THE HIGHWAYMAN CAME RIDING
Miss Jane Lockwood, spinster, Lady of Quality, and model of propriety, had a secret bent for adventure. Perhaps that was why when her inebriated coachman shot a man suspected of terrorizing the neighbourhood, she decided to nurse the victim in her own home - despite the 'delicate' nature of his wound. And maybe that was why she decided to detain him there, in hopes of reforming him, of course.
But Jon 'Sebast' was not quite what he seemed. The truth was far worse than Jane had ever imagined! Had she known she was harbouring one of London's most notorious rakes in her home, she might just have turned and run for her life!

A fair read

I liked the story line of this book, it was interesting and romantic, although it had a potential to deserve higher than the three-star rating. What didn't quite work for me was the writing skill--it was too simply written and characters were not very well drawn out; I felt Ms. Reynolds have introduced too many ideas and characters to allow them fully explained and developed in this 216 pages book; The result was that I did not find it an engrossed read, just a fair read.

The Highwayman by Catherine Reynolds
Harlequin Regency # 109 - November 1993
This was a charming read. It's been awhile since I've read a Regency, and it was a lovely diversion for the afternoon. This most disreputable Rake gently rubs off on the very Prim Miss Jane; and the Rake finds himself wanting to be respectable. There are a few laugh-out-loud moments and some rather serious ones as well. All in all, a very fun and light read.
