Beloved

I loved all of the Hart Brothers stories except the one with Rey Hart. This one was the second in the series and I loved it. You can feel how much the heroine loves the hero. Ms. Palmer does a great job in describing the reasons behind Simon's hesitation with wanting to love again. The story leads up to a wonderful ending. She gives you a preview of Simon's other brothers. Love them all even though I didn't really care for the last one. The brothers are sooo funny and endearing. They all have their own issues with women and loving but in the end, they just can't stay away from them. The heroines are matched perfectly with each Hart brother. I just can't get enough of Diana Palmer.

Sooo poorly written.....

I'd read the author's "Blind Promises" and "Wyoming Fierce" and they were...okay. Very formulaic but okay for simple bedtime reading. Definitely not good enough to make me understand why Diana Palmer's so popular, but not bad. I figured since I'd read these two Palmer books, this one should be okay, too.
No. This book is...bad. I started reading romance novels 1 1/2 years ago, have read 130+ in that time, of widely divergent quality, and this was perhaps the worst. I should've read the preview. I knew I was in trouble when I had to re-read parts of the Prologue to see if the author had really meant what she'd written, and when the beginning of Chapter 1 basically repeated that none too perfect Prologue...and threw in more contradictions, implausibilities, and the first of many instances of unrealistic character behaviour. It was then a growing struggle to keep reading the constant repetitions (and constantly repeated contradictions), and illogical story on the faint hope something in the plot would make up for the truly poor writing. No such luck. Simon's best friend, John, was divorced by Tira then she "let" John go work on a North Sea oil rig (huh? see: divorced!) where John dies in an accident...and thus Simon decides she...murdered John?! And Simon has such contempt now for this shallow, wouldn't-work-on-her-marriage "murderess" that he...spends the next seven years in a platonic "friendship" with her and gets jealous of her perceived long-time lover, Charles?! Meanwhile the supposedly intelligent, sophisticated Tira seems to suffer from a major hormone imbalance as Simon's slightest touch shuts down her brain and self-respect and renders her incapable of saying No to a man who vacillates between insult, apology, and lust (which apparently is the proof of his love). Oh, and a man whose body-image is so fragile (or who's so vain?) that, despite Tira having "nursed" him at the hospital after he lost 1/2 his arm in the accident that killed his wife (except Tira's not a nurse, and as a non-relative woman shouldn't be hovering while he's mourning his wife!), and despite Tira having thus seen his arm stump at its worst, and despite 8 years having past, won't be seen without a cosmetic, non-functioning prosthetic (he's super-rich...why doesn't he have a myoelectric arm or at least a hook?!)...and won't even take his shirt off the first time he and Tira sexually assault each other (excuse me...make love)! So little is realistic about how these characters finally reach their HEA, and so poor is the writing (I've read much better composed fan fiction) that it would be laughable if it wasn't so cringe-worthy.
And now I reeeeally don't understand Diana Palmer's popularity, or why this book was even published. Perhaps it's because she IS so popular that her publisher doesn't even bother any more with editing her submissions or holding them to a reasonable standard of literary quality and story/character believability. At least her grammar is okay...no incorrect homonyms, mis-used words, or typos.
