Another Excellent Neels Story (5+ stars)
By Amazon Customer
Book Description: Olympia's overbearing aunt used her as her personal servant, until attractive Dutchman Waldo van der Graaf quite literally rescued her. He suggested that she exchange her life of drudgery for the role of his wife. Waldo needed someone to look after his small daughter and run his home--a marriage of convenience. Olympia was thankful and accepted his proposal, but soon realized she had only exchanged one set of problems for another when she found herself falling in love with her own husband!

Another excellent story Neels fans are sure to enjoy involving a Rich Handsome Dutch Doctor and a British Nurse described as having a pleasant face with "no startling good looks" while being kind and hard working. Olympia's aunt is basically the evil stepmother, Waldo's his female "friend" substitutes for the evil stepsister, while small "daughter" adds "something" extra to story. Neels incorporated a little touch of mystery with her Cinderella tale of misunderstandings, false assumptions, and dishonesty.

Good heroine characterization, interesting plot.
By Patricia
Olympia Randle, 27, is in wretched circumstances, even by Neels standards. An orphan, she was raised by her tightfisted aunt who paid for her nursing education only after Olympia agreed to return and work at her aunt's nursing home. Working for a small allowance, she has no prospects for marriage and she is very much aware of how bleak her future is. She is, however, a kind girl who cares for the old dears who are stuck in Aunt Maria's nursing home and tries to make the best of things, all the while longing to leave. One day, when disobeying her aunt by going to an art exhibit while out buying cheap sheets for the home, she slips on the steps, falling down a the feet of our hero, widower Dr. Waldo van der Graaf. Waldo helps her up, walks around the museum with her, takes her to tea, and then returns her to the home.

Several dates later, he proposes a marriage of convenience: he needs a wife to take care of his 5 year-old daughter Ria, run his house, and be his hostess. Olympia jumps at the chance. Her circumstances improve, but she finds she is now faced with different problems: Ria hates her and Waldo pretty much ignores her. In addition, Elisabeth, the lovely sister of Waldo's late wife, is used to coming in and out of the house whenever she wishes, calling on Waldo for help with her financial decisions, and taking part in family activities. To top it all off, Olympia soon falls in love with Waldo. Olympia finds that beautiful clothes, elegant surroundings, and being in love does not bring happiness. Uncomfortable in her new position as mother and wife, she feels quite alone.

Waldo, who drives a Lamborghini Urraco (called a 'Euraco' in the book) and a Daimler Double Six, and by the end of the book has added a Rolls Royce Corniche convertible, starts off well enough- he's kind, calm, and a true gentleman. Once married though, he gives little thought to Olympia, other than to set up her allowance, see to Dutch lessons, and introduce her to a few married friends. The second day in Holland, he turns his daughter over to her, and returns to his usual work schedule. For most of the book, he is rather bland.

Olympia is much more interesting, and I liked how she slowly gained more confidence in herself. She is still uncomfortable in her new role, but she begins to stand up for herself and unfortunately it is to Waldo. There's a misunderstanding, of course, but it is more cleverly, and believably, done than usual and allows for good angst. The ending is not abrupt and is satisfying.

The story is told from Olympia's point of view only. This is mainly about Olympia and how she grows, comes stand on her own feet, and finds love. There's little in the way of cozy moments, but when the end comes you will smile and be happy for the three of them.
