We start off with a death, and this is only proper as this is a murder mystery, so when this happens we should not be surprised. However, the death is that of Professor Hazel Wilmot, who is investigating reports of a ghost of a crying girl in a white dress and veil in the now abandoned Shadsborough Inn. Wilmot is fearless and confident in her ability to handle any situation. There is no doubt of the first although Wilmot will be sadly, and permanently, dissuaded of the later.
However, her death will serve a purpose, it will bring into the story Amanda Vickers, who is an editor and writer of the regional magazine "Roaming New England", and who was once Wilmot's student. Just before her death, Wilmot had called Amanda and had asked her to investigate the, now abandoned, inn in the small town of Shadsborough.
Now with Wilmot's death, it is up to Amanda to investigate both the house and Wilmot's death, and she's entering into this investigation with her protégé, the newly hired Marcie Ducassie. And what a pair they make, Amanda believes in nothing until it's proven, and Marcie is naïve and believes in it all. That there is an investigation at all is because Amanda feels guilty at not being there to help her ex-professor, especially since she is still working through some guilt issues. Amanda once was an overachiever as a reporter at the "The Boston Globe", and she had then let her work get between her, and her father one night, and while waiting for her to arrive for a dinner date, he had fallen asleep while smoking and had set his house on fire and had burned to death. So she feels responsible for Hazel Wilmot's death as she wasn't there when Hazel needed her.
Meanwhile, as Amanda and Marcie investigate the ghost of Shadsborough Inn, Hazel's son, Arthur, who has spent his life trying to please an unpleasable woman, shows up to do his own investigation. It also turns out that Amanda and Marcie are making enemies, like John Phelps, who owns the Shadsborough Inn and blames Hazel for his inability to reopen the inn, or Chief Hudson, who is angry, and resents anybody asking any questions in his town.
Unfortunately, Arthur is not much use to anybody, when he is threatened he turns out to be wimp, then Marcie is assaulted, and things start getting rougher, as it becomes obvious that all of this is also related to the disappearance of the popular high school student Anne Martin, who had gone missing on the way home from school one day.
Amanda and Marcie's investigation, like "The Crying Girl", will continue on its predictable way until its blazing conclusion. Yet despite its predictability, I found this to be a good story well told that had likable characters, a solid, if predictable storyline, and some supernatural elements in that Amanda's dead father appears to her at a moment of crisis and seems to help save her life. "The Crying Child" is a solid and likable read that would certainly make a good Lifetime or Hallmark made-for-television movie
But in-the-end, for cozy mystery buffs, this is also a novel that turns out to be good family fare as there is no graphic sex, or sex of any kind, or much in the way of swearing.
I should point out that I never try to guess the endings of the mysteries that I read, so I wasn't really trying to guess whodunit, so I wasn't disappointed by this novel's ending. This was a novel that I needed to read at the time that I read it, and it certainly did its job.

a not scary one!

Was an interesting entertaining read – the characters were believable. The plot well planned with good writing – I enjoyed it, only rated it a 4 star because the story wasn’t very believable!
