk along with the key to a room with "a great view of the lake." He'd told Scott—the host, according to the badge on the blue jacket—he'd already had a great view at the lake. Scott had promised him an even better one at sunrise, and Hank said he wouldn't miss it. But a wedding was something else. He'd witnessed a few horseback weddings sandwiched between rodeo events, and he'd stood up for one of his cousins in front of a judge, but he'd never actually watched a guy jump through so many hoops just to trade promises.

Damn. A three-day schedule? His friend had claimed to be done with weekend-event schedules now that he'd hung up his spurs, but you'd never know it by the list Hank was looking at now. Social hour, wedding rehearsal, rehearsal dinner. He had to laugh at the thought of a rodeo cowboy publicly practicing his walk down the aisle. The sound of Western-boot heels crossing the wood floor brought the picture to life.

"What's so funny, Horse?" Zach Beaudry clapped a hand on Hank's shoulder. "You laughin' at me? You wait till it's your turn."

"For this?" Grinning, Hank turned, brandishing the flower-flocked paper beneath his friend's nose. "If you don't draw a number, you don't take a turn."

"My advice?" Zach snatched the schedule and traded it for a handshake. "Take a number. You don't wanna miss the ride of a lifetime."

"Here's two, just for you. Number one, I patch you cowboys up for a living. I know all about that ride of a lifetime. And number two…" Hank gave his starry-eyed friend a loose-fisted tap in the chest. No man wore his heart on his sleeve quite like a lovesick cowboy. "Nobody's askin' you for advice this weekend, Beaudry. It's like asking the guy holding the trophy how he feels about winning."

"Damn, you're a smart-ass. Be careful you don't outsmart yourself. Come meet my family."

Hank followed Zach through a lobby full of rustic pine furniture, leather upholstery, and glass-eyed trophy heads. Rough-hewn beams supported the towering ceiling, and a fieldstone fireplace dominated one wall. They passed through a timber-framed archway into a huge dining room—bar at one end, dance floor at the other, rectangular tables scattered in between—flanked by enormous windows overlooking the lake. Hank wondered whether the shoreline was visible from the terrace beyond the massive glass doors. According to the plaque in the front entry, the lodge and the lakefront were products of a Depressionera Federal construction project, and everything about them was rough-hewn, but grand.

"This is my bride," Zach was saying, and Hank turned from the windows to the woman linking arms with her man. "Annie, Hank Night Horse."

She was small and pretty, and her smile seemed a little too familiar. But the way it danced in her blue eyes didn't connect, didn't feel like it had anything to do with him. And her curly golden ponytail looked bone-dry. Hank held his breath and offered a handshake.

"Our wedding singer," the bride said in a soft, shy voice. "Thank you for coming, Hank."

"Sure." And relieved. He was sure he'd never heard the voice before, so he looked his buddy in the eye and smiled. "You did well, Beaudry."

"I did, didn't I?" Zach put his arm around his intended. "She's got a sister."

"You don't say." Hank lifted one shoulder. "I'm willing to sing for a piece of your wedding cake, but that's as far as I go."

"I'm just sayin', you got a great solo voice, man, but that solo livin' gets old."

"I'll bet it does. I know I don't like to go anywhere without Phoebe."

"She's here? Phoebe's here?" Zach's face lit up like a kid who smelled puppy. "Annie, if we can't get married on horseback, how 'bout we put Phoebe in the wedding party? She could carry the rings. She's like the physician's assistant's assistant. Hank's pretty good with his hands, but Phoebe's got heart. He's stitchin' a guy up, she's lovin' him up like only man's best friend knows how to do. Helps you cowboy up so you can climb back on another bull."

"He can't," Ann assured Hank. "We wrote it into the contract."

"That's good, 'cause I'm tired of sewing him up and watching him rip out my stitches in the next go-round."

"Where's Phoebe?" Zach demanded. "I'll bet she's not tired of me."

"She's outside. Caused me some trouble, so she's in the doghouse."

"No way. You tell Phoebe she can—" Zach glanced past Hank and gave a high sign. "Sally! Over here! I want you to meet somebody."

"Can he swim?"

That was the voice. "Sounds like I'm out of my depth again." Hank turned and hit her feet first with a gaze that traveled slowly upward, from the red toenails she'd claimed to be touching bottom to the blue neckline that dipped between pale breasts. He paused, smiled, connected with her eyes—blue, but more vibrant than her sister's—and paid homage again with the touch of his finger to the brim of his hat. Her short blond hair looked freshly fixed. "I like your dress."

"What's that? You like me dressed?"

"That, too. But clothes don't make the woman." He'd already seen what did.

"So true. I didn't catch your name."

"Hank Night Horse."

Ann looked up at Zach. "I have a feeling we missed something."

"I have a feeling this is the sister," Hank said as he offered his hand. Hers was slight and much colder than advertised. He gave it a few extra seconds to take on a little heat. He had plenty to spare.

"And this is the music man." Sounding as cool as her hand felt, Sally looked him straight in the eye. For someone who'd been laughing it up less than an hour ago, she sure wasn't giving him much quarter.

"Hank, Sally Drexler, soon to be my sister-in-law. Have you two already."

"I took Phoebe for a walk right after we pulled in. She tried to retrieve Sally from the lake."

"Aw, you gotta love Phoebe," Zach said cheerfully. "Hank's part of the medical team working the rodeo circuit, and Phoebe's his bedside manner."

Sally's eyes brightened. "I've spent a lot of time around the rodeo circuit. I used to be a stock contractor. Zach delivered the thrills and I furnished the spills. But that was probably before your time."

"I just hand out the pills."

"He does a lot more than that," Zach said. "Pops joints back in place, sets bones, makes the prettiest stitches you ever saw. Plus, he shoes horses on the side."

Sally challenged Hank's credentials with a high-headed smile. "All that and a wedding singer, too?"

"First time." Hank gave Ann an indulgent smile. "I hear brides can be hard to please, and I'm a whatyou-hear-is-what-you-get kind of a guy. I don't mind being the funeral singer. You get no complaints from the star of the show."

"You're listed on the program without the name of the song, which I really wanted…" Ann glanced at Zach. They were already developing their own code.

Good start, Hank thought. He and his former wife had never gotten that far.

"But we agreed to leave it up to you," Zach filled in.

"It's my gift. I want it to be a surprise."

Ann shrugged. "I promise not to complain."

"I promise not to sing 'Streets of Laredo.'" Hank glanced across the room. A handful of people were gathered at the bar. Two women were setting bowls of flowers on the white-draped table. He turned to Sally. "What's your wedding assignment?"

"Maid of honor, of course. It's a plum role. By the way," she reported to her sister, "more gifts were delivered here today. I had the desk clerk store them under lock and key. There's actually one from Dan Tutan."

Tutan. Hank frowned. He hadn't heard the name since he was a kid, when he'd heard it whispered respectfully, sometimes uneasily, eventually contemptuously around the Night Horse home.

Kathleen Eagle is a master of innuendo with characters so clear that they become your friends and neighbors. Sexy before it was 'cool'. Hank Night Horse is a Physicians Assistant and a Farrier. What a combination! He takes care of horses and riders. He mostly travels to rodeo events and moves at his own pace ... until he attends the wedding of a close friend and comes upon Sally swimming nude in a pond. The learn each other over the next few days and .....I'm not telling the rest of the story. Secrets abound. Great read.

But the sultry DJ gets under his skin, and the undeniable attraction that sizzles between them makes the detective uneasy…

He walks the dark alleyways alone, a shadow among shadows—until the night he saves Deborah O'Roarke from an attacker and rediscovers the quiet ache of yearning lodged in his heart. It's been a long time since he's wanted to reach out to someone… But Deborah is an idealistic prosecutor who plays by the rules and abhors vigilantism. Can she come to love her mysterious defender?

From Publishers Weekly
Shamus-winner Gorman's niftily titled new novel opens on a warm summer night in 1961 in Black River Falls, Iowa. Soon after a girl turns up dead at a class reunion party, her drag-racing boyfriend slams into a clay wall at 90 miles an hour. An obvious accident-but then the police find his brake line had been cut. Reluctantly, McCain enters the investigation, which involves jilted girlfriends, unfaithful spouses and a clever, resourceful killer. Besides being a competent, suspenseful mystery with more than a few surprises, this fifth in the series (Save the Last Dance for Me, etc.) is a fascinating time machine, recalling the arcana of a more innocent time (sick jokes, the Maverick TV series, teenagers using the phrase "Daddy-O").
Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Every burg, large or small, is driven by the same human emotions of passion, jealousy, greed, and ambition. These are the hard lessons young lawyer Sam McCain has absorbed since he returned to his hometown, Black River Falls, Iowa, in 1961 to eke out a meager living as a lawyer and part-time investigator. When young Sara Griffin, troubled daughter of a prominent family, is murdered at a party, Sam is hired to defend the primary suspect, local bad boy David Egan. Corrupt Sheriff Cliffie Sykes pins the Griffin murder on Egan; then Egan dies under mysterious circumstances while drag racing. McCain feels obligated to clear Egan's name. It's apparent he's unearthed a link to the real killer when a third victim is discovered. The fifth McCain mystery builds on its predecessors as Sam's optimistic naivete is ceaselessly challenged by brutal acts perpetrated in the name of love. But love isn't the real motive; it's trumped by ego and self-preservation. Another fine entry in a wonderful series that deserves a much wider audience. Wes Lukowsky

Enjoyable puzzler
By Joseph P. Menta, Jr.
Not a lot of "edge" to the main character, but there are some nicely subversive plot elements, a well-done romantic subplot, and an interesting early 1960's setting. Not a bad little mystery thriller.

One of Valerie's BEST EVER !!!
By Ruth Ann Smith
What an incredibly powerful story about amnesia and its effects on the person suffering from it and the people that love them. This is a well written story with lots of suspense and romance with interesting and colorful characters. “A Trace of Memory” is one of those hard-to-put-down books!! I loved the ending, and without saying anything to give it away, I will say I wish Emma and Travis had gotten custody of Sissy!!! Enough said, now you will have to read the book to understand! You will not be disappointed as this is another riveting, nail-biting inspirational suspense from Valerie Hansen and I highly recommend it! What a great writer and lovely Christian lady! One of your best ever, Valerie!!! God Bless you!!

Excellent!
By Glenda Parker
This is third book in The Defenders Series. I loved this series and I'm sure you will too. Valerie is one of my favorite authors when it comes to suspense and intrigues, she has a real way of making the book exciting and hard to put her books down. She deals with faith in such a positive way. This book is well written, face paced, and heart warming.

Emma Landers is kidnapped and escapes but there is one major problem; she can't remember anything.
She can't remember how she got amnesia, where she's running from, or who is after her. Hopping a ride in a semi, she spots a truck with a logo she recognizes. The truck is empty and she lets herself in and waits for the driver.

Travis Wright did well at the cattle sale, he stuffs the check into his pocket and is ready to head back to the farm when he finds his ex-girlfriend sitting in the front seat of his truck. Looking pale and frightened, she's unable to answer his questions but begs him to just take her home.

Travis takes her home to the farm but they are followed and their lives become embroiled in a life or death situation. How can they find the answers when the facts are locked away somewhere in her mind. These two people are suffering souls lost in heartbreak and tragedy, they begin a journey to find out what has happened and what God has planned for them. It's a great story!

Downhill slide
By K. Webster
Great idea with a great start to a story that grabs the reader, unfortunately that's about it for positive remarks. Emma Landers starts off as a traumatized, almost catatonic amnesiac and then keeps turning into the standard stubborn and independent heroine that seems to be the standard these days. She keeps having flashes of memory at convenient intervals in the story as well as the typical inept do-nothing police that also seem required. As country people who are supposed to know firearms and of course instead of doing the safe thing they proceed to do the most foolish things of all - like leave the safety of a locked house for going outside with a shooter in the area.

Travis and his aunt are supposed to be capable of protecting Emma and of course do the worst possible job. In one case the bad guy enters the house all the way to Emma's room (which has no door lock - so much for safety) with hiking boots on and gets past everyone. I am sorry, have you ever walked in hiking boots quietly?

In another case of irritation there is a complete lack of what constitutes breaking the law in regards to child safety. I am sorry if you pull a gun on people, are suspected of kidnapping, etc. you will not be allowed to keep custody of a child. This is not the 1800's folks or is Arkansas law that bad?

Sorry, I was really excited to read Valerie Hansen's latest book, but it missed in terms of making me want to read past all the unrealistic events. Really disappointed this time.

Mail order groom...
By J. Bourne
It was an okay read. There was something about this story that kept me reading but I decided there was something else about the dialog that put me off. The characters were likable but there was a stiffness about them that I did not enjoy. It definitely doesn't belong on my keeper shelf.

charming historical western romance
By Virginia Campbell
Historical Western Romance is my favorite genre, and I was utterly charmed by Lisa Plumley's "Mail-Order Groom". The characters are very well-written and interesting. The story line is paced just right, allowing us to discover the little extras about each character while the action builds to a climax. The romance is funny, poignant, and sweetly sensual. Savannah Reed has fled to Morrow Creek, Arizona to escape family scandal and public ridicule. Desperate for respectability and a different last name, she strikes up a relationship with a mail-order groom whom she thinks is the answer to her prayers. Instead, he is a hardened criminal who preys on women seeking husbands. Detective Adam Corwin has an intense interest in seeing the villain brought to justice. He has intercepted and manipulated the correspondence between the unsuspecting Savannah and her villainous beau, who has used Adam's name in his communications with Savannah. When a violent confrontation leaves Adam greatly injured near Savannah's home, she takes him in to care for him, and discovers her letters and photo. She is overjoyed that her mail-order groom has arrived. Adam had become smitten with Savannah by reading her letters over and over and frequently gazing at her photo. Meeting her in person leaves him dazzled, and she is equally affected by her attraction to Adam. Savannah hides her past from Adam, and he hides his real identity in order to pursue his target. Adam and Savannah are two hearts in hiding, each having suffered from a lack of love and care in their lives. Their affection and attraction for each other is immediate and unexpected, leaving them to cautiously make their way to a true and lasting love. Lisa Plumley has written a wonderful western romance with great heart and humor. I look forward to reading the other entries in her "Morrow Creek" series!

Slow and dull
By Sweet Pea
RT rated this story with 4 stars--4 ½ being the highest rating. The RT reviewer wrote this story had plenty of gun-slinging, bloodshed and lovemaking that would keep the readers turning the pages. Makes me wonder if I read the same book. The beginning was fairly good with some action. Gave me hope. But from there forward to page 126 (which was nearly halfway through) not much happened. At least not enough to make me want to finish it. I found this predictable story to be slow (the heroes recovery time) and dull with low impact conflict, with characters using inconsistent voices, (too modern sounding) with characters not all that memorable, with a couple of points I didn't buy. The writing itself wasn't all that bad, but this author has a habit of throwing in ten-dollar words that need a dictionary for clarification. Hey, I have nothing against the dictionary. It's a great book, but it doesn't make for a good romance.
