Historical Romance -March 17th, 2016
4 stars
This Regency romance features a noble hero and a beautiful if slightly flighty heroine.
Amelie Glenville is young and passionate. She is in love with her fiancee, but it appears he may not be so in love with her! When she is abandoned on the streets of Brussels of the eve of battle she is lucky to be found by the dashing lieutenant, Edmund Summerfield. Edmund has always had a crush on Amelie and is determined to take her back to her home where she will be safer. However, Amelie is distraught from her encounter with her ex-fiancee and propositions him. As a result they share a night of passion.
Unfortunately, that night had unforeseen consequences. When Edmund returns months later and discovers Amelie pregnant! Since Edmund was illegitimate he does not want any child of his to face the same prejudices and ask Amelie to marry him. She reluctantly agrees. They marry with her parents disapproval but settle in a farming area where Amelie feels she can make a difference and discover a solid family life with Edmund. However, accusations of embezzlement from the estate occur and Amelie's father comes demanding justice. Their quite life is disrupted and their blooming love is tested.
This was a sweet romance about two young characters. Edmund has seen a harsher life being born a bastard and works to shield Amelie. Amelie sometimes appears to live in a fantasy world and her actions have solidly pushed her to face the consequences or her actions. However, she is very lucky to have landed in the caring and noble Edmund's hands! He loves her but does not want to pressure her. In this book Edmund takes much of the responsibility but that slowly changes as Amelie grows. This romance is is not torrid romance, despite its scandalous start. Rather it is romance that slowly unfolds as the young lovers learn to understand each other and appreciate a life they each had not expected. While Edmund and Amelie do have a rather passionate bed life during the day they not quite as forward. This leads to misunderstandings that are well resolved at the end. This book also features a charming romance with Amelie's maid that I enjoyed.
Bound by One Scandalous Night is a charming and heartwarming Regency.

Intriguing circumstances and emotionally compelling
By A. Richard
The Scandalous Summerfields miniseries is about a group of siblings who are trying to overcome the humiliating behavior of their parents, but before they can find lasting love, they have to prevail over shameful events in their own lives. The half-brother of three sisters constantly lives with the humiliation of being illegitimate, and now a new incident will just add more gossip about him. Whether Edmund Summerfield can prove that he is a worthy hero will depend on how he responds when he finds himself in the same position as his father once did. Diane Gaston makes BOUND BY ONE SCANDALOUS NIGHT emotionally compelling.
Belgium is being invaded by Napoleon and his army, so Lt. Edmund Summerfield knows he will soon be fighting this hated enemy. But as he is preparing to report for duty, he sees a woman being dragged away by a man with wicked intentions. After chasing away the attacker, he discovers the individual he saved from being harmed is Amelie Glenville, someone whom he already knows. Though Edmund is fascinated with her, he realizes her social status is too far above his own to even think about courting her. Yet the event has upset her, and he stays around to talk which leads to them spending several hours together before he must return to his regiment.
When Edmund and Amelie meet up three months later at a family gathering, he vividly recalls the night they were intimate. But when she confides to him that she is carrying his child, he is stunned but does not hesitate to do what is right. Edmund has always been called a bastard, and there is no way his son or daughter will suffer as he has over the years. While a quick wedding may solve future problems, it does raise all kinds of current questions that could still cause disgrace.
While many people living in England during the early 1800’s would have always seen someone like Edmund as inferior to them, he proves the nature of a man is much more important than social standing. He faced one hardship after another when he only tries to be honorable, and I had a great deal of sympathy for him anytime some new difficulty arose. What I truly respected about Edmund is how he tried to rise above what others thought of him, and he often seemed a better man than those in a higher class. His relationship with Amelie is very bumpy from the start, and so much interference from others just adds to their troubles. There were numerous times when she could have spoken what was in her thoughts but missed the opportunity, and I feared how this would affect things between them. Many emotional issues must be worked out before the marriage of Edmund and Amelie can turn genuine.
Different historical locations come alive in the story, and a country setting is especially enjoyable as various activities are observed. Lots of secondary characters are very likable, while a few are individuals with despicable behavior and are easy to despise. BOUND BY ONE SCANDALOUS NIGHT entertains with intriguing circumstances and a wide range of sentiments. Diane Gaston creates a number of emotional situations for her romantic couple in the second Scandalous Summerfields novel, where feelings are conflicted and doubts are hard to erase.

Good Reading
By LAS Reviewer
Temptation. The results of giving into temptation can be disastrous, especially in Regency England.
Edmund Summerfield rescues a young lady from the hands of a ruffian on the streets of Brussels only to find she is his sister Tess’ sister-in-law. Amelie Glenville has been abandoned by her fiancé when she offers to comfort him before he goes off to fight Napoleon. Edmund escorts her back to the hotel where both of them willingly submit to the temptation of each other’s bodies.
They both assume the one night of passion was the one and only time they would be together, but fate has other plans for them. They must fight through the troubles of angry families, a move to the country and the doubts and insecurities they have for each other.
This Regency novel is quite refreshing. Amelie has quite modern ideas, although she tries to follow the restrictions of the period. Edmund hides his love, aware Amelie cannot possibly marry a man like him, born out of wedlock.
The story skillfully brings visions of the past into the present, side stories supporting the main plot, but still strong stories in themselves. A well turned book with strong characters and supporting characters who behave in censorious way I assume aristocracy would have in the Regency era. A very entertaining novel.
