About the Author
A mother of two young boys, Naomi Rawlings spends her days picking up, cleaning, playing, and writing historical novels that matter for today. Her husband pastors a small church in Michigan's rugged Upper Peninsula, where her family shares its ten wooded acres with black bears, wolves, coyotes, deer and bald eagles. Naomi and her family live only three miles from Lake Superior, where the scenery is beautiful and they average 200 inches of snow per winter.

Near Abbeville, France, July 1795

The children. She was doing this for the children.

Brigitte Dubois surveyed the countryside. The brilliant blue sky where two birds twittered and flirted with each other, the lush green forest to her right filled with a host of insect sounds, and the rolling fields stretching beyond the farmstead ahead and into the golden horizon.

Serene. Peaceful. A pleasant change from the grimy streets of Calais.

She must have the wrong house.

She'd never before given much thought to the soldier who had dragged her husband away in the night to execute him for his crimes. Had never wondered where he lived, what he did, if he had a family. But farming?

She forced her feet up the curving lane, climbing the little knoll to the cottage. A man stood near the stable, stuffing vegetables into an old wagon.

Her husband's alleged killer?

Surely killers didn't farm the pristine countryside or load vegetable wagons on sunny afternoons. They skulked about in the dead of night, meting out death and destruction.

"Bonjour, Citizen." She neared the stable where the vegetables waited, stacked neatly in crates and sacks.

The man's forearms bulged as he hefted another crate, his shirt straining against wide shoulders and a torso thick as a tree trunk. He would tower over Alphonse's guards, and he was so thick of chest her hands wouldn't touch if she wrapped her arms around him.

Powerful enough to drag a man like Henri from his bed. Strong enough to beat her dead if he learned what she was about.

"If you're wishing to buy food, I sell it at the market, not here." The man didn't stop his work but reached for another sack.

"I'm not in want of food, but a post." Not that she wanted to work for a possible murderer, but truly, Alphonse had left her little choice.

He turned to her and paused, his hands gripping a crate filled with turnips. Harshness radiated from his being, with eyes so dark and ominous they were nearly black, and hair the color of the sky at midnight. His chin jutted hard and strong beneath a chiseled face, and an angry scar curled and bunched around his right eyebrow.

She wet her suddenly parched lips.

"I haven't a job to offer you. I only employ tenant farmers, and I've three men waiting for plots next year already." He slid the crate onto the wagon bed, then turned and hefted another. "Have you tried in town? The butcher might be hiring, and we can always use another laundress or seamstress."

Brigitte glanced down at her lye-scarred hands, unlikely to recover after sixteen months of taking in laundry and mending. Besides, Abbeville was a small town, not like the bustling port of Calais. The people here probably had a favorite widow they took their mending to. "What about working as laundress here? You said you have tenants."

"Aye, and several of them have wives. There're women aplenty for doing women's work and older men to laze about. It's young men we've naught of."

Yes, she knew. Perhaps the war with the Netherlands had been settled, but France still warred with the Austrians in the east, the Italians in the south, and the English on the sea. Which meant the country sorely lacked young men…

Or rather, young, upstanding men. Her husband and the rest of Alphonse's smugglers had evaded enlistment.

As had the man before her.

That bore looking into. Why would a strong, healthy man be farming rather than serving his country?

Perhaps he'd gotten leave for some reason, or had already joined the army only to be injured and sent home.

But that still didn't explain how he had all his tenant positions filled and a waiting list of three farmers for next year.

And wondering these things would do little good unless she procured employment here and could seek answers. She forced her eyes back to the big brute of a man still loading the wagon. "What of you? Have you a wife to do your laundry and housework and cooking? I can bake bread and apple pies, cherry tarts and-"

"Non." The harsh word resonated through the air between them. "I've no wife, and no need of one."

Heat flooded her cheeks and she took a step back, even though the wagon already sat between them. "I wasn't asking for your hand, I was offering to hire my labor out."

She'd already tried to dig into his secrets from afar. She'd moved to Abbeville half a week ago, but talking to the townsfolk had gotten her nowhere. She had a meeting with Alphonse's man in three days' time, and nothing to report but the information Alphonse had already given her: officially, after Jean Paul Belanger's wife had died seven years ago, he'd gone to Paris and spent six years away from Abbeville, supposedly making furniture.

Furniture. In the middle of a revolution.

Did no one else think that odd?

Alphonse did. And Alphonse also thought Citizen Belanger the lead soldier that had found Henri and broken up a smuggling endeavor over a year ago, while going by a different surname. Now she was here to find proof and present it to Alphonse's man.

"Where did you say you were from?" The large man shoved another sack of grain onto the wagon and turned, his eyes studying her.

"Calais."

He frowned. "The port on the sea?"

"Oui. Have you been there? You can see England and its white cliffs from the shore. It's a beautiful city." Or it was if you lived in the proud stone houses set back from the sea and not in a shack near the harbor.

The man's eyes grew darker-which shouldn't have been possible, as they had started out the color of midnight.

He knew what she was about, he had to. She took an instinctive step back. If he flew at her-

"I've been there once, and it doesn't bear remembering."

Her breath puffed from her lips in shaky little bursts. It was as she'd told Alphonse, she'd be no good at this information gathering. If she couldn't look the man in the eye and ask him a simple question without giving herself away, how would she uncover his secrets?

If he had any secrets.

If he wasn't the wrong man entirely.

On the eve of Henri's capture, the sliver of moonlight trickling through the window had been so dim she could hardly make out her husband's form on the pallet beside her. But she'd felt his presence, the heat from his body, the tickle of his breath on her cheek. He was home, for once, not off on some smuggling errand for Alphonse, paying some strange woman for a place in her bed, or drinking himself through the wee hours until dawn. He'd eaten dinner with her and the children, kissed them and crawled into bed beside her as though they were a normal family.

Then the soldiers came. They didn't knock, just burst through the solid wooden door and shouted for Henri Dubois. One man yanked him from their bed. A big man, so broad of back and thick of chest his body eclipsed any light from the window.

Strange that she should recall that of all things, the way the soldier's body had been so large it obstructed the shadow of her husband's form being dragged to the door.

"Are you unwell?" Citizen Belanger watched her, his forehead wrinkling into deep furrows.

She shook her head, her throat too dry to speak.

"Citizen?" The farmer approached, stepping around the wagon and striding forward with a powerful gait.

"Non, I'm fine." She didn't want the hulking man beside her, innocent or not.

But he came, anyway, closer and closer until she stood in his shadow, those wide shoulders blocking the sun just as the soldier's body had blocked the light from the moon.

She pressed her eyes shut and ducked her head. What if this man had taken her husband? Would he drag her away to the guillotine, as well?

Her breaths grew quick and short, and the air squeezed from her lungs.

But nothing happened. She waited one moment, then two, before peeking an eyelid open. He stood beside her now, towering and strong, able to do anything he wished with those powerful hands and arms.

But concern cloaked his face rather than malice. "Are you ill? Need you sustenance?"

Sustenance? She wanted nothing from him-besides information, that was. She opened her mouth to proclaim herself well, except he stood so close she could only stare at his big, burly body.

"Here. Sit." He took her by the shoulder.

She lurched back, but his hands held her firm, leading her toward the house. Surely he didn't mean to take her inside, where 'twould be far more difficult for her to get away.

"Non." She planted her feet into the dirt. "I-I wish to stay in the sun."

He scowled, a look that had likely struck fear in many a heart. "Are you certain? Mayhap the sun's making you over warm. The house is cooler."

Her current state had nothing to do with the heat, but rather the opposite. Fear gripped her stomach and chest, an iciness that radiated from within and refused to release its hold. She'd felt it twice before. First when those soldiers had barged into their house and taken Henri away, and then the night Alphonse had given her this task.

Now she was in Abbeville, staring at the man she might well need to destroy and letting fear cripple her once again.

She's like Corinne. It was the only thing Jean Paul could think as he stared at the thin woman in his hold. She was tall yet slender, as his late wife had been, and had a quietly determined way about her. Unfortunately she also looked ready to faint.

He needed to get some food in her. He'd not have another woman starve in his hands, at least not when he had the means to prevent it.

"I should sit," she spoke quietly then slid from his grip, wilting against the stone and mud of the cottage wall before he could stop her.

"Are you unwell?" he asked again. A daft question, to be sure, with the way her face shone pale as stone.

She shook her head, a barely perceptible movement. "I simply…need a moment."

She needed more than a moment. Judging by the dark smudges beneath her eyes and hollowness in her face she needed a night of rest and a fortnight of sumptuous feasts.

"Come inside and lie down." He hunkered down and reached for her, wrapping one arm around her back and slipping another beneath her legs.

"Non!" The bloodcurdling scream rang across the fields, so loud his tenants likely heard it. "Remove your hands at once."

Stubborn woman. "If you'd simply let me…"

His voice trailed off as he met her eyes. They should have been clouded with pain, or mayhap in a temporary daze from nearly swooning. But fear raced through those deep brown orbs.

She was terrified.

Of him.

Why? He shifted back, giving her space enough to run if she so desired. The woman's chest heaved and her eyes turned wild, the stark anguish of fright and horror etched across her features.

"Let me get you a bit of water and bread." He rose and moved into the quiet sanctuary of his home. The cool air inside the dank daub walls wrapped around him, the familiar scents of rising bread and cold soup tugging him farther inside. But the surroundings didn't banish the woman's look of terror from his mind, nor the sound of her scream.

How many times had he heard screams like that? A woman's panic-filled cry, a child's voice saturated with fear?

And how many times had he been the cause?

Another excellent LIH from Rawlings
By Amber Perry
Holy smokes!! This story was excellent. Naomi is a truly gifted writer and she really knows how to hook you into every scene. There's a lot of excellent action, great history--and seriously, there's a kiss in this book that is--well, it's perfect.

Bridgett Dubois, the heroine, is very wonderful. Tough, sweet, generous, thoughtful--I really liked her. She is a widow with several children and works hard to make sure they are safe--which isn't an easy task. Her father-in-law is blackmailing her--and what he's forcing her to do could ruin everything. (Don't want to give too much away here, ladies, but it's pretty exciting!!)

Jean Paul (our beloved hero--really, REALLY fabulous) is haunted by his actions during the French Revolution--even though he had acted in the name of liberty. When he meets Bridgett, he finds that perhaps he can open his heart once again, but he fears what she will think of him when she discovers the truth of what he's done.

The emotions that were woven into these characters were very real and at times, extremely touching. One of things that I found especially interesting was the history. The extent of my knowledge about the French Revolution comes from The Scarlett Pimpernel and Les Mis. Not super great. So, this really opened my eyes on some things I had no idea about.

You can't wait to read it, can you?? *teehee* I knew it. ;)

For Lovers of French Revolution History
By Ruth Axtell
The Soldier’s Secrets by Naomi Rawlings was a compelling read, set in an era reminiscent of Dickens’ A Tale of Two Cities. I love French history and novels set anytime in the late 18th or throughout the 19th century.
Rawlings’ novel is set in 1895 northern France, close to the port city of Calais. She does a superb job of describing the countryside, farming life, the aftermath of the Reign of Terror under Robespierre during the French Revolution, and the climate during that era just before Napoleon rose to power. It’s clear she’s done a lot of historical research about the period, including the smuggling that was so prevalent in Calais during the time of war between England and France.
It seems The Soldier’s Secrets is a sequel to her earlier book, Sanctuary for a Lady, but I didn’t feel any sense of confusion reading this one without having read the first. It does make me want to read the first in this series.
I also enjoyed the two main characters in this romance: Brigitte Dubois, a widowed mother of five children (that’s right, five!) and the widower farmer, Jean Paul Belanger. At first glance, a mother of five is not a romantic prospect, but Rawlings has a deft way of making one care about her and her children, especially the three youngest who are in tow throughout the story. Even when they misbehave, they are endearing. I know from experience how realistic her depiction is of children of that age (three, seven and thirteen, I believe). They penetrate Jean Paul’s tough exterior and help this childless widower yearn for a home and family.
I recommend The Soldier’s Secrets. It packs a lot of punch for a shorter, Love Inspired novel—more than many a longer historical romance. I was given a copy of this book by the author, but was under no obligation to read or review it.

Great Read
By Glenn Haggerty
The Soldier’s Secrets chronicles two casualties of The French Revolution. Brigitte Dubois, widow of a smuggler is forced by her mobster father-in-law to spy on Jean Paul Belanger. Alphonse Dubois suspects Jean Paul is the soldier who captured and executed his son and he wants revenge. But more importantly, Alphonse wants to entangle Brigitte and her children—his grandchildren into his criminal enterprise. Believing she must comply to save her children, Brigitte assumes her maiden name and after seeking employment, slowly wheedles her way into Jean Paul’s life. However, the more she uncovers, the more she doubts he murdered her husband, and the more she falls in love. Brigitte's beauty, poise and compassion melt Jean Paul’s resistance, but he too has secrets . . . And Alphonse will not let the matter rest. Soon Brigitte must choose between her family’s safety and her mission to entrap Jean Paul.
With fascinating characters, remarkable detail to setting and a driving plot, The Soldier’s Secrets will keep the pages turning. The mitigating circumstances surrounding the hero and heroine’s poor choices help the readers identify with their plights, and the themes of reaping what you sow, taking responsibility, and accepting forgiveness bring an encouraging spiritual component. The Soldier’s Secrets is an exciting, romantic, and intriguing tale that will yet again show another facet of God's amazing and transforming grace.

Tess Collins stood at the front of the classroom, looking out at her new group of fourth graders. More than halfway through their second week of school, things were beginning to settle down. These were her students for the next nine months. For better or worse, she thought wryly.

"Good morning, everyone," she greeted her children with a smile. "Please take your seats."

The twenty-two fourth graders radiated energy but obligingly wiggled into their assigned seats. She checked to make sure none of them were absent, before she turned back to her desk. One glance at her seating chart confirmed that a few of the little rascals had switched spots.

"Ellen and Tanya, please return to your proper seats. Hunter and Brett, I also need you to go back to your assigned seats."

The four kids gaped in surprise but giggled and shuffled around until they were seated at their correct desks. She decided not to make a big deal out of their prank, at least for now. If they continued to misbehave, she'd have to make them stay after school to have a little chat.

"Today we're going to start with a math quiz that should be a review from what you learned last year."

She ignored the low moans of protest. "Miles, will you please help me hand out the papers?"

Miles, a short redheaded boy with lots of freckles, jumped up and took half of the stack of quizzes from her hands. She handed out the papers on one side, looking over the rest of the class as he passed a quiz to each student on the other side.

"Olivia, please put your book away. Only pencils and erasers are allowed." Tess waited until the young girl put her paperback away before glancing up at the clock. "Everyone ready? You may begin."

Instantly, all the students turned their attention to her impromptu math quiz. Satisfied they were all working diligently, Tess took a seat behind her desk to check out her lesson plan for the rest of the day.

Click.

Tess froze, the tiny hairs on the back of her neck lifting in alarm when she realized her knee had bumped into something hard. Battling a wave of trepidation, she bent sideways to see her knee was pressed up against a small box with lots of wires sticking out from it. The box was somehow attached to the inner side of her desk and there was a tiny red digital display with numbers counting down.

A bomb?

For a moment she simply stared in horror, barely believing what she was seeing. Afraid to move, fearing that releasing the trigger might cause an immediate blast, she glanced out at her students, who were all concentrating intensely on the pop quiz. Watching all those innocent faces, she grimly realized there wasn't a moment to waste.

"All right, class, we have a change in plans. Turns out we're going to have a fire drill. I need everyone to line up with their buddy and walk down the hall toward the principal's office just like we did the first day of school. I want you to go all the way outside. Now!"

The kids looked around in confusion but were more than happy to abandon their math quizzes. She quietly urged her students to hurry, unable to bear the thought of anything happening to them.

"Miss Collins, aren't you going to come, too?"

Trust Miles to be concerned about her. He was the sweetest child and she was often struck by the resemblance to her brother, Bobby. Although Bobby was a sullen seventeen-year-old now, a far cry from the loving younger brother he used to be.

"Not right now. But, Miles, I want you to tell the principal to come and see me, okay? Now go outside, but walk, don't run."

Tess held her breath waiting for the students to follow her instructions, walking out of the classroom and then down the hall. She closed her eyes in relief when the last pupil was out of harm's way.

Thank You, Lord.

"Tess?" Evelyn Fischer, the elementary school principal, came into the classroom, a concerned frown furrowed on her brow. "What's going on?"

She swallowed hard and tried to remain calm. "Listen, you need to get every student and teacher out of the building, immediately. Tell them it's a fire drill. And then I need you to call 911, because I'm afraid I've triggered a bomb…and if this timer is correct, we only have thirty minutes until it blows."

Declan Shaw set aside his M4 .223 and pulled his ear protectors off with a disgusted sigh. "I'm still only hitting the bull's-eye at sixty-five percent."

"Hey, you're getting better," his buddy Isaac Morrison pointed out. "The rest of your shots are in the next closest rim. That's not half-bad."

"Yeah, I think you're improving, Deck," Caleb O'Malley added. "Stop being so rough on yourself."

"We're down a sharpshooter," Declan pointed out. "Which means I need to step up my game."

"Your game is fine," Caleb assured him.

Their phones rang simultaneously, and Declan reached for his, knowing this couldn't be good news. "What's up?"

"Bomb threat at Greenland Elementary School," their new boss, Griff Vaughn, said. "Get ready to roll."

Declan didn't hesitate but ended the call and shouldered the M4 before leading the way through the training facility to the front of the building housing the sheriff's department. Isaac and Caleb were close on his heels.

"Probably a false alarm," Isaac muttered as they quickly donned their protective vests and the rest of their SWAT gear. "Some student pulling a prank to get out of school."

"Doubtful," Declan said grimly as he headed out to the armored truck. "Have you forgotten how we've had two other very real bombs within the past month, including one at the minimart that injured my sister? I don't think it's a bogus call at all."

"Most likely the same perp who seems to be targeting areas where students hang out—the custard stand, the minimart and now the elementary school. We need to catch this guy, and quick," Caleb added as he automatically slid into the driver's seat.

Declan knew that he'd be the lead point person during this tactical situation. He might not rock at being the top sharpshooter on the team, but he was the best when it came to disarming bombs.

Provided they could get there in time.

Declan tucked in his earpiece and flipped the switch on his radio. "Give me the intel," he ordered.

"We have a box with a trigger and a timer fixed underneath the fourth grade teacher's desk. She heard a click when she sat down and was smart enough to send the kids outside right away."

His gut clenched as he realized there was a possible victim close to the device. His sister, Karen, was lucky to only have suffered bruises and a broken arm, when she could easily have died from the force of the blast, just like his teammate. Once again, he couldn't help wishing he'd been the one called to the scene at the minimart. He wanted to believe his being there might have made a difference.

"Have you swept the school to make sure everyone is out and there are no other explosive devices?"

"Affirmative. The teacher managed to get almost everyone evacuated before we arrived. We're going through the rest of the building now, but so far it looks as if there's only the one device. We won't be able to use the robot on this one."

"Keep searching the rest of the building, until it's clear. We'll be there in five," Declan assured him.

"So it's the real deal, huh?" Isaac asked.

"Sounds like it. And there's an innocent victim involved, too. So step on it, Caleb."

"Like he isn't already going pedal to the metal with lights and sirens?" Isaac muttered. "Cool your jets, man."

Declan bit back a sarcastic reply, knowing his buddy was right. He needed to get his mind in the zone if he was going to be successful at disarming the explosive device in that classroom.

He went through his pack, double-checking to make sure he had all the equipment he'd need. Two weeks ago, he'd successfully dismantled the bomb that was found behind the counter at the custard stand. He wanted to believe he'd be able to take care of this latest bomb, too. So far they'd been fortunate that they hadn't suffered more casualties. Although losing three people after the minimart blast, one cop and two civilians, was three too many.

Declan took a deep breath and let it out slowly. When they arrived, the area around the school was vacant. The first cops on the scene had done a good job of getting all the students and faculty as far away from the building as possible. Caleb pulled up to the front door and Declan was the first with boots on the ground, his pack slung over his shoulder.

"I'm going in," he told them. "Isaac, you and Caleb stay here but keep the lines of communication open. I may need some assistance."

"Roger that," Caleb said. "We'll be ready."

Declan gave a brief nod before following the cop back into the school. The hallways were lined with coat hooks that were hung at what seemed like dwarf level. Even though he'd gone to school here, the place didn't look at all familiar now that he was seeing the building through adult eyes. Then again, he hadn't set foot inside a school since barely managing to graduate from Greenland High ten years ago.

He'd signed up to join the marines and left town a couple of weeks later, without looking back. After completing his six-year commitment, including two tours in Afghanistan, he'd returned home to join the Milwaukee County SWAT team to help support his older sister, Karen, and her young twin daughters.

"Third door on the right," the cop said, hanging back in a way that made it clear the guy didn't want to go much farther.

"Thanks." Declan nodded at him, then headed toward the classroom.

He strode through the doorway, sweeping his gaze over the empty desks, papers and pencils scattered all over the floor. He zeroed in on the slender woman seated at the teacher's desk. Her long wavy blond hair was pulled back from her face, and when she turned toward him, his gut wrenched with recognition.

"Tess?" He blinked, wondering if he'd made a mistake. But as he came closer, he knew he hadn't. Tess Collins had been a year behind him in high school, but they'd never really been friends. She was the class valedictorian, while he'd been the town troublemaker. They'd rarely spoken until the night he'd saved her from an assault mere weeks before he joined the service. He wasn't sure why she wasn't a doctor the way she'd planned, but there wasn't time to wander down memory lane.

"Don't move, okay? I'm going to take a look at this device and see what I can do to get you out of here."

"Declan," she whispered faintly. And despite the seriousness of the situation, he was secretly pleased that she'd remembered him, too. "I thought you joined the marines."

"I did, but now I'm back." He didn't want to scare her by pointing out how precarious her situation was, so he chose his words carefully as he gave an update through his radio. "Isaac, this looks to be a homemade device, although it appears the perp stuck a lot of extra wires into it, probably hoping to cause confusion."

"Roger, Deck. Is there a timer?"

"Affirmative. We have less than twenty minutes and counting." He knelt beside her and opened his pack. "I don't want you to worry, Tess. Just stay as still as possible."

"I'm trying," she said. "I've been telling my students for years to sit still, but I had no idea just how truly difficult a task that really was until right now."

After taking out his flashlight and peering at the device, he gave Isaac and Caleb more information. "This isn't the exact same makeup as the device from the custard stand, but I still think it's the same perp. I'm betting it has basic dynamite inside, along with tacks, just like the last one."

"Tacks?" Tess echoed in horror.

"Roger that, Deck," Caleb said. "Can you disarm it?"

"Affirmative." Declan wasn't about to say anything else that would scare Tess more than she already was. But the fact of the matter was that the placement of the bomb was ingenious. With it tucked up against the inside wall of the desk, and Tess's knee pressed against the trigger, his ability to work around the device was severely limited. Their perp was getting smarter and bolder at the same time. Not a good combination.

"I need someone to take the teacher's place," he said. "Any volunteers?"

"I'll do it," Caleb offered.

"No way," Isaac said. "You have a wife and daughter depending on you. I don't have anyone dependent on me so I'll do it."

"No," Tess spoke up. "I'm not switching places with anyone. That's a waste of time. Just figure out how to shut it down, okay?"

Declan glanced up at her. "Tess, I want you to be safe."

"I'm not trading places, end of discussion." Her brown eyes were haunted. "I trust God and I trust you, Declan. We'll get through this."

Her faith, even after all this time, was as strong as ever and only proved once again how far out of his league she was. "Negative, Isaac. She's refusing to leave. Sixteen minutes and counting."

"I trust you, Declan," Tess said again.

Humbled by her faith, he wanted more than anything not to let her down. "I'm going to move your chair as far over as possible so I can get closer to this thing, okay?" Deck stuck his flashlight in his mouth and turned over on his back, scooting under the desk. He held the wire cutters and then painstakingly followed the various wires.

Sweat beaded on his brow, rolling down the side of his face. Normally he was glacier cold when it came to disarming bombs. He didn't mind putting his life on the line to save others. In fact, he figured this weird talent he seemed to have was his calling.

But knowing that Tess would suffer—and probably die if he failed—elevated the tension to a whole new level.

He twisted several of the wires and found the bogus ones, holding his breath as he clipped them and tugged them from the clay inside the box. When he was down to four wires remaining, he wiped his brow with his forearm.

"Five minutes and counting," Isaac said in his ear.

He didn't want to think about what Tess was going through right now. She hadn't said a word as he worked, not even to ask how close he was to disarming the bomb.

"I've got four wires left. The rest were decoys," he informed Isaac. "They're all the same color, so I have no way of knowing which one is the ground, which one is attached to the timer and which one is the live wire leading to the fuse."

"You can do it, Deck," his teammate said. "Go with your gut."

Normally that was good advice. But not now. Not when Tess was the one who'd die alongside him if he failed.

He closed his eyes and cleared his mind, trying to imagine what the device looked like on the inside. With Tess's knee pressed up against the trigger, he hadn't been able to get the casing off to see for himself.

"Three minutes and counting," Isaac said.

"Dear Lord, please guide Declan," Tess whispered. "If it be Your will, give him the wisdom and strength to disarm this bomb. We ask for Your mercy and grace, Amen."

Tess's prayer caught him off guard, but then again, praying certainly couldn't hurt. He opened his eyes, and lifted the wire cutters.

"Two minutes, ten seconds and counting," Isaac told him.

Declan stared at the wires. He grabbed the one that was farthest away from the timer. If he were the one creating the bomb, he would thread it through to come out the opposite end as a confusion tactic. He clipped it with the wire cutters. The timer stopped and he breathed a sigh of relief.

"I've got it," he muttered. He clipped the next wire and relaxed when the bomb didn't blow. "Tess, I want you to slowly move your knee away from the box."

Excellent!
By Glenda Parker
This is the second book in the SWAT: Top Cop Series. I have loved this series and hope there are more than just three in the series. I do love Laura's work and this is an excellent example of her work. As always in her books, this book is well written, action packed, and you will love her characters. I enjoy how she weaves her faith throughout the whole story.

Tess Collins is giving a pop test when she sits at her desk and hears a click. Tess immediately sends her children out to the school yard and instructs one to get the principal. She explains that she has triggered a bomb, get all the children and teachers out of the school and asks her to call 911. SWAT shows up in the form of a man she had a crush on all through school, a one time bad boy.

Declan Shaw has returned to the town he had grown up in after six years in the Marines. He returned because his sister and her twin daughters needed help. Now a highly trained explosive expert on the Milwaukee County SWAT team he's sent to answer a possible bomb threat but finds his high school crush. He is the only one capable of disarming the bomb. A second bomb almost takes both their lives as he vows to protect her.

A journey of a second chance at love, of restoration, and trusting in God when things are out of your control. It's a great read and I look forward to reading the next book in the series. You may purchase the book at the address below.

Great Love Inspired Suspense
By Alexa Verde
Down to the Wire became one of my favorite books by Laura Scott, and considering how much I love all her books, that is saying something.

Characters of SWAT cop Declan Shaw and teacher Tess Collins are wonderful, but they have flaws, and that makes it so much easier to relate to them. Both Declan and Tess had to overcome their difficult childhoods, with Tess's father emotionally abusing her and Declan's father hitting him. When Declan and Tess were still in high school, Declan had rescued Tess from an assault. He's the one to come to her rescue again years later, and it will take everything he's got to keep Tess safe when it looks like someone ruthless is after her. Or is it Declan who is the real target?

Down to the Wire is a great read, and I enjoyed every page of this book.

Loved this series
By Kim
I actually ended up having to send to the UK to get this book, I could not find a copy anywhere in the USA. It was well worth the wait. This book contains three wonderful stories of a royal family who just wants to have some normal in their lives and how they go about finding it. The book if full of enemy conflict and how they deal with those threats. There is love, romance, and adventure. I really enjoyed this series and I am glad that I added it to my Nora collection.

Three Wonderful Stories! Well Worth the Wait!
By Sophie
"Cordina's Royal Family" is an omnibus of three stories written by Nora Roberts in the mid-1980's. I have searched for these three out of print tales for years, so imagine my delight when I discovered that they were to be re-printed in a special 3-in-1 collector's edition. Well, I am happy to report that it was worth the wait. Nora's three tales of royal romance and palace intrigue are, in a word, fantastic!
First is "Affaire Royale", which introduces the reader to Her Serene Highness Princess Gabriella de Cordina. Gabriella has just lived through a terrifying ordeal - being kidnapped. But Brie can't remember anything. Not who kidnapped her or how she escaped, not who her father and brothers are, not even her own name. Concerned about the safety of his only daughter, Prince Armand hires bodyguard Reeve MacGee to protect Brie.
Lost in a sea of concerned, unfamiliar faces, Brie finds a lifeline in Reeve. Reeve sets about helping Gabriella regain her memories, and as time passes he falls hard for the classy, determined, and remarkable Brie. Though he tries to remind himself that letting his emotions get involved will only cloud his senses while trying to protect Gabriella, Reeve well and truly loses his heart. But Reeve also knows that a guy like him has no future with a princess, and so he keeps what is in his heart to himself.
Though she is confused and scared and trying to find herself, Brie knows that the one thing that's real in her life is the love she feels for Reeve. Trying to accept that he doesn't love her the way she loves him isn't easy, though Gabriella was never one to give up when she wanted something. The passion that burns between Reeve and Brie will thrill and entice readers. But the threat to Brie is closer to home than anyone realizes, and though Reeve believes he has to let her go, he would never recover if the kidnappers' violent plans for Brie succeed!
Next is "Command Performance", which is even better than the delightful first story. His Royal Highness Prince Alexander is the heir to the Cordinian throne, and as a result he must always keep his emotions, and his temper, on a tight rein. Regal and enticing Eve Hamilton, the one woman Alex truly desires, has always seemed just out of his reach. Seemingly in love with his younger brother Bennett, when Eve comes to Cordina at his request, Alex knows a frustration unlike anything he has ever known. Eve, the manager of her own theatre troupe, is commissioned by Alex to put on four plays to benefit a children's charity. Though Alex is forever rubbing Eve the wrong way, she knows her troupe's first international performance is an opportunity too great to pass up.
But all is not perfect in Cordina. The man behind Princess Gabriella's kidnapping several years earlier, Deboque, is terrorizing Cordina with bombings. Next, Deboque begins using Eve to threaten the Royal Family. Alex is terrified for Eve's safety, but Eve is resolute that she will remain in Cordina and do her job.
As the misunderstandings that were keeping them apart are worked out, Eve and Alex are finally able to admit their true feelings for one another. Alex knows he will never love another woman the way he loves Eve, and their romance is full of sensuality and tenderness and is highly satisfying.
But both Alex and Eve are in grave danger. When Deboque issues a serious threat, it has everyone on edge. But what everyone doesn't realize is that Eve herself has become a target and the happiness she has finally found with Alex may well be snatched away from her!
Last, but certainly not least is "The Playboy Prince", which tells the story of dashingly handsome ladies man Prince Bennett. When reserved and conservative Hannah Rothchild arrives at the palace, Bennett can't figure her out. She couldn't be less his type, and yet something about her intrigues him. Hannah wears no make-up and her clothes are unflattering, and yet she is irresistible to Bennett. So for once in his life, Bennett finds himself compelled to look beyond what is on the outside of a woman in order to find out who she is on the inside.
In truth, Hannah is on a secret and dangerous mission and the attention Bennett keeps giving her is not good for the job she has come to do. But her treacherous heart skips a beat each time Bennett is near, and the woman behind the boring and unattractive facade longs to feel Bennett's arms around her. However, Hannah has never failed on a job before and she's not about to let Bennett keep her from doing this one. Still, Hannah can't keep herself from falling for the "Royal Rake" and Bennett too falls in love with the sweet and shy Hannah he knows.
So when Bennett discovers the real reason Hannah is in the palace, he feels completely betrayed and is hurt beyond words. Hannah feels her heart break at the contempt Bennett now feels for her, and she is consumed by guilt. But the game Hannah is playing is incredibly dangerous, and now Bennett knows that. Despite all that has happened, the thought of anything happening to Hannah turns Bennetts blood to ice. Roberts builds this last tale to a thrilling climax that will have readers on the edge of their seats, and a most satisfying conclusion.

Fletcher's Woman
By JJares
Carol Finch's banter between characters is often the high point in her stories. However, this story has the ingenuity of the female lead outsmarting the male lead, who is an accomplished Texas Ranger and tracker and ½ Apache.

This is book 2 of a series and Fletcher Hawk is on the trail of his ex-partner. However, he meets an ailing US Marshal who promptly gives him a badge and orders him to find a woman who is being accused of a murder she probably didn't commit. Reluctantly, Fletcher goes after Savanna Cantrell. After all, how hard can it be?

Savanna has been trained in survival skills and gives Fletch an extraordinary amount of trouble and grief. Keeping Savanna safe is a serious problem; the bounty on her is $20,000 and rising. When the second murder is laid at her door, the stakes increase.

A quick fun read
By Mary Ellen Barak
If you are looking for an in dept character study - this isn't it, this is a quick and fun escape. It is the second of the Hawk Brothers series. It isn't necessary to have read the first book, but the loose ends from the first are tied up here. Fletch is a Texas Ranger searching for an ex partner that tried to kill him. En route to chase down the latest lead on his whereabouts, Fletch gets roped into finding and protecting a women that may be a killer. Reluctantly Fletch agrees figuring it will be easy and he can be on his way. Savannah is nothing that he expected when she literally turns him upside down at their first meeting. What follows is a romps across Indian Territory that challenges both Fletch and Savannah and will test their trust and will to survive to the limit.

Georgia Jules
By Georgia Jules
I read this book first and realized that it was the second in a series. I enjoyed it so much that I immediately purchased the first book. Both were outstanding and a little different from some of the other books that I had read. They both kept my attention and were rather fast moving and exciting. The books connected the brothers with ease in both stories. This is a book that I am sure I will reread again. I highly recommend them both.

Beyond friendship
By C. M. Chen
Merry McBride is a beautiful and intelligent veterinarian who has always been able to count on friends and family until the day her friend and fiance, Thomas, runs out on her on their wedding day. Nick Kincaid is the steady and dependable town sheriff who has loved Merry since high school and has been best friends with her and Thomas since childhood.
Their amiable triangle breaks apart when Thomas humiliates Merry in front of the entire town and leaves Nick in the difficult position of having to comfort and reassure her. Thomas's betrayal splinters their friendship in so many ways that it seems irreparable. But repair it Turner does by the story's end. If their friendship has not been restored completely, it has made something of a start in that direction. But more importantly, the fracture makes it possible for Nick to illustrate that he truly is the best man for our heroine to marry and not to fulfill the role in her wedding to another man.
I think Nick Kincaid is a hero to be admired for his patience and his unconditional love. I think it is important to stress just how unconditional and unselfish that love is. Nick is a man of action, not in a flashy sense but in an understated one. He illustrates his love for Merry by simply being the friend he has always been to her. Merry is an admirable heroine in the sense that she is never truly confused about where she stands with her ex-fiance. Instead, the author does a great job of emphasizing her gradual awareness of Nick as their friendship develops into something deeper.

I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
By A Customer
What would you do if you were jilted on your wedding day? What would you do if the best man, your best friend, the guy you grew up with, suddenly looked "different'? What would you do if he suddenly told you that he'd loved you all his life and wants you to be his forever? And what would you do if out of the blue your runaway groom comes back to claim you once more?
Well, thank God it's not our problem, but Molly's in Linda Turner's, THE BEST MAN, who happens to be gorgeous, brown-eyed, be-there-for-you-always, town sheriff, Nick. If you're dying to find out who Molly choses, get this book! It's worth it. Trust me!

Love and Jealousy
By K. Morgan
The Bride Thief is a story of love and jealousy. It shows the power of true love and the evils of jealousy. Isabelle can't believe Justin would want her as his wife instead of the rich and beautiful Evelyn, but he does. She is kidnapped and taken to Talwar with him where everything is fine until Evelyn shows up. Her extreme jealousy of Isabelle and wanting of Justin wreak havoc on Talwar.
This book has some slow parts in it but I loved it anyway. Especially when Evelyn shows up at Talwar claiming to be a changed woman. The love between Justin and Isabelle was written well. Their love story was a make-you-feel-good story. The character of Evelyn was written well also. The things she did were outrageous. I think the author did an excellent job of bringing to life on the pages the jealousy and evilness of Evelyn.
This is a must-read for anyone who loves historical fiction, a love story, or a villianess.

The Bride Thief will Steal Your Heart
By M. Rondeau
This follows the story of another Baldwin brother from the Bride's Portion" and "The Heiress Bride" only this is Justin's story. He was always sombre and so very serious growing up it was a delight to see him become so assertive and steal away Isabelle Gaillard after he had fell under her spell when courting her cousin Evelyn.
Justin was not stupid and only courted Evelyn whom he had seen was manipulative because it was the only way he could keep seeing Isabelle. He stole her away and brought her to his small holding Talwar.
Isabelle, had fallen in love with Justin the moment she had laid her eyes on him. He was different than most of the men courting her beautiful cousin but she had never hoped that he would even notice her. Her life was something akin to a Cinderella - the poor relation kept only to serve her relations.
The story was superb, as I've found all of Ms. Pauls bride books to be. Each book stands on its own, and this one does splendidly. Both Isabelle and Justin had only to believe in their good fortune in believing in each other. This book had all the elements one comes to expect from Ms. Paul - couldn't put it down. Find it at all costs and enjoy the superb work of this author.
