About the Author
Justine Davis lives on Puget Sound in Washington State, watching big ships and the occasional submarine go by, and sharing the neighborhood with assorted wildlife, including a pair of bald eagles, deer, a bear or two, and a tailless raccoon. In the few hours when she's not planning, plotting, or writing her next book, her favorite things are photography, knitting her way through a huge yarn stash, and driving her restored 1967 Corvette roadster—top down, of course.

Is this really worth it?

Brett Dunbar was at the stage of his morning run where he always doubted it. The stage when even the beauty of his surroundings as the trail paralleled an inlet of Puget Sound didn't help.

His new companion was no help either. He'd thought Cutter would be a distraction at least. That the dog might act as dogs do, slowing to sniff everything in sight, thus allowing him to give in to the urging of his body to slow down, enjoy the morning quiet, make this a nice leisurely stroll. But this dog was acting like a demanding trainer, pushing, prodding, running ahead and turning to wait, subtly implying that Dunbar was slacking off.

"Darned dog," he muttered.

That was what he got for somehow ending up dog-sitting while Quinn and Hayley Foxworth were on their honeymoon.

He kept going as he came out of the thick trees and saw the gleam of the water. Sunrise was coming, heralded by the lightening of the sky across the sound. He knew that he was almost past the tough part, that just about here the endorphins would kick in and he'd hit that pace that was perfect, that seemed as though he could keep going forever. But every time, he had to get through this part first, this section where his entire body screamed at him to stop.

People had told him once he hit forty it would get harder. Now, with his forty-second birthday looming, he had to admit the change wasn't in his pace or his stamina but in the increase in mental discipline it took to keep going. And yet the bottom line never changed. He did this six days a week, rain or shine, for one simple reason. He was a cop, and one day his life could depend on it.

The radiance began to grow from behind the distant ridge of the Cascade Mountains. There were enough remnants remaining from yesterday's storm to give the sun lots of clouds to light up. He watched the show as he ran. Orange, pink and bright blue streaked across the sky, clouds turning from gray to bright white as the light grew stronger. Some clouds stayed darker, appearing like black puffs against the white clouds behind, a stark counterpoint to the brilliant display of sunrise.

Cutter stopped just ahead, where the trail curved away from the water to run below a small group of houses up the hill. The dog's head was up, and if he'd been looking toward the sunrise, Brett might have thought the clever dog was enjoying the view, as silly as that seemed. He'd seen this dog at work—literally—and it wouldn't have surprised him.

But instead Cutter was looking up toward the houses. Intently, his ears as focused as his eyes, not moving at all. His nose was twitching and his ribs moving as he took in deep breaths, no doubt tangy with whatever had caught his attention.

The dog looked at him then, and novice though he was with this, even Brett could see something had changed. He slowed to a stop. The dog was no longer that taunting, teasing physical trainer. Something intense and focused had come into those amber-flecked dark eyes, and Brett suddenly remembered all the times he'd heard the Foxworth people talk about the dog willing people to do something.

As if he'd been waiting to be sure he had Brett's attention, Cutter started up the side path. Brett's brow furrowed. He took that path some days, because it led up to those houses and a sidewalk that was better to run on when the rain was coming down hard. But he'd never taken it in the four days Cutter had been with him, so where had the dog gotten the idea?

He picked up the pace as the animal opened up a lead on him. It wouldn't do for Hayley and Quinn to come home and find out he'd lost their dog.

"Should have put the leash on," he muttered as he started up the hill.

The leash was mainly for other people. While he wasn't huge, Cutter wasn't a small dog. And he tended to draw attention with his striking coloring, black head and shoulders turning to a russet brown over his back and hindquarters. But it was more than just his looks—his very intensity drew people's eyes, and the reaction ranged anywhere from fascinated to wary.

If the dog had been a cop, Brett would have called it command presence. That might be the right term anyway.

The dog never slowed his steady trot even as the path headed up the rise. Brett had to kick up the pace to keep him in sight, and his body registered the hill with quickened breathing and an uptick in heart rate.

By the time he hit the sidewalk, Cutter was already crossing the street. There were only three houses in the little cluster, two on the water-view side of the narrow paved lane, one on the inland side. Brett could see two women in front of the single house where Cutter seemed to be headed. One older, one younger. He hoped neither of them would be frightened by the sudden appearance of a strange dog.

He realized the second woman was familiar. He'd seen her before on his runs that brought him up this way. After years as a cop the cataloging had been instinctive. She was about five-six, nicely female, with light brown hair past her shoulders. Long bangs pushed to one side fell over a brow and nearly covered her right eye. He liked the careless look of it. He'd never been close enough to see her eye color, but he was betting brown. Maybe green. Today she was dressed in jeans and a pale green sweater that hugged those curves nicely.

She was also the reason he'd once caught himself thinking of taking this route on a perfectly dry day, on the chance she might be out working in the garden again, since she did it even in the rain. And that bothered him enough to make sure he never did it. That way lay folly.

Right now she had her arm comfortingly around the older woman, who appeared to need that comforting.

Cutter bounded toward them. The younger woman turned just as the sun cleared the mountains and poured down over the sound, lighting everything in its path. Including the hair he'd thought was simply light brown but now saw was an amazing combination of tan, gleaming gold and a light reddish color that seemed to spark fire to it all. He'd never seen her in sunlight before, he realized, because he usually took this route only if it was raining.

He gave himself an internal shake as Cutter slowed to a walk about ten feet away from them, as if he somehow sensed a running approach might scare them. The older woman was watching the dog warily, so he supposed the dog could have read her body language.

But the younger one was smiling at the dog.

And she had a killer smile.

Cutter had halted a couple of feet in front of the women. He sat, almost primly, ears up, head cocked as if studying them. It was probably the most unthreatening pose he could have taken.

Brett caught up and stopped beside Cutter. The younger woman still had an arm around the older, who, judging by the traces of dampness on her cheeks, had been crying.

He felt an instant stab of wariness. He quashed it. No matter what was going on, it wasn't, thankfully, his business. He wasn't on duty, and this wasn't his jurisdiction.

"Sorry," he said. "We were down on the trail and he got the idea to head up here. Weird, since I've never been up this way with him."

"I've seen you running," the older woman said, sounding relieved. "Every day, I go for my walk downtown." She was smiling now, which relieved him. "My husband likes the cream cheese cinnamon rolls from the bakery, even though they're bad for him."

Brett smiled back. "I like them, too. So I run."

He heard a laugh, a short, pleasant sound that warmed him as much as the winter sun was trying to do. He looked at the other woman then. Close up, that smile was even more potent.

And the eyes were indeed green. A light, clear green that made him think of the first leaves of the spring that wasn't far off.

"I've seen you up here, too," she said. "When it's really wet."

"Trail gets kind of slippery. I break something, my boss won't be happy."

The laugh again. He found himself wishing he were naturally funny, just to keep hearing it. And wondering why Cutter was just sitting there; usually his furry trainer would have been pushing him for a final burst of speed right about now.

"Your boss isn't an understanding sort?" she asked.

"She'd understand, but she's tough. I'd end up stuck behind a desk."

"What is it you do?" the older woman asked.

And there it was, he thought. The answer always made people react strongly. Differently, but they always reacted. Relaxed or became wary. The lines had always been pretty clear-cut: if they relaxed, they were on one side; if they were wary, the other. But the lines were getting blurrier by the day.

And he didn't want to admit to himself that if Green Eyes reacted the wrong way, he was going to be disappointed. Or worse.

Best to get it over with, he thought.

"I'm a detective with the sheriff's office."

To his surprise, it was the older woman who drew back slightly. Green Eyes merely said, "Tough work."

"Sometimes."

"Your dog take off on you often?" she asked, gesturing at Cutter.

He wondered if she was hiding a laugh at the idea a cop's dog wouldn't obey him. He quickly shook his head. "Not mine. Dogsitting."

"How nice of you," the older woman said, seeming to have recovered from whatever had made her react. Or perhaps he'd imagined it.

He didn't think this was the time to try to explain that he hadn't had much choice—the dog had decided. He wasn't sure quite how that had happened. After the wedding reception the dog, still wearing his bow tie as a member of the wedding—ring bearer, a role he had executed flawlessly—had trotted over to his car and simply refused to move.

"Oops," the bride had said. "I think there's been a change of plans."

"Looks that way," Quinn had agreed, with remarkable patience given the way he was looking at his wife, whom he was about to spirit off to parts unknown for a month of newlywed bliss. Bliss Brett had no doubt would last. You could feel it rolling off them.

Next thing he knew, Foxworth's Teague Johnson, who had been going to watch the dog while they were gone, was loading up dog stuff into Brett's car, grinning widely.

They all said it had been Cutter's idea. He'd laughed that off until, after waiting politely, the dog had jumped into the car the moment he opened the door, wiggled into the backseat and settled in comfortably.

And so far, he couldn't deny he'd sort of enjoyed it.

"His owner must be a good friend," the older woman said.

"Yes," Brett said.

"I don't know," the younger woman said, watching Cutter, who was watching her in turn. "He seems quite the gentleman."

"He can be. He can also be the most stubborn critter on the planet. And that's a direct quote from his owner."

"It must be interesting, then," Green Eyes said.

He couldn't help smiling at that. "He's an interesting dog, all right." Then, not sure why, he added, "And more company than I expected."

It was nothing less than true. The dog had been a quiet but solid presence, and even he couldn't deny that the occasional nudge of the dark head or the warmth of the dog curled up beside him on the couch was…comforting. He didn't like admitting that he might need comforting, but there it was.

"May I?" Green Eyes asked, reaching toward Cutter. "Is he all right with strangers touching him?"

Brett looked at the dog, whose attention had never wavered. "I'd say you've passed muster," he said. "Or he wouldn't still be sitting there."

She laughed once more, and he was glad she was focused on the dog, because he couldn't help smiling at the sound of it. It took him a moment to realize that the strange tightness in his face was the result of smiling so much in the past few minutes, something he'd grown long unused to.

"Hello there, boy," she said, petting the dark head. "What's his name?"

"Cutter. At least, that's what his tag said when he showed up."

The woman looked at the boat-shaped blue name tag that hung from the dog's collar, then up at him. "He was lost?"

He nodded. "Hayley—his owner—tried for months to find where he belonged. And by then he'd made it pretty clear he intended to stay."

Green Eyes smiled as the older woman spoke. "Your girlfriend takes in strays, does she?"

"My—" He stopped short. Girlfriend was not a word he'd used in reference to himself for a very long time. "No. No, Hayley's not… She's on her honeymoon. That's why I'm dogsitting."

"Well," Green Eyes said, straightening up from her attentions to the dog, "congratulations to her. And her new husband."

"They deserve it. They're good people."

"I'm Connie Day," the older woman said abruptly. "And this is my niece, Sloan Burke."

"Dunbar," he said automatically, as if he were on duty after all. "Brett Dunbar," he amended awkwardly. Should he offer to shake hands? That was always iffy with some women. And if this was how out of it he was when it came to non-work-related contact with other people, he should probably give it up altogether.

"We should be on our way," he said, letting the fact that he was still a bit sweaty decide the shaking-hands question. Not to mention that he was going to start stiffening up here if he stood around in the chilly air much longer. "It was nice meeting you."

"You, too," Green Eyes—Sloan—said.

"Come on, Cutter. Get back to nagging me to pick up the pace."

She laughed once more, and Brett couldn't help smiling a last time. But maybe it wouldn't be the last. He'd be running this way the next time it rained hard, and this was the Pacific Northwest in winter, so that was never far off at any given time.

But when he turned to go, Cutter didn't move.

"Dog?"

Cutter turned his head to look at him, but his furry backside never left the grass he was sitting on.

"Cutter, let's go." He took a few more steps. Nothing.

He sighed. He dug into his pocket for the leash, tugging a length out from the reel.

"Who was it who said when you get to thinking you're important, try giving orders to someone else's dog?"

Brett's gaze snapped to her face. She was smiling again, widely. And he found himself grinning back. It felt even stranger than the smiling had. He reached out to snap the leash on Cutter's collar. "He's usually pretty good about it. He must just like you."

"But we've only just met."

"He's a quick study."

He couldn't believe himself. He sounded as though he was flirting with her. Not a talent of his at the best of times. He turned back to the dog. Cutter was staring at him intently. Intensely. In a way he never had in the time he'd stayed with him.

He tried to look away. Managed only a second. The dog was still staring at him. He remembered all the jokes that abounded at Foxworth about knowing how sheep felt.

Mesmerized was the word that came to mind.

And then other words popped into his head, spoken by almost everyone at Foxworth at one time or another.

He just gives us that "Fix it!" expression, and we know we 're stuck.

It all came together in a rush, Cutter's sudden and unexpected course change, the older woman's tears, his refusal to leave and now That Look.

Uh-oh, Brett thought. Now what?

Predictable but with some twists. Cutter is amazing. I should have started with Book 1 but didn't know about others when I downloaded Book 5. Will go back to Book 1 when I can find it available from my library ebooks.

Another Cutter Winner
By Nanadeb
I haved loved this series and followed it from the beginning. Cutter is not just a dog. He's an empathetic detective and matchmaker. Justine Davis is remarkable in her ability to balance the canine presence of this story with the mystery, suspense and romance. I have read her work for years and adored her Redstone security series. So, think along those lines but add an amazing dog who could be the puppy offspring if Lassie and Rin Tin Tin had a thing going on. I am dying now for the next installment. Will it be Rafe or Ty or, heaven forbid, Charlie? I'm hoping for Rafe. These books stand alone well but you WILL want to read them all. Especially the first one where Cutter pounces on the scene. These books make me happy. The Foxworth organization helps those are desperate and in need with the help of Cutter, the wonder dog. I'm hoping he has a love interest along the way. Cutter puppies would really make me happy.

Love Cutter
By arthriticmama
Ms. Davis writes suspense that keeps you turning the page. Cutter-dog is a fun animal who would be great to have in the situations she creates. He is a tad unbelievable, but still a good addition for the storyline. I thoroughly enjoy her books, and think most readers would.

London—Spring 1817

'What exactly do you think you are doing?' Mr Rathbone demanded, his deep-blue eyes fixing on her through the wisps of steam rising from the copper bathtub. Dark-brown hair lay damp over his forehead. One drop escaped the thickness of it, sliding down his face, then tracing the edge of his jaw before dropping into the tub.

Laura slid her finger away from the trigger, afraid of accidentally sending a ball through the moneylender's sturdy, wet and very bare torso. She had no intention of killing him, only frightening him into giving back the inventory he'd seized from her uncle Robert. Judging by the hard eyes he fixed on her, he wasn't a man to scare easily.

'Well?' he demanded and she jumped, her nerves as taut as the fabric over the back of a chair.

When she'd slipped into the house determined to face him, she'd expected to find him hunched over his desk counting piles of coins or whatever else it was a moneylender did at night. She hadn't expected to surprise him in his bath with a film of soapy water the only thing standing between her and his modesty. What had seemed like a good plan in the pathetic rooms she shared with her uncle and her mother, when hunger gnawed at her stomach and cold crept in through the broken window, now seemed horrible.

Laura settled her shoulders, shoring up the courage faltering under his steady stare. Beyond this humid room was nothing but ruin and poverty. She had no choice but to continue. 'I demand you return to me the fabric you seized from my uncle.'

The moneylender raised his arms out of the water, disturbing the calm suds, and she caught sight of his flat stomach before the soapy water settled back over it. His hands rested on the curved sides of the tub. They were long but sturdy, like those of the delivery men who used to haul the bolts of cloth off the cart and into her father's draper shop. Mr Rathbone's were smooth and free of calluses, however, and, except for the red of an old cut snaking along one knuckle, the hands of a gentleman.

She took a step back, expecting him to rise from the water and rush at her. He did nothing except study her, as though appraising her market value. 'And who exactly is your uncle?'

Laura swallowed hard. Yes, this was important information to impart if one was to make demands of a naked man. 'Robert Townsend.'

'The gambling draper.' Neither shock nor surprise broke his piercing stare. 'He came to me six months ago in need of a loan to pay a large debt accrued at Mrs Topp's, among many other establishments. In return for my money, he put up the inventory of the draper business as collateral. When he defaulted, I seized the goods, as was my right pursuant to our contract.'

The floor shifted beneath her. Uncle Robert had lost the business. In the past, he'd stolen merchandise from the storeroom, a bolt of silk or a cord of tassel, and sold it to fund his gambling. They were losses to the business, but not the whole business.

It couldn't be gone, not after everything she'd done to hold on to it after her father's death.

Anger overcame her shock and she gripped Uncle Robert's old pistol tighter, her sweating palms making the wood handle stick to her skin. 'I don't believe you. I know how men of your ilk operate, taking advantage of desperate people with high interest rates until they have no choice but to turn everything they own over to your grasping hands.'

Mr Rathbone's eyes narrowed a touch. What the gun and the element of surprise had failed to do, her smear of his character managed to achieve—a reaction.

'If it's proof you require, I'm most happy to oblige.' He pushed up against the edge of the tub and rose.

'Sir!' Laura gasped and shuffled back until the edge of a table caught her hip. She clutched the pistol tighter, unable to tear her eyes away as fat drops poured down his slender body, catching in the ripples of his stomach before falling into the sloshing water of the tub. The drops were not thick enough to offer any semblance of modesty and she struggled to keep her gaze from wandering from his handsome face to the long length of chest, stomach and everything else beneath. Her heart pounded harder than when she'd crept into the house through the open terrace door, then pressed herself deep into the shadows of an alcove beneath the stairs when a maid had passed by.

He lifted one long leg, then the other over the copper tub and stepped dripping on to the small towel on the floor next to it. Over a nearby chair lay a brown banyan of fine silk—French, she guessed, by the subtle pattern in the weave. She expected him to take it up and pull it on over the long expanse of him, but he didn't. Instead he strode past her, through the wide double doors adjoining the dressing-and-bathing room to his bedroom without so much as a second look, as though she were not standing there threatening his life and he was not stark naked and leaving a trail of wet footprints on the wood floor. He headed to the small desk in the opposite corner of the bedroom, near the windows and across from the tall, four-poster bed hung with expensive embroidered curtains. Behind the desk, he opened one of the drawers. Neither the neat stack of papers on top nor the oil lamp on the corner did anything to prevent her from seeing him as Eve must have seen Adam after they'd tasted the apple. Laura could feel her own judgement coming. What she wouldn't give for a lightning bolt from above, or at the very least a large fig leaf.

'Here is the contract we drew up the day he came to see me.' Mr Rathbone came around the desk, holding out the paper.

Laura forced her eyes to meet his. 'Would you please get dressed?'

'This is my house. You broke into it and threatened me. I may stand as I like. Now here is your proof.' The paper fluttered at the end of one stiff, outstretched arm.

In the flickering candlelight she read the list of her uncle's debts laid out in points in the centre of the page. There were more names than just Mrs Topp's. Most were unfamiliar, but a few she recognised from snatches of conversation she'd caught in the hallways of their ramshackle building. Below the terms were Mr Rathbone's signature and that of a witness, a Mr Justin Connor. Next to them sat Uncle Robert's uneven letters, the wide way he wrote his R and T clear.

It wasn't so much his signing away the shop that shocked her, it was the document he'd put his name to. 'Where did you get this paper?'

'Mr Townsend brought it to me the night he came here seeking a loan.'

'This is mine. I wrote this, it was my plan to save our business.'

'It was an excellent one and, combined with the collateral he possessed to secure the loan, the reason I extended him the sum. He could have succeeded, if he hadn't gambled the money away.' He laid the document on the desk. 'Are you quite satisfied?'

'I am.' And we're ruined.

'Good, then you won't need this.' Mr Rathbone grabbed the barrel of the pistol and wrenched it from her hands.

'No,' she cried, as naked as him without the weapon.

'The gun would have done you no good. It was improperly loaded.' He pulled the flint from the hammer and tossed the now-useless weapon on the desk along with the contract. 'Had you fired it, you would have blown your pretty face off.'

She looked to where the weapon lay on the blotter, as useless as her hope and her foolish plans. This morning she had thought her situation couldn't sink any lower. It seemed she had yet to reach the bottom, but all she could think of was her mother. Laura's botched attempt to save them would no doubt land her in gaol. How would her mother survive without her and what would Uncle Robert do to her? 'You should have let me fire it and finish myself.'

He strode past her back to the bathroom. 'You'd have ruined the carpet.'

Anger overcame her sense of loss and she whirled on him. Without concern, he took up the banyan from the chair and slid his strong arms into the sleeves, pulling it shut over his nakedness. Laura's anger flickered, nearly blown out by the sight of his skin caressed by the dark silk, before it flared again. 'I can see all you care about is money.'

He pulled the banyan ties tight across his slim middle. 'I'm a businessman, Miss Townsend. Men interested in financial backing for ventures come to me, as well as those seeking to shore up a struggling business. I offer them finance to be repaid with interest, or, if they default, as your uncle did, I seize their goods and sell them to cover my losses. I have a family and employees whose welfare I must ensure. I am not a charity.'

'No, of course not.' She looked down at the carpet he was so worried about, moving one toe of her worn-out half-boot to trace the swirling curve of a vine. In the brief time she'd spent plotting this ridiculous scheme, she'd failed to work out exactly how she might extricate herself from it without landing in the Old Bailey, or worse. She only hoped the generous nature he spoke of with his family and employees might extend to a very foolish young lady.

'Mr Rathbone, please forgive me for intruding on your privacy and for trying to blacken your good name. I was not in possession of all the facts before I decided to confront you. It seems I was not in possession of my reason either.' She smiled, trying to look the way she imagined a senseless young lady might look, in the hope of saving both her dignity and her freedom. It failed to soften the hard set of Mr Rathbone's mouth.

'Don't play the fool. It's not becoming of a woman of your ingenuity.'

She dropped the smile but not her hope, unwilling to concede defeat. She couldn't, not with her mother shivering at home. 'Then let me offer you a proposal, one that speaks to you as a businessman.'

Mr Rathbone stood silent and she couldn't discern if he planned to listen or to summon a footman to fetch the constable. She didn't give him a chance to answer, hoping her words might at least make him consider her offer and postpone for some time whatever fate he had in mind for her. 'Among the contents of the inventory you seized was a large bolt of cotton woven into a very fine cloth. It's from a special variety, grown in Egypt. It can be rendered, like the Indian kind, into a very fine, almost transparent cloth, but it costs less to produce. I plan to introduce it through Madame Pillet, a modiste to many fashionable and influential ladies. Their orders for the fabric alone could bring in hundreds of pounds. With the profits, I can import more and establish a fine trade. If you return the inventory to me, I'll pay you a portion of the profits until the original debt is settled.'

'I'm afraid I can't entertain your proposal,' he answered without consideration. 'The contents of the draper shop were sold to settle Mr Townsend's debts. I no longer have the bolt of cotton to which you are referring.'

'But you know who has it. You could get it back and we could still reach an arrangement.' 'I cannot.'

'You're leaving us to starve,' she blurted out as even this slim hope dissolved. There was no chance of reviving the business, or doing anything other than sinking into even more degrading poverty.

No sign of sympathy or regret marred the smoothness of his face. 'Your plan has merit, but will not succeed. If the cotton becomes fashionable, those with better connections and more money will race to import it before you can secure more, flooding the market with it and lessening its value.'

'But before then?' she protested meekly.

'I can't afford to gamble my money on the whims of the ton. Nor can you.'

'I can't rely on my uncle Robert if that's what you're thinking. He's got everything out of us he wanted, my father's business and what was left of the money,' she scoffed. 'It won't be long before we see the backside of him. Then what will happen to me and my mother?'

'You must have other family?'

She shook her head. 'No.'

'Friends?'

'Uncle Robert saw to it that they were driven away when he borrowed money from them and never repaid it.' She dropped her hands to her sides in imitation of Mr Rathbone, trying to appear as confident and sure as he did. 'I know what I did tonight was foolish and I never meant to hurt you, I only wanted the merchandise back because I couldn't see the business fail. It took my father years to build and my uncle Robert less than a year to destroy.'

If Philip had passed Miss Townsend on the street, he'd have overlooked her. Forced to stare down the end of a barrel at her, he couldn't miss the stunning light of determination in her round hazel eyes. It was undi-minished by the faint circles darkening the smooth skin underneath them or the slight hollow beneath the high cheekbones. Loose waves of auburn hair hung on either side of her face and down to the shoulders of her worn-out dress. The sad garment hung loose on her. Regular meals would bring back the fullness of her cheeks and the softness of her waist. Her skin was pale, like Arabella's had been, but where illness had faded his late wife's bloom, only hardship dampened the lustre of the lady before him. 'In business, it's always best to keep facts and emotions separate so one does not cloud the other.'

'I'll remember that when I'm starving,' she spat.

'You won't starve. You're too smart.' There was something of life and fight in Miss Townsend, a trait Arabella had not possessed. Despite his annoyance at being disturbed tonight, he admired it too much to see it snuffed out by gaol fever. He swept the pistol from the desk and held it out to her. 'Thank you for an interesting evening, Miss Townsend.'

Hope flooded her cheeks with a wash of pink. 'You're letting me go?'

'Would you prefer I call the constable and have you hauled before the magistrate?'

'No.'

He moved aside and waved his hand at the door. 'Then go.'

In a flutter of threadbare bombazine, she was gone.

'You there, stop.' Justin's voice sounded through the downstairs hall before the thud of the back door hitting the wall and the squeak of the garden gate let Philip know Miss Townsend was away.

A second later Justin came running in, his pistol drawn. 'Are you all right?'

'Quite.' Philip sat down in his chair, rubbing his still-damp chin with his fingers. Miss Townsend had stirred something inside him—not pity, or even lust, though she was pretty. No, it was curiosity, like the first time he'd seen Arabella sitting across his desk next to her father, Dr Hale. Philip hadn't been able to focus on anything but her while Dr Hale had laid out his plans for a small medical school. The school had failed and Dr Hale had lost both his and Philip's money. It was the only time Philip had allowed emotion to guide a business decision.

'Leave it to you to be so cavalier about an intruder threatening you.' Justin lowered the hammer on the pistol.

'She was never a threat.' Philip curled one finger to rub it along his ring finger still missing the plain wedding band he'd buried with Arabella. No, this was nothing like the day he'd met his wife. There was no emotion to touch his love for Arabella, especially not in the guise of this stranger, no matter how intriguing she might appear.

'You look like the devil.' Justin slid the pistol in the holster under his coat.

'It's been a trying day.' He'd thought the headaches of it were over when he'd sunk down into the hot water. He couldn't have been more wrong.

I bought this book because I find it refreshing to read about common business people during the Regency time period and I also like marriage of convenience storylines. This book is very well written and I enjoyed it, but it won't be for everyone's tastes - I know many readers who don't prefer stories with a hero who is grieving over his deceased wife. That is the case in this book and it's an uphill battle for the heroine to win him over and get the hero to push aside his fears after experiencing the loss of his first love. Fortunately, the heroine is no wilting miss and she's up for the challenge!

The summary does a good job of laying out the plot. Laura's uncle has lost their drapers business and she accosts Phillip, who loaned the uncle money, to help her get back part of the business. Phillip denies her request, but approaches her with another offer to become his wife. He thinks that he can make their marriage purely a business arrangement and not risk losing his heart again. He wants a wife to help him with domestic issues, including his infant son, thirteen year old sister and as a helpmate in his business.

Laura and her mother move into Phillip's home and they begin to get to know each other while waiting for a marriage license. Laura's mother and the thirteen-year-old sister immediately hit it off, and Laura also makes herself useful in the running of the home. This is primarily a character driven story with lots of pychological development of both Phillip's and Laura's characters. There's also some intrigue with the lingering threat of Laura's villainous uncle seeking revenge and retribution. And the business plays a major role in their developing relationship and how they come to terms with each other, which I found interesting, but others may be bored by these business details.

This is a well written and interesting book. Everything seems well researched, logical and well planned. My one complaint is Phillip's constant fear of opening his heart to love again. This is a bit overplayed, but it is the major plot device in the book. And I really liked the way Laura confronts him in the end to make him realize the error of his thinking. She remains strong and resilient and doesn't crumble under her own fears. I really struggled between rating this 4 or 5 stars. I ultimately gave it a five because I found it interesting and unique enough that I might read it again.

4.5 Stars Great leads
By Melissa
A Debt Paid in Marriage has very good leads. In fact, it has leads who are rather unique for a historical romance novel. The heroine is a business owner and her hero a money lender.

Taking place outside the ton, A Debt Paid in marriage begins with a memorable opening; Laura Townsend has lost her business or rather her unscrupulous uncle has used it as collateral and now it is owned by moneylender Phillip Rathbone. Laura intends to force him to give her back her business at gun point but she realizes her plan born of anger and desperation is not well thought out when she confronts Phillip.

Hero Phillip is surprised by the lovely Laura. He is an imminently practical man and he realizes he is in need of a wife to take care of his infant daughter and guide his younger sister. He admires Laura’s grit, smarts and innate kindness. He offers a solution to her imminent poverty, he will give her back her business in return for being his wife and business partner and he will take in her mother also. Laura agrees.

Phillip and Laura begin a marriage with many unkowns. Laura has a tendency to believe the worst in Phillip, her interactions with moneylenders have not been positive and she tends to see him as unfeeling. She is surprised several times in this story. She is not so stubborn though as to not seek reconciliation when she is in the wrong.

Phillip is a great character, more interesting than Laura. He is a widower who is gentle with his daughter and keeps a cordial relationship with his former father-in-law. He knows human nature both the good and bad parts. He runs a successful business but has learned some hard lessons along the way. His personality is well explained.

I liked how this couple interacted. They were careful around each other but there was a growing ardor between them. They saw each other as true partners and not just in business but in running a home and raising children. This is a keeper.

Charming!
By Nicole Laverdure
I was looking for a sweet and romantic love story and found A Debt paid in Marriage, written by Georgie Lee. What a beautiful story! This author is very descriptive, so I found it refreshing to follow Philip and Laura's journey. London 1817, Laura Townsend has lost everything, because of her uncle gambling debts. She concocts the plan to invade Philip Rathbone's house, but soon finds him naked in his bath. Philip is a moneylender and businessman, but also a perfect gentleman! In need of a wife, a mother for his son and a friend for his sister Jane, Philip realizes that Laura is the perfect candidate! He will understand her reason and offer her a proposal that she won't be able to resist. Both had suffered tragedy in their past and were very vulnerable. Together, with time, their love will offer them a second chance to love again. I really enjoyed this romantic story, filled with tenderness with a dash of humour.

Adventure-packed and heartfelt
By Carolyn Woolston
This book bowled me over! It's a great adventure story, a moving love story, and I sweated with the hero/heroine every step up that snow-covered, blizzard-blasted mountain. The story involves a desperate rescue mission, a hardened outlaw with nothing to lose, and a spine-of-steel Irish heroine you can't help admiring. I haven't read a
Harlequin historical in years that I liked as well! Don't miss this one.

lie and get help or tell the truth and lose everything
By jewelz
Bridget leaved the family that matter in the snow mountains to get help. Cole was due to be hanged the next morning. Cole agreed to help Bridget if she could get him out of jail. When she surprised him by getting him out there was only one thing he had to do and that was to face his fear and go bak up the mountain to safe her family. Cole fell in love with the courage, and determination Bridget had and found a new reason to live while Bridge fell in love with the outlaw that was due to hang. Their journey up the mountain was anything but easy on both of them as Cole faced his fear Bridget had to learn to trust another man and face her fears as well. I enjoyed how they helped each other not only escape the mountain but the jury and rope by falling in love. Love is about putting her needs aside and helping those you love. Great read for many reasons that is just one of them.

Ransom
By Jonel
Reed creates an intense suspense throughout, brought on by the well plotted tale, rather than by a bunch of explosions. The story was fast paced without rushing, allowing me to enjoy every minute of it. I appreciated the research that went behind putting the correct type of police officers in the correct areas. Reed didn’t allow prevalent stereotypes to stand in the way of a realistic portrayal of events.

Reed has developed some inviting characters to carry this story forward. Both main characters have complicated pasts that shape who they are today in very real & meaningful ways. She builds a sweet romance between them, built on mutual trust and understanding, as well as on circumstance.

This well written novel reads well on its own or as part of the series. It’s one of those tales where both the romance & the suspense stand out but rare inextricably woven together.

Please note that I received a complimentary copy of this work in exchange for an honest review.

Edge of Your Seat Drama
By Faye
When Liz Cantrell receives a message that her sister is being held for ransom she is determined to whatever it takes to get her back, bringing a rare necklace made of uncut diamonds to pay off her sister's captors.

Blake Fallon intercepts the drop, preventing Liz from walking into a trap. He's been on the trail of an infamous diamond smuggler, and with Liz's help he may have everything he needs to break the case wide open.

Will they be able to rescue Liz's sister before it's too late?

A fast moving novel, that I didn't want to put down for even a minute. From beginning to end, I loved it and didn't want to put it down. Filled with action and adventure, with plenty of tension.

Liz and Blake get to see each other in tense situations, where true character shine through. They come to admire each other and trust each other, and their dialog is fantastic!

I love Blake's sense of duty, he is determined to do everything he can to help Liz's sister and catch his crook. I like how Liz relies on her faith, and she challenges Blake to rethink his own. Liz is a trooper, and willing to take risks to save her sister.

A fantastic read with plenty of tension and suspense, the bad guy always seems to be one step ahead of them, and the plot kept me guessing! Well, written and engaging, with plenty of twists and turns, this a book that truly shows off the IBETS team at their best. Highly recommend this book!

Can these two work together to bring down a diamond smuggler?
By Trixi
Blake Fallon & Liz Cantrell have one thing in common…..a ruthless diamond smuggler named Santini!

Terri plunges us right into the action starting with Liz’s attack at her sister’s apartment by one of Santini’s rivals. She has no idea what he’s after & once she escapes, she receives a phone call from her sister Jillian asking her to bring her mom’s jewelry case as instructed to Fort George. What’s inside is more valuable then she realizes, a necklace of uncut diamonds worth millions!
Blake, a US Immigration & Custom Enforcement agent (or ICE for short), stops her at the border of Canada claiming that she’s stolen the necklace, and unless she cooperates with him, will face prison time. What he really wants is Santini & will do whatever is necessary to retain him! He’s bitter and only wants revenge after his partner and best friend was killed years ago. His only hope to catch a thief is Liz, will she agree to join forces to achieve both of their goals?

I liked the balance of edge-of-your-seat suspense and action that kept you on your toes and reading well into the night! I also was able to connect to both Blake and Liz. I enjoyed how they came to trust each other and work through some past issues that had held each of them up from moving forward in their lives. I hadn’t read any of the other Northern Border Patrol books, but this was easy to follow & mentioned two previous characters, Drew and Samantha Kelly. I’m definitely going back to read “Joint Investigation” to learn more about them. The romance was light, but with such an intense case, made the anticipation even better for a happily ever after for these two! You can see the attraction, but it didn’t interfere with the suspense. Well written, vivid scenery, just the right amount of suspense and depth of character made for an enjoyable read!

Sweet yet well paced
By Busybeth
This next installment of the K9 rookies unit is well written and suspenseful. It keeps you guessing who is really the murderer from the original book while capturing your attention about the latest crimes. Lee was released from prison just a few weeks before this story begins. He was framed and found guilty of murder, courtesy of a mentally unbalanced dirty cop. His innocence has been established. Now he's back in his home town and working with his former sweetheart Ellen. Ellen is rich, a rookie K9 cop trying to break free of her overbearing mother and the sponsor of a new facility for training assistance service dogs. The continuing mystery around a spate of murders continues. One of the victims was Lee's sister. Lee and Ellen have a lot of history to work through and get past. But their attraction to each other scares them both. How they realize their true feelings is a sweet yet nerve racking scenario. Well worth the read.

High Sierra Bride
By luv2read
BIG disappointment. I really loved Kernan's Winter Woman and was so looking forward to her latest. Unfortunately, the adventure wasn't really there, the character development and the plot were weak, and the book was just a routine formula of so many other recent romance stories I've read lately. The era in California around the Gold Rush is an amazingly fascinating historical time, and there weren't many historical details in the book. Seems like the author short shrifted this one.

Real loser story
By Sweet Pea
RT was generous giving this story three stars, which usually means it's a so-so story. This one was way off the mark. The writing is awful. It's confusing and hard to follow with awkward sentence structure, making the style rough with poor dialogue transitions. When I have to reread a sentence or paragraph five times and still don't get it, there's something terribly wrong. First the story was dull as they come. It was copywritten in 2009 and the spine wasn't creased. New Book wasn't labeled on the spine either, which told me I'm not the only one who thinks this author's work is not up to standards. If the first two chapters are any indication of what's to come, I can only guess what the rest was like. I just didn't have the stomach or the time. My daughter tried reading it as well, but she was so frustrated with it, she threw it against the wall and broke an antique lamp chimney because of it! I was considering running it over with my car, but it's not worth the $6 it would take to replace it to the library. This book is a classic example why I never buy a book before I read it, otherwise, it would've been long gone in the recycle bin.

Sam .. .
By Cameo
The story started off very sweetly-despite the fighting going on - but hero's like Sam aren't appealing when they praise themselves and dwell on how rich they are, how handsome, and how many girls would drop everything to have dinner with them, and of course they are shocked when the heroine isn't interested in them, at first anyway.
