If there's one thing I hate," Eden mumbled, "it's six o'clock in the morning."

Sunlight poured through the thinly screened windows of the cabin and fell on the wooden floor, the metal bars of her bunk, and her face. The sound of the morning bell echoed dully in her head. Though she'd known that long, clanging ring for only three days, Eden already hated it.

For one fanciful moment, she buried her face under the pillow, imagining herself cuddled in her big four-poster. The Irish-linen sheets would smell ever-so-slightly of lemon. In her airy pastel bedroom, the curtains would be drawn against the morning, the scent of fresh flowers sweetening the air.

The pillowcase smelled of feathers and detergent.

With a grunt, Eden tossed the pillow to the floor, then struggled to sit up. Now that the morning bell had stopped, she could hear the cries of a couple of excited crows. From the cabin directly across the compound came a happy blast of rock music. With glazed eyes, she watched Candice Bartholomew bound out of the adjoining bunk. Her sharp-featured pixie's face was split by a grin.

"Morning." Candy's long, clever fingers ran through her thatch of red hair like scoops, causing it to bounce into further disarray. Candy was, Eden had always thought, all bounce. "It's a beautiful day," she announced, in a voice as cheerful as the rest of her. Watching her friend stretch in frilly baby-doll pajamas, Eden gave another noncommittal grunt. She swung her bare legs off the mattress and contemplated the accomplishment of putting her feet on the floor.

"I could grow to hate you." Eden's voice, still husky with sleep, carried the rounded tones of her finishing-school education. Eyes shut, she pushed her own tousled blond hair away from her face.

Grinning, Candy tossed open the cabin door so that she could breathe in the fresh morning air while she studied her friend. The strong summer sunlight shot through Eden's pale hair, making it look fragile where it lay against her forehead and cheeks. Her eyes remained shut. Her slender shoulders slumped, she let out an enormous yawn. Candy wisely said nothing, knowing Eden didn't share her enthusiasm for sunrise.

"It can't be morning," Eden grumbled. "I swear I only lay down five minutes ago." Resting her elbows on her knees, she dropped her face into her hands. Her complexion was creamy, with just a suggestion of rose on the crest of her cheekbones. Her nose was small, with a hint of an upward tilt at the tip. What might have been a coolly aristocratic face was gentled by a full, generous mouth.

Candy took in one last breath of air, then shut the door. "All you need is a shower and some coffee. The first week of camp's the toughest, remember?"

Eden opened wide, lake-blue eyes. "Easy for you to say. You're not the one who fell in the poison ivy."

"Still itching?"

"A little." Because her own foul mood was making her feel guilty, Eden managed a smile. Everything softened, eyes, mouth, voice. "In any case, this is the first time we're the campees instead of the campers." Letting out another fierce yawn, she rose and tugged on a robe. The air coming through the screens was fresh as a daisy, and chilly enough to make Eden's toes curl. She wished she could remember what she'd done with her slippers.

"Try under the bunk," Candy suggested.

Eden bent down and found them. They were embroidered pink silk, hardly practical, but it hadn't seemed worthwhile to invest in another pair. Putting them on gave her an excuse to sit down again. "Do you really think five consecutive summers at Camp Forden for Girls prepared us for this?"

Haunted by her own doubts, Candy clasped her hands together. "Eden, are you having second thoughts?"

Because she recognized distress in the bubbly voice, Eden buried her own doubts. She had both a financial and emotional interest in the newly formed Camp Liberty. Complaining wasn't going to put her on the road to success. With a shake of her head, she walked over to squeeze Candy's shoulder. "What I have is a terminal case of morning crankiness. Let me get that shower, then I'll be ready to face our twenty-seven tenants."

"Eden." Candy stopped her before she closed the bathroom door. "It's going to work, for both of us. I know it."

"I know it, too." Eden closed the bathroom door and leaned against it. She could admit it now, while she was alone. She was scared to death. Her last dime, and her last ray of hope, were tied up in the six cabins, the stables and the cafeteria that were Camp Liberty. What did Eden Carlbough, former Philadelphia socialite, know about managing a girls' summer camp? Just enough to terrify her.

If she failed now, with this, could she pick up the pieces and go on? Would there be any pieces left? Confidence was what was needed, she told herself as she turned the taps on. Once inside the narrow shower stall, she gave the tap optimistically marked HOT another twist. Water, lukewarm, dripped out halfheartedly. Confidence, Eden thought again as she shivered under the miserly spray. Plus some cold hard cash and a whole barrel of luck.

She found the soap and began to lather with the soft-scented French milled she still allowed herself to indulge in. A year ago she would never have considered something as lowly as soap an indulgence.

Eden turned so that the rapidly cooling water hit her back. A year ago she would have risen at eight, had a leisurely, steaming shower, then breakfasted on toast and coffee, perhaps some shirred eggs. Sometime before ten, she would have driven to the library for her volunteer morning. There would have been lunch with

Eric, perhaps at the Deux Cheminees before she gave her afternoon to the museum or one of Aunt Dottie's charities.

The biggest decision she might have made was whether to wear her rose silk suit or her ivory linen. Her evening might have been spent quietly at home, or at one of Philadelphia's elegant dinner parties.

No pressure. No problems. But then, Papa had been alive.

Eden sighed as she rinsed away the last of the lather. The light French scent clung to her even as she dried her skin with the serviceable camp-issue towel. When her father had been alive, she had thought that money was simply something to spend and that time was forever. She had been raised to plan a menu, but not to cook; to run a home, but not to clean it.

Throughout her childhood, she had been carelessly happy with her widowed father in the ageless elegance of their Philadelphia home. There had always been party dresses and cotillions, afternoon teas and riding lessons. The Carlbough name was an old and respected one. The Carlbough money had been a simple fact of life.

How quickly and finally things could change.

Now she was giving riding instructions and juggling columns in a ledger with the vain hope that one and one didn't always make two.

Because the tiny mirror over the tiny sink was dripping with condensation, Eden rubbed it with the towel. She took a miserly dab of the half pot of imported face cream she had left. She was going to make it last through the summer. If she lasted through the summer herself, another pot would be her reward.

Eden found the cabin empty when she opened the bathroom door. If she knew Candy, and after twenty years she certainly did, the redhead would be down with the girls already. How easily she became acclimatized, Eden thought; then she reminded herself it was time she did the same. She took her jeans and her red T-shirt with CAMP LIBERTY emblazoned on the chest, and began to dress. Even as a teenager, Eden had rarely dressed so casually.

She had enjoyed her social life—the parties, the well-chaperoned ski trips to Vermont, the trips to New York for shopping or the theater, the vacations in Europe. The prospect of earning a living had never been considered, by her, or her father. Carlbough women didn't work, they chaired committees.

College years had been spent with the idea of rounding out her education rather than focusing on a career. At twenty-three, Eden was forced to admit she was qualified to do absolutely nothing.

She could have blamed her father. But how could she blame a man who had been so indulgent and loving? She had adored him. She could blame herself for being naive and shortsighted, but she could never blame her father. Even now, a year after his sudden death, she still felt pangs of grief.

She could deal with that. The one thing she had been taught to do, the one thing she felt herself fully qualified to accomplish, was to cover emotion with poise, with control, or with disdain. She could go day after day, week after week through the summer, surrounded by the girls at camp and the counselors Candy had hired, and none of them would know she still mourned her father. Or that her pride had been shattered by Eric Keeton.

Eric, the promising young banker with her father's firm. Eric, always so charming, so attentive, so suitable. It had been during her last year of college that she had accepted his ring and made her promises to him. And he had made promises to her.

When she discovered the hurt was still there, Eden coated it, layer by layer, with anger. Facing the mirror, she tugged her hair back in a short ponytail, a style her hairdresser would have shuddered at.

It was more practical, Eden told her reflection. She was a practical woman now, and hair waving softly to the shoulders would just have got in the way during the riding lessons she was to give that morning.

For a moment, she pressed her fingers against her eyes. Why were the mornings always the worst? She would wake, expecting to come out of some bad dream and find herself at home again. But it wasn't her home any longer. There were strangers living in it now. Brian Carlbough's death had not been a bad dream, but a horrible, horrible reality.

A sudden heart attack had taken him overnight, leaving Eden stunned with shock and grief. Even before the grief could fade, Eden had been struck with another shock.

There had been lawyers, black-vested lawyers with long, technical monologues. They had had offices that had smelled of old leather and fresh polish. With solemn faces and politely folded hands, they had shattered her world.

Poor investments, she had been told, bad market trends, mortgages, second mortgages, short-term loans. The simple fact had been, once the details had been sifted through, there had been no money.

Brian Carlbough had been a gambler. At the time of his death, his luck had turned, and he hadn't had time to recoup his losses. His daughter had been forced to liquidate his assets in order to pay off the debts. The house she had grown up in and loved was gone. She had still been numbed by grief when she had found herself without a home or an income. Crashing down on top of that had been Eric's betrayal.

Eden yanked open the cabin door and was met by the balmy morning air of the mountains. The breathtaking view of greening hills and blue sky didn't affect her. She was back in Philadelphia, hearing Eric's calm, reasonable voice.

The scandal, she remembered and began marching toward the big cabin where mess would be served. His reputation. His career. Everything she had loved had been taken away, but he had only been concerned with how he might be affected.

He had never loved her. Eden jammed her hands into her pockets and kept walking. She'd been a fool not to see it from the beginning. But she'd learned, Eden reminded herself. How she'd learned. It had simply been a merger to Eric, the Carlbough name, the Carlbough money and reputation. When they had been destroyed, he had cut his losses.

Eden slowed her quick pace, realizing she was out of breath, not from exertion but from temper. It would never do to walk into breakfast with her face flushed and her eyes gleaming. Giving herself a moment, she took a few deep breaths and looked around her.

The air was still cool, but by midmorning the sun would be warm and strong. Summer had barely begun.

And it was beautiful. Lining the compound were a half-dozen small cabins with their window flaps open to the morning. The sound of girlish laughter floated through the windows. Along the pathway between cabins four and five was a scattering of anemones. A dogwood, with a few stubborn blooms clinging to it, stood nearby. Above cabin two, a mockingbird chattered.

Beyond the main camp to the west were rolling hills, deeply green. Grazing horses and trees dotted them. There was an openness here, a sense of space which Eden found incredible. Her life had always been focused on the city. Streets, buildings, traffic, people, those had been the familiar. There were times when she felt a quick pang of need for what had been. It was still possible for her to have all that. Aunt Dottie had offered her home and her love. No one would ever know how long and hard Eden had wrestled with the temptation to accept the invitation and let her life drift.

Perhaps gambling was in Eden's blood, too. Why else would she have sunk what ready cash she had had left into a fledgling camp for girls in the hills?

Because she had had to try, Eden reminded herself. She had had to take the risk on her own. She could never go back into the shell of the fragile porcelain doll she had been. Here, centered in such open space, she would take the time to learn about herself. What was inside Eden Carlbough? Maybe, just maybe, by expanding her horizons, she would find her place.

Candy was right. Eden took a long last breath. It was going to work. They were going to make it work.

"Hungry?" Her hair damp from whatever shower she'd popped into, Candy cut across Eden's path.

"Starved." Content, Eden swung a friendly arm around Candy's shoulder. "Where did you run off to?"

seriously, meh

Normally I enjoy Nora Roberts books, but this one was just disappointing, especially the first one. I absolutely hated the character of Roberta, I found her annoying instead of cute and spunky. But goodness, the male lead of this story! When Eden is forced to trespass onto his property (thanks to Roberta breaking the camp rules) he is a jerk to her, purposely provoking her and constantly invading her personal boundaries (after being told to, repeatedly)

Roberta continues to be a pain in the butt, deliberately flouting camp rules and thinking she can charm her way out of it. I know the author intended her to be an likable little imp, but I just found her to be a little brat. The romance itself progressed poorly, with Eden having to fight off more unwanted advances.

The second story in this duo was not much better. I know Nora Roberts uses cliches sometimes, but this was just too much.

Messed up
By AStavros
First let me start with, I love this book. Which Is why I decided to purchase it again after a friend borrowed it and spilt fruit punch all over the edges of the book.
Second:
I was not happy that when I received the new book that there version of "very good " condition was more "ok".
As in:
There were dog eared pages
The book was bent at the corner so it couldn't lay flat
Had light water damage
A bend on the putter cover

I expected a couple of small things as I was buy a used book, but it was too messed up to be considered "very good" condition.

one of her best!
By Susie Wayne
This is such a wonderful book! I fell in love with all the characters and their stories but especially "Dutch" and Dani's. Palmer's tried and tested formula of young virginal dowdy woman with handsome rich and bitter man wary of love works brillliantly here. Such a lovely story with great plot twists, secondary chracters and excellent writing. Won't go into too much detail, don't want to spoil it but have to say no one delivers a hearwarming story like palmer.

Soldiers of Fortune
By Cathy Schottle
I have read most of Diane Palmer books and i just love Soldiers of Fortune.I really wish she would write more books about those men and their families.i love every character in her book.I wish she would make a series out of Soldiers of Fortune. I do realize that the characters in those books would be different from the very first book,But it was like they were all family that made it so nice.Plus if she would continue I would buy them all.It would even nice if she would bring back some of the old characters in her other books that would really make it great to read. Anyway i really enjoy those books and i hope other readers will too,,,TY from Cathy ,,,Keep up the great work Mrs Palmer

5th IN THE TEXAS SERIES - SHERIFF CAULFIELD
By M. Hartmann
Wow! 5 books trailing in a series takes a lot of stamina.

TEXAS LAWMAN kind of brings most all of the characters to a closing. CD did not leave us wondering what happened to her family of characters.

I will admit that I have not found my copy of "A Marriage By Chance" #1? An introduction of J. Cleary.

When I started "The Texan" with the story of U.S. Marshall Jonathan Cleary and his love, Augusta - I didn't know what to expect. Was Great!

In "Tempting A Texan" Cleary sends Nicholas Garvey and his bride, & niece to Benning, Texas [about 50 miles away]where they find Faith Hudson of "Texas Gold" and of course then we meet Sheriff Brace Caulfield, who has a thing for Faith.

"Texas Lawman" gives more depth to the Caulfield character [1901] and the young woman he decides to marry.

Theirs turns out to be a tender love story where our lady, Sarah Murphy has no doubts about marrying the Sheriff.

The story involves her obtaining custody of her twin sister's son and she is willing to do anything to make that happen. Even shoot the boy's abusive father, Lester. Then his conniving brothers show up. They need Stephen to collect an inheritance and wouldn't mind taking Sarah along too.

Brace finds himself willing to help her and obtain a wife into the bargain. When Nicholas shows up in Benning it is about 1897 and Brace is well established so I wonder just how old he is. He considers himself [at first] too old for Sarah, I think she is about 20 or so.

There is a wonderful bonding between Brace and little Stephen that tugs at Sarah's heart.

It is not too action packed but has its moments [especially when Sarah is threatened with rape]. Nicholas and Brace and a group of men ride to the rescue.

CD has made up a group of wonderful characters in what I call her Benning series. They are well worth reading and keeping.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED - I gotta find the first book -

The Final Book of the Benning, Texas Series
By JJares
This is the fifth and final book of the Benning, Texas series. Readers get to see characters from previous books again in this wrap-up. This is a pleasant story about Sheriff Brace Caulfield and his love interest, Sarah Murphy.

They meet under strange circumstances; Sarah is watching for her former brother-in-law to emerge from a hotel so Sarah can shoot him. Sheriff Caulfield is less than delighted to find a woman getting ready to bloody up his town; he takes her into custody. Over the next few hours, he hears the whole story.

Sarah is convinced that Lester killed her twin sister and is now traveling with his son to parts unknown. Sarah will do anything to get abused Stephen from his father – even kill him. Obviously smitten with the brave Sarah, the sheriff manipulates the situation and helps Sarah get the child from his father. Now the sheriff puts Lester in jail and hides Sarah and Stephen in his home.

Knowing that hiding Sarah and Stephen is a short-term answer at best, he asks Sarah to marry him and they would keep Stephen as their child. Eventually, Sarah agrees when she realizes that Brace is sincere and would make a wonderful father. Brace immediately includes Stephen in everything and calls him ‘son.’

However Lester has a new plan – steal his son back and kidnap Sarah, taking them to his family’s home in far west Texas. When two of his brothers arrive, they decide to use Stephen to collect their inheritance. Oh and Sarah would be a nice plaything to have along.

Emotions, not gunshots are the most important items in this story. It is not filled with a lot of action; I felt the last 20 pages, or so (not including the epilogue) were unnecessary. They restated information already made abundantly clear in the rest of the book. This is a pleasant, feel-good story, resolving the issues of the folks of Benning, Texas. 3.5 stars

For old Times Sake
By marjorie harper
This book was originally published in 1986, and I'm so glad to see some of these book republished because they are gems. This book is about teenage lovers who go off to their separate lives and them reunite years later after a tragedy happens. This books deals with treaty issues, dissidence, and political issues involving Indian reservations and outside manipulation and of course a story about reunited lovers.

A tender heartwarming story!
By Love 2 Read Novels
Joe's Wife has been wonderfully reviewed already but let me say that I agree with them. This is one of the most endearing stories I've read. Tye is a true hero just by being himself and putting others first regardless of how they treated him. Meg is wonderful heroin because she is loyal and non-judgemental. What a great job Cheryl did with this story. I'd give it 10 stars if I could. It is a keeper for my shelf. I highly recommend it. And it is true...you will need some tissues.

A Great Plot, Well-Executed
By JJares
Meg Telford's husband, Joe, was killed during the Civil War. He left her left her 'land poor' -- plenty of land but no money. Meg is getting pressure to sell out and live with her mother-in-law (a domineering and controlling presence). But Meg believes in the dream she and Joe had and she is determined to control her destiny and her land. With foreclosure staring her in the face, Meg makes a list of the marriageable men in the area and is left with three choices.

The only one capable is of helping Meg retain her land is the local bad boy, who had\s returned from the Civil War with minor injuries. Unfortunately, Tye Hatcher is socially unacceptable; he's the illegitimate son of one of the town's whores. He's come back to town to prove that he is worthy of respect. Unfortunately, it is hard to earn that respect when no one will give him a job.

Meg is looking for a business proposition, nothing more. She and Tye negotiate a workable compromise. Tye warns Meg that she will not be accepted once she marries him. Not really believing Tye, Meg assures him that she can handle it.

The only thing he neglects to mention is that he has promised to take a whore's child to raise when she dies of consumption. She dies soon after Meg and Tye marry.

To explain why I dropped the rating calls for spoilers. Do not continue to read if you don't want to know too much about the plot. XXXSPOILERS XXX I had a hard time of believe that no one told Meg what Tye was doing in town for all of those weeks. I also found it hard to believe that Meg had no clue that Tye would be intimidated by Joe's omnipresence in their lives (even though he was dead). Granted, she was grappling with her own emotions about transferring her allegiance to her new husband. Still, I expected a bit more understanding by Meg.

Got egg on my face now
By SusieQ
I've read and enjoyed several of Cheryl St. John's historical romances, but must admit I never considered her a "keeper" before. Something was always just slightly "off" about the other stories (The Secondhand Wife, Tenderfoot Bride, Sweet Annie). I liked those characters, I liked their stories, but the essential emotional "memorability" that a really great romance has, just wasn't there for me.

Well, I just read JOE'S WIFE, and I have to admit it - finally, the story, the characters; their emotions and motivations, all came together. The arranged marriage between Meg and Tye sloooowwly becomes something very special for them. This is an excellent Western historical romance with a very simple plot and a very sympathetic hero and heroine. I highly recommend it. And what a fabulous movie this book would make.

#2 of the Kincaid family - mustangs and Rafe
By M. Hartmann
Someone has reported mustang killings on the Triple K Ranch - Rafe Kincaid's ranch.

Jessica Scott of the BLM, Bureau of Land Management, is informed by her boss that someone must go to Colorado to check out the killings reported on the Kincaid ranch.

It seems that the rooky sent there accused Rafe of killing the mustangs - so Rafe kicked him off the ranch. You will have a hard time figuring out who the culprit is.

Jessie was born and raised in Washington D.C. and had no concept of ranch management. She arrived on a wet day that cattle were being moved to the high pastures and in order not to hit Rafe on horseback she drove off the access road and into a tree.

Here is another divorcee with no sense of herself - so she has a hard time feeling any trust at first of Rafe.

Rafe is still grieving at the lose of his wife, Mary Ann and their child and feeling guilty that he wasn't there for her.

Jessie turns out to be another woman who ignores the reality of the dangers of ranch life and makes Rafe cart her across 60 some miles to the site of the killings. Of course this leads to their slowly unfolding romance [or at least the attraction].

She deserves her sore behind and scraped up knees. Never been on a horse before. [I don't see her as overcoming the impossible odds as just a foolish female.]

All in all it is a very good story. Rafe just dosen't know how to handle falling in love and is fearful of the pain of losing another loved one.

[chuckle] Jessie finally gets Rafe in the sack [with his co-operation] - she can't get pregnant. Yeah, right!

Ends exceedingly well. Oh yes, we learn that his sister, Cat is in a mine accident [one reason why he didn't call Jessie] which is a good lead in to the third book.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -- turning out to be an excellent trio.

Christmas in Whitehorn (Silhouette Montana Mavericks), by Susan Mallery

Detective Mark Kincaid was worn to the bone after his years on New York's tough city streets. Upon his return to Whitehorn, all he wanted was peace and quiet--not some sweet, adorable do-gooder messing up the sanctity of his brooding existence. His neighbor Darcy Montague was all sugar and spice, endearing herself with loaves of pumpkin bread and intimate dinners for two. Mark kept up his guard, knowing from experience that he could be hurt beyond repair. Was Darcy Montague too good to be true, or just the woman to make his heart come alive?

Living in Montana, waitress Darcy Montague doesn't give Detective Mark Kincaid the same response to his dark, scowling looks that he'd come to expect from the scum of New York. Despite the fact that she's his neighbor, Mark tries to avoid Darcy's cheer and maternal fussing. Then he surprises himself by accepting her Thanksgiving Day dinner invitation. When when all the other guests cancel, Mark finds them dining alone. Perhaps his mind wants to distance from others, but his body needs human contact. Spontaneous combustion does the rest.
Five years without a man's touch leaves Darcy likewise with a need to connect. Selfless devotion to her brother's well-being requires nonstop effort to meet his costly tuition, leaving her little time or energy for her own needs. Further, experience has taught Darcy to keep her brother a secret. Usually when men learn of the boy, realizing he will always be somewhat dependant on Darcy, they disappear. For once Darcy wants to treasure this delicate relationship without risking his disappearance. Unfortunately, her secrets leave the detective suspicious, reminding him of other deceptive secrets in the past.
Susan Mallery demonstrates her wonderful skill for creating dazzling characters in CHRISTMAS IN WHITEHORN. Dark and brooding Mark suffers from betrayal and disillusionment. Having stared in the dark side of human nature too long, Mark needs a heroine like Darcy, whose selfless giving and generosity of spirit sharply contrast with his gloomy disposition. A sparkling Christmas story that brings light and love to all the cold winter months, CHRISTMAS IN WHITEHORN comes highly recommended.

Christmas In Whitehorn by Susan Mallery
By Gloria
I did enjoy this story as I have most of the Montana Maverick books and as for the mystery about the fire, jewelry & gold, that will probably be solved in the next 2 books of the Christmas season, "In Love With Her Boss" by Christie Ridgeway & "Marked For Marriage" by Jackie Merritt.
In "Marked For Marriage Maddie Kincaid comes home to Whitehorn.
The problem I had with "Christmas In Whitehorn" was the fact that Mark, although didn't mention his parents first names he did say they had died several years ago and the only family he had left was his sister Maddie, who was on the rodeo circuit.
Now I don't understand how a person with the last name of Kincaid didn't have some kind of family in Whitehorn, MT. I've read all the past books and town had a lot of Kincaid relatives. If this hero wasn't going to have family in this town he should have had a different last name. His & his sister's name isn't even in the family tree that is in some of the books.
I was disappointed that no other Kincaids were mentioned. But the owner of the Hip Hop Café Melissa Avery North & her husband Wyatt North was mentioned.

mmm...not so much.
By Julie A. Pope
I love Susan Mallery, but I really struggled with this story. I really didn't like the cheap meaningless sex at the beginning of the story. It made Darcy seem foolish without much self- respect. Even after she realized the stupidity of sleeping with someone she barely knew with no commitment whatsoever, she would slip into the same mistake over and over again. It made her seem cheap and easy and not a heroine I could respect or identify with.

Also, there is some sort of money laundering mystery on the side that never really develops and seems out of place. The story ends and that mystery is left unresolved.

This is by far not susan's best work, but she is still one of my favorite authors!

The house was big and cool and white. In the early-morning hours, a breeze came through the terrace doors Chantel had left unlatched, bringing in the scents of the garden. Across the lawn, hidden from the main house by trees, was a gazebo, painted white, with wisteria climbing up the trellises. Sometimes, when the wind was right, Chantel could catch the perfume from her bedroom window.

On the east side of the lawn was an elaborate marble fountain. It was quiet now. She rarely had it turned on when she was alone. Near it was the pool, an octagonal stone affair skirted by a wide patio and flanked by another, smaller, white house. There was a tennis court beyond a grove of trees, but it had been weeks since she'd had the time or the inclination to pick up a racket.

Surrounding the estate was a stone fence, twice as tall as a man, that alternately gave her a sense of security or the feeling of being hemmed in. Still, inside the house, with its lofty ceilings and cool white walls, she often forgot about the fence and the security system and the electronic gate; it was the price she paid for the fame she had always wanted.

The servants' quarters were in the west wing, on the first floor. No one stirred there now. It was barely dawn, and she was alone. There were times Chantel preferred it that way.

As she bundled her hair under a hat, she didn't bother to check the results in the three-foot mirror in her dressing room. The long shirt and flat-heeled shoes she wore were chosen for comfort, not for elegance. The face that had broken men's hearts and stirred women's envy was left untouched by cosmetics. Chantel protected it by pulling down the brim of her hat and slipping on enormous sunglasses. As she picked up the bag that held everything she thought she would need for the day, the intercom beside the door buzzed.

She checked her watch. Five forty-five. Then she pushed the button. "Right on time."

"Good morning, Miss O'Hurley."

"Good morning, Robert. I'll be right down." After flipping the switch that released the front gate, Chantel started down the wide double staircase that led to the main floor. The mahogany rail felt like satin under her fingers as she trailed them down. Overhead, a chandelier hung, its prisms quiet in the dim light. The marble floor shone like glass. The house was a suitable showcase for the star she had worked to become. Chantel had yet to take any of it for granted. It was a dream that had rolled from, then into, other dreams, and it took time and effort and skill to maintain. But then she'd been working all her life and felt entitled to the benefits she had begun to reap.

As she walked to the front door, the phone began to ring.

Damn it, had they changed the call on her? Because she was up and the servants weren't, Chantel crossed the hall to the library and lifted the receiver. "Hello." Automatically she picked up a pen and prepared to make a note.

"I wish I could see you right now." The familiar whisper had her palms going damp, and the pen slipped out of her hand and fell soundlessly on the fresh blotter. "Why did you change your number? You're not afraid of me, are you? You mustn't be afraid of me, Chantel. I won't hurt you. I just want to touch you. Just touch you. Are you getting dressed? Are you—"

With a cry of despair, Chantel slammed down the receiver. The sound of her breathing in the big, empty house seemed to echo back to her. It was starting again.

Minutes later, her driver noticed only that she didn't give him the easy, flirtatious smile she usually greeted him with before she climbed into the back of the limo. Once inside, Chantel tipped her head back, closed her eyes and willed herself to calm. She had to face the camera in a few hours and give it her best. That was her job. That was her life. Nothing could be allowed to interfere with that, not even the fear of a whisper over the phone or an anonymous letter.

By the time the limo passed through the studio gates, Chantel had herself under control again. She should be safe here, shouldn't she? Here she could pour herself into the work that still fascinated her. Inside the dozens of big domed buildings, magic happened, and she was part of it. Even the ugliness was just pretend. Murder, mayhem and passion could all be simulated. Fantasyland, her sister Maddy called it, and that was true enough. But, Chantel thought with a smile, you had to work your tail off to make the fantasy real.

She was sitting in makeup at six-thirty and having her hair fussed over and styled by seven. They were in the first week of shooting, and everything seemed fresh and new. Chantel read over her lines while the stylist arranged her hair into the flowing silver-blond mane her character would wear that day.

"Such incredible bulk," the stylist murmured as she aimed the hand-held dryer. "I know women who would sell their blue-chip stocks for hair as thick as this. And the color!" She bent down to eye level to look in the mirror at the results of her work. "Even I have a hard time believing it's natural."

"My grandmother on my father's side." Chantel turned her head a bit to check her left profile. "I'm supposed to be twenty in this scene, Margo. Am I going to pull it off?"

With a laugh, the stringy redhead stood back. "That's the least of your worries. It's a shame they're going to dump rain all over this." She gave Chantel's hair a final fluff.

"You're telling me." Chantel stood when the bib was removed. "Thanks, Margo." Before she'd taken two steps, her assistant was at her elbow. Chantel had hired him because he was young and eager and had no ambitions to be an actor. "Are you going to crack the whip, Larry?"

Larry Washington flushed and stuttered, as he always did during his first five minutes around Chantel. He was short and well built, fresh out of college, and had a mind that soaked up details. His biggest ambition at the moment was to own a Mercedes. "Oh, you know I'd never do that, Miss O'Hurley."

Chantel patted his shoulder, making his blood pressure soar. "Somebody has to. Larry, I'd appreciate it if you'd scout up the assistant director and tell him I'm in my trailer. I'm going to hide out there until they're ready to rehearse." Her co-star came into view carrying a cigarette and what Chantel accurately gauged to be a filthy hangover.

"Would you like me to bring you some coffee, Miss O'Hurley?" As he asked, Larry shifted to distance himself. Everyone with brains had quickly figured out that it was best to avoid Sean Carter when he was dealing with the morning after.

"Yes, thanks." Chantel nodded to a few members of the crew as they tightened up the works on the first set, a train station, complete with tracks, passenger cars and a depot. She'd say her desperate goodbyes to her lover there. She could only hope he'd gotten his headache under control by then.

Larry kept pace with her as she crossed the set, walking under lights and around cables. "I wanted to remind you about your interview this afternoon. The reporter from Star Gaze is due here at twelve-thirty. Dean from publicity said he'd sit in with you if you wanted."

"No, that's all right. I can handle a reporter. See if you can get some fresh fruit, sandwiches, coffee. No, make that iced tea. I'll do the interview in my dressing room."

"All right, Miss O'Hurley." Earnestly he began to note it down in his book. "Is there anything else?"

She paused at the door of her dressing room. "How long have you been working for me now, Larry? "

"Ah, just over three months, Miss O'Hurley."

"I think you could start to call me Chantel." She smiled, then closed the door on his astonished pleasure.

The trailer had been recently redecorated for her taste and comfort. With the script still in her hand, Chantel walked through the sitting room and into the small dressing area beyond. Knowing her time was limited, she didn't waste it. After stripping out of her own clothes, she changed into the jeans and sweater she would wear for the first scene.

She was to be twenty, a struggling art student on the down slide of her first affair. Chantel glanced at the script again. It was good, solid. The part she'd gotten would give her an opportunity to express a range of feeling that would stretch her creative talents. It was a challenge, and all she had to do was take advantage of it. And she would. Chantel promised herself she would.

When she had read Strangers she'd cast herself in the part of Hailey, the young artist betrayed by one man, haunted by another; a woman who ultimately finds success and loses love. Chantel understood Hailey. She understood betrayal. And, she thought as she glanced around the elegant little room again, she understood success and the price that had to be paid for it.

Though she knew her lines cold, she kept the script with her as she went back to the sitting room. With luck she would have time for one quick cup of coffee before they ran through the scene. When she was working on a film, Chantel found it easy to live off coffee, a quick, light lunch and more coffee. The part fed her. There was rarely time for shopping, a dip in the pool or a massage at the club until a film was wrapped. Those were rewards for a job well done.

She started to sit, but a vase of vivid red roses caught her eye. From one of the studio heads, she thought as she walked over to pick up the card. When she opened it, the script slid out of her hand and onto the floor. "I'm watching you always. Always."

At the knock on her door, she jerked back, stumbling against the counter. The scent of the roses at her back spread, heady and sweet. With a hand to her throat, she stared at the door with the first real fear she'd ever experienced.

"Miss O'Hurley…Chantel, it's Larry. I have your coffee."

With a breathless sob, she ran across the room and jerked open the door. "Larry—"

"It's black the way you—What's wrong?"

"I—I just—" She cut herself off. Control, she thought desperately. You lose everything if you lose control. "Larry, do you know anything about these flowers?" She gestured back, but couldn't look at them.

"The roses. Oh, one of the caterers found them while she was setting up breakfast. Since they had your name on them, I went ahead and put them in here. I know how much you like roses."

"Get rid of them."

"But—"

"Please." She stepped out of the dressing room. People. She wanted lots of people around her. "Just get rid of them, Larry."

"Sure." He stared at her back as she walked toward the set. "Right away."

Four aspirin and three cups of coffee had brought Sean Carter back to life. It was time to work, and nothing could be allowed to interfere with that—not a hangover, not a few frightening words printed on a card. Chantel had worked hard to project an image of glamour and style. She'd worked just as hard not to develop a reputation as a temperamental actress. She was ready when called and always knew her lines. If a scene took ten hours to shoot, then it took ten hours. She reminded herself of all of this as she approached Sean and their director.

"How come you always look as though you stepped out of the pages of a fashion magazine?" Sean grumbled, but Chantel observed that makeup had dealt with the shadows under his eyes. His skin was tanned and shaved smooth. His thick, mahogany-colored hair was styled casually, falling across his brow. He looked young, healthy and handsome, the dream lover for an idealistic girl.

Chantel lifted a hand and let it rest on his cheek. "Because, darling, I did."

"What a woman." Because the aspirin had made him

feel human again, Sean grabbed Chantel and leaned her back in a dramatic dip. "Let me ask you this, Rothschild," he said, calling to the director while his lips hovered inches from Chantel's. "How could a man in his right mind leave a woman like this?"

"It hasn't been established that you—or Brad," Mary Rothschild corrected, referring to the role, "is in his right mind."

"And you're such a cad," Chantel reminded Sean.

Pleased to remember it, Sean brought her up again. "I haven't played a real cad in about five years. I don't think I've properly thanked the writer yet."

"You can do it later today," Rothschild told him. "He's over there."

Chantel glanced over to the tall, rangy man who stood, chain-smoking nervously, on the edge of the set. She'd met him a handful of times in meetings and during pre-production. As she recalled, he had said little that hadn't dealt directly with his book or his characters. She sent him a vaguely friendly smile before turning back to the director.

As Rothschild outlined the scene, she pushed everything else out of her mind. All that would be left was the heartbreak and hope her character felt as her lover slipped away. Mechanically, their minds on angles and continuity, she and Sean went over their brief but poignant love scene.

"I think I should touch your face like this." Chantel reached up to rest her palm on his cheek and looked pleadingly into his eyes.

"Then I'll take your wrist." Sean wrapped his fingers around it, then turned her palm to his lips.

Wonderful Nora Does it again
By apoem
Enjoyable. Both stories are strong and can stand on their own without the previous two stories published in "Born O'Hurley". However, these two stories are even more fun when you have read the previous two stories.

The characters are fun and believable and slightly off beat. The first story is about a movie star who has made it big and yet still finds true love. The second story is about her brother. I particularly liked the second story because it is not often you find a lovely romance written with a man as the main character.

Well worth every penny. A true Nora Roberts book.

Enjoy.

Oldie but goodie
By Cherise Everhard
This book contains the last 2 stories of the wonderful O'Hurley siblings.

In Skin Deep you have the story of Chantal the oldest triplet. She is the beautiful Hollywood actress who finds herself being stalked and harrassed by an unknown over eager fan. She reluctantly hires Quinn Doran to protect her and help find out who is messing with her. Quinn soon discovers her beauty is more than just Skin Deep.

In without a Trace we finally find out what older brother Trace O'Hurley has been up to all these years. Dr. Gillian Fitzpatrick offfers him $100,000 to help her find her brother and neice who have been kidnapped for their scientific knowledge of a project called Horizon. Gillian and Trace have an adventure ahead of them. Finally there is an O'Hurley reunion at the end.

This is a good early Nora Roberts book. I think you will enjoy it.

Even more fun than "Born O'Hurley"!
By Valerie Matteson
I enjoyed "Born O'Hurley" very much and if you haven't read it you should!! "O'Hurley's Return" is even more fun as it adds more adventure, intrigue and excitement. Chantel's story in "Skin Deep" is one that has been mimicked in real-life and we can relate to her frustration and fears. The romance and character development are well done by Ms. Roberts as she makes Quinn a hero but with flaws to humanize him. In the second story, "Without a Trace", we have some action and adventure and intrigue with a gutsy heroine in Gillian and a very reluctant hero in Trace. Lots of fun to read and enjoy. I've read it twice already!!
